I wish they would focus on the WC's that can be corrected, not the ones in the past.

Hopefully they are using the trail of breadcrumbs from previous WC bidding corruption to lead them forward into the current ones.

If you are going to root out all the wrongdoers in this you have to go all the way back to the roots. Letting officials that corrupted the process in '98 or '10 or whenever slide means an increased chance in this all happening again.

Outside of a few lifer bureaucrats I can't imagine that anyone involved with FIFA (and the individual federations) is not corrupt.
Somebody was feeding info to Andrew Jennings and to the FBI. And that somebody probably was still there at FIFA applauding Blatter today.

"You probably need a person who is not terribly likable like one of these Germans or [u.S. Soccer president] Sunil Gulati, somebody whom they don't really love but who is credible as a cleanup person."

-- Former FIFA reform adviser Mark Pieth on the need for a caretaker president who can push through reforms with the FIFA structure, more than for Sepp Blatter to stay and implement them himself or for a successor to take over

I assume that "somebody they don't really love" is a FIFA-specific thing, but I really have no problems with Gulati. It's hard to argue the sport's success with him at the helm (though you could argue that the growth was natural and he had nothing to do with it).

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini will miss the Champions League Final Saturday w/ a calf injury. Barcelona have moved from -152 to -170. 12m

FIFA went about this all wrong. They should have just said from the beginning, the country that pays the most gets the Cup. That way it wouldn't be bribes, it would be an auction.

And we're deprived of one of the best story lines for the final, the Suarez teeth v Chiellinni shoulder rematch.

Also kinda cool to see how one player gets priced into the odds. If the move was related to Chiellini, him being out gives Barca about a 2.6% greater chance to lift the Cup.

The US Senate is now getting involved in 2022.

According to an ESPN report, a Senate subcommittee is being formed to look into the human rights issue related to Qatar 2022. Here is a quote from the chair of the Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, Insurance and Data Security

"The FBI and the indictments certainly indicate that something is not right within this organisation, and then the resignation of the newly-elected ... president is further indication that something inappropriate, improper is occurring, and the part that has always interested me the most is what's on in Qatar in regard to the building of the stadiums," Moran said. "My thought is that at some point in time ... surely now in the process of reforming FIFA as new leadership takes place ... one of the things I want to explore and put a focus on is Qatar.

"Shining the light on that I think will be beneficial to ending the labour practices and the human rights violations, and this needs to be an agenda item of FIFA as they change the way, as they hopefully change the way they do business," Moran said.

@McDonnellDan: John Delaney confirms that FIFA paid FAI 5 million in 2009 after the Thierry Henry handball so they wouldn't proceed with a legal case.

ETA: 5 million Euros

Whew! Now that we have our country all settled, its nice to have extra time and money to focus on other issues in the world.
Thousands of slaves are dying over there. It's a fair fight to pick up.
While I empathize with their plight - we can not save everyone in the world from injustice, and we have far bigger problems in our own country that we can attend to.

Like setting up the nba finals on a far better schedule than what it is now

Exactly! Who in charge of that? They should be arrested...I almost forgot the NBA was still going on.

It's 100% in my self-interest for the US Congress to do everything it can to help get a World Cup back in the US. And focusing on the dead slaves in Qatar is a good thing in it's own right. Where's the downside again?

Reports out of England that there is a growing support for David Beckham as the next FIFA president. Especially after he gets knighted and becomes SIR David Beckham.....

Other reports (On Eurosport) out of Qatar are that "not a single worker has died" on world cup construction.

UK sportsbook giant William Hill installed UEFA chief Michel Platini as the 6-5 favorite. Prince Ali bin al-Hussein (who ran against Sepp Blatter last week) is next at 7-4, followed by Luis Figo at 6-1.
Right now - I'll take the field bet. People will come out of the woodwork that were very reluctant to challenge Blatter.

Power grab by Putin maybe. Silvio "Bunga Bunga" Berlosconi might be interesting too.
Maybe Beckham ditches Miami for something like this

And reporters over there haven't been arrested, they just wandered into small rooms and were unable to get out again, I'm sure.

Maybe they didnt die on the construction site? If they crawl away to die across the street does it count?

IT'S MILNER TIME

Decent free signing I guess
Like this signing a lot...
Solid player, free transfer and English. Yeah probably a good signing.
I like Milner and think he makes sense alongside Henderson, but 150,000 pounds a week is a pretty hefty salary for him.
English salaries are going to go through the roof. Might look different in a couple years.

Do you think the whole country/government is shutting down to handle this? We can multitask pretty well.
