2021 Cleveland Browns -

Pettine looks like one of those dudes at the gym that scowls all the time and just does a ton of bench press. He looks totally in over his head.

I'm beginning to believe that this is true

I'm skeptical about how much time he has spent with the defense since May. I get the sense that he has spent a lot more time working with the offense, trusting Jim and the veterans to get the defense functioning properly and...well, you see the results. There isn't enough talent on this team (Hi, Ray) to mask the week-to-week issues displayed by that unit so far.

This team was built to win games by scoring 20 some points then the defense holds on. The offense and special teams has played well enough to win 3 of 4 games and the defense has flat out sucked outside of the 1st half vs. Tennessee.

CB/KR Justin Gilbert was used for the first time as a kick returner and he looked good against San Diego with 3 returns for 110 yards or a 36.7 average which is excellent. I noticed how well Gilbert looked during the game and apparently the coaches thought so as well since they just promoted him to the front line kick returner on the team.

Not only that Offensive Coordinator John DeFilippo said they are considering using him as a WR on offense.

Cleveland Browns Retweeted

Chris Tabor on Gilbert at KR: "He's going to be our guy back there."

#Browns coaches asked about playing CB Justin Gilbert as WR. they've thought about it, could explore it. Like what he's shown as returner

So has the McCown sucks crowd conveniently missed the games recently or are they silently sitting on their I told you so's until he has a performance that fits their narrative?

I took issue with the team going back to him earlier in this thread, instead of seeing what they had in Manziel, but will have to admit I was wrong. Maybe he can take them to the playoffs. He's playing well, and making their below average pass catchers productive.

The defense was awful again today. This maintains and this is not a playoff team. I see no reason to believe this will change either.

Ultimately you are likely going to be right - but right now they are still in contention for a playoff spot at least and teams in that position have to "go for it". McCown obviously deserves to remain the starter, even if its not necessarily the best thing for the long term outlook of the franchise.

You can't make a case for pulling him anytime soon given the hot hand he has. Ride that horse!

Hoping a resurgent offense energizes a lifeless defense and they start turning things around. Gurly coming to town next week doesn't really bode well for them but it would be awesome for somebody to step up, take charge and have the D shut down the Rams running game.

Yesterday was great, build on it and take the Major League approach, just go out and win the whole ####### thing!

What McCown has done is beyond any wild expectations and no one called this sort of moon shot performance. Hell I was at the 1981 game in old Municipal stadium when Sipe set the record against the BALTIMORE COLTS. We all looked at each other like, wow but no one felt like the reocrd would stand for 34 years let alone that JOSH MCCOWN would break the record in Baltimore against the Ravens.

Or that he'd be on a three game run of throwing for over 300 yards. That doesn't seem possible that no one in the entire history of the team had never had done that before but busting the single game passing record is huge. Also this isn't some cute lil Browns story, this is big time fantasy news for 2015 and it is a legit NFL football story.

The fact our defense sucks warm steaming puddles of dog crap through a straw is the reason we won't seriously compete to do any real damage this year.

I have always been of the mind that you HAVE to run the football in order to take control of the clock and manage the game/field late in games with leads. We haven't shown the ability to run consistently this year. We still have issues on our O-Line but fortunately Josh knows how to read pressure and call protections and shade away from pressure and if you noticed yesterday he nailed that backside throw to a wide-open Gary Barnidge for a long gain.

Basically this is a HUGE story but it may not get much attention because our defense sucks. I mean it really sucks but I blame DC Jim O'Neil. He is in over his head. He is the single biggest reason why the team didn't win last week IMHO and why we nearly blew a game when Josh 'Freakn' McCown set the all-time club record for passing yardage. Nobody could see it coming but its real.

Now lets see what the O-Line can do against the Broncos pass rush. If they can just hold up we actually have a shot IMHO because their offense isn't scary now.

80% of the Broncos scoring this season has come from the defense or kicker.

Eighty percent...

You don't have to admit you're wrong. Hoyer had some nice games too. Let McCown continue to drive this team (well, in the 2nd half of games at least) to 4-12 or 12-4...that's what the brass wanted when they signed him. Maybe if it's the latter we'll pass on QB and playmakers early in the draft again next year.

McCown has been a huge surprise this year. So has T. Benjamin who is also been a major reason for the passing game success.

I'm not sure if McCown can continue play this well but f he does Clev is playoff bound. The D has been very disappointing.

It's not necessarily a given they will make the playoffs, even if he does keep this up. They did lose 2 out of the last 3 games (despite those being the 3 games where he played very well statistically at least) and their record is 2-3.

Right now you have Denver and Cincinnati at 5-0, New England at 4-0, Jets at 3-1 (with tie breaker over CLE), Bills and Colts at 3-2 and the winner of tonight's game at 3-2 and loser at 2-3 (with SD having tie breaker over CLE), and Oakland at 2-3 (with tie breaker over CLE).

It will not be easy for Cleveland to make the playoffs.

Only three teams with a worse record than us right now. Tank it fellas, tank it.

1- Tank season

2- fir Farmer

3- trade Haden

4- Trade Joe Thomas

Label all the moves as "expansion without actual expansion. We suck so bad we have no idea how to get out of it other than doing this". I would be on board. Anything is better than being guaranteed to suck year in and year out for the next 40 years

One thing I notice EVERY GAME is losing due to screw-ups. A lot of time it's young players committing untimely penalties. Other times it's RBs going the wrong way. Sometimes it's poor or missed tackles.

I wonder why good teams (ala NE) do these things less frequently. More veterans? Better practicing? Same system in place longer? Team Leaders? Continuity? More emphasis on drafting players who desire to be professional? Outright refusal to pay knuckleheads? More organized coaching?

I think that suppose to be his point. I guess you should trade elite players when they get injured.

Joe is my favorite Brown, but it has been a rough year for him.

This team has zero chance to compete for a while. By the time there is even a hint of that Joe will be terribly washed up with no trade value.

I am fully in favor of a complete monster tear down and rebuild. Not sure I ever have been in the past. I am now

By and large I think he's overrated. Still, guys who can cover like him are hard to find.

I'd say blow it up but keep a core of guys. Haden and Thimas would be in that core. Hell, they might be the only guys in that core.

How do our QBs complete almost 80% of their passes (30/37) and we end p with 6 points?

Penalties, turnovers, and a #### run game.

So even when our QBs do well we stink? yeah, we need to completely blow this up. COMPLETE blow up

field position seemed consistently terrible too. Oh yeah, and that line that got McCown killed. A few of those hits were on him for holding onto the ball too long though.

Defense is still garbage too.

Agreed.

He also doesn't make you say "first round bust" like just about every other 1st round pick over the last decade.

Blah blah blah. Another re-hashed old story line. Browns suck. We get it. Bad joke, old boring as hell and who is going to read that crap and why? Why the hell should anyone care anymore about this team? They don't and they even care enough to not care so just make them a commodity.

The NFL is based on marketing. They take advantage of anything marketing relates especially if its color coordinated. They also luv tradition, etc. The most NO-BRAIN gimmic they can do is have the annual Cleveland VS. Cincinnati Halloween battle for Ohio Thursday Night all orange and brown game at night where fans get into dressing-up and awarding prizes.

Instead of Dallas or Detroit getting a home-game every year, alternate it between CLE/CIN and make it fun because the Browns will never be taken seriously and they shouldn't so long as they win but how in the world has the NFL missed this golden marketing opportunity?
