Witten vs. Cooley (1 Viewer)

Hey guys,

So I'm on a Redskins board, and they talked about Witten's new contract. Then, many of them told me that Witten is good, but not AS good as Cooley.

Witten might be on the same level as Cooley, but I totally disagree that Cooley is better...

So, would you guys tell me who you think is better, and which team you root for (so I can tell if you're Cowboys fans or Redskins fans posting)?

TRG REC YDS Y/R TD FPT RANK

cooley: 2005 WAS 103 71 774 10.9 7 119 4

witten: dal 89 66 757 11.5 6 112 6

according to last year's numbers cooley's ahead

according to size, age, round drafted they are even

Witten's absolutely the better all around player. He was a true two-way tight end coming out of college whereas Cooley was a one-dimensional pass catcher (albeit a very good one).

Relative to their fantasy value, both Cooley and Witten will be challenged to repeat last year's numbers. Witten stands to lose the most from Terrell Owens' signing. Owens is a beast in the red zone and one of the best scoring receivers in league history; he's bound to rob Witten of a handful of red zone targets this year all things being equal. In Cooley's case, he's got two challenges. One, the Redskins now have three receivers (Moss, Lloyd, Randle El). Two, he's got to adjust to playing a more traditional TE role since Saunders isn't a fan of the H-back typically.

Net-net, both are still solid fantasy options. But if you're not going to grab one of the truly elite tight ends, I'm not sure either Witten or Cooley justify their current ADP when I think you can grab production that's not too far down the totem pole several rounds later.

If you're speaking about true NFL worth, Witten is by far and away the better asset.

Hey Jason, how do you think the rook TE affects Witten's #s if at all? or Polite playing TE?

It helps more than anything. Parcells has said he wants to run more 2-TE sets this year and Fasano will be, if he's up to snuff, the blocking back in those formations allowing Witten to stay in the passing routes more often.

Cooley is the next Clint Didier. Great catching TE

Witten, even more this year than last.
Ummm... Cooley kicked the colon-cake out of Witten last year... so I'm not sure how to read this. I own Cooley, and I like him for a solid top 10 TE season.

Cooley may have out produced Whitten last year, but that is more an element that Cooley was being used as a wing back.

This year Whitten is also to play the wing back slot, and be involved more on other true TE setting plays.

If you actually watched Whitten play, as a football player he was fantastic. As a fantasy player he was medicore. The reason as a football player he was fantastic is because he was one of the main guys that developed plays, whether it was a block or a jam or a catch. Being an owner of Whitten last year it was very easy to notice these things.

Add in the fact he going to be having the same opportunity of types of line ups as Cooley(wing back) and that Whitten will be on the field practically every play this season and its Whitten by a landslide.

I don't like either.

TO + Glenn + Bledsoe = :(

And Al Saunders doesn't do Wing Backs. He does do "go pretend you're a WR, but run over the safety" though.
