WR Malik Washington, MIA (1 Viewer)

Kinda slow for this offense (4.47 40 time :P), but 42.5" vertical should make up for that. Miami has been looking for a wr3 this offseason so this guy may be a Hill/Waddle injury from a lot of opportunity. But there is still a decent chance Miami signs OBJ for a year to block him as a rookie.

He had the biggest fall IMO over where I expected him to go then any player in the draft. Smart guy, love his tape, great metrics and workout numbers. Thought he was a third rounder.

During the draft call with Malik Washington, Grier said McDaniel had been bugging him to draft Malik for multiple rounds. My guess is when they took Mo Kamara, Mike was banging the table for Malik but Kamara was such good value they couldn’t pass him up🤷🏻‍♂️

Mike also says “Your rookie year can be very productive if you’re a pro, which I know you can be immediately because you’re going to have the opportunity.” Sounds like he’s already got a real role envisioned for Malik👀

Why did he slide in your opinion?
His 4 years at Northwestern don't look a thing like what he did 1 season at Virginia after entering the transfer portal
-My take is Malik knows/knew he was a lot better than how he was being used at Northwestern
These transfer portal shockers are fairly new and more kids than ever are leaving one program so they can get an opp to shine at another.

Berrios and Cracraft are pretty decent 3/4 WRs on any NFL team but I feel they can be leap frogged as a 3rd option on pass plays.

Good question. The 10 experts in Draftbuzz had him going 60 to 103, with a median of 93, late 3rd. The draft was very deep at WR. Franklin, Baker, and Walker were picked in the 4th round. Small, faster, less accomplished WRs went in the 5th, Gould, Cowing, maybe teams looking for return guys. Check out the video analysis below. Malik has good contact balance, good route running, good ball tracking, great hands. I think he has a good chance to be the starting slot WR, think of Sherfield's numbers from 2 years ago, maybe 30 receptions, 400 yards. He's only 5'8&1/2" but 191 lbs, he breaks tackles, including one by Payton Wilson in the video below. He takes advantage of his 42.5" vertical. He's not a gadget player.

Bad QBs at NW, failed to realize his potential. Then better, but still mediocre QBs at Virginia, where he had the 2nd highest PFF receiving grade behind the other Malik.

We need to invite that kid who does all those videos we both linked into this thread and the Shark Pool

Yes. Ryder McConville. Checkout his linkedin below. From Cali, now in Tennessee. A young guy, late 20s. He's trying to make it as a college scout, I think the Dolphin stuff is for fun. I saw his videos last year of Dolphin preseason, where he showed why Miami fell in love with TE Hill as a blocker. And he explained why Achane was a great pick for Miami based on his college videos.

Shades of the Achane pick last year...

After the OBJ signing, his value goes down. Maybe a good end of the draft WR in redraft. I think he gives OBJ a run for his $5 mil in incentives. That money would count toward the 2025 cap if OBJ earns it.

He got lit up on a 20 yard slant which he dropped, leaving him on the field for a few minutes. But he came back into the game with 40 yard end around, 28 yard punt return, and 45 yard kickoff return. He's compact, has vision, and is hard to bring down. I think he's better than Berrios right now, and could see action early in the season with OBJ possibly out and CraCraft out.

The Coachspeak Index
#Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel on what he liked about Malik Washington’s performance:

“Aggressiveness. He played as though the game was slow to him, it slowed down… We hadn’t gotten the chance to see something that we saw in college from him, that he put on display tonight, which is his balance and his ability to break tackles and get edges on defenders.”

Only Malik Nabers had a higher PFF receiving grade than Miami Dolphins rookie WR Malik Washington in 2023.

You can watch every opportunity that Mike McDaniel schemed up for the sixth-round pick here:

Love this note on Malik Washington.

Notably, Jaylen Waddle had already missed 3 weeks of practice with an unknown injury, and Tyreek Hill has an injured right thumb (ligament damage? Jammed it?).
Odell Beckham Jr has been out since June.

Malik had a slow start to camp and preseason, but started showing why he was rated as a 3rd-4th round draft pick, although he fell to the 6th due to his size, only 5'8", but 192 lbs. He's best as a slot receiver. His skills overlap Berrios, he might be better already than Berrios on kick returns, end arounds, and screens. 4.47 forty and 42.5" vertical! He breaks alot of tackles.

It was a deep WR room with depth provided by Cracraft, Ezukanma, Taj Washingon, and OBJ, but now might need some cast off vets for a few games. Move Jonnu up a few slots.

It appears that Waddle and Hill are a go for week 1, the 3rd WR position is up in the air.

They should release Braxton Berrios and let Malik handle returns to start off until he can make an impact receiving

With all the injuries at WR, I doubt if Berrios will be released. If CraCraft and Ezukanma were healthy, it could be a consideration. Cracraft will miss considerable time with an upper body injury. Ezukanma was in a walking boot on Friday. Taj Washington looked good in camp but is on season-ending IR, still an undisclosed injury AFAIK, the secrecy! Waddle is supposedly a go for game 1, hopefully. Hill with a thumb injury. OBJ with a mystery injury, being compared on twitter to Will Fuller who got $10,000,000 for 4 catches.

Some say the Dolphins are cursed since the stadium was built on an ancient burial site. Urban Legend?
