Worst ever WR to lead their team in receiving... (1 Viewer)

BigRed

Footballguy
Either yds or # receps, take your pick

Colts again have to probably to back to the 80s somewhere, I'll check. Matt Bouza or some such probably.

PS and FYI this isn't "most disappointing" and sure as heck isn't "biggest POS" (Lord knows there are a TON of those)

How about Walter Stanley - Green Bay Packers, 1987...672 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns...career totals...2213 yards and 5 touchdowns over 8 seasons...That's pretty crappy!

Wayne Capers, Colts, 1985

438 yards and 4 touchdowns

career totals... 822 yards and 5 touchdowns...

Who the heck is Capers? I don't remember him at all.

I'd say this guy may be tough to beat...

Ken Margerum...

1981 - Chicago Bears

584 yards, 1 touchdown

Lifetime - 1,336 yards and 8 touchdowns

Wow. That is a good find.Being a Bears fan, I was thinking about digging up a couple of their worst WR leaders in the last 2-3 decades... but none are as bad as your example.

Yeah, but Carruth was actually a pretty good receiver. Unfortunately he wasn't quite as good of a criminal.

I can't believe no one's brought up Travis Taylor 2004: 34/421/0.
Taylor and Pinkston were the two that came to mind when I read the title.Roddy White had the most yards of any WR in Atlanta 30 receptions, 506 yards, 0 TDs (beat by Crumpler though) Az Hakim, Detroit 2003: 49/449/4

this would be the modern day guy--you beat me to himsome of the players listed played in 14 game era, which squews the #'s slightly
You're only looking at a single season, while I believe the "worst" in this thread is being measured over the course of the receiver's career. I'd nominate another one in Reidel Anthony, the Bucs leader in 1998:
Code:

I may be wrong, but it seems like one year James Thrash was the Skins top WR.
No, thank goodness. Only the Eagles. That's probably about the only brag that the 'Skins have over the Eagles during the last six years though.

I nominate Ray Alexander - '88 Cowboys

The Saints had nothing at WR between Wes Chandler (left for San Diego after 1980 season) and Eric Martin (came on board in 1985). Jeff Groth led the teams' WRs in receptions and yards three straight seasons:

1981 (played 15 games)

20 380 19.0 1 TD

1982 (9-game strike season, played all 9)

30 383 12.8 1 TD

1983 (played 16 games)

49 585 11.9 1 TD

1984 (played 16 games)

33 487 14.8 0 TD (led WRs in rcptns, 2nd in yards)

Groth was a good guy off the field, but a highly marginal NFL player.

:lmao: He was a bust #1 draft pick for the Steelers in the early 80's...I thought he just vanished off the face of the earth though. I didn't realize he "led" a team in receiving!!! Steelers apparently gave up on him too soon! :lmao:

Are we talking about the worst single-season performance to lead a team in receiving or the worst career player to lead a team in receiving for one year?

I have to look up the stats, but the Giants have been notorious for their awful receivers up until toomer.

Did Stacey Robinson ever lead the G-men? "Touchdown" Baker and Mark Ingram werent exactly stellar either, and we are talking Super Bowl team WRs here.

Damn was Simms underated.

Quick, which WR had the best stats. on the S.B. winning 1986 Giants with 31/534/5?

Bobby Johnson.

Here's a surprising one:

Chiefs 2001 Marvin "Snoop" Minnis - 14 games, 33 recepts, 511 yds, and 1 TD

He was the leading RECEIVER that year. However, Tony G had 73 recepts (which led the team) and Priest had 62 receptions.

But still...SNOOP MINNIS actually led all WR's?!?! Yuck!

If it's the former, someone find me the WR who led his team's wideouts with less than 20 rcptns (as Jeff Groth did in New Orleans in 1981),

Once again, I'm shocked the conversation doesn't begin with this team. Ladies and gentlemen your 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers!

Only 13 games for Stingley ... and totally agreed, he was headed for big things. That 1976 Patriots squad (11-3) had a strange offense by modern standards. The passing game was pretty moribund. QB Steve Grogan accounted for 30 TDs, though -- 12 of them rushing. However, the team as a total rushed for almost 3000 yards at 4.99 ypc with no 1000-yard rusher (four guys, including Grogan, over 600 yards rushing).

Hart Lee Dykes led the Patriots in receiving in 1989 with 49 rec 795 yds.
