Why is nobody talking about Dwyer? (1 Viewer)

I picked Dwyer up yesterday after waivers cleared and he was still a FA and I would have to bench either McCoy, McGahee, or Stewart to start him. Stewart would be the most likely player here, but I'm not really sure just yet. Any chance this guy keeps the job? Mendenhall might be gimpy the rest of the year and Redman may end up being the 3rd down back.

Totally a chance especially if they win this one and Dwyer plays a pivotal role.Things change quickly in the NFL if Dwyer is working they will stick with it.

According to this Dwyer is getting the start again. Pittsburgh playing at home could be a good time to put him in your lineup.

The Beaver County Times fully expects Jonathan Dwyer to draw a second consecutive start versus the Redskins in Week 8.Dwyer returned to a full practicing after taking Wednesday off for personal reasons. Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles) is expected to sit out another week, and Isaac Redman's (ankle) status is up in the air after a limited practice on Thursday. If Redman progresses enough to suit up, it will likely be as the passing-down complement to Dwyer between the tackles. Dwyer impressed with 114 (of 122) yards after contact in Week 7. Rotoworld ranks him 24th among fantasy backs for Week 8.

Nice, Beaver.

I don't see how you can start Dwyer over Redman but bench him in favor of Redman if Mendy is healthy.
Redman = 3rd down backDwyer= not a 3rd down back
That's just a restatement of the condition, not an explanation.First, what does Redman do so well on 3rd down? Second, why not let Mendy have the 3rd down work and use Dwyer to spell him in the early downs if Dwyer is a liability blocking.
Redman is the best receiving threat on the roster, so it'd make sense that he'd be the go-to on obvious passing downs (such as 3rd and long).
I dont think Redman is the best receiving threat by any means. He is actually probably the worst when you consider Rainey as well. He had a big game vs TEN receiving, a game that Dwyer didnt play in. That game is literally almost equivalent of Redman's use/targets in the passing game in his career.

According to rotoworld (sorry no link), mendenhall OUT for week 8, redman partially practiced Thursday.

From Rotoworld:

CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora confirms Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles) will not play Sunday versus the Redskins.

The good news is that Mendenhall is on schedule to return in Week 9. Isaac Redman (ankle) is practicing again on Friday, but Steelers beat writers unanimously expect Jonathan Dwyer to be the featured back in Week 8. Mendenhall is expected to regain the starting role at the Giants next week.

I hate this matchup for Dwyer. If the matchup was better, I'd start him, but I think I'll flex him out for a 4th WR.

He has almost no chance of getting 100 yards, and does he get any GL carries?

I hope I'm wrong. Mendy is sure to be back after this week, isn't he? So, it's the last chance to start Dwyer if you have him, right?

News: Pittsburgh running back Isaac Redman was listed as questionable on the team's injury report for Week 8 against Washington as he attempts to work past a lingering ankle issue. Redman was a limited participant in Friday's practice, the second straight day he has been active after sitting Wednesday. "I really want to play. I hate sitting on the sidelines," said Redman, who missed Week 7 with the injury. "We'll see what (coach Mike Tomlin's) decision is come Sunday." Redman has totaled 127 rushing yards and a touchdown on 50 carries this season for a meager average of 2.5 yards per attempt.

Analysis: Redman said he will likely be hampered by the ankle issue for the remainder of the season, but is hoping to remain in the mix for carries out of the backfield. "I don't think I'll ever be 100 percent, but I feel like I'm ready to go," he said. "I feel like I can play. I'm ready." If active, Redman could be in line for additional carries as running back Rashard Mendenhall was already ruled out for Sunday's game, but the team could also rely on Jonathan Dwyer after his stellar performance last week. The Redskins are permitting an average of 14.1 Fantasy points per game to opposing running backs, and were chewed up for two touchdowns in Week 7 against the Giants. Consider Redman a possible flex option in deeper Fantasy formats for Week 8 as long as he's healthy.

Someone offered me Dwyer/Kolb for McGahee. I couldn't click the reject button fast enough, but now I'm wondering if I made a mistake. This is a keeper league, and now I'm thinking that there could be some long-term value with Dwyer if the Steelers eventually move on from Mendenhall. My team is 2-5 and going nowhere fast. McGahee is a definite keeper for me, but he is on the wrong side of 30, plus maybe Hillman eats more into his touches next year. Not sure if Kolb can keep up his level of play when he comes back, but this is a 20-team league with a Q/W/R/T flex, so I could really use that 2nd QB (Eli's basically the only QB on my roster).

i would of rejected that as well... still too many question marks floating around here. Kolb is about as useless as they come so its basicaly a lottery ticket for proven production now.... and i own Dwyer in a dynasty league as a stash.

Yeah, I wasn't seeing any greatness from Redman in that category either. Hence my head scratching. His receiving talents seem rather replaceable.

Same exact boat as you with Rice out. I am going to leave him on the bench in lieu of a 4th WR like Britt, Bowe or Gordon.

I don't think it's a guarantee Mendenhall will be back next week. He's the type of guy who will hold a questionable tag all year.

McGahee is a top 12 RB easy in PPR from here on out, likely top 10 as long as he stays healthy (ranked 12th currently in 1PPR, 15th in standard, on pace for 1500+ total yards and 48 receptions, easiest ROS of all RBs aside from DMC).Even if Dwyer was guaranteed the lion's share of carries for the rest of the season, I still wouldn't trade McGahee for him.As for the match up vs. WAS..WAS is allowing the 10th fewest fantasy points per game.Teams have averaged 3.9 YPC against them per game.Teams have averaged the 2nd fewest rushing attempts (22) against them per game (biggest kicker here since Dwyer is a volume runner)Over the past three weeks however, they've been a neutral match up (both Turner and Bradshaw scored, Peterson totaled 129 yards)I noticed last week that when Big Ben was under a lot of pressure, he had Dwyer wide open in the flat or in between the hashes and he would seemingly ignore him and take a sack. There were plenty of times where the check down to Dywer was the rational decision but it just never happened. I do not expect him to be ignored in the passing game again this week. Assuming he gets the touches, a 16-18/60-80/.5 and 2-3/10-20/0 is a reasonable assumption.

Dwyer just latest breakout back for Steelers

By WILL GRAVES (AP Sports Writer) | The Associated Press 16 hours ago...

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Jonathan Dwyer walked into the Pittsburgh Steelers locker room a few hours before taking on the Eagles earlier this month, saw his name in black on the white message board and shrugged his shoulders.

The third-year running back expected there to be fallout over his costly fourth-quarter fumble a few days earlier in a loss to Oakland. While Dwyer hoped he'd get a chance to immediately atone for the first mistake of his career, the writing on the wall - literally - meant he was inactive.

Harsh? Maybe a little. Undeserved? Not really, at least not to Dwyer.

''I was inactive because of me,'' Dwyer said.

And the somewhat impersonal manner in which it was handed didn't bother him either.

''That's how we do business here,'' he said. ''It's very honest and straightforward and it makes me want to work harder to eliminate my problems and eliminate mistakes from my game.''

So Dwyer didn't spend two weeks beating himself up while watching from the sideline in sweats as Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman went to work. He's well-versed in the Steeler mantra of ''next man up'' and when injuries to both Mendenhall and Redman thrust Dwyer back onto the field last weekend against Cincinnati, he buckled his chinstrap, kept his head down and plowed ahead.

The result was a career-high 122 bruising yards in a 24-17 victory. On most teams, posting the highest rushing total in over a year would assure you of more than a handful of carries the next week.

Not in Pittsburgh, which has found a way of coaxing steady performances from whomever lines up behind quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

A half-dozen backs have topped 100 yards in a game at least once since Jerome Bettis retired after the 2005 season. From Willie Parker to Najeh Davenport to Mewelde Moore to the current trio of Mendenhall, Redman and Dwyer, Pittsburgh has a way of getting what it needs out of the running game from whatever name happens to be at the top of the depth chart, regardless of pedigree.

Though Mendenhall has been the entrenched starter since being taken in the first round of the 2008 Draft, when he's been hurt - which has been often - the dropoff has been minimal.

Last year it was Redman - who signed as a rookie free agent in 2009 - gashing the Denver Broncos for 121 yards in a Wild Card loss. Last week it was Dwyer - a sixth-round pick the 2010 NFL Draft - repeatedly churning into the Cincinnati secondary.

''There are a lot of talented guys in that room,'' tight end Heath Miller said. ''Generally one guy is carrying the ball so you don't get to see what's behind the starter a lot of times but (the backups) are not duds by any means, they've got a lot of talent and they probably deserve more carries than they get a lot of times.''

It's why Dwyer isn't getting caught up in worrying about his status, though it's likely he'll start on Sunday against the Redskins. Dwyer understands whenever Mendenhall returns from a strained right Achilles, he'll almost certainly head right back to the bench. The same threat looms if Redman's bothersome ankles recover.

If Mendenhall and Redman get healthy at some point this season, there's even a chance Dwyer could return to the inactive list.

Dwyer is OK if that happens, confident that he's heading in the right direction. It's been a long slog over the last three years for the former Georgia Tech star who surprised some by coming out after his junior season.

He arrived at his first training camp out-of-shape and even now, his 5-foot-11, 229-pound frame is hardly imposing compared to the chiseled Mendenhall or the brawny Redman.

Unlike most of his teammates, Dwyer rarely takes his shirt off in the locker room and there's a small but noticeable bump over his midsection when he's in uniform.

Not that it matters when the ball is in his hands. Dwyer runs with a quiet controlled fury. Get the ball. Pick a hole and sprint.

''My game is just going straightforward and making things happen and being physical,'' Dwyer said. ''That's who I've been ever since I was a kid. That's not going to change.''

Good, because the Steelers don't want him to. In a way he's a smaller version of Bettis only without the ''Bus'' nickname or the Super Bowl ring, though former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward has an idea on what to call Dwyer if he can make his performance against the Bengals a habit.

''He's the minivan,'' Ward said. ''He doesn't look perfect all the time. It's just a beige light van, no rims on the car, no tint on the windows. But he's one of the guys if you continue to give the rock too, gets you from Point A to Point B.''

It's all the Steelers ask from any of their running backs. For all their collective gifts, Dwyer, Mendenhall and Redman merely serve as supporting actors in an offense that revolves around Roethlisberger.

Still, even Roethlisberger relishes the chance to finish off an opponent by taking a snap, turning around and handing it to a back until the defense breaks.

The quarterback got a pretty good view of Dwyer's handiwork against the Bengals. When Pittsburgh took over nursing a seven-point lead with 3:57 left, he hit Mike Wallace for a first down then gave it to Dwyer on four straight plays for runs of 14, 0, 3 and 32 yards.

On the final snap, Roethlisberger took the ball and kneeled down in victory formation then slapped Dwyer on the helmet.

''He ran guys over and got the tough yards,'' Roethlisberger said. ''He found the speed to get down the field and into the secondary. He puts safeties in tough situations.''

The same can't be said for Pittsburgh's coaching staff.

Tomlin is pleased with Dwyer's progress but makes no promises about the future. That's fine by Dwyer, who tries to heed running backs coach Kirby Wilson's advice to focus on the brotherhood of the position and not who's getting the ball.

''Kirby has always taught that's it's not about competing against each other, it's about helping each other,'' Dwyer said. ''We all want to be the best.''

just heard on ESPN that Mendy and Redman are both inactives today. Dwyer to carry the load again. I think you gotta get him in your lineups at this point.

With bye weeks and injuries, he's in for me. Best case scenario I can see is the steelers really emphasize the run today to try to limit RG III touching the ball. That's crazy respect toa rookie qb but the guy makes things happen some will see.

The weather in CLE convinced me to go Dwyer over Floyd. I don't expect much rushing yardage, banking on a GL score to get him into double digit FF points.

Dwyer over 100 again, does he remain the starter?
Unfortunately, probably not...he's the first Steel RB to get back-to-back 100 yd rushing games since 2008, but from the coachspeak they just aren't very impressed by him and he's still buried at #3/4 on the roster. Even today, while running for 107 yards with 6.3ypc he was still left out of whole series where they plugged in Rainey and Batch instead. Pretty frustrating as an owner, as there are a lot of other teams that would kill for that type of production and keep feeding him the ball with those results.

Yeah, you just get this feeling as if they don't even remotely trust him even though he's been breaking of 10+ yard runs with ease. I bet you he has the most 10+ yard runs in the last two weeks.

Watched the game. He looked good today. Like a real NFL starter.

I think it will be RBBC when Mendenhall gets back, but maybe they'll let him walk in the offseason.

Imagine how good he'd be if he could convert even half of that spare tire he has around his waist into muscle?

The good news on all this is he looks like a mini Bettis out there and is capitolizing on his opportunity all the while his contract is up this yr... im pretty sure if pittsburg doesnt invest in him Atlanta will be on speed dial for him as a future replacement for Turner.... a lot of teams would love a RB like Dwyer imo. He looks more impressive then I thought.

I know his size will always be a lightning rod for criticism, but Dwyer has been extremely impressive the past two weeks. Not sure what the issues are on the goal line, but he has displayed good footwork and the ability to move the chains when given the opportunity. I think his talent will eventually win out whether its now, later this year, or next year. If you have him, hold and see how this plays out. Mendy and Redman arent known as ironmen either.

I've seen 3 or 4 mentions on Twitter of Dwyer sustaining some sort of late game injury (quad?), but have seen nothing mentioned on the usual fantasy sites. I didn't watch the game, but I assume this is why Batch closed the game out. Anything to this?

#Steelers LT Max Starks on Jonathan Dwyer vs Rashard Mendenhall:

"More of the man-zone stuff has been really good thus far - keeping it between the tight ends on the line; not trying to cut outside every single time. Obviously you try to change it up here and there. But normal zone schemes have been working best for us."

"The way that Dwyer runs and the way that we block, I think it's the best thing for this offense right now. Obviously, when Rashard is healthy, it's a different dimension. You open up the playbook a bit more because of his versatility as a back. But when you look at Dwyer, when you look at a healthy Redman, those guys, are more-so single cut-back runners and play well between the tackles." 5 minutes ago

i just got Dwyer with a $1 bid off waivers this past week in my dynasty league...nothing would make me happier than to see him take over as the starter...but i think tomlin will stick with mendy when healthy and have dwyer come in as COP. next year might be a different story...

Jonathan Dwyer shrugged off a strained right quad that coach Mike Tomlin pointed out in the post-game injury report.

"I'm fine," said Dwyer. Coach Mike Tomlin was noncommittal when asked if Dwyer has earned the starting job over Rashard Mendenhall going forward. Dwyer has back-to-back 100-yard games in two starts, a feat Mendenhall hasn't pulled off in five years with the Steelers. In fact, Dwyer now has three 100-yard games on just 83 career carries. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review believes Dwyer has earned the early-down role, as the offense has fed off his physicality and yards after contact. With Mendenhall reaching free agency after the season, it makes sense to roll with Dwyer at 5.16 yards per carry.

Dwyer looks like the starter at this point. It wouldn't make any sense for Tomlin to go away from him given how well the offense is clicking with him and how many extra yards he is picking up after contact. Especially given the injury concerns with Mendenhall.

If Dwyer is named the starter, where do we rank him moving forward. Top 15?

Why isn't there a spit-take emote? Dwyer has been RB 13 last week and 14 (so far) this week... thats without Redman and Mendy to split carries with, and with teams on byes. So no, nobody in that backfield is likely to be top 15.
