Wow....listen to this homeless guy.... (2 Viewers)

:goodposting: :excited: And that guy sounds exceptionally intelligent for a homeless guy. Hopefully this internet recognition can help him land on his feet.
Again - intelligence and homelessness aren't exclusive. A great many of the homeless folks are pretty average type folks that are in a tough spot and don't have the support / $$$ around them that most of us do. Yes, in most cases, the bad spot is the result of their own actions - usually addiction / alcohol / drug related.

But I'm not surprised at all to see intelligent people in that position.

Again, good point. But don't forget that mental illness is as much or more of a factor in homelessness than is addiction. And like addiction, mental illness does not discriminate based on intelligence.

Between this and the girl singing Home with her dad, 2011 is shaping up as the feel-good year for the Internet.

I love this story. Hope it works out well for this guy long-term.

Yep, I agree with you guys. If anything, I find that some forms of mental illness are more common among more intelligent people.I just thought that level of instrospection coming from that particular guy was surpising. But as the saying goes, you can't judge a book by it's cover and that guy rocks!

Great story! I'm just hoping we don't find out that this is a small-market radio personality that is pulling a prank. :lmao:

I certainly hope that he's legitimately clean and can stay clean. Wouldn't be the first time an addicted homeless guy claimed to be drug free in order to make a buck. Hopefully he makes the most of his opportunity.
News for you. He might not really be drug free now. And if he is drug free now, he might fall off the wagon in the future. It's a gigantic struggle for people with all the resources and support available to break some addictions. For a homeless guy, it's way tougher. I'm NOT saying you're doing this but the whole "jump through this hoop of proving to me that you meet my standard of drug / alcohol use" before I want to help you thing is distasteful to me. Again, I'm not talking to you grove, but I see people put forth that sort of feeling sometimes. My first thought isn't "I hope he's really not using". My first thought is "I hope this guy can get things together". The first is absolutely related to the second. But I think how one prioritizes those desires is a big part of the answer in how we help folks.J
Oh, I agree. I wasn't trying to be dismissive at all when I said that I hope he makes the most of his opportunity. Drug and alcohol addiction are terrible things and hopefully this opportunity helps him to remain sober and back on his feet. Although radio can certainly be an industry that doesn't exactly encourage sobriety. But it sounds like he may be offered some opportunities that make it easier.Dealing with addiction is extremely difficult for both the addicted and those around them. Trying to figure out the line between support and enabling is incredibly difficult, especially when you get used to the constant lying about anything and everything. But like you said, without a support network it's exponentially tougher to get sober.

Exactly. My little sister was one of the most intelligent, creative, athletic people I have ever met. She had full ride scholarship offers for both academics & athletics to almost every school in the nation. She has been homeless for almost 9 years now thanks to mental illness. It's an awful feeling not being able to help her.

So I tuned in for a few seconds before they went to the  music. He got an offer to host one show in NY, some other commercial deal for $10k and one offer that we all would love, an all expenses paid trip to Hilo, Hawaii to do a commercial. Not too shabby. Nice little turnaround for the guy.
I love it - a guy throws his life away to drugs and alcohol and now he's got people throwing praise and money at him for "saying" he's clean now. Don't get me wrong, I wish him the best but it does annoy me that people that destroy their own lives get cheered while there's no accolades for the millions of average joes just chugging along with their lives doing the right thing.

Dude.Take a nap, and get out on the other side of the bed.

Here's hoping a few years from now he manages to not only have his life in order but becomes an inspiration for smooth voiced homeless people everywhere.

This story is at least a couple of thousand years old...

But you know what cstu, I can't criticize. Lots of people (myself included) can easily fall into that "older brother" role.

If I could offer a bit of advice: Resist it. The older brother in the story is not a good place to be. Be happy for the guy that winds up at the right place.

Peace.

J

13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

28 “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

The top video at this link is an interview with his 90 (not 92!) year old mom and is well worth watching. It is sad, thought provoking, and optimistic all at the same time.

This whole whirlwind story is genuinely interesting and amazing... hopefully it all works out very well for him and puts him back on his feet.

He has been so overwhelmed with job and other offers that people are going to help him sift through them and carefully consider them before he decides.

E.g. he doesn't really need a vacation to Hawaii... he needs a job, and hopefully a career.

NFL Films looks for golden-voiced panhandler

Posted by Josh Katzowitz

If you haven’t seen the video of a former radio announcer turned panhandler, here it is, via the Columbus Dispatch.

The man, Ted Williams, has incredible vocal cords, and showing just how quickly viral videos work, news broke this morning that the Cleveland Cavaliers had offered him a job.

Now, NFL Films might be interested as well.

According to CNBC’s Darren Rovell, NFL Films is looking to touch base with Williams. Hopefully, it’s to put him to work so he can make real money using his voice and not to have to stand on the side of dirty freeways hoping for a little pocket change.

The father was wrong to treat the younger son that way. Of course he should have welcomed him back but he shouldn't not have treated him like returning hero. The older brother had every right to feel disrespected by his father, but he also should have been happy to see his brother come home.
