WR Sammy Watkins, BAL (1 Viewer)

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Chiefs "don't sound optimistic" WR Sammy Watkins (calf, questionable) will play in the Conference Championship game against the Bills.

Watkins got in a handful of limited practices this week and the team was initially optimistic that he would be able to play against Buffalo. It's possible that his calf issue got worse over the weekend. Watkins will still test out his calf in pre-game warmups but that rarely results in a player who isn't expected to play becoming active. Mecole Hardman finished third on the Chiefs in routes last week and drew four targets plus a rush attempt. He gets the biggest bump with Watkins presumed out while Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle both enter the tournament conversation for DFS purposes. Both receivers saw three targets last week.

Sammy Watkins (calf) is inactive for the AFC Championship Game against the Bills.

Watkins hasn't played since Week 16. His absence opposite Tyreek Hill was felt in the Divisional Round. With Bell out, Darrel Williams and a returning Clyde Edwards-Helaire will split work in the Chiefs' backfield. Joining Watkins and Bell on the shelf are OL Yasir Durant, DE Tim Ward, DT Khalen Saunders, CB BoPete Keyes and LB Willie Gay.

Sammy Watkins (calf) returned to practice Monday.

Watkins was absent from practice on Friday but was clearly healthy enough to open the week on the field. The latest report suggests the Chiefs are not "optimistic" he suits up for the Super Bowl, but a full week of practice would obviously change that outlook. With Demarcus Robinson on the COVID list as of Monday, it's possible Mecole Hardman opens in two-wide sets by default if Watkins can't go.

Sammy Watkins (calf) said he's "optimistic" about playing in the Super Bowl against the Bucs.

It would be an upset if Watkins was unable to suit up for the Super Bowl after practicing Monday. Watkins, who hasn't been at full strength for some time, could be a sneaky DFS option if he's a full go against Tampa's leaky secondary. Demarcus Robinson (COVID-19) being in question for the Super Bowl could give Watkins more run (and potentially more targets). Watkins was running pass routes on around three quarters of Patrick Mahomes' drop backs before the calf injury. Mecole Hardman's usage doesn't change dramatically with Watkins in the Chiefs' lineups.

Sammy Watkins said he's open to re-signing with the Chiefs this offseason.

Probably it goes without saying that Watkins would be cool with another year in the league's best offense. But it's not sure thing the Chiefs will be aggressive in re-signing Watkins, who has missed chunks of the past two seasons with a laundry list of injuries. Twenty-eight years old in June, Watkins could get more financially favorable offers from receiver-needy teams this offseason. KC could always upgrade at receiver with a splash signing like Will Fuller, Marvin Jones, or even Allen Robinson.

Speaking Tuesday, Chiefs GM Brett Veach was noncommittal on re-signing impending free agent Sammy Watkins.

"Sammy is a big part of this offense," Veach claimed. "When he’s healthy, we’re better. If there’s a way we can make it work again, we’ll certainly try to do that. I love having him around.'' In other words, if Watkins is cheap enough, the Chiefs will consider it. Watkins' three years in Kansas City have been an injury-marred bust, one that featured a pay cut last offseason. The Chiefs do seem to love what Watkins provides "when healthy," but they probably won't be willing to gamble on "when healthy" for a fourth year in 2021.

Sammy Watkins (calf) was limited during Thursday's practice.

Le’Veon Bell (knee) also remained limited Thursday. Watkins said Tuesday that he's "optimistic" about suiting up for the Super Bowl, and his late-week practice status would seem to point in that direction. The Chiefs will release their final injury report on Friday. Watkins back in the lineup means Byron Pringle is no longer a cheap DFS option. Mecole Hardman's snaps share and targets don't usually change with Watkins active.

Not the quickest healer this Watkins. If he is healthy and plays it gives KC a huge boost. He can be a sneaky MVP candidate as he will get 1v1 coverage and be able to work the zones on short and intermediate routes. A big third down contributor while the attention is on Kelce/Hill.

Sammy Watkins (calf) is questionable for Super Bowl LV against the Buccaneers.

Watkins' upgrade to full participation in Friday's practice is a giveaway he'll be available for kick-off Sunday. Although there are a wide range of outcomes for his usage (including being limited throughout the game), odds are the 27-year-old starts in two-wide sets and plays ahead of both Demarcus Robinson (COVID) and Mecole Hardman. Byron Pringle, who mirrored Tyreek Hill in snaps in the Conference Championship game, will be an afterthought if Watkins truly is at full strength.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Sammy Watkins (calf) will suit up for Super Bowl LV against the Bucs.

Watkins has been trending this way all week after not suiting up since Week 16. Watkins' Super Bowl usage is a complete wild card in an offense that has been trying to get Mecole Hardman more involved the past few weeks. Seeing as his last snaps were Dec. 27, Watkins probably won't be ready for his usual complement of plays. Any Chiefs receiver offers attainable DFS upside, but you're on your own when it comes to deciding to play Watkins.

Sammy Watkins caught one pass for 13 yards in the Chiefs' Super Bowl LV loss to the Bucs.

Watkins' third quarter reception was his lone target in a disastrous evening for the Chiefs' offense. Watkins’ third year as a Chief was by far his worst. Held to 10 regular season appearances for the second time in three seasons, Watkins’ 421 yards receiving were a new career low, even lower than the total he managed during his eight-game 2016 in Buffalo. Simply incapable of staying healthy, Watkins heads to free agency having scored just eight touchdowns across three Chiefs campaigns with the best quarterback in the universe under center. Teams will still be tempted by Watkins’ theoretical deep speed on the open market, but the Chiefs have probably seen all they need to see and will move on in a year where the salary cap is decreasing.

Did anyone go from potential superstar and heights imagined to almost as useless as he is now? A rare fall from grace as far as personal achievements go for Watkins.
Almost wish he'd been a complete bust, rather than these periodic teases over the years that tempted you to start him on occasion, and prevented you from dropping him. Huge disappointment.

Didn't Watkins miss almost every game this season anyway - what really changes for Hardman if Watkins leaves in free agency?
I think towards the end of the year they made more of an effort to get him plays. Demarcus Robinson is also slated to be a FA. I’m also old enough to remember that some wrs need some time to acclimate to the league, and hardman was making a significant jump in level and seems to be putting it together. And target increase should be expected imo.

Granted he still is behind kelce and hill so maybe low floor high ceiling but better than desperate dart throw. He will be in a better position to get targets though.

Kansas City general manager Brett Veach said the team would "try" to re-sign unrestricted free agent Sammy Watkins.

Watkins could be a casualty of the league's decreased salary cap after he made $15.8 million in 2020, struggling through a range of injuries that cost him five games and parts of others. "Sammy is a big part of this offense and when he's healthy, we're better," Veach said. "If there's a way we can make it work again, we'll certainly try to do that." ESPN's Adam Teicher said the Chiefs re-signing Watkins this offseason would be a clear indication that the team does not see Mecole Hardman as an every-down wideout. Even if the Chiefs let Watkins walk, Hardman -- who ran costly incorrect routes at least twice in the team's Super Bowl loss -- wouldn't be guaranteed an every-down spot in the KC offense.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Ravens will host free agent WR Sammy Watkins on Tuesday.

Watkins has multiple connections in Baltimore, working with pass game specialist Keith Williams has his own personal receivers coach and past ties to OC Greg Roman from their time together in Buffalo. The Ravens' front office hasn't hidden their desire to land a top receiver during free agency but, to this point, have only whiffed on the one-year, $7 million contract extended to JuJu Smith-Schuster. As a personality that has always felt better being surrounded by people he's comfortable with, Watkins seems destined to sign with Baltimore in the coming days.

Free agent WR Sammy Watkins will visit the Colts Wednesday.

Watkins will visit the Ravens Tuesday, and he’s also drawn interest from the Texans and Titans, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Watkins’ market is starting to heat up now that Kenny Golladay and JuJu Smith-Schuster are signed and sealed. Watkins would be a T.Y. Hilton replacement in Indy.

Ravens signed Sammy Watkins, formerly of the Chiefs, to a one-year, $5.0 million contract.

Baltimore aimed higher earlier in free agency but whiffed despite offering more money in some cases. Watkins is still a reasonable consolation prize when he's healthy, however, especially in this offense. He can play inside and out and has always been a physical player in the run game, but his fantasy value will be limited while attached to Lamar Jackson. This signing won't prevent the Ravens from selecting a Round 1 or Round 2 receiver in the upcoming draft, a scenario that would further crater Marquise Brown's flex appeal. This signing is better in the non-fantasy part of the world's simulation.

ESPN’s actual headline:

Ravens Add Watkins as WR Hunt Ends

Yep, locked up Sammy.  We’re good to go!   :lmao:
Like fantasy football team owners, it sometimes feels good to add a dude that will take up one of your empty IR slots so it doesn’t sit there unused.

Sammy Watkins averaged 15.28 fantasy points per game in two seasons with the Bills under offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who is now Baltimore's offensive coordinator.

Watkins signed with Baltimore Friday on a one-year deal worth $5 million. He'll once again work with Roman, who was Buffalo's offensive coordinator in 2015 and 2016. That Bills offense was similarly run heavy: Watkins led the team with a meager 96 targets in 2015. He made the most of the limited opportunity, notching nine touchdowns and scoring the eighth most fantasy points per game among wideouts. Watkins over his 21 games in Roman's offense averaged 7.1 targets per game, which works out to 112 targets over a 16-game season. Watkins replicating these numbers five years later -- he's still somehow only 27 -- seems unlikely, but his history and understanding of Roman's system could play an outsized factor in his role with the Ravens. If ESPN's Jamison Hensley is correct in projecting Watkins as a reliable underneath option for Lamar Jackson, he's not going to see the high-value, downfield targets he saw in Buffalo, where he averaged 17.5 yards per catch. More recently, Watkins averaged 11.4 yards per reception in Kansas City.

Sammy Watkins expects Ravens OC Greg Roman to "open up" his offense in 2021.

Watkins played for Roman in Buffalo and insists there's another level to his offense. "He’s going to utilize us in so many different ways," Watkins said. "He’s got a complex offense. I know the world hasn’t been seeing that yet, but he’s definitely going to open it up this year, run the ball and do, I’m pretty sure, all types of things with this offense.” The Ravens' offense grew so predictable in 2020 that Lamar Jackson publicly lamented other teams calling out their plays. A huge problem was the lack of talent and versatility at the receiver position, an area where Watkins at least offers an upgrade on Willie Snead opposite Marquise Brown. Watkins makes the Ravens better, but he will not be making fantasy waves after face-planting with the league's best quarterback in Kansas City.

Ravens News 6/16: Minicamp Standouts and more

Excerpt:

Veteran Sammy Watkins had the play of the day when he hauled in a corner fade in the end zone with his fingertips and toe-tapped for the score. Making it even more impressive is that it came against Humphrey, who was all over him in coverage. With 33 career touchdowns, the veteran definitely has some red-zone savvy.

Watkins also caught a bomb from Jackson for what would have been a long touchdown, but Jackson’s throw was the more impressive part of the play. He flicked it while stepping up in the pocket and still put it right on the money.

ESPN's Jamison Hensley reports Sammy Watkins "was the Ravens' best receiver at minicamp."

Hensley said Watkins impressed throughout minicamp, reeling in contested catches and burning Pro Bowl CB Marlon Humphrey for a long touchdown. The veteran receiver, Hensley added, has shown chemistry with Lamar Jackson this offseason. "I'm not going to lie to you; it is fun," Jackson said of Watkins. "A big receiver, nice target, fast guy. Sammy is going to make our job a lot easier." Watkins could be an overlooked late-round fantasy pick this summer as drafters eye rookie WR Rashod Bateman and Marquise Brown. None of the team's wideouts will offer much in the way of consistent fantasy production in the Ravens' run-heavy attack. Baltimore receivers in 2020 hauled in 137 catches -- the lowest total in the league by a wide margin.

It's wild to me that Sammy Watkins just turned 28 last week.  Seems like he should be 32-33.  I can see something like 45/525/5 this year.

He is talented, just not consistently. This will be his eight season and he has not played all games in a season since his rookie year. He has not yet matched his rookie reception total of 65.

Meh, is he talented? It's more than missing games. Doesn't seem to want it, maybe just soft. If you can't do it with Mahomes in KC you suck.

ESPN's Jamison Hensley reported Friday that Sammy Watkins has been Baltimore's best wide receiver at training camp.

Ravens OC Greg Roman, whom Watkins played under in 2015, went further: “he’s one of the best receivers in the NFL, period.” Calling Watkins one of the best wide receivers in the league is peak July, but it's worth considering that Watkins was a standout in minicamp as well. He appears likely to have a sizable early role in the Ravens offense, and perhaps a role with more versatility than he saw in Kanas City. If the Ravens passing game takes even a small step forward this season, Watkins could be a steal in the late rounds of fantasy drafts.

Good NFL receiver when on the field, but him standing out probably has more to due with the rest of the group on that team versus him. He is a savvy veteran who when healthy and focused can make plays, however if he gets over 600 receiving yards I would be shocked.

Hah, so... being locked down by single coverage or a hammy is playing his role.

I think you should go into every matchup and think you are going to beat this dude.  If you can't get open in KC with Kelce/Hill taking the double teams... you're washed.  This thread needs a title change 🤣
