The Great 2020 All Time Television Draft: The Simpsons is judged the greatest show of all time (5 Viewers)

One was the Tortellis, which I’m pretty sure won’t be drafted.

The other was a pretty popular sitcom that could potentially still be drafted. I didn’t remember it as a spinoff, but there must have been some slight crossover in some side character (I think it was the same creative team).  Looking further, it wasn’t technically a spinoff, but there were a number of appearances from Cheers characters (usually as they were about to travel somewhere via plane - wink, wink).
Yes Tortellis was the one that should not be drafted.

I know the other one now. I don't think it was a spinoff, other than it's proximity to Boston - I was going to respond with it as another Norm appearance (Cliff was with him) but didn't want to spotlight. It's probably not a Top 16 sitcom of it's era but I did like it and someone may draft it.

Pretty sure I know the show you mean. Had to have enjoyed a favorable time slot, as it was a waste of some decent talent.

Hmm.  Color me curious.  Which selections were we furthest apart on and why?
I think I made a brief comment, but honestly don't remember all the rankings right now.  If memory is correct, I thought 3-4 of your bottom 5 were some of the most praised docs ever, and I thought only 1 of the top 5 was worthy of the points.  Different strokes and all.

I think you have an interesting mix to tackle here too, especially with the mix of movies vs longer mini-series.

Something got messed up.

My 1950-1970 leading man drama is listed as Robert McCall.  This should be in 1971-1990 leading man drama.

My 1971-1990 leading man drama is listed as  Kelly Robinson.  This should be in 1950-1970 leading man drama. (Not listed on category or by drafter either)

Thanks

40.5 1971-1990 Drama - Knight Rider
Love this

Knight Rider, a shadowy flight into the dangerous world of man who does not exist.

Michael Knight, a young loner on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless, the powerless in a world of criminals who operate above the law.

Saw a number of these cars on set during my tour of Universal  Studios in 1982.

Should be straight now on the Draft tab ... not sure about the By Category or By Drafter sheets, though.

It's strange to take over a draft.  Those first 13 picks by higgins, I don't think I would have taken any of them, maybe 1.

Just going to have fun the rest of the way.

Make-up picks:

39.14: AT&T "Joey Called [Reach Out and Touch Someone]", Commercial

This commercial was shown featuring various Bell Systems logos depending on what part of the country viewers were in. At the time (1981), AT&T still owned all the Bell properties, but had not yet been broken up.

The part in red below ... I remember that era. Long distance phone calls were not a casual thing. This commercial was the gentle nudge that got a pretty huge telecommunications ball rolling in American culture.

AT&T reached out and touched us with this vignette of an aging mother moved to tears by her grown son calling “just ‘cuz I love you.” Back then, “long distance meant bad news,” says N.W. Ayer’s Tricia Kenney. “We wanted to overcome that.” She also cops to a more hard-nosed motive: “We were preparing for divestiture. AT&T was a monopoly, but there was competition on the rise.” As in…MCI? -- Entertainment Weekly 3/28/1997
40.03: Big Brother, Reality Show

This show is pretty danged huge to be still sitting out there at this point. Not only has the Big Brother franchise been spun off all over the globe, a ton of other reality shows have mimicked the "dumb games for advantages" format. Hugely influential in its genre, and for television in general -- for better or worse. A heckuva lot of us are voyeurs at heart.

Rd. 40- Lydia Grant- Lead woman in Drama 1971-1990

"You've got big dreams? You want fame? Well, fame costs. And right here is where you start paying ... in sweat."

Debbie Allen was nominated for the Emmy Award for Best Actress four times during the show's run. She is the only actress to have appeared in all three screen incarnations of Fame, playing Lydia Grant in both the 1980 film and 1982 television series and playing the school principal in the 2009 remake. Allen was also lead choreographer for the film and television series, winning two Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography and one Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy. She became the first Black woman to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy.

probably get 1 point because most of the focus is on main sports, but...

40.02:  JOE ROGAN - (sports play by play)

Started getting into UFC many years ago, and I honestly have learned a ton just by listening to Rogan's commentary and him talking technique and strategy.

Isn't he more of the color commentator than the play by play guy?

This is one of those times I wish I knew how to make the bigger sized fonts from my phone.  Yo Mama selects:

NORM!!!

39.16 – Norm Peterson – 71-90 Supporting Man

Norm was one of only three characters (Sam and Carla) to appear in every episode of Cheers.  He also appeared in all three Cheers spinoffs (yes, there were three).   Norm even made appearances in St. Elsewhere, The Simpsons, and The Family Guy.  Iconic character.

Norm was so well known throughout the Boston area, he received his trademark “Norm!” welcome at his favorite eating establishment The Hungry Heifer, his local bowling alley, and even rival bar Gary’s Old Town Tavern (he goes there on Christmas when Cheers is closed).  Frasier’s baby son’s first word is actually “Norm!”

Norm was always quick with one liners, many at the expense of his weight or his wife, was always only at the bar for “one quick beer” despite being there until closing most nights, and had to have his bar tab calculated by NASA.

“It’s a dog eat dog world, and I’m wearing Milkbone underwear.”

“What’s shaking, Norm?”   “All four cheeks and a couple of chins.”

“Terrorists Sam.  They’ve taken over my stomach and they’re demanding beer.”

“What’d you like Normie?”   “A reason to live.  Give me another beer.”

George Wendt was nominated for six consecutive emmys for this role.
My uncle was a regular at the Bull and Finch Pub in Boston, the model for the Cheers bar, and looked a bit like George Wendt. He used to get asked all the time if he was the inspiration for Norm (he was not). Eventually he and pub management did a promotion where he had a sign that said “you can ask me if I’m Norm if you donate to the Jimmy Fund” which is a major cancer charity in New England.

Play by play usually just describes the action and the color guy explains the why's and strategies of what is going on.
Bascially it's just him and another dude the whole time.  They talk about the fight pre and post, and also describes the action during the fight.

I'm not arguing to argue or anything, I just didn't know if that would work for a play by play guy.

ETA:  and watch so little sports that was the only idea I had left..

I honestly don't know wtf the difference would be.  There are no plays in MMA.
MMA took a LOT of explaining in the early days. 20 yrs ago i would put it on the bigscreens in my poker room at the request of some customers after the real sports were over and, i tellya, it looked like gay soft porn to me for the longest while. i'd put some volume on (which poker rooms rarely do) if the room was empty enough just so folks wouldnt freak at the freakin

36.12. The Waltons - 1971-1990 Drama
Write up:

The Waltons won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series in 1973. Also in 1973 Richard Thomas won the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Michael Learned won the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series three times (1973, 1974, and 1976). Ellen Corby was also a three-time winner in the Supporting Actress category, winning in 1973, 1975, and 1976. Will Geer was awarded the Supporting Actor Emmy in 1975. Veteran actress Beulah Bondi won an Emmy in 1977 for Lead Actress in a Single Performance for her guest appearance as Martha Corrine Walton in the episode "The Pony Cart" (Episode #111). She first appeared in The Waltons episode "The Conflict" (Episode #51) as the widow of Zeb Walton's brother.

The series itself earned a Peabody Award for its first season.  In 2013, TV Guide ranked The Waltons No. 34 on its list of the 60 Best Series of All Time.

Edith Bunker from All in The Family watches The Waltons

The Waltons are spoofed on The Carol Burnett Show.

In college dorms, people would stop what they were doing on the night it was on, at the time it was on. They'd all gather in the lounge, where the only TV set generally was. And they'd watch "The Waltons" and sometimes laugh, sometimes cry.

Good night ,John-Boy
