Why was Taylor in Florida and not with the team? (1 Viewer)

They were talking on WDFN in Detroit this morning about how injured Detroit Lions players have to stay in town and rehab at the Lion facility and under their supervision.

Did Sean just go home for the night or has he been away from the team since his injury?

He was rehabbing from a football related injury.

Some people have emailed me or called unsure of why Sean was not with the team, so I figured I'd clear that up if necessary while I have a spare minute between phone calls.

As is the norm, the Redskins do not require many injured players to travel with the team. Sean Taylor, recovering from a knee sprain, receiver James Thrash (ankle) and fullback Mike Sellers (back) were all left off the trip and did not make the team flight to Tampa Saturday afternoon. Again, that's normal for injured players. Those not making the trip - a group that always includes practice-squad players as well - are essentially off for the weekend, and have to report back to Redskins Park Monday for the beginning of the work week.

Now, part of the reason why those injured players are not traveling with the team is to avoid excess travel. No sense constricting legs and ankles and risking swelling to these kind of ligament strains in the air. So, ostensibly, flying would be frowned upon in this case. However, we do not know all of the details yet. According to an earlier Miami Herald report, neighbors of Taylor say there have been multiple robbery attempts on his property recently, and, just guessing here, that could have had something to do with why Sean was down in Florida.

He was with the team at Redskins Park for the team meeting and walkthrough that day, and obviously traveled to Miami after that.

Also, there were some reports earlier in the day that Sean was in Florida to get a second opinion on his knee. I have chatted with several people here, including team officials, who said that if he was in Florida for a second opinion it was news to them
LinkGibbs confirmed yesterday that he'd had permission to return to Florida a week ago because of the earlier break-in. They had not discussed this trip south, but he had no other obligations to the team aside from being back at the practice facility by Monday for the team meeting, which presumably he was going to be.

I saw this covered yesterday. I read somewhere that he was not required to go to the game since he was out with an injury. He had a break in at this place last week and had permission to go home and take care of things because of the break in last week.

I believe that we are going to find out that this is some sort acquaintance of friend of a friend of Taylor's that shot him. Someone that knows when he's out of town. Taylor decides to be at home when he wouldn't normally be and bust this chump and gets shot. My money is on this being an inside job. Somebody that knew Taylor or knew someone that knew Taylor...Maybe Taylor threw a party at his big house he buys with his signing bonus. Bunch of people he doesn't know show up. Someone cases the joint while at the party. Comes back to rob him....

The unanimous accounts of his teammates say that since his daughter was born, he was a changed man and had excluded a lot of people from his life who had been negative influences. He'd even moved to a different neighborhood. To me, this either looks like a standard robbery gone wrong, or an attack directed at him by someone in his "old life". If it's the latter, the people who come to mind first are the gang bangers who stole those ATV's from him that caused him to go confront them and get criminally charged, but I don't pretend to have enough insight into his personal life to say that that's anything more than a guess.

His house was recently broken into and he was there to protect it.
This is the vibe I'm getting from what little info is out there. As horrible as the loss of Sean is, how bad would it have been if he hadn't been there and it was just his fiancee and baby?

I can agree with the latter here. That's why I tempered it with a friend of a friend. Maybe someone finds out where his new place is and decides to pay a visit. If this were not an acquaintance I can't imagine them hitting the same place in the same neighborhood over and over without hitting any of the other houses in the neighborhood. I would be willing to bet that this is an upscale neighborhood with extra police protection. No way someone hits the same home over and over unless they know the person who has the place...

Crazy.

Its hard to imagine why he did not have extra security added since the break in(s). Maybe he did, in the form of Brinks, ADP, etc.

I suppose no one would want to go through life with bodyguards sleeping in the house though.

One positive thing coming from this is that it appear that his fiance and child were not injured.
