Why is Drew Bennett so underappreciated (1 Viewer)

Last year is last year. Norm Chow brings a whole other element to the passing game and if teams focus on any one player they will get burned. Maybe Bennett doesn't equal last season, but he should be pretty darn close.
That's great, let's just pull out that arguement whenever we disagree with someone. You think Javon Walker is a top 10 WR? Sure, he was good last year, but last year was last year.

You think Bruce isn't going to show his age? Sure, he didn't last year, but last year was last year.

Of course last year is last year. I don't know what you think I'm mistaking last year for. That said, I know what I saw. I saw Denver put Champ Bailey on Bennett 1-on-1, and I saw Bennett disappear. That's not "focusing on any one player", that's simply putting a #1 CB on him and watching him disappear. Will Bennett be better this season? Possible. Was that a fluke game? Possibly. Still, Bennett has never shown me that he can beat #1 coverages.

And this whole "Norm Chow brings a whole other element" stuff is bull. What, do you think Norm Chow is the only guy in the entire NFL who knows how to scheme? Do you think every other offensive coordinator is too stupid to realize that teams are focusing more on one player than another? Do they scratch their head on the sideline and say "Gee, Randy Moss is double covered, how are they managing to do that?"

Like I said, I'm a Bennett owner. I'm expecting a top 20 season from him. I'm just extremely nervous about it. I think there's a very big risk of him becoming invisible this season. I don't think Norm Chow brings anything special to the table. If anything, I consider him one of the worst offensive coordinators in the NFL because he hasn't shown a single thing in the pros. It's one thing to ring up 50 points when you've got as big of a talent disparity as he did at USC. Let's see him do it now that he's on the other end of the talent disparity in Tennessee.

You can read my earlier posts about Bennett and I agree there are concerns about him never being a #1 before. However, I have a lot of faith in Chow. You may think that what he does isn't much different that what other OC's do, but I disagree. He never had an overwhelming amount of talent at BYU or NC State, but he made both into great passing teams. Then he transformed Palmer from a disappointing QB into the Heisman trophy winner and #1 NFL pick. USC was not the powerhouse that they are now - remember they lost the 2001 Las Vegas Bowl to Utah before getting Chow.

I drafted Bennett as my WR2 and would be very happy with 1000 yards and 7-9 TD's. IMO, this is very attainable. If you look at his ADP and projections, he has more upside than down.I am very optimistic about his chances with a healthy McNair and I do think that the Chow offense will be a big factor also. Players and discussions like this make this game great. Hopefully tomorrow will answer some of these questions....

Still, be that as it may, this is the NFL. The best minds in football all congregate here, and the talent is always very even. I doubt there's anything that a Norm Chow can do that a Mike Shanahan, or Gary Kubiak, or Scott Linehan, or Tom Moore, or **** Vermiel isn't already doing. I don't think Chow will be able to punish the opposition for concentrating on Bennet any more than any of those other guys do for focusing on THEIR #1 WR, and I'm still not convinced that Bennett will take much "focusing" on to negate. That said, again, I think he's a top 20 WR this season with a lot of upside. I just made sure to grab a very solid and dependable backup (Isaac Bruce, Rod Smith, Jimmy Smith, Eddie Kennison, Keyshawn Johnson type) in case I'm wrong.

Bennett only excels when Volek is tossing the ball. Three years in a row now, when he has had to start for McNair .... Bennett is spectacular. I would like to see Volex as the QB all season long.
