Why not an awards show? (1 Viewer)

With the expectations of the Pro Bowl once again to be a disgrace why not have an awards show on Sunday night to kickoff the Super Bowl festivities for the week? Everyone loves the Heisman presentation and the MVP has never been given a truely great ceremony. Seems like it would be kind of the perfect mesh of what the NFL wants in the lull of the bye week before the game.

I think an awards show is a fantastic idea.  They could take each award, name several finalists in advance, and show a video montage of each finalist's highlight reel from that season prior to naming the winner. If the NFL wanted to add more awards to lengthen the event, they could add categories that would yield good video nominees like:  best rush, most dramatic moment, most exciting regular season game, etc.I think the fans would love it, and the players would probably get a kick out of it too.At this point, anything is better than the Pro Bowl game itself which neither the fans nor the players seem to enjoy.

Still think the best thing is/was an obstacle course type event. Used to love watching those.
Can we please stop re-hashing this idea?0% it will ever happen again. It would be stupid for the players to compete and put their careers and tens of millions of dollars on the line for little or no reward.

This is an awesome idea.

How much revenue does the pro bowl generate for the NFL?Put it all in the pot, and let the players on the winning team, who actually played in the game, split the pot.NFL can chalk it up to an advertising expense instead of a profit center.Other than that - NFL should ditch the game - pay for a week-long trip for the pro-bowl players - like a sales contest - to reward the players, but then be done with the whole production.

I miss the skills competition. Like the heisman i wouldn't watch an awards show either, athletes may like that idea though. I am selfish though, I would love to be watching some skills competition right now instead of mediocre college hoops. I swear all the good games are on when I am busy.

I don't know exact numbers but is the Pro Bowl really that big of a reward for these players?Get "voted" to the pro bowl, keep same incentives but just do the skills challenge instead of the dreadful game.

People will only watch a game, not awards shows or anything else. Active players don't want to play and risk injury.I think the answer could be some kind of "retired players" game. Any player who has filed paperwork to be retired is eligible as long as they are under age 45. That way, grandpa doesn't get killed out there. Make it 30 minutes long since they are likely out of shape. For example, Bret Favre is 43, maybe he'd like to suit up one more time in front of the camera and play in an exhibition. People can watch some potential hall of famers one last time.

Robert Edwards says a skills competition is a bad idea.
Guys are going to play sports during the offseason, some will get hurt doing it. See, Terrell Suggs. Not seeing how injury risk effects the idea of a skills competition. Likelihood is certainly less than if they're playing a game.

Nate Odomes and Chad Pennington too. I have no interest in watching a skills competition. In the early 1990s there was a Pro Quarterback Club or something to that effect. Out of boredom I watched their skills competition one time. It got lame after 10 minutes. Watching Bernie Kosar and Boomer Esiason and Randall Cunningham throwing balls at targets wasn't thrilling. The Pro Bowl is awful too. I think the last time I watched it in full was the one where Art Still scored a touchdown. I did put it on last year when I got home from food shopping. There was a putrid play-by-play announcer. He was so awful that I decided to leave the game on. That guy and Mike Mayock may have been drunk. If drunk announcers are in the mix again tomorrow I may watch this thing.

They should have a swimsuit competition featuring the players wives and girlfriends. Some of these luscious ladies would love the exposure, you know dudes would watch, and these competitions do surprisingly well among women who like to scout the competition. Kind of doubt the NFL would go for it, though.

Brent Musberger could host it too...

If anyone cares, Edwards did go on to have a successful career in the CFL. So he was able to make a comeback of sorts. Not saying it compares to what he could have had, but he did make a recovery.

they put their careers on the line every time the step in the weight room. should they stop doing that too? they are just as likely to injure themselves lifting 300 pounds over their heads as they are playing tug-o-war. a race would be the main event of this. that's something they would be doing with or without a skills competition to stay in shape. makes no difference. every rookie basically goes through an obstacle course in the combine, and they have been practicing all those drills leading up to the combine, and they will be doing at least some of them throughout their careers in training camp.

i would have an awards show. name 3 nominees at each position before hand. give out 3rd team, 2nd team and first team honors at the show.best safety, best wr, best guard ect...you could also add best overall run blocker, best overall run stopper, best overall pass rusher and some others which would be open for all positions.fly everyone out to hawaii again and have the skills competition. not necessarily the same people that went to the awards. this is for the fans mostly so ya, name value is going to decide much of it.tug-o-war with lineman afc vs nfc, offense vs defense, maybe the best 2 team o-lines or something like that. have a race. qb accuracy challenge. stuff like that.in march before the draft (if this is legal&possible), do what the NBA does. rookies vs sophmores. that gives the NFL a chance to see these rookies play again NFL talent. gives the fans a dash of football when there is normally not any football. the rookies will play hard. i think the sophmores would as well. if not the sophmores exclusively, make it open to the NFL. would be mostly free agents. you can also get a bunch of vets who play for the minimum to show up. 25k to play, 50k to win.

The NFL Probowl gets good ratings. Better ratings than lots of other sporting events. You guys can ##### all you want about how terrible it is, but as long as people keep watching I don't think its going anywhere.
