WR DK Metcalf, PIT (2 Viewers)

Dude is not getting the volume I thought he would.

Their TOP is bottom 5 in the NFL (26th or 27th yesterday, IIRC. Not sure what the Pats game did, if anything, to move them up or down), and their total offense per game likely isn't a whole lot better (didn't check to be sure, but it certainly wouldn't shock me if it's bottom 5).

Their defense is averaging nearly 400 yards of offense allowed per game, which has also allowed their Opponents TOP to be "top" 5 in the NFL. That's a bad combination

TL;DR: The Steelers offense isn't possessing the ball anywhere near long enough for anyone to get volume.

Just a fun guy to watch when he gets the ball and does DK things. Always inconsistent game to game, but so satisfying when he gives you these games and plays.

Not many more wide receivers in the NFL finish that touchdown by blasting through the safety.

This game sums up Metcalf this year. Huge first half. Best of his career. 1 catch the second half. Still just 5 targets. Still doesn’t give anyone huge confidence going forward.

He wasn’t started by league members this week in two of my higher stakes leagues. Granted their other options do look better on paper.

Metcalf’s targets on the year:

7, 6, 4, 5, 9, 5

That’s not #1 receiver usage, that’s Rashid Shaheed-like.

While Metcalf has never been a huge target earner going back to Seattle, the fact that there is no viable #2 WR alongside him is a bit concerning that he’s not separating/earning targets.

Here is a graph from before last night that shows his lack of separation ability versus the rest of the league’s WRs:

I hate how Pitts uses DK. They don’t scheme him touches. It’s just go out wide and get a fade.
I really thought he would thrive with Rodgers this year. Boy was I wrong.
It’s Arthur Smith’s system. Look at what Pickens is doing in Dallas?
Idk how he keeps getting jobs.
Because nfl teams don't care about fantasy. He's a solid OC for real life football.

Plus teams don’t want to lose their FedEx shipments if they diss Arthur.

Smith was an excellent hire and he's a very good OC who called a really good game.

And whoever started this off by saying they don't scheme touches for DK is wrong. He had a bad statistical game but entered the week as WR12 in PPR PPG and only feel down to WR14 and his production is not because he's been running a bunch of fades.

I feel like I was the lone Steeler fan who was vocal that the Steelers did not improve their WR situation swapping out Pickens for DK, that they only gave up more draft capital and a whole lot more money to get older. So I was not a fan of the trade and still am not. But DK's been solid for fantasy and worth every bit of what he cost in redraft.

I hate the long quote trees of this site so I'll just say @menobrown that I was one of the people who originally said they don't scheme touches to DK. Last night I saw Cincy literally do whatever it took to get the ball in their best players hands. Chase was running every route imaginable and getting manufactured touches. He was attacking all 3 levels of the D and was seeing screens too.

Then I saw DK lined up out wide 95% of the time, running a very limited route tree and was essentially a decoy. I believe I saw DK catch one screen last night whereas the likes of Darnell freaking Washington was getting 3+.

Sure the Steelers O was humming but they ultimately lost the game and their alpha WR1 ended the game with 5 targets and 50 yards. That is not good enough.

It's one game. If you watched other Steeler's games you'd see they use Metcalf in other ways, including on slants.

What you should take into consideration IMO is DK is not Chase, and the Steelers did nothing to adjust to take him away but you might have noticed a lot of coverage on DK. It's really as simple as that.

It's hard to compare DK to Chase though; maybe not the grand canyon, but we are talking a wide gap in talent and abilities between the two of them. I don't think if we swapped the two that DK would be doing what Chase is. Nor would Cincy be scheming for him like they are Chase IMO.

And then there's an obvious difference in QB. Rodgers has never exactly been one to stare down and throw to one guy an entire night regardless of scheme and coverage. Meanwhile Flacco made like 30% of the Ravens total offense while he was there via DPI by doing just that. He looked like crap during the first two quarters of the GB game. Then in the second half he realized he's not in Cleveland anymore and that the Bengals have arguably the best WR in football. So he is literally playing Madden and smashing the "pass to Chase" button on every play. While fantasy owners around the world can rejoice; I'd bet the bank their gameplan wasn't to target Chase 23 times every game coming into the season. It also won't work (at least not to get them wins IRL) just smashing the Chase button every single play every week the ROS.

Agree with Meno the Steelers did terrible adjusting in-game and basically didn't do anything to try to take Chase away. And I also alluded to this in the Chase Brown thread on Friday, but AFC North divisional games may as well be looked at outside of all other evidence garnered via any other in-season games. I swear almost every single one good teams play bad, bad teams play good, things that always worked previously are suddenly broke, and the broken things are magically restored to better than new condition lol. It's asinine. 100% this team should be better moving forward with Flacco than they were with Browning. And all the Chase/Brown/Higgins shareholders should be optimistic, brighter days are ahead. But I would pause before considering this week against the Steelers the new benchmark moving forward.

Similarly, DK should bounce back to the low end WR1/high end WR2 numbers he's been putting up the first few weeks.

Most every wr has down weeks. There is a reason Chase was the #1 overall player. I'm trying to stay level headed on DK. They started to open up the deep passing a little more the past couple games. Let's remember DK had a catch and caused that interception. That would have been another catch and another 12 yards. Not to mention it would have extended the drive. Rodgers also threw a horrendous interception trying to hit DK deep.

Steelers are likely to be in more shoot outs than we expected with how awful their secondary is. That defense had a very easy early season schedule. Games against the Packers, Colts, Chargers, Ravens (x2), Bengals, Bears, Lions and Bills still remain.
