***Official 2024 Golf Thread, pick up the pace, HCP be a changing *** (2 Viewers)

Just shot a 79, beating my previous best round by 3 strokes. My birdie putt ( a 20 foot downhill right to left swinger) on 18 came up 6 inches short of going in)

Gave up the game from age ~25 to 32ish until I finally came to the realization that I only had so much time left to spend with my dad, so I better take advantage. Broke 100 4 years ago, 90 about a year later. I honestly never thought I could do much better.

Just a wild round. It has to be said, I got a few VERY lucky breaks after a bad bogey-bogey start. (3 putted the 2nd hole from what should have been a very easy spot)

- Basically skulled my tee shot on the par 3 4th. The ball somehow skipped through the rough and rolled onto the green to inside 10 feet. 2 putt par.

-Yanked my 2nd shot on 13 (par 5) way left into a tree. The ball dropped straight down less than a foot inside the OB line. Had to punch out  backwards (due to the tree) and then hit my approach over the back. Managed to get up and down for a bogey.

- Yanked my drive left on the next hole, but it stayed in bounds. Still made a double (lipped out a tough bogey putt) but it easily could have been much worse.

- Pulled my tee shot (par 3) on 15 to an area that should have been OB. The ball held in the grass less than a foot from the cart path (at which point it would have bounced OB). I had a ~25 yard blind chip 15 feet up over a bunker and I knocked it in for a birdie.

At that point, I knew if I par'd in, it would be a 79 . Put myself in a tough spot next to the 16th green (downhill lie, short-sided, heavy downhill to the hole) and tried to get too fancy. Basically bladed it, but it rolled onto the green and downhill to 2 feet. Super embarrassed, but I made the par putt.

- Got up and down from a bunker on 17. Made a 20 foot downhill putt that dropped on the very last rotation.

Was absolutely shaking in my shoes on the last hole(par 5) . Basically ran up the tee and piped a drive before I had time to think about it.  Was INCREDIBLY nervous on the 2nd shot, but managed to hit my hybrid to a good spot. Had like 105 yards in and basically played for the bail-out right of the green. Must have gotten a good bounce because I caught a piece of the green and 2 putted.

So....for anyone struggling....who thinks they suck at golf. Just keep grinding.  I couldn't get through a round without throwing clubs and walking off at the turn 10 years ago. Now I'm sort of decent.
Congrats, brother!!! This is awesome and gives me hope. Been having a rough stretch of hitting beautiful shots followed up with a shank on the next swing and can't put a decent round together.

Who has recent experience with a young kid who's infatuated with golf?

My 3.5-yr-old is obsessed, and is gifted with coordination, patience, and determination.  I built a hole with a real putting green pin in my yard, cut the grass short around it with a painted green...and he's hitting real clubs with plastic balls from 15-20 yards out.  He'll hit for an hour or more.  Then come in to the patio and putt on our practice strip.  He will do the same routine over and over, which is shocking to me for a kid this young.  I've just started to take him to our local range to hit real balls, and our first trip i bought 60 balls and he hit 55.  Then chipped and putted for 30 min.

He also just started his first team sport with organized soccer, which he loves at the 'games' but isn't interested in practicing at home for more than 15 min.  We hit baseballs...same thing...15 min.  And shoot hoop.

How do I keep him from burning out, while also supporting his growth in the game?
I've been taking my daughter (7.5) to the First Tee Par 3 here in Lakeland.  We hit a few balls, putt, talk.  I let her go as long as she wants and then we leave.  The last time we went her coordination and feel seemed to have clicked.  She was making contact every time.  Turning and smiling at me after every shot.  After she finished the bucket she says, "can we go play some holes?!"

She starts a beginner girls camp next week.  I've seen it conducted and they don't just beat balls on the range.  They play games, learn about golf, and just seem to have an all around fun time.  Maybe look into something like that for him?  Although he may be too young.  I don't think the camps here start until the kids are at least 5+

If he likes it that much I think you can probably foster it more just by spending that time with him.  Let him go as much as he wants.  Limit any instruction and pile on the encouragement.  If he's already hitting real balls buy him a nice kids set that he can grow into.  He can hold the clubs and get a feel for the weight of the head even if he can't quite fully swing it yet.

My buddy has an 8th grade daughter that just made the MN state tournament, both individual and team.

I played 18 with them last year. She kicked both our butts. She's so good, he doesn't even have time to play anymore as he's taking her to play around the country.

If she doesn't burn out, it'll be fun to see how far she gets.

My buddy told me that a girl can get a free ride to a D1 school if she can average 90. That's is a legit 90 though. Not a "90" like the way most golfers play. Still seems like an easier path than many other sports if they have an interest.

Im always amazed at how much most people cheat. Ive been in the same league for 20+ years and most guys still ask "what's the rule on this?" whenever they lose a ball. SMH. Really? This is the first time you ever lost a ball playing golf?

Yeah, I had to explain to my buddy that he was hitting 4 if he dropped after putting his tee shot in a backyard, he insisted it was 3 like a hazard and I gave up trying to explain the colored stakes.

Most weekend warriors take distance when they hit one OB just to keep things moving when the courses are packed with 4-somes.  They should be hitting a provisional, which is what we do if it looks like it's close to the white stakes.  But, especially if you crank it into someone's azaleas.

That rule has changed for local rules .

Balls Lost or Out of Bounds: Alternative to Stroke and Distance: A new Local Rule will now be available in January 2019, permitting committees to allow golfers the option to drop the ball in the vicinity of where the ball is lost or out of bounds (including the nearest fairway area), under a two-stroke penalty. It addresses concerns raised at the club level about the negative impact on pace of play when a player is required to go back under stroke and distance. The Local Rule is not intended for higher levels of play, such as professional or elite level competitions. (Key change: this is a new addition to support pace of play)

Great feedback, thx GB.  I already have some legit youth clubs, which he's on the low end of the age range for...and is using every day.  His contact is amazing, even though he has to wrap the club head all the way around his body. He's just not quite getting the distance yet to get to the first pin on the range.  So I love the idea of creating some games at the range in addition to beating balls.  Ours has 2 chipping greens that we could hit shots in to from 10-30 yards out that he will love.

I think i"m going to wait after his 4th birthday in Dec to start looking at camps or instruction.  And keep it fun til then.

My club did this as well.

Played in a charity scramble on Monday with my dad, brother and a friend.  One of my brother's friends passed away suddenly like 3 years ago (Pancreatitis, came out of nowhere. Went to sleep. Didn't wake up. Kid was like 29. Awful) and his family started up a foundation in his name.  Its a fun event and they had like 130 golfers this year (plus it was like 90 degrees, so it was a long day). Lots of money raised, saw some people I hadn't seen in years. Good times.

We won 2 years ago in the first year (shot 15 under, albeit on a pretty easy course) but now there's a 3 handicap who shows up with three other sub 5's, so we dont really stand a chance. Ended up at -11 (tougher course now) but they got to -15, so no dice.

Still a really fun day. Always nice to get out there and get some swings in without the pressure of posting a score.

Only downside was some slight embarrassment on my part. A girl I've known for like 30 years drove up in a cart (I thought the coast was clear, as the actual beer cart girl had just driven past) and caught me trying to take a leak in the woods off 9.  I wasn't in the act yet (basically just had my belt open) but there was no hiding my intentions.   But I guess when you've known someone since Kindergarten, getting caught trying to take a piss probably isn't the most embarrassing act they've seen you commit.

This has always been the rule in our league. I usually say “you can hit 3 from the tee or 4 from where it went out” and they look at me like I’m being some kind of ####.

Might have been embarrassing if it was 45 degrees out. Not 90. No Costanza

I believe so. Unless its specifically designated as a hazard, a "lost ball" still technically requires stroke and distance penalty.

At least....I think.

Our course is clearly marked. White is 2 strokes, red is 1. Lost ball is same as OB (2 strokes), and I don’t care how “sure” you are that it “should be right here”.
I was joking.  Its lost its lost.  Same concept....I was going for the built in excuse :)

Boys trip scheduled for the weekend of July 10 out to Scottsdale, Vrbo booked a few blocks away from old downtown(? I think). Still figuring out what 3 courses we will be playing but it’ll be an early Saturday round followed by a nap and then watching the UFC card that night. Sunday will be a drunken golf round so the level of course won’t factor in as much and then Monday one of the tpc courses before flying out that night. Fluids, sunscreen and deodorant are going to be in high demand! I can’t fn wait.

I am pretty inconsistent with my irons lately.  I hit them much better out if the slight rough than fairway.  From what I can tell that means I am not hitting the ball first and instead "scooping" the ball.  Not sure how hard a habit this will be to break.

@Zow @kutta any tips for playing 54 to 72 holes in 72 hours mid July in Scottsdale? :lmao:
Whisky, sunscreen, and lots and lots of Liquid IV.

Other tips:

Play before 7 AM

Find courses with shade (tough in Scottsdale)

Get frozen towels and just drape them over your neck (Mesa Country Club has these amazing mango infused towels for this purpose)

Best suggestion: come play a round with me at my club in Flagstaff.

If you're considering certain courses I'm happy to provide you input.

Looking at camelback early Saturday morning, troon or we ki pa on Sunday and still figuring out the other course to play with them. Closing out with tpc stadium course on Monday.

We Ko Pa is great this time of year because they can water. Definitely worth it. Zero shade. They also have 36 holes and I'd play both.

Troon is very good. I'm not so certain on Camelback this time of year.

TPC Stadium is overrated and overpriced this time of year, but I get it - I love playing courses I see on TV, too, so not going to talk you out of it.

Yeah, one of my buddies is hell bent on it. I wanted to play the Boulder course but I’ll bend on that one. Hard part is the sat morning round on the 10th as most are gone already.

TPC Champions course is actually quite nice and much more affordable. Grey hawk in that area is good, too.

Play at Top Golf. It’s right by the casino too so you can play poker at night.

Have a great trip! We still need to get that steak dinner one of these days.

Had such a fun day playing with my dad and brother yesterday.  Even if I hadn't gotten decent and learned to enjoy the game, playing with them on father's day would be enough to justify all the frustration.  Our 3rd brother is flying in for a visit next month and we're gonna get out as a 4some for the first time ever. Although brother #3 doesn't play, it will be fun to have him out there and I'm sure we'll be able to goad him into taking a few cuts.  Here's what happened the last confirmed time he swung a club (pretty sure also on a father's day)

My dad originally wasn't gonna play after having minor surgery last week (got a few stitches and staples in his back from having something per-cancerous cut out...sadly a multiple times per year event for him due to not wearing sunscreen the first 40 years of his life). But after a week at the beach, he was aching to play and gave it a go.

Shot an 81 (my 2nd best score ever after my 79 a couple of weeks ago) despite 3 doubles and a triple (on the 3rd easiest hole on the course.....brutal)  The 3 doubles were all on the front and were the result of some poor chips and putts. (and one horrendous bounce) The triple was just a straight yanked tee shot on the worst possible hole (and then nearly repeating the feat on my re-tee, requiring a punch-out). Very disappointing, because it followed a stretch where I birdied 3 in a row (first time ever) and 4 in 5 holes.

I'm like 1 more really good round away from being a single digit index. If you told me even 2 years ago I'd ever get there I would have laughed in your face. As happy as I am with it, I know that I've kinda screwed my brother and I in our upcoming handicapped match. (which is coming up this weekend). In the past month, I've basically gone from what could probably be considered a dangerous 12-13 (when paired in a best ball with someone who is better) to a pretty mediocre 10-11.   But I'm not one to sandbag, so if we go down, we're going down fairly. And I'm still probably getting 8-9 shots.

Played Spyglass today, will be playing Pebble tomorrow. Awesome weather here.

I suck at golf so I don't have high expectations but my one highlight was the Par-3 fifteen. 120 yards, hit a 9-iron within 4 feet of the pin. It landed on the front right of the green, rolled back and to the left and settled in about 4-feet behind the stick. There was a closest to the pin contest on that hold but it was unfortunately for the women (and currently at 7-feet away). The men's closest to the pin was a few holes earlier. DAMN!

Between these two courses, it's about $1000 in greens fees not to mention cart fees, club rental and caddies.  Thank goodness I'm here for business!

Just moved back to the Pacific Northwest and joined Michelbook Country Club. Pretty fair deal for a limited membership (four rounds a month plus other perks and access). Played my first round last week and played surprisingly well for me, carding an 89. Course didn't play as difficult as I thought it looked in the online flybys of the holes on their website.

My brother and I put a fairly solid whooping on the club champ and his partner a couple of weeks ago to get to the semis of our tournament.  Won 5 and 4 and were never really tested (only lost 1 hole, due to both of us 3 putting). We both played well and they just didn't make any putts. Champ shot even par but probably missed 8 or 9 birdie putts inside 12 feet. And his partner probably had a half dozen as well. I made a birdie- net Eagle on 2 to get the momentum started and we never looked back.

The dagger was on 12. We're already up 3 and they both put their drives in the fairway. Both of us lose our drives to the right into a red-stakes area (we're each getting a stroke, as its the 3 handicap hole). We're both likely dead but hit provisionals. Brother yanks his OB left and mine is bad. We both go over and look and sure enough, we manage to find both balls.

I have a horrible lie and it takes me 2 to get out. I end up getting on in 4 and missing a tough 10 foot downhill putt for 5 net 4. My brother gets on the green in 3  but he's all the way on the top tier with a nearly impossible 2 putt. He actually gets the speed right but his line is all wrong, leaving him like a 12 footer for 5. He knocks it in and they both miss their par putts.

Brother makes a tap in birdie on the next hole (Par 5, wind HEAVILY behind us and he knocked a 7 iron to 4 feet. Babied what should have been an easy eagle putt) and I make a net birdie on 14 to close the door.

I believe all the groups left have higher indexes than us, so the shoe will be on the other foot going forward. But we're both playing really well right now (I'm down to a 10 flat. Should have cracked single digits but I ####ed up the 18th hole on Friday), so I really like our chances.

Also played with the best player I've ever played with on Saturday. Recent grad from a big ten school (Where he was first team all league a couple of years ago) who was 1 shot short of qualifying for the Travelers a couple of weeks ago (lost in a playoff). Just talent like I've never seen.  Walks onto the course at 9AM on a Saturday morning, no warmup and just massacres a 320 yard + drive. A couple of insane bunker shots and I've never seen someone control hooks and fades like that. Man, what a joy to watch the game played by essentially a pro up close and personal. Will definitely be following the kid going forward, as he's gonna make a run at the tour. A long shot even with his obvious talent, but I'll be rooting for him. Good kid too.

You're right by The Dunes, which is phenomenal. Isn't cheap though. My favorite was River Hills, but it's been > 10 years. Hopefully it's held up...fun track.

Friday night me and two buddy’s flew from the bay area to Scottsdale for a weekend of golf, Timed it right with a major heat wave hitting

saturday: 650 tee time at the Ambiente course followed by 1207 at silverado. i only made it through the front 9 of silverado as it was 116 and i was dead at that point. ambiente was a nice links style course but over priced imo compared to our other courses. watched ufc that night at the wasted grain and was not disappointed.

10 am tee time on sunday at troon north and with military discount only paid $85, a steal imo. played much better than i did saturday and was happy with an 85, the course was in fantastic shape and sunday was only 106. our dumb asses saw top golf on the way back to our vrbo and decided to shower and uber back for 3 hours of top golf. a shower cocktail and a pre uber cocktail plus non stop jack and diets for 3 hours meant that top golf was a blur. knowing we had a 1040 tee time for the tpc stadium course we decided to keep the drinks going til 11pm when i somehow realized we had to wash the sheets and towels in the morning before leaving ####

the hangover was real, the 106 degree heat helped to sweat some of it out but still shot a 47 on the front 9, luckily a hot dog at the turn helped fuel a 41 on the back 9. not a very difficult course but it was also in great condition and the military discount kept the cost under $100, but it still think troon north was the better course. the best part was the use of the locker room after so we could shower before eating at twin peaks and catching our flights home. Pars on 16 and 17 (drove the green)  were also a nice bonus, hitting both gir’s will make the future waste management tourneys more fun to watch.

i’m still dead and rehydrating but can’t wait to visit scottsdale again real soon. frontier was $40 roundtrip (yes 4 0) and there are no bag charges for military so i’ll be back once it cools a tad!

How about Barefoot-Dye?
I haven't played, but my old man gives it an emphatic thumbs up. He's a stickler for good conditions and he thinks that is the best he's experienced at Myrtle. It's on the top of my list for the next time we go and the kids are an age we can leave them alone. Or if they're good enough by then, bring them along.

Last week we drove through Northern MI and back down Wisconsin.   Will post some of the courses we played when I get time.  Some were not "famous" names.

Bucks Run was our first course on the trip. This is one of my favorite courses anywhere.  Lakes and rivers disect the course.

Located in Mt Pleasant MI it is about 2 hours from Metro-Detroit.

Played Greywalls in Marquette MI. in the UP.  Was is the best course I ever played?  No, did it have some of the most scenic holes I have ever played?  YES!

Check out the holes here.

There are rock formations all over the course.  Some greens were lodged in between 60-80 ft stone walls.   One hole from 220 out I pushed my 5 wood way right and this huge stone wall and it hit another stone wall and bounced on the green.

We have a Dye reservation but think we're going to cancel - that course looks like it might take all the fun out of golf.

I think The Grande Dunes looks much more fun.

If you don't hit the ball straight a/o prone to mi####ting approach shots then I can certainly see that outcome. Unless I'm playing more come that time it's probably one of those courses in which I'd play 12-14 holes about 3-5 over, but struggle to break 100 cause of the other 4-6 holes.

Touched a club for the first time in a month.

Put together a "disappointing" 81.   I hit a lot of fantastic shots, hit 3 completely insane bunker shots today. Driver was off most of the day but not terrible.  Then things all of a sudden went south for 5 holes.  I couldn't hit any club close to where I wanted.  Driver/irons/wedges.

Overall pleased with the day. Had 2 awful doubles, one from a topped drive. It's been years since I topped a drive like that

had 3 birdies on tuesday, including a 5 on a par 6, damn triple killed my card when i bounced one off the cart path OB on a par 3. Lake Chabot was not the hardest of courses but fun to play a par 6

#1 unwritten rule that everyone thinks but no one says to the group in front of them

'hey guys, you're NOT pros, stop hitting from the pro tees you're holding EVERYONE up with your 180 yard drive that puts you at the youth tees. stop it already. use the white tees like the rest of us'.

oh, and stop with the pretend mafia-don-turned-weekend-golfer cigar smoking business. just.stop. you leave your stubs everywhere. there are garbage cans at EVERY tee box, idiot. use them.

thanks
