Great live band (I'm sure you've said you've seen them too). I saw them at Wayhome Festival in '06 or '07.
Speaking of... I've decided that today is the day I set myself up for heartbreak by diving headfirst into the Bonnaroo lineup. I have had tickets all along (with Steve Tasker, Unialias and our usual crew) but between my job stuff, vaccine rollout and the border, I haven't let myself get into it at all.
But I told them the dates in talking about the job yesterday, they announced I can book my second vaccine a week from Monday and surely the borders will be open (and with zero quarantining) by September, right?

Oh, I've never seen them live. To be honest, the first I'd really sat and listened to their stuff was for this. But I can see where you would think that. I hadn't missed them entirely, just never given The '59 Sound a total listen. I haven't made it through the album yet, but I like the odds and ends they do acoustically. I find those to be more palatable and actually grittier than the sort of polished Side One Dummy sound they had going. I didn't find them even remotely punk at all until hearing the gravelly voice over the acoustic guitar. And their lyrics remind me of the Swingin' Utter$, so they're not the first (nor finest) oi/street punk band to write those emotive, bar scene-influenced, sort of punk rock outcast lyrics.
As far as Bonnaroo goes, September is optimistic, but one can hope. Cross fingers for continued health and getting back to normal. The COVID variant-bearers killed a confirmed, fully vaccinated woman in Napa the other day. That doesn't seem to bode well for opening back up fully, though it's eventually going to have to happen regardless. Which gives me a chance to write my Beastie Boys dissing Bonnaroo verse:

Charming, a mack
Calm and attack, bombin' 'em back
With an open palm and a pimp slap"
But then years later you was always against that?
What you fix to prove -- nothing sticks to you?
Flies to flypaper like Bonnaroo chicks to you?

Yeah, a ton of Interpol songs too. The Hold Steady have surprisingly few NYC references, considering they're a "Brooklyn Band"

Also, "New York City Cops" is so much better than "When It Started". I get why they had to replace it on the US release post-9/11 but it's so so good.

I never thought of The Hold Steady as a BKNY band (though they very well could be considered that or could consider themselves to be). Isn't Craig Finn really Minneapolis the way of Springfield, MA, though? I think that's where he cut his teeth. But his band may have cut its own teeth in Brooklyn, so I'm really just spitaballing about the SPFLD, MA thing, because he nails Western Mass when he writes about it in song.

Craig Finn has lived in Brooklyn for 20+ years and that's where they formed. He definitely writes more often about the Twin Cities, Tampa/Ybor, Denver and Massachusetts though.
