Will Sidney Rice play this year? (1 Viewer)

Any Vikings homers out there who have an idea one way or the other if Sidney Rice will play at all this season?

My homer feeling is without a doubt. He's shown himself to be nothing other then a professional in his personal conduct and it's not like it's a season ending surgery. Not to mention Brett is back and we all know how good it was for a guy that has all the tools to be elite have a QB that can get him the ball.

The real question is, "how fast will he return?" If he wanted to be here 100% then he would've had the surgery months ago. I think he takes his sweet time because he's shown what he can do. Since he's in the final year of a 500k contract why should he risk anything?

I have a feeling we will know the answer based on their interest in Houshmandzadeh...if they go get him and pay big to do so, then Rice is done for the year, if they don't then they feel he will be back without a doubt.

That is not so black and white. Surgery isn't something you take lightly. They try to be conservative and let things heal on their own. After all, he had the entire off season to heal.

My understanding is that Housh would be cheap - his contract (this season) is guaranteed by the Hawks. The figure I heard was 850K with Seattle responsible for the balance.

Truth, but when July rolled around and he was still having trouble a half of a year later it should have been indicative that he needs to evaluate his comfort level with playing with the pain or go in for surgery.

IIRC, he suffered a setback in TC then had to get opinions once again based on the setback.

Not true. The first indication that all was not right for the rest of us came July 8th when Sid missed Fitzgerald's camp and Rosenhaus tweeted he is still suffering lingering pain from the hip injury. Linky

There was an MRI.. then a follow-up MRI that showed significant changes and then he was told that if he played on it "as is" he could jeopardize his career. Who knows the exact truth? As far as playing this season, much depends on how he feels around week 8-9 when the team will need to decide on IR. And how much conditioning will he be able to do during the 8 weeks? If its 8 weeks plus a couple weeks to get in football shape, we're looking at 3/4 of the fantasy regular season.

Anyone with an educated guess at the nature of the injury and what kind of conditioning will he be able to do during rehab?

With this type of injury/surgery is there any reason to expect him not to return by say week 10 or so?
Rice, meanwhile, said on his Twitter account Tuesday that he had a "great pool workout" with fellow hip-surgery patient Jonny Flynn, the point guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Flynn had his procedure done six weeks ago and is expected to need another two or three months to recover.

I thought that it was considered likely that Rice would be back around week 8?

Even if he comes back around week 10, would he really be up to speed physically, and from an in-game speed perspective? He certainly won't have his automatic click with Brett "the gunslinger from down under" Favre, right?

I would not use a high pick on him, and I hope that the Vikings trade for a high profile receiver who knows the ropes if they want to win RIGHT NOW.

I think that he will return this year. I also feel that if they thought he wasn't going to return, they would have made a harder play for Jackson or Housh. However, my worry is that when he does come back... how on earth is he going to pick right up where he left off? Let alone not being in great shape... his timing and chemistry with Favre can't be where it was last year. They didn't even have any work together in the preseason.

I think Rice not being in game shape has more teeth than any timing issues between Rice and Favre. Favre reported late, had zero history with Rice and only completed 2 passes to him in preseason games last year. Not to mention, I think their timing would naturally be improved opposed to last year at this time if only because of the 90+ or so passes they completed in real game circumstances.

The Vikings could have used Rice tonight. Hopefully we will see him on the field in the not too distant future. Anybody know the date when the Vikings have to decide if they are going to put him on the IR list?

I don't expect him back before Week 10. And I think whether he comes back then will depend on where the Vikings are this year. The bottom could fall out quick in Minnesota. Give all the credit you wish to the NO secondary, but I really didn't like what I saw from that Minn pass attack. W/o Peterson for any period, this is probably a 5-6 win team.

spoken like someone who has never had surgery.
:hifive: That sounds logical to me. Hip surgury is probably one of the more serious types because it affects the movement of your whole body. If he is not totally 100%, why would he risk coming out and showcasing damaged goods in a contract year?Plus, his agent is Drew Rosenhaus. There is no way he will advise him to rush back onto the field. I would bet that come week six, he ends up on IR.

Rotowworld had an update on Rice today. They claim that he will be off crutches in about two weeks. Granted being off crutches doesn't mean he will be playing, but Rotoworld speculated that he will be back around mid season. I don't believe it, but here is the report."Rice injured the hip in the playoffs last year but didn't have surgery until late last month. He is still on crutches but on Monday was able to do rehab work without restrictions. The receiver is targeting a return around midseason"

Any further updates on Rice?
Relax.Its an 8+ week injury.
I know. He was just dropped in my league and I want to know if he will play this season or if he is done for the year??
dropped from mine also, he will be available thursday the 23rd. I will wait for VJax news to break and if it doesn't by Thursday and he has to serve the full 6 games I am going to asume he is lost for the season, dump him and take a flier on Sydney Rice. All my WR's byes are covered and are late, and it would take a stud to get in the line up with AJ, Jennings, Nicks and T.O. so the johnny come lately waiver gem wr doesnt interest me too much. Rice was top 10 last year and if healthy could see my line up in the later part of the season and playoffs. If you can roster him do it.

I think waiting as long as he did to get the surgery was actually kind of unprofessional. Is there a reason he waited until the very end of the off season?

Who said that was his decision? What a coincidence for him to get the surgery just a day or so after Favre informed the team he was coming back.

It's always the players decision. The team only makes recommendations. I understand that at some point it became a tool in the Brett Favre love fest, but he had the issue since the end of the season and had the opportunity to have the surgery and be almost fully recovered by now. For some reason he opted to take a wait and see approach.

Have you read the reports? Circumstances changes and he tweaked it further. From what I understand, he went to three different doctors in the offseason and all 3 said no surgery. He then aggravates it and needs surgery, and you are questioning his decision? Surgery is the last option in almost every injury as it is dramatically invasive and drastic. Natural healing is preferred by almost every doctor out there. Have you ever suffered a sports injury?

Have you? All 3 did not say not to have surgery. I believe 2 out of the 3 said TO HAVE the surgery.

Lighten the tool factor. They thought it would heal on its own (best choice). They were wrong... Happens all too often... but to blame Rice on some ulterior motive is speculation and irresponsible.

It is.. what it is! Now the original question.. will he play this year?
