It's hard rooting for team you know is doomed (1 Viewer)

Venting my spleen this morning, please indulge me for a moment. I'm a Ravens fan and the past few seasons have been pretty cool getting to watch Lamarvelous up close and personal every week. He is exciting, talented and a once in a generation player and the fact that he plays for the team I root for is awesome. This season he has reached an even higher level of play, one where the Mannings, Bradys and Brees' of the NFL once roamed. Problem is...the Ravens are destined to lose in the playoffs again, it's a near certainty. Their defense against the pass is atrocious, I'm talking like puke inducingly bad. And as good as the offense is there is no way their defense is going to hold up against the best teams in the post season. So i'm kind of bummed even with the big division win last night cuz the team is Dead Man Walking at this point.

Any of y'use ever feel that way and can anyone talk me off my ledge? All thoughts and comments welcome.
OK, it's time for a Benglas fan to check in. All I have to say is...........

never mind.

OK, Bengals fan here.

It's pretty depressing to see one of the finest QB/Rec tandems you'll ever see languishing in mediocrity in a year where nearly everyone had 'em tabbed as a legit contender. Year after year, the FO/owners make terrible move after terrible move. D is an afterthught in Cincy. Joe is running for life.

Lamar is unreal, prolly best running/passer in NFL history, the move he made down right sideline that put you at the one yd line was incredible. You're in first place. I wouldn't be cryin' in my soup yet.

I grew up a Lions fan and became a fan of the titans (oilers) when they moved to Nashville. You’ll get no sympathy here.

FWIW, I’m cheering hard for a Detroit vs king Henry SB.

Hi I’m Dan, and my team hasn’t won a playoff game in 25 years.
Personally I've felt this with some lean years in the early 70s after JohnnyU / Earl Morrall and before Bert Jones, and after Bert Jones and before Peyton Manning. The latter was a long stretch. Teams like the Browns, who have never been to a Super Bowl and are now at another low point, I really feel sorry for that franchise. I'm really happy to see the recent success of the Lions, who has had their fair share of heartbreak for their fans. Go @BobbyLayne !!

"Hi Dan - we see you and we acknowledge your pain"

signed - all Colts fans waiting for a QB under the age of 35 who can complete a pass

Between Peyton and Luck, you burned your shares of elite QBs for our lifetime. Only Green Bay has the exception.

prolly best running/passer in NFL history
Probably true. Steve Young comes to mind - he didn’t have the running talent but seemed highly intelligent when he picked his moments.

Jayden might just be Lamar 2.0. (Obviously early and I don’t want to jinx him)

Agree that Lamar is the best but I’m responding merely to get Fran Tarkenton and Randall Cunningham honorable mentions.

There is this team from NJ that I root for. They gave this bum $160 Million and then refused to pay their best player peanuts and let him walk to their arch rivals. Now he is dominating the NFL and will beat us twice a year until he retires.

Yeah, hold my Classic Coke…
And they just lost to the Carolina Panthers. Beat that !!!

Also I would add, you win games by scoring more points than your opponent scores. You're doing that 70% of the time. And averaging 6.5 more points per game than your opponents. It's the comparison of the two numbers, not one number or the other alone. But I know, some people believe in "defense wins championships". Tell that to ... well, almost every Super Bowl winner of the last 20 years.
Yeah but in this case you're talking to a Ravens fan who last won the SB with defense.

This season the Ravens defense is perhaps not as good as they have been for a long time.

I think the Ravens are one of the best managed teams in the NFL for a long time and continue to be.
The bolded isn't true. The Ravens defense in 2012/2013 was in the bottom half of the league (I think way down in the 20s). They kept trotting Lewis & Reed out there when both were washed out. Their offense - and some luck - won that SB for them.

The year before was a better team, and Cundiff/Evans gakked it up. They would have crushed the Giants.
You're right. I completely blanked they won with Flacco too. My bad.

As you say this was more of an offense than the one they won with Ray in his prime.

I'm getting old.

After bypassing this thread for weeks, I finally decided to check in to see which team was so hopelessly doomed.

A hungry Baltimore Ravens squad.

I'll raise you a 7-2 team quarterbacked by Sam Darnold.

This is why I’ll never respect Raven’s fans. half of them are cast off Redskins fans who gave up on their franchise.

The other half have been gifted, a Pittsburgh Steelers quality, front office and organization from day one.

Granted they’re never going anywhere with that running back playing quarterback in the playoffs, but this is why I could never root for the purple and black

Hot Take!!!!!

C'mon, @Joe Schmo - buck up, little trooper! It's Steelers week!
Oh I'm ready, and after my initial poutfest I'm over it. I love watching the Ravens with Lamarvelous so will sit back and live in then now and enjoy the heck out of it. It could be a lot worse, at least we don't have a faulty stadium, crippled qb with a crippling contract or a front office that has no clue how to be successful. That would suck.

Fran Tarkington was one of the first running back at QB and he didn’t win Jack **** either

That's the spirit! Enjoy the ride.

Only one team wins it all. Everyone else is a "disappointment" depending on how you structure your season.

I remember when the Lebron heat teams that went to 4 finals and won 2. Every loss was miserable bc of the expectations of a championship.

As a Dolphin fan, the hope is we 1)get to the playoffs and 2) Win a playoff game. Both / Either seem unlikely as the injury bug has bitten us again, but I'm sure it is worse if you are a Bills fan where your team is good but Mahomes is usually better,

One of the great things in life is rooting for a sports team. It takes you away from the everyday grind and problems that life gives us. Loving your team is personal and is something no one can take away from us. Every year it gives us hope ....until it doesn't, but even knowing that is a possibility, it doesn't stop us from having renewed hope each year. I think that is good for the soul.

As a Cowboys fan, I have more right to ***** and moan before Raven’s fans
You certainly do. Sounds like you're lashing out a bit at another fanbase because of the way things are in Jerry World, though. And I'm sure this doesn't apply to you, but Dallas has had more bandwagon fans in my lifetime than any franchise I can think of

I’m not lashing out at anyone. My language is harsh.

I agree but- Can Cowboys fans still be bandwagon fans when they haven’t been good in nearly 30 years?

its ok to cheer for your team even though you know your team is bad. sometimes it helps if you have more booze. seriously though, I respect the fans who stick with it through the rough years far more than I respect the bandwagon jumpers. The True fans love their team no matter how good or how bad they are.

I think your last sentence is best characterized in the move "Invincible".

I saw more people jump on the Cowboys in the 70s/80s/90s. That's what I was referencing. Kids, I could understand. I saw way too many adults flip, though.

Plus, I wasn't labeling all (or even most) Dallas fans that way, especially lately.

I'm an Orioles fan. Other than a few scattered bright years, I've had very little but incompetence for the last 40 years after being spoiled for so long.

The Orioles have a bright future. Their recent minor league talent is a glutton of riches.

They do now, though they need to learn how to develop pitchers and spend money on FAs. Hopefully, the new ownership will loosen the purse strings.

oh yes, pitching. It's the doom of fantasy and real GMs. Even when it's good, it is bound to cause heartache in the near future.

I'm a Bengals guy, and there's a lot of die hard Cleveland fans around here. And while I always found them loud and obnoxious, I couldn't help but feeling ***ty for 'em when Modell ripped there hearts out. That was an affront to football fans (I think) everywhere. You'd have to look pretty far to find such loyal group ( better than our fan base). My dislike for the ratbirds began instantly, as profound as my distain for stiller fans.

Unlike Baltimore, at least they were smart enough to keep the Cleveland Browns name.

Ravens are doomed ?

Try being a fan of the Browns then come talk to me
yeah I feel for the Browns fans. The Watson signing pretty much guaranteed they are going to struggle cap wise and to put up a competitive team for the life of that terrible contract.

team is gonna have a hard time resigning anyone once the contract is up because the players more or less know what we know. And they see this first hand so anyone who wants to win a championship will likely avoid Cleveland. That contract (fully guaranteed) will be an albatross around their collective necks for the next however many years..... its a bad scene and the nightmare has just begun.
