WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, DET (1 Viewer)

I’m not overly worried. I’m saying that I’m getting what I paid for probably in redraft. Was hoping for number one overall wr outcome but he will be a nice ppr wr1 for sure. Still possible range of outcomes but feels diminished after one week.
I bet if you look at all the overall WR1s over the the last decade, other than maybe Kupp, they all had games worse than 6/71/1. Don't put too much into this game just because it was the 1st.

Critical 3rd and 1 at midfield, game winning touchdown drive, what does Ben Johnson call? As the teams huddle up we see
  • Lions have 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR)
  • Chiefs have mirrored the personnel with a 4-2-5 nickel package
Typically we might expect the team to go spread offense with a pistol formation, running back offset from the QB, maybe double or triple WRs to the boundary on one side, or all four receivers (3 WR 1 TE) stacked up outside on a double wing - something that will spread the defense out so they can attack the middle.

Detroit lines up in a tight power formation, offset I, with 202 pound ARSB lined up at FB to the right of Goff, who is under center. Relatively simple blocking concept in which all the down lineman slide left; the C and LG take out the 4-I RDT, RG pushes the 3-tech LDT inside, RT Penei Sewell shoots the gap to look for a second level defender to clear out, TE Brock Wright - on the right side where the run is planned - blocks down to direct EDGE George Karlaftis (6'4" 263) to his right, passing him off to ARSB, who delivers a crisp block and stands him up, then Wright comes back to clean it up by pushing the off-balance LDE out past the hashmarks. No chance Karlaftis is coming anywhere near David Montgomery.

first down

Not an amazing play but how many teams are asking their 100+ catch a year slot receiver to deliver a kick out block on the EDGE?

This team is built different. Amon-Ra is different. Whatever it takes, man.

The Lions said he had cramping.

They did tape up his shoe, so maybe a toe thing?

The only source I found for turf toe is a site called “draft diamonds” which I’ve never heard of before (and has more ads than an AOL browser)

This is PFN - says cramps

Just found this. He mentions a tweet from Hayden Winks who I follow but I don't see the tweet in his feed:

And this right from the FBG injury roundup today:

Ok, but he went back and played the rest of the game, so…

As I understand it there are degrees of TT, and it’s largely about pain tolerance.

Seems if he went back out and played on it. It’s not anything to worry about?
Hope so. Losing him and Montgomery and possibly Aijuk would be ...problematic.

Winks tweet

Betz tweet of ARSB getting the steel plate put in his cleat & taping his toe

he was in and out after the injury bc of cramps

did not catch any passes after the injury

played 74% of snaps v 94% Week 1

***************

Dan Campbell did not get any questions about ARSB during his presser today, only spoke about James Houston, Hal Vaitai and Montgomery injuries to open

Haven't heard a peep about this turf toe situation. Anyone?

won't know until we check the Wednesday report

The Lions made a flurry of moves today, 4 players to IR, 3 practice squad guys signed to the active roster, brought back G Dan Skipper to practice squad, worked out 7 guys (1 active roster and 2 practice squad slots to be filled.) Ignoring what they say but paying attention to what they do, they moved a G and RB to the active roster. IOW, Monty and RG Hal Vaitai are likely multi-game injuries but not serious enough for IR (min 4 games.)

He'll play through it IMO.

St. Brown won't practice today and is day-to-day. Turf toe.

Dan Campbell said they’ll put a steel plate in the other cleat to balance him out.

How somebody can play with a steel anything in their shoe is beyond me.

Hope he tuffs it out. Need him.

I don't remember him missing games last year?
According to the stats page he didn't miss any games but he had good chunks of ~3 games where he either played very minimally or was just a decoy. I believe he played through an ankle sprain that spanned several games early in the season and also missed a half or 3 quarters of a game due to the Tua Concussion Protocol (he didn't have a concussion)

He missed the Seattle game, 10 snaps v NE, bye week - all while dealing with a HAS. In Dallas he was sent off after 20 snaps bc someone upstairs said he showed signs of being concussed. He didn’t pass the concussion protocol on the sideline. IIRC he cleared the protocols midweek & was pretty mad he got pulled bc he said was never concussed.

Anyway…..over a 4-week span (3 g) he only played 30 snaps.

He got dinged up last year, this is no bueno for the Lions or FF.

They put up 45 v Seattle when he was out. 0 and 6 points in the two games he had limited snaps. Honestly the entire offense is predicated on feeding him targets, but this year they have LaPorta who looks like he’ll be the chain mover if ARSB is out or at 75%.

On his podcast today (recorded yesterday) he told his brother about the cramping & said “everyone could check with Coach Campbell on any other injuries.”

Hey, I finished the game didn’t I? Everything’s Gucci.
He actually said that last part?

Dude is tough as nails and plays through injury but I do remember that crappy injury run he has last year. Hope he stays effective but I can see YPR dipping.

His game is predicated on his quick feet and ability to change direction, hopefully the severity of the toe injury is low. If not, I would expect a drop in production.

I’m hopeful for a couple reasons.

1) Both Amon-Ra on his podcast recorded Tuesday and MCDC in his weekly presser were making light hearted jokes. Maybe means nothing as they both lean toward being glass half full fellas but if it was serous I think we’d see more tells.

2) The Lions medical staff has a lot of subject matter expertise in toe maintenance. Nearly every team has phenomenal resources but Ragnow’s inoperable toe might be something they’ve gleaned insight from. Back in June the Pro Bowl C was really depressed about the prospect of managing pain the entire season. They have him on a regimen of various therapeutic routines and scheduled rest.

Again, may mean nothing. Every injury is unique, Ragnow doesn’t have the exact same injury and vastly different bodies and positional demands. Each player / injury is ICB.

Def share your concerns that this is the worst type of injury for St Brown bc his quick, decisive cuts are fundamental to how he succeeds.

Trending in the right direction, back at practice today after missing Wednesday.

Amon-Ra St. Brown (toe) returned to Lions practice Thursday.
St. Brown will almost certainly be listed as “limited,” but it’s the step in the right direction he needed after sitting out Wednesday’s session. It seems like St. Brown is gearing up to play at less than 100 percent health, perhaps for some time. Since so much of his fantasy value is derived from compiling and stacking up receptions, we would still trust St. Brown as a WR1 against the Falcons even in a diminished state.

Friday media availability

Gonna wear a plate to protect his toe but sounds like he got lucky - toe sprain, not turf toe, should be good to

Fire 'em up, smoke 'em if you got 'em

Justin Rogers

Amon-Ra St. Brown said he's not dealing with turf toe and doesn't expect it to be a season-long issue. He's played with a plate in his shoe during high school and said he feels comfortable with that.

Listed as questionable. Any reason to think he won’t play?

Not from anything that is publicly known.

He’ll have a plate in his cleat, but avoided a serious injury. It is a toe sprain that will be wrapped but he got in two full practices Thi & Fri.

Told reporters Friday he played with a toe plate once or twice at Mater Dei and doesn’t think that will limit him.

Why does this make me nervous??

Because outside of coming home and finding your house has been robbed getting a zero in your fantasy lineup is the worst thing in life. That fear is real. Ha ha

Amon-Ra St. Brown caught 9-of-12 targets for 102 yards in the Lions’ Week 3 win over the Falcons.

St. Brown’s 12 targets were good for an absurd, 36 percent target share. He was one of just four Lions’ to receive a target. St. Brown was playing through a foot injury in this game and will likely continue to do so for a few more weeks, but the issue didn’t slow him in the slightest. He will look to say hot in his Week 4 game against the Packers.

That must be the most comfortable toe plate in shoe history. The thought was he'd be a little gimped and limited, so maybe more targets go to Gibbs/Reynolds. That wasn't close to being the case.

with Jameson back and the # of targets Laporta is getting, is now the time to deal Amon Ra ? Love the kid and his production won't fall off a cliff but I suspect it will be negatively impacted by a decent %.

We need more of this kind of FUD* over the next week while I piece together a trade with the ARSB manager

*fear uncertainty doubt

Amon-Ra is the Sun; everything orbits around him, the entire offense is predicated on his utilization

As a St Brown owner I have zero concern about Williamson. My biggest concern is for the first time since like 1988 the Lions defense looks good.
