21.38 - Jean Grae - Attack Of The Attacking Things - (2002)

After going with the greatest hits package for my last two, I'll get personal with this one. This one is a little-known emcee named Jean Grae from Brooklyn. She cut this in 2002, and it was her first full-length proper release. Wordplay abounds and her sick flow is only added to by her dopeness in content.

Hustles don't get knocked, except the ones that
#### with my business and dough, you can forget that
I told you once it's not gangsta, it's just right
Don't get it ####ed, I don't like to spit my #### twice
Keep your fake thuggin, afraid to get in fist fights
Glittery knuckles never made me shiver, buckle never
Knocka, this how I get down

Get It

Knock
niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

Just for the record, keep me on daytime skip during this week.  I've been trying to keep up with the thread itself but working off a VPN connected to my work and Youtube/Spotify basically kills the network.  This workweek is pretty busy and I have no actual cohesive draft plan so I'll pick when I have some unwind time in the evenings.

Going for another Soundtack.

21 - The Rocky Horror Picture Show - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1975)

One of our favorite things to do in HS...A group of friends would head into the city to Harvard Sq to see the RHPS with the FullBodyCast performing the show alongside the movie. Since we were 'sluts' (multi-time viewers) we'd sit with our props explaining to the 'virgins' how everything went. Once the show started, the crowd would rise and sing and dance along with the performers.

Remember it's just a Jump to the Left....

1. Time Warp
2. Sweet Transvestite

A great side memory from this show was when a friend who was driving home in his car that he thought was sooo cool, a mid 80s Mercury Lynx (little bit sleeker looking version of the Ford Escort) and we were passed by a Ferrari or Lamborghini or something like that. I told him to gun it and try to race the other car. They shifted out of second, and you could then see it's taillights getting smaller in the distance. My friend was utterly disappointed!
This is who I'm spending time in The Chamber with?  I need a new wardrobe.  And some toast.

Round 22 - Greta Van Fleet, From the Fires (2017)

Polarizing group. For me, this was summer 2018. I was at one of those big festivals in mid-May. Drinking beers with my buddies while the day time crews fired through their setlists with us not paying attention. There's a reason they're on the day time. But, these guys. They were something else. I've never seen a day time act grab the crowd by the balls like this group did. It was but steady progress, but a few friends and I eventually got others hooked. Then this album became my wife's jam for summer 2019. Bought us tickets to their show and she was entranced just like I was a year earlier.

So I get these guys rub some the wrong way with the Led Zeppelin cover band stigma they're trying to break free from. But we're in the my jams section of this. And these are my jams.

Safari Song

Highway Tune

Rsomething.

Elvis Costello / Get Happy

King Horse

Human Touch

Two of his albums may not be enough
Oh damn.

Delayed Panic mode pick to get some Elvis of my own. I have get happy and this one as my 1a and 1b.

20...Elvis Costello- Trust (1981)

Strict time

New lace sleeves

When I was 13, my family went on a bizarre but life changing extended four month vacation through Europe by car (1981). I think my dad may or may not have been on the run from something. Either way, I spent a lot of time in the back seat listening to 4 cassettes in my home made Walkman (a guy in a French electronics store sold me some headphones and soldered them to some kind of Jack that let me play my handheld cassette player through them...I swear this was before the Walkman came out). The cassettes were: Trust, Man Machine, Wish you were Here, and an as of yet undrafted that will remain anonymous. Loved this.

I like these guys and think they are really talented. But their “we’re really not emulating Led Zeppelin” stance has worn a bit thin IMO.

It's grammar night in the FFA DIAD.

Along with some great music, we are discussing point of view, bear vs. bare and the English language in general.  Welcome!

American Recordings - Johnny Cash (1994)

gb Rick Rubin for putting this all together ... he had Johnny for the better part of the second half of '93, and they layed down these 13 remarkably minimalistic tracks - taking the Man in Black back to his roots - just a legend and his guitar.

i love outlaw/rebel Cash more than just about any other sounds out there ... but this is such a compelling and gut wrenchingly gorgeous piece of work - it put him back where he belonged, and i'm very thankful for this gift they gave us.

intimate settings (Rubin's house, Johnny's cabin) and the raw pleasure of being stripped back down to nothing but the stark words and music ... a most welcome career resurgence from one of our truest American heroes.

the haunting weariness (at times) of his vocals punctuate the route he took to get to 1993 - it was a long and arduous journey, yet here he is - coming back in all of his glory.

couldn't be cooped without this one - so here we are ...

Redemption  penned by ex stepson-in-law Nick Lowe (there' that guy again, @northern exposure)

Tennessee Stud  recorded at the Viper Room - the ol' Lion had a ton of balls left 😎
