Walker will have to improve on his drops and refining his route tree but man athletically, Tez is a freak.

2024 NFL Draft: What We Learned from North Carolina, Washington pro days

Excerpt:

3) Devontez Walker excels deep.
It has been an interesting pre-draft process for North Carolina WR Devontez Walker to this point. The talented pass catcher had an up-and-down Senior Bowl week, but it was followed by a terrific athletic workout at the combine, running a 4.36-second 40-yard dash and opening eyes in both the vertical jump (40.5 inches) and broad jump (11-foot-2).
Walker had a few drops while catching passes from Maye but also hauled in some impressive passes. The rule of thumb on Thursday: the deeper the pass, the better Walker seemed to look.
"Definitely speed," Walker said when asked what his superpower was. "Being able to win vertically, throw it over any defense -- I take pride in that. I feel like I can win a foot race with anybody, so I try to make everything a foot race."
In a way, it encapsulated a lot of what Walker displayed on the field in parts of his three college seasons, first with Kent State and later -- after a few hang-ups over his eligibility -- with UNC. Walker, though, admitted he was pleased with the work he put in on Thursday.
"I feel like I did real well," Walker said. "I was able to showcase a lot of things. A lot of scouts probably had questions about route running, catching the ball naturally, things like that. I feel good about my performance out there today."
But Walker also knows he's not yet a finished product.
"Definitely a lot of things to work on," he said. "Top of the route is the biggest thing I wanted to go into the offseason and put an emphasis on, and that's what I've been doing."

Great pick. Dude is a 2nd rounder most years IMO, but got caught in a deep draft shuffle this year. Of course, Baltimore swoops. Good for them. Great for Lamar.

The new Rashid Bateman roster clogger.
Nah, Rashod Bateman’s a roster clogger because of his first round pedigree. This is more akin to when the Ravens took Tylan Wallace in the 4th round in that same draft. Have to think Walker is D.O.A. with this landing spot, at least from a fantasy perspective.

#Ravens GM Eric DeCosta on what rookie Devontez Walker brings to the WR room:

“Just an explosive guy. I think with us, one of the things that we’ve been missing a little bit is that big, linear, outside, field-stretcher type of guy…

“Having a guy like a Torrey Smith was for us, who can just run past people, catch the ball on vertical routes, draw pass interference penalties, force teams to play two-deep Cover 2-type coverages against us — I think it’s gonna really help us. He’s a guy who can go get the ball.”

DeCosta also noted that Baltimore was considering a big-bodied outside receiver at the end of the first round and that Lamar Jackson was keen on drafting that type of wideout

Entering Day 3, the Ravens had WR Tez Walker and CB T.J. Tampa among the handful of players they were hoping to get with their two picks the 4th round.

"We were blessed to get them," Ravens GM Eric DeCosta said. "I never thought Tez would've been there in the fourth round."

Ravens GM Eric DeCosta on comparing 4th-round WR Tez Walker to Torrey Smith: "[Smith] made big plays when they counted. You could count on him. He's a glue guy and I just think Tez has a lot of the same qualities."

Yep. Tez could be the WR steal of the draft. He's got some work to do, and he had an uneven college career with a lot of things not going his way.

But dude can break away and track down the deep ball. Some coaching/seasoning and he will be a stud.

Who among current or recent players would you compare him to?

“Devontez Walker had a false start penalty in the situational drills but bounced back with a nice sliding catch on a comeback route on the very next play to help set up a field goal. Todd Monken said Walker is a ‘quick learner’ and that he's been impressed with Walker's ability to play multiple spots, execute technique, and pick up the nuances of route running to adjust with coverage.”

On Tez Walker: “You can see his inspiration thus far, as he’s making plays in practice that are turning the heads of the coaching staff. On Friday, he had a highlight reel grab that was considered the day’s best play.”

Stock Down: “Devontez Walker, Walker played just six offensive snaps against the Falcons, and Harbaugh said afterward he’s still dealing with a rib injury. It continues what’s been a difficult training camp for the fourth-round rookie. He hasn’t had too many moments in practice, he’s had precious few opportunities in games, and he’s battled physical issues. It seems highly unlikely the Ravens would cut a rookie fourth-round pick. However, Walker is running out of time to prove he warrants a game day role for the Ravens early in the season.”
