Why the Eagles traded McNabb to the Redskins (1 Viewer)

While Shanahan is a good coach, it is not like he is Bill Walsh. He already had Elway when he got the Broncos job and in the years since Elway's retirement, he was unable to find a good QB. He can't "make" a good QB.
You do realize that Shanahan worked with the Broncos and Elway back in the 80s and that Elway had most of his best years in the NFL, in the 80s and 90s, when working with Shanahan, right? Do you not remember the work Shanahan did with Jake Plummer? Pretty much every QB Shahanan has worked with for any length of time in the NFL played his best when working with Shanahan....Elway, Steve Young, Brian Griese, Jake Plummer, Jay Cutler, etc.I realize that a decent portion of fantasy football players hate Shanahan because of how he has driven them nuts over the years with his RB situations, but you can't ignore the facts.
I am not a Shanahan hater by any stretch of the imagination. You are also leaving out some facts. Yes, he worked with Elway, but Elway was Elway. And Young was Young playing in Walsh's system. This is Steve Young that sent Joe Montana to the bench. These were HOF talent QBs.Let's look at Griese. He was Shanahan's starting QB for 4 years. He peaked in his 2nd year, earning a Pro-Bowl berth(odd, since he only played 10 games - lost 6 due to injury), but he had a good year. However, the next two years, Griese regressed. Now, if you are going to give credit to Shanahan for coaching up Griese, then doesn't he share some blame for his decline?Plummer was the same, a 4-year career with Shanahan with his best year coming in his 2nd year and then decline. Again, if you are going to praise him for improving these players, then he deserves some blame for their decline. As far as Cutler, he has only had one year somewhere else in a short career, so the jury is still out.You also left out the QBs Schroeder and Beuerlein, whom he coached when he was with the Raiders. They had better years with other teams/coaches.I posted he was a good coach( maybe even a very good coach), but I don't think he is a great coach. Walsh could win with every QB he had...even Elvis Grbac. And, Walsh had an eye for talent, drafting Montana in the 3rd and seeing the potential of Young while he was playing on a very bad Buccaneer team. Therefore, I seriously doubt that the Eagles traded McNabb to the Redskins because they were afraid of Shanahan teaming up with Bradford(which is the point of this thread). The Eagles traded McNabb because they are ready to turn the keys over to Kolb. Time will tell whether or not that is a good decision.

First off, Elway and Young started a combined 12 seasons under Shanahan and a combined 12 seasons without Shanahan. They won a combined 3 league MVPs with Shanahan and a combined 0 MVPs without him. Elway's average ANYA with Shanahan was 5.99, and without him it was 5.10. 4 of Elway's 5 worst seasons in terms of QB rating came without Shanahan. 4 of Elway's 5 best seasons in terms of QB rating came with Shanahan. Yes, Elway was a Hall of Famer... but he was still a RADICALLY better QB with Shanahan than he was without Shanahan. As for Steve Young... Young earned 3 first team AP All Pro awards in his 3 years working with Shanahan. Young earned 0 first team AP All Pro awards in his 5 years as a starter without Shanahan. Of his 8 seasons as a starter, all three of his seasons with Shanahan rank among his top four seasons in ANYA. Steve Young led the league in ANYA four times in his career- he did it three times with Shanahan, and just once without him. Again, Steve Young was a first ballot HoFer, but he was a RADICALLY better QB with Shanahan than he was without Shanahan. Second off, Griese. Griese was never a very good QB... but he was still a better QB with Shanahan than he was without him. You could hold it against Shanahan that Griese never became a stud, but that'd be really inconsistent- you don't credit Shanahan for turning Elway and Young into Hall of Famers, yet you penalize him for not doing the same for Griese? You can't have it both ways. Either you credit Shanahan for turning Elway and Young into first ballot Hall of Famers, or you have to give him respect for getting the most out of a scrub like Griese.Third off, Plummer. Plummer had a QB rating of 84.3 with Shanahan and a rating of 69.0 without him. That's an ABSURD difference. For comparison... Rex Grossman's career QB rating was 69.5. Jake Plummer had a lower QB rating than Rex Grossman until he joined up with Shanahan. Then he continuously got better (his best year was his THIRD year, not his second) before he finally fell apart because he didn't have the mental toughness to handle competition in his fourth year. Still, Plummer threw 24 more INTs than TDs without Shanahan, and 24 more TDs than INTs with Shanahan. There was a night-and-day difference betweeen Plummer with Shanny and Plummer without Shanny.Fourth off... Schroeder and Beuerlein. Schroeder played about 12 games total with Shanahan, and Beuerlein played about 8 (and was a rookie to boot). That's the only black mark on Shanahan's resume- that he coached a terrible QB for 12 games and wasn't able to turn him into a pro bowler in that span. Every QB who has ever started 16 games for Shanahan has been a pro bowler with Shanahan. Outside of Schroeder, every QB Shanahan has coached in his entire NFL coaching history has had a dramatically better QB rating with Shanahan than he has had without him. All of them.Shanahan has an unimpeachable record when it comes to QBs. I don't know if any other coach in the league has produced such a dramatic difference in QB rating/ANYA in seasons with and without.
