WR Jordan Whittington, LAR (1 Viewer)

Sarah Barshop
Sean McVay called Jordan Whittington a “mature rookie” after the sixth-round pick had six catches for 74 yards.

"He played like a grown man with the ball in his hands [and] did a great job without it," McVay said. "I just really like him. He's going to be a factor for us."

The Coachspeak Index
#Rams OC Mike LaFleur on Jordan Whittington:

“We felt pretty confident that when the pads got on and there was real football, he was gonna even be a bigger problem and I think that showed. He’s got a long way to go. He’s a kid that’s really confident and the teammates are pretty confident in him as well.”

LaFleur saying they'll have to have conversations about whether Whittington will continue to play in preseason games is very interesting, given the fact that the Rams don't like to play their key players in the preseason

Literally know nothing about this guy, other than he's been making plays all camp and McVay seems to love him. Just took him #3 overall in my dynasty's Free Agent Draft. Hoping for a winning lotto ticket of the future here.

“Jordan Whittington may be utilized in a variety of ways by the Rams as the season progresses, perhaps even giving them position flexibility at running back on sweeps and stretch plays”

@32BeatWriters
"Jordan Whittington. The rookie receiver was my sleeper way back in the spring, and will clearly factor into the offense in some way this season (though isn’t a lead target). Whittington was a former running back whose catch-and-run ability is more fullback-like, if a fullback was also pretty dang fast."

Had a TD on a jet sweep (or something that looked like one, wasn’t watching closely) in the red zone called back due to one of the linemen facemasking fwiw

LAR WR ROOM OPTIONS REMAINING

Demarcus Robinson
KC 2019 KC 4th round pick
Never shined
6 of 11 targets for 91 yards 🙁
IMO He has been around for a while as “depth” not a starter

Tutu Atewell
2021 LAR 2nd Round pick
Undersized but showed well pre draft
5’9” 165 lb
3 of 4 for 48 all week 2
IMO he does not have the “juke move” skill set needed for his size/speed

Tyler Johnson
2020 TB 5th round pick
7 of 10 for 99
Not sure his chemistry with Stafford
Looks like a “WTH Flyer”

Jordan Whittton
Late 6th Round Rookie
2 of 2 for 22
Still a ways to go but he could pass DemR by week 7-8

Only one of their remaining WRs that has looked special. Tyler Johnson had that YAC run last week but that's it. JWhitt has jumped off the screen whenever he gets the ball.

My bet is JWhitt is the only WR with any level on consistency until either Kupp or Puka are back. And even then, I think he probably maintains some level of value even then.

The limited tape I've seen I thought he was impressive and he had puka vibes and was a consistent dude I took in one of the last 3 rounds of Best Ball

Can he adapt and can the line hold up are serious questions but I am going to lean to the guy we don't know versus what we've seen proven to be limited ceilings in Tutu, Tyler and Robinson

Starting him at WR3/Flex spots this week. Played every single offensive snap of the 2nd half last game. Buying the hype from the summer.

I have Tyler on my bench... Not too impressed. Would anyone straight swap him for Whittington on the wire or is it too soon?

I like what whitington did in camp but I'm not a huge camp hype guy - I just don't see Tyler doing anythng special

I don't see it with Johnson. I would want Robinson for the short-term and Whittington for the long-term. I dropped Johnson and kept Whittington to pickup an RB off waivers.

I'm also thinking of starting Whitt this week as well. I think McVay catches people by surprise with him this week.

He's jumped to my second most owned redraft WR in the last two weeks and am sitting on him in 10 such leagues. He won't be in every lineup, but he'll be in a few of them.

I got some Robinson and Johnson on teams and I would rank them:

Whittington
Robinson

Johnson

Robinson's role is pretty much his role. His snaps, position(X) does not change with the Puka or Kupp injuries. Obviously there is a way more pie for him to get with those two out but reason I prefer Whittington, other then him not leaving the field as you pointed out, is that his running after the catch is arguably his greatest asset. With this beat up OL that seems like a forumla for McVay to draw up more quick passes to Whittington to not get Stafford beat up.

Johnson's the riskiest of the group this week IMO because there is a chance they need some juice with Tutu and if so I think it will come primarily from his snaps. I do have to start Johnson in a place or two so won't mind being wrong but he's for sure what I view as the third best option.

Part of me believes he truly enjoys this part

This.
The main reason Whittington is on my roster is because McVay wants to show what a draft genius he is.
His team is ravaged by injuries so it's possible he wants to create a hype story.
Plus we know he isn't afraid to throw rookie WRs into a 90% snap share (Puka 2023).

He very well could be nothing, but of the guys left if someone’s gonna become a long term asset it’s clearly him. Def the priority pickup of the 4 unless you’re gonna start them the next couple weeks

Would love to be able to stash him but with all the injuries and no IR slots, I have no one I can drop.

I would love to see him startable, but trusting Robinson this week... we'll see how he performs and go from there... so definitely feeling good about the stash.

Thing thing about DR is he's a better 2 or 3 than a 1, but he will still draw #1 coverage. Whittington fits the bill to run a lot of the underneath and sideline stuff Puka excels at. He's also low key beastly with the ball in his hands. Robinson and Johnson should help spread the field, and San Francisco's weak spot has to be considered their corners. We all know about their D-Line and pass rush, meaning Stafford will need to get the ball out quickly to stay alive. Whittington is stepping into big shoes, but I believe he'll lead the Rams in receiving this week, whatever that means after their implosion last week. Just a theory. 🤷‍♂️

As of right now, I have him in my lineup over DJ Moore....love DJ, but I do not trust that offense at all, especially on the road

Have any of the Rams OL returned? If not I'm completely out on this offense until Kupp returns or the OL is healthy. They are paper thin in pass protection.

I tend to agree. There's a lot of optimism in this thread. I like Whittington too but I wouldn't be surprised by a total dud either. I'm only starting him because all my other options are bad, underperforming, or both. Just hoping the Rams come out to battle after laying down and completely rolling over last week.

McVay is in jeopardy of starting 0-3 and staying in the NFC West dweller the entire season. He claims he is a better coach than Shanahan and has a ring to prove it.

If you are McVay how do you beat the Niners at home on Sunday?

Not sure its possible, but my guess would be to try to surprise the Niners and go with an ultra run heavy approach with a high dosage of Williams mixed with Corum.

Which would mean bad things for Whittington's potential.

At the same time, that method will probably only work if they commit to it AND are successful, which I have my doubts, leading to them probably being down by a lot and still being forced into passing situations for a good chunk of the game.

Still - I'm starting him in a few spots this week.

When did McVay say he is a better coach than Shannahan?

Yes, at minimum Alaric Jackson is back but I said upthread and will again that the banged up OL might be an assist to Whittingon who should excel in the shorter passing game with his strong YAC ability.

But agree some strong optimism because frankly I don't know McVay's game plan and no coach seems to pull surprises for players he puts in feature roles. I own Whittingon on 10 teams, a few of those Kupp teams, my guess is he'll see my lineup in 2-3 of those 10 leagues where I've been ripped with injuries but I'd rather see how things look before taking the plunge.
