WR Malik Nabers, NYG (1 Viewer)

Art Stapleton
The more I watch Malik Nabers, the more I keep having flashbacks to pre-injury Odell Beckham Jr.
Not the body type, per se, but the hands, the fluidity, the ease with which he runs. Also, Nabers strikes me as a more instinctive route runner than OBJ was early in his NYG days.

Malik Nabers preseason breakdown:

31.6% - Target share when on the field
43.7% - Air yardage share when on the field

13.3 - Average depth of target

(Data per @TruMediaSports)

Nabers has been used as the pre-snap motion man five times and targeted on two of those five routes.

He worked primarily from the slot at LSU but has been out wide on 82.1% of his routes. You can watch all of them here:

all-22 Malik Nabers vs Houston

Not a lot to go off. He catches a nice jump ball at one point, after he missed one earlier. Mostly he's doing crossers. The DBs are often jumping his routes, but I'm not sure what that would mean for Nabers. Does he signal his route somehow? Idk. I do know the Texans have a couple great CBs tho.

His best play in my opinion was the last one in the clip where he eats it to avoid the OPI on a pick play.

“Nabers might even better than advertised. He has dominated throughout camp and appears destined to be the Giants' No. 1 receiver. Not even an ankle sprain can slow him -- he was back less than a week after injury and had four catches on six targets for 54 yards in one half of a preseason game against the Texans. "Sky's the limit," fellow receiver Wan'Dale Robinson said. A monster rookie season seems plausible given the way he has thrived this summer.”

Nabers is going to get absolutely peppered

““On [Daboll’s] call sheet, on the back side, he has a section with a player’s name and under that certain plays that they’re likely to be targeted on,” Barkley said. “So he knew how to orchestrate that. If a guy is hot, let’s go with him, which was kind of cool to see. I had never seen that on a call sheet.””

If Drew Lock becomes the starting QB, you guys think he will Lock onto Nabers?

Not a horrible first game, but needs a better QB like we all have known. I am not devaluing him one bit and still think he will get 100 catches this year.

Well, Daboll said Jones is starting week 2.

Is he trying to commit a death-by-cop style career suicide? When will he have seen enough?

Who should he replace him with? Drew Lock? Lock has a career completion percentage under 60% and a career passer rating under 80. Tommy DeVito? Jones is getting $36 million this year . . . I expect Jones will have a pretty long leash.

I think the team wants to lose this year. Probably already know what they have in Jones and they're going to give him enough leash to hang himself. They'll take a QB with their first pick next year.

Staff will be gone then.

Tried moving him for Jordan Mason in redraft and the guy declined.

What a goof!! He can have fun starting AJ Brown, Christian Kirk, Brandin Cooks, and Christian Watson as his WR.

I will be shocked if he doesn't have a HUGE day. These defenses are AWFUL, and for whatever reason, Daniel Jones only plays well against Washington. I'm expected over 100 yards and 1-2 TDs.

The Commanders are a historically bad d, and yet the Giants just took another demoralizing loss. At the end of the game, Nabers was pouting on the bench.

I hate to say it, but is selling high the best path?

He dropped one that would have gone for a 1st and kept the drive alive. Instead Wash got the ball and drove down for the winning FG. It was known all along he has no QB, so there will be downs with the ups.

maybe pouting as he dropped an easy catch while going out of bounds right near the end of the game

Next Gen Stats
In his second career NFL game, rookie Malik Nabers was targeted 18 times across 26 routes, a 69.2% target rate, the highest target rate by any receiver who ran at least 15 routes in a game in the NGS era (since 2016).

Nabers was most effective on in-breaking routes, hauling in 6 of 7 targets for 98 yards and a touchdown. Nabers ran only two out-breaking routes all game.

Receptions by Route: Cross (4), Hitch (4), Slant (2), All Others (0)

Malik Nabers in two games:

20.2 fantasy points per game
90% route participation
39% target share
56% air yard share

That is an ALPHA, y'all.

Jones will be an issue at times but hard to keep Nabers out of WR1 territory with these numbers. Worst case feels like high-end WR2.

You're right about that. He took it hard. But the demoralized body language is concerning anyway. I won't sell because my league mates won't pay, but damn this feels like a great moment to sell given how deep in the pit this team really is.

"I'm disappointed, I mean no matter how good of a game you can play that last play came down to me. I'm hurt that I let those veterans down....just letting those guys down. I don't ever want to let my team down. That's the main motto in my head don't let the team down. I let the team down."

I think you may be reaching for this demoralized body language time to sell idea. Just my opinion.

Going to be a monster

Kid is ultra-competitive and holds himself to a high standard from the sound of it. He knows that is a play that he can make in most cases and unfortunately it was the play that ended his chances. I see him coming back stronger from this, not the opposite. He should be happy they lost, they will need a high pick to find a new single caller next year.

It's certainly not the headline, I agree. The headline is this team can't even put up a lot of points against the world's worst defense. Would it surprise anyone if this is his best game of the season?

He will most likely see double digit targets all year so although it is possible he will still probably cleanup in garbage time.

It would surprise me.

This Giants team feels like it could be trailing, and thus throwing, a lot this season.

Although that is true, who do they have getting him the ball? Is it a Blake Bortles/Jameis type who just keeps slinging it under losing conditions and scoring? Or is it a skittish, terrified, herky jerky tool whose bug-eyed stare will be sticking out the side of his ear hole on one 3-and-out or turnover after another?

I'll stop now because no one seems to agree with me, I won't be selling because my league mates seldom want to pay fair prices, and I really really hope I'm wrong because I got 3 shares and I want this to work

Hmm maybe I need to activate and start this guy off my taxi squad. Too bad both those teams are loaded in talent.
