xbox one vs ps4 (2 Viewers)

The only reason to buy one or the other is the game exclusives really. When you really look at the specs it is too close to call and each has it's area where it is incrementally better than the other. So buy the one that will play the games you want that you can't get on the other.
/thread
Actually, that's not the only reason to buy one or the other. If you like to play games online and all or most of your friends have one console, you'll almost always be better off buying that console even if you miss out on a few exclusives.
I'm confused by the specs. Some places say that PS4 has a leg up on X-box as far as graphics, RAM and cost. Other places Ive seen said X-box can only broadcast in 720 or 900p (or was it 910?) and that Playstation was better with that as well. Than places say that the Playstation is a "gamers" console and x-box isnt

Honestly, I dont have a clue what half the stuff I typed above even means....

Yeah I don't play online so I don't care what anyone else owns. I was addressing the question on an individual basis but certainly if you do play online and most or all of your friends have one or the other then buy that one I guess.

The PS4 on paper has slightly better specs mainly GPU & memory. Xbox has a slightly faster CPU. Both can do full 1080p, it's up to developers to set the native resolution in games. I know the Xbox will upscale everying to 1080p regardless of native resolution. I assume the same is on the PS4 (upscaling).

Side note: Higher resolution does not mean better graphics. Don't get too caught up in resolution. 1080p works well with some games, depending on the situation. In others, not so well as they need to sacrifice fps or image quality so many games will go 720p or 900p but be very, very nice looking - in fact better looking than they would if they tried to go to 1080p.

Both are gamer's consoles. Xbox Live historically has been years ahead of PS+ but I can see that narrowing or evening up this go-around. They both have added capabilities in twitch, game recording and some other stuff. The Xbox also has Skype and comes with the Kinect. The Xbox is also $100 more. Hope that helps.

If the HDMI passthru feature works well I'll jump to the 1. Otherwise I'll just keep the 360 until you can buy both of them for the price of one today. That's basically what I did the last go round. It took about a year for the console prices to really fall off.

Last gen started at considerably higher prices than this generation. While some price decrease likely will happen, I would not expect anywhere near the % decreases that occurred previously

I pre-ordered both consoles since I couldn't decide at the time, and now I think I'm going to cancel both. Let me know if any FBG's are having trouble getting a pre-order and we can figure something out (not looking to make any money). Otherwise I'll just cancel soon.

Really? I thought 360 started at roughly 499, no? I forget what PS3 launched with.

Take inflation into consideration, this is an inexpensive set of launch consoles. Cool link below. The Intellivision would have been $849 in today's dollard. Dayum!

Seems to be the trend. System sellers not released until months after launch.

Yeah. The notable launch titles last round were Call of Duty 2, Need For Speed: Most Wanted and Resistance: Fall of Man. Perfect Dark Zero was supposed to be Xbox 360's big hit out of the gate, but that game flopped like it was trying out for a Duke center.

So...when platform-specific software and "gaming evolution" and ambigously defined "improved graphics" are cited ad reasons to buy, its a sure sign the consumer is getting hosed. Consoles have killed gaming. I miss half-life, controlled with a mouse and a keypad. I played a little gta5 on console recently and you just cant get immersed in a game with a console controller unless its madden.

I completely understand that PCs are technically superior to consoles, but I'm happy with my console nonetheless. It's comparatively cheap and hassle-free, and I like sitting on my couch with a controller in my hand.

I've said this before in other threads but I think I'm the model customer for a Steambox. I'm envious of what PC gamers get to do. I just need it made easy.

The idea of having to do $500 in upgrades to my computer every 6 months to keep up with current games has absolutely ZERO appeal to me. And I'm concerned that Steamboxes are still going to follow that model. If that's the case, I'll be sticking with console gaming for the foreseeable future. As far as controllers are concerned, I'll take the controller over the mouse and keyboard every time.

I agree on constant upgrading too. But I would be okay with $500 every 3-4 years as opposed to current console cycles of I get the inherent PC advantages like mods, higher player counts, better gfx, etc. That's just me. I have a PS4 preordered so it's not like I'm ditching consoles.

I spent around $800 to build a kickass machine 2 years ago that still will outperform what these nextgen consoles can do. I'll likely have to upgrade the video card in the next year but that will probably keep me going for another 2+ years for $300 or so.

Exactly what pushed me to console and I loved playing on my PC.

I used to enjoy PC gaming way back in the Half Life days. Then the tech just got out of control. That, and I just can't sit there hunched over a keyboard/mouse for hours. I'm in that position enough during the day at my job. That's where the console suits me in that I can lay on my couch gaming for hours with no ergonomic issues at all.

That said, I've got the Xbox One on preorder. No games though as I'm going all digital this generation for these reasons:

1. I can log into any Xbox One and play any of the games I own.

2. No more disc cases everywhere. Or scratching discs.

3. They'll bring back family sharing at some point where you can loan out games to people digitally.

4. There will be the ability to trade in digital games for credit toward purchase of other digital games.

5. I hate swapping discs. Yeah, I know. I'm lazy.

6. Maybe someday we'll get Steam-esque sales on digital titles.

Same. I don't want to come home and sit in a chair in front of a PC after doing the same all day.

If you buy the right parts when you first build a pc, you can go years without upgrades. My current system is over 2 years old and can run any game fine.

I upgraded my video card for bf4 because I'm a graphics whore, but it wasn't at all necessary.

Pc gaming is certainly more expensive if you want cutting edge hardware, but typically medium graphics settings (which are probably still better than what we'll get with next gen consoles) are easily done by upgrading key parts every few years

Yep, and from the sounds of it Microsoft is trying to do exactly the same thing. Which is a huge plus in my book. Since, as others have also said, I'm kind of jealous of PC gamers and Steam.

The hardware advantage is a moot point. All the games will be only as good as the weaker of the two.
The rumor of the week is that COD will be running natively at 1080p on the PS4 and 720p on Xbox. Sony has confirmed the 1080p-on-PS part, and Microsoft and Activision have put up a cone of silence with regards to Xbox, which doesn't exactly bode well.

Granted, this is in the rumor stage and it's just one game. But it's a huge game and it's not exactly a franchise that it is known for high-end graphics. I think it's more likely than not that the Xbox may be looking at inferior versions of multiplatform titles for the entire gen. Something to keep in mind if anybody is really on fence between the two.

You do know that higher resolution does not equal better looking right? Hell, Ryse was thought to be native 1080p for months, and then Crytek said it was actually 900p native upscaled to 1080p. And of course Ryse is hands down the best looking game at launch for either console. There are many examples of Ryse in 1080p native vs 900p native and the 900p shots are sooooo much better looking. Better textures, backgrounds, etc.

So don't buy into the 1080p native hype, it's not necessarily a plus.

Of course. Sometimes it makes sense to sacrifice resolution in order to get higher fps, better textures, better lighting, etc. But that's not what's happening here. We're talking (potentially) about the same game not being able to hit the same resolution on one console as the other. That's a very big deal if true, because it would indicate that the power discrepancy between the two machines is probably even larger than what people had thought.

Then again, even processing power isn't everything. I people want to go with a "weaker" console because it keeps them better-connected with their friends or because they prefer its game library, that's completely understandable and reasonable. This is just one factor in the mix, and there's no special reason why it should necessarily be a deal-breaker depending on a person's preferences in other areas.

I'd argue again that the PS3 was the far more powerful system last time. Sony can make a system that recreate the holodeck on the USS Star Ship Enterprise, but if the online gaming and user interface sucks then they will fall behind. They don't have the Blu-Ray player angle to lean on this time.

I agree. I was fine with PSN when it was free, but now that they're charging for it they absolutely need to up their game in this area.

I pre-ordered both consoles since I couldn't decide at the time, and now I think I'm going to cancel both. Let me know if any FBG's are having trouble getting a pre-order and we can figure something out (not looking to make any money). Otherwise I'll just cancel soon.
Note that both consoles are sold out now. There may be some $ to be had in reselling. Particularly for the PS4, since it seemed to have less presales and sold out very quickly.

Yeah, I've thought about it. Don't know if I want to take much risk for what is likely a small profit though.

People made a few hundred bucks launch week for in-hand consoles last time. Just keep an eye on supply. If they look short out to a month then go for it.

I'm going from Xbox360 to PS4 because of one big reason, and that's backward compatability, or more specficially the lack thereof.

I have a ton of games that I bought on Live Arcade. These games will not port to XBox One.

So rather than buying all of them again, I went with the PS4 so that I can buy games that I never had access to from Playstation Network, and still play what I have on Live Arcade with my old 360. Not to mention the backlog of 360 games that I will still have, allowing me to be selective with what I buy for PS4.

I'm expanding my horizons, and Microsoft helped make my decision. I'm not sure if that's what they wanted, but that was the deciding factor.

It may have been the superior system last time, but the cell architecture made it brutal to program for as noted in the snippet below. Notice though Sony exclusives were much nicer looking at the end of the cycle. I currently have an xbox but going ps4 this time for the record.

This time Microsoft's Es ram is making it more difficult to program for. http://hothardware.com/News/Developers-Claim-Xbox-One-Much-Weaker-Than-PS4-We-Evaluate-The-Evidence/ Below is a snippet from the article. I have also read a developer making this same statement but I would have to look to find it.

----------------------------------

Despite Microsoft's attempts to claim otherwise, the 32MB of ESRAM cache is not a substitute for a high-speed memory bus and its performance cannot be estimated by adding the 68GB/s bandwidth of the SoC's DDR3 + the ESRAM cache bandwidth itself. This doesn't mean the cache can't be used to substantial benefit. Developers, however, are likely to prefer simple solutions to complex ones. That puts more pressure on Microsoft to create tools that make leveraging the Xbox One's features as easy as possible.

It's not surprising to hear that the Xbox One's cache is esoteric and difficult to use -- but it's probably not as difficult to leverage as Cell was. Having dug into Cell on multiple occasions, the chip was truly a pain to program effectively. The performance benefit of the ESRAM cache, whatever it ends up being, will almost certainly be easier to extract than Cell's full power ever was.

------------------------------

I agree Sony needs to step up their game since they are charging for online, but this go round they have easier architecture and better CPU/GPU RAM combo. So to state better resolution doesnt = better game, thats true, but if its easier to program, cheaper and runs games in native 1080 at 60fps without upscaling and Xbox1 cant by the end of the cycle Sony should be far ahead of Microsoft.

You cant pry my Xbox 360 out of my hands, but in my opinion PS is going to win this round.

I would be interested in the ps4 if you aren't planning on reselling it for profit.

Really? I thought 360 started at roughly 499, no? I forget what PS3 launched with.
Take inflation into consideration, this is an inexpensive set of launch consoles. Cool link below. The Intellivision would have been $849 in today's dollard. Dayum!

My 2 brothers and I all chipped in for Intellivision in 79 or 80. I loved that console. The $300 was a lot of coin. I dont know how we got the money.

Tarzan was my favorite game. I literally would play for hours and hours, beating [the game] over and over.

I dont remember Tarzan on Intellivision, but we mostly played Baseball and Football which were both way ahead of their time.

What is the risk factor in reselling?

God I loved Intellivision football. I can't even count how many hours I killed on that at a friends house.

It is impressive what the programmers were able to create on so little hardware respurces. These were the Intellivision hardware specs

General Instrument CP1610 16-bit microprocessor CPU running at 894.886 kHz (i.e., slightly less than 1 MHz)

1456 bytes of RAM:

240 × 8-bit Scratchpad Memory

352 × 16-bit (704 bytes) System Memory

512 × 8-bit Graphics RAM

7168 bytes of ROM:

4096 × 10-bit (5120 bytes) Executive ROM

2048 × 8-bit Graphics ROM

games are games to me so I'm going for the console without Kinect. bonus that it's a hundred bucks cheaper. I guess it's good to read the ps4 has more horsepower but I don't think I'd notice any difference.

I used to play football with my brothers and dad. It was cool creating plays by using different number sequences from the controller. It was our favorite game until we figured out how to run an unstoppable offense. Send a WR to the bottom of the screen and run the QB to the top. when your opponnent chooses where to go, do the opposite. THat option play caused fights.

 Yeah, maybe a little.

Apparently Battlefield 4 also runs natively at 720p for Xbox (1080p on PS4). That's now two massive third party titles from different developers and different distributors that chucked console parity overboard right out of the gate.

Edit: Like the COD issue, this is still rumor. Microsoft and developers are being tight-lipped about resolution and other performance issues on multiplatform games.

Edit 2: There are enough people inside the industry confirming this that I don't think it's really accurate to call it a "rumor."

Edit 3: Bleh. 900p on PS4. That sucks. There is no reason why 1080p / 60 fps shouldn't be completely standard for next-gen games. Hopefully this is just a one-time thing resulting from cross-gen development.

This will be my the first XBox launch I've skipped.

Going PS4 this year for the free online and the extra $100 since I'll never use Kinect. My gaming has changed considerably over the last 4 years (kids) and I'm never playing anyone online anymore. I've become more of a offline franchise gamer, occasionally play FPSs online.

XBL cost is the kicker though. Not worth it for me.
