Between the Bucks and the Leafs, @gruecd and I probably pretty miserable to be around today...
I'm already over it.  The Bucks' win last year was a nice reprieve, but other than that we haven't won anything around here since the Packers won the Super Bowl back in 2011.  I'm used to being disappointed.

Playing juxt in chess and possibly having dinner with triman next week motivated me to run and finally test my ankle out for real today.  8 months since I’ve let it rip and first time really running since surgery  and I was able to do ok.  Couple of 13:30 miles with some walking and some short sustained 8min pace.  Felt good.

@beer 30 - Garmin watch posted to Strava for first time

And here I was thinking I was special. I no longer wish to have dinner with you @tri-man 47 😡

I’d feel for you but we toured Alabama today, the tour guide mentioned the 4 national championships since he started school there (he just finished his masters). All I could say was “how’s your basketball team?”

Rock Chalk.

I'm surprised he didn't put more thought into heat management.  Should have borrowed tactics from hot ultramarathoners and did ice or something.  Just seems like having crew members spray you with water is not the best way to go about preventing overheating from 111 layers of clothing.

New partner/shared app with Strava to help recovery.  Seems pretty smart with a few minutes clicking about, will see what it tells me tomorrow.

This is not bad using the freebie Strava version, a bunch of stuff would be unlocked for Premium Strava folks. It’s guided mobility and strength stuff, unclear on how much it’s actually tailored to your activities and HR reading and self reported sorenesses. The one I did was a ‘click through’ each movement as opposed to more of a live feel.

It’s going to be largely redundant to my peloton stretches and core stuff but it may yield more targeted stuff to premium members or if it starts seemingly telling me stuff based on completed runs.  I’ll keep using it here and there to see how it goes.

It's $5/month.  How about you shoot the lock off your wallet and support the poor people who give you that awesome tool?

Gotta say, @AAABatteries just set a high bar for the “Dinners with Tri” tour.  Tour of the Coca-Cola campus (HQ), walking tour of the downtown area, and an enjoyable dinner.  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Many thanks, AAA!
:kicksrock:   sadly I don’t have time off tomorrow to take you to the Space and rocket center. And my wife might kill me with all she’s doing this week - end of the school  year is a bit much when you’re a preschool teacher with 4 kids in school plus one in college. Looking forward to a beer with dinner!

First I’m hearing of this. Thanks!

Stretching? Who stretches 🤷

now excuse me as I recover from reaching to pick up a tennis ball. 👴

Hey, I get to run a race in your town ...you're covered.  I'm glad you mentioned the S&R Center ...maybe I'll visit there midday on Saturday before heading down the road.

I did my marathon test run Saturday morning.  Learned a few things, my HR strap chafed and drew blood under my arm, no bueno.  Pinky toe got a blister on the bottom, weird spot.  I think some of you lube toes, maybe I should do that? Goal was 3 hrs and 20 miles, did 17 and 2.5, my legs felt dead and some groin pain so I called it early.  Had a gel at 6 miles and it seemed fine but had some stomach cramping around mile 13 so think I’m just going straight water for the race. Felt awful afterwards and expected Sunday to be rough and was totally fine, no soreness, nothing. Mowed my lawn and wasn’t even worried my wife was gonna video me limping around the yard.
Turns out that groin pain is a small hernia, doc said don’t run the marathon next week.  Laprascopic(def spelled wrong) surgery is the only fix.

good news I can still ride my bike, bad news it’s finally nice outside and I can’t run ☹️

Damn sorry. How did the hernia diagnosis come about, I was thinking this was me in the past but it was adductor stuff coming up into the lower abs.

Good luck with recovery.

Dr google told me about a month ago.  I didn’t want to go to a real doctor and confirm until after the marathon.  The test run was uncomfortable but I could get thru it with that sweet finish line in my head and that rush of crossing.  Did some yard work last week and was in pain the next day so I called the doc with the hope I was being a baby.

During the exam he pressed on one side and everything was fine, brief minute I thought I’m fine! He pressed on the other side and I was seeing stars.

Yes, the "Dinner with Tri" road tour continues to be a really fun experience!  Had a great time enjoying dinner with @-OZ- last night ...could easily have kept drinking some excellent stouts and conversing through the night, but he had a family to tend to and I needed to rest up for:

David McKannon Memorial 5K Race, Huntsville, AL

22:34 (7:10/mi) ...1st in super-small AG and 6th overall (out of about 80)

It's the weekend, so there had to be a race in town, right?  7:00 a.m. start, so was up around 5:00 a.m. to get things moving and drive twenty minutes to the location south of town.  Definitely a small race as it was even manually timed.  Did a couple mile warm-up, tried to cool down in the morning heat/humidity, then lined up for the start.

Mile 1.  7:01 ...HR 157

I took over strong and felt quite good.  I saw a sub-7:00 avg page halfway through the mile and figured I probably would not sustain that, given the lack of high-end training and coming off a HM just a week ago.  The small crowd had quickly spread out, and I was running 8th.

Mile 2: 7:22 ...HR 169

It was clear that I wasn't holding a strong stride, so I just focused on cruising steady.  One guy passed me early the mile; soon after, I passed another guy who had stopped to walk.  I saw the HR was hanging in the high 160s, which is to be expected for a 5K.

Mile 3: 7:12 ...HR 175

We made a far turn just before the mile mark, so this mile was all heading back home.  I mentally broke it down into four sections and focused on clicking through each one.  The stride was starting to click again, so early in the mile I passed a guy and the #1 female.  I didn't happen to check the HR, but mid-170s makes sense as this mile was taking more effort.

.15 mile: 6:10/mi ...HR178

Kind of a weaving, slightly up-grade finish, but I opened things up and pushed home strong with big gaps between the runners ahead and behind me.

So nice to get out and race a 5K.  I clearly have some work to do to improve the legs, but that's my summer/fall goal.  Afterwards, had some good conversations with some of the other local racers.  No race medals!  :kicksrock:   Just a discount coupon for a local Fleet Feet.  I'll stop by on the way out of town and maybe use the discount for a new pair of shoes that I'll need at some point in coming months.

Man, another fun day.  Rested back at the hotel after the morning 5K, then toured the very interesting U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville ("Rocket City').  My reward for the AG win in the race was a coupon for Fleet Feet, so on my way out of town I stopped at the store and picked up a new pair of shoes (tacking on a recent Fleet Feet rewards discount as well).  Had a leisurely drive down to Birmingham on a state highway.

So great to have dinner with @Sandand the lovely and delightful Mrs. Sand!  We had the opportunity to meet for dinner 5-6 years ago (along with mrs. tri) as we both passed through Montgomery, so it was neat to comfortably catch up on family and life events since then.  Truly a joy.

Great dinner!  Much appreciated you looking me up and coming over.  Have a great trip.

@gruecd I see you're at Manitou!  I've always wanted to try The Incline!  Hope you have time to give it a go.

Edit:  Nevermind, I see you did it now!  Awesome stuff.  ❤️ the climb...

Short post here…….haven’t been running much the past 6 months.   Took a new job which is super intense and frankly too time consuming.  (Been to NYC at least 10 times and haven’t run a single time there yet ugh)

Anyway, in the meantime I’ve been having some weird muscle and joint pain, mostly in my right knee and right quad.  Rested it some, on and off.  Finally went to a specialist (after the 79th time Mrs APK suggested it).   His view?   Pre-arthritic knee.  Now, I’m not a doctor.  So zero idea how common this is.  He strongly suggested that I stop running…..particularly on concrete.   Doubles tennis?  Ok.  Basketball on a wooden floor?  Ok.   Running distance on concrete?  Bad.

Any FBG runners want to chime in here?   Doc suggested I go for PT for 4-6 weeks and see how the knee responds.  I hate getting older.

Keep running and focus on strengthening muscles around your knee.

Broken record here ...could an easy, fore/midfoot stride with a soft foot strike help?  A well-padded shoe could help, too.

Alas: Plans for a final dinner with @JShare87 didn't work out.   :(   My long drive time (and a time change I didn't originally factor in) didn't mesh with the timing logistics.  Add in a possible Covid exposure, and the smart approach was to not push it.  Very disappointing, as I would have enjoyed getting together.  All in all, though, still a memorable pre-conference trip.

I gathered from Strava and here you were making the southern swing on your travels. If you happen through Charlotte ever, give me a shout.

I’m no doctor but I’d highly recommend trail running, cycling and swimming.

Trail running - sure!

Cycling - maybe

Swimming - hell no

Side note.  Mrs APK made me take swimming lessons about 9-10 years ago when our kids were young.  She wanted me to “be a good role model” since I hate swimming and fear the water.

We live near Northwestern University, and our kids took lessons there from students.  Mrs APK has the great idea for me to find a swim instructor there too.  “Oh, he will be great.  His name is Brian, he’s a Junior on the swim team at NU.  The kids like him.  And wow, those swim team people are in really good shape, holy crap.”

Me:  “umm, I’m not comfortable with a male instructor.   Makes me think of being in a military school.  Can we find a female instructor?”

Her:  “sure, there is a girl named Alexis.  She’s not on the swim team though.  I’ll point her out at the kids’ lesson tonight.”

We get to the lesson.  Alexis is about 5’3” and in perfect shape.  Super cheerful.  Very hands on coaching style.

Me:  “meh, I’m not sure Alexis is the right instructor.  But I guess I’ll try it out and see.”

8-10 weeks later……I would have taken swimming lessons 7 days per week if possible.

:D

there’s a reason the best summer job ever was as a lifeguard and instructor.
knee rehab seems as good a time as any to get more instruction.

Got some possible good news today, hernia doctor doesn’t think it’s a hernia.  Couldn’t find a bulge(my wife has the same problem), sending me for mri to verify.  Thinks it is a severe muscle strain which is hitting the same nerve that a hernia would so mimicking the same symptoms.

no surgery would be awesome.  He’s pushing ice  and ibuprofen and no activity for 2 weeks and see how it feels.  MRI is scheduled for next Wednesday.
