49ers jump up to #3 pick in draft

I think New England gives up a second round pick for Garoppolo within minutes of the 49ers picking.

that aside, I agree with The general premise of of your post. ;)

I don't think NE has the cap space to take Garaoppolo - they would need to starting releasing some players or getting creative with extensions.

They may do just that.

Can't remember what I posted where, but trading Gilmore gives them almost enough cap space to add Garoppolo. They could also get SF to agree to convert some of Jimmy G.'s 2021 salary into a bonus instead. That would reduce his cap number for this year for NE (and the cap hit and payout would go against SF instead). Bottom line, there are ways to get something done, but not without other logistical things to happen first.

But they wouldn't do it for QB3? I don't get what you're trying to say here.

I think most NFL GMs right now feel pretty safe in saying picks 1-3 are QBs at this point.

I really have no idea what you are talking about but you let "it would be something" get way too much air, relax ;)

I think Xavien Howard and Mike Gesicki are both on Miami's short list of players they will part ways with if need be in possible trade scenarios. If they draft Pitts at 6, I definitely see them trading Gesicki to say Dallas for their 2nd Round pick this year and then maybe something on top in 2022. Howard whines about wanting more money and again Miami could slide back and position themselves to take Surtain and trade Howard who would fetch a lot I am assuming.

Mostly local radio buzz down here.

I don’t see why Miami would take Pitts when they have Gesicki, only to deal Gesicki away.

Why not take a more pressing need & stick with Gesicki?

Pitts graded out as a 7.19 on NFL.com. They only have data from 2011 on, but the only TE rated higher than Pitts in those 11 drafts is Kyle Rudolph at 7.50. Tied for third are OJ Howard and Hunter Henry at 7.00. Gesicki earned a score of 6.40. The point being, some people feel Pitts is the best non-QB available in the draft this year. If MIA feels they are getting the next Travis Kelce, it might make sense to draft Pitts (although I tend to think that MIA could be better suited looking elsewhere and the hype on Pitts is getting a little out of control).

Not so sure about that… I listened to the same press conference you did, and my only lock of a take-away is that they are taking a quarterback.

Well, the most striking thing to me during that presser was Shanahan continually saying that we're getting a new starting QB, so it's probably safe to say Jimmy is done in SF. It's not in their best interest to cut him though.

We'll see Thursday, but it sure seems to me like Mac is going to be the pick. I'm kind of just preparing myself emotionally at this point.

He was saying they needed to be better at backup because JimmyG was hurt so frequently.

I don’t necessarily believe that means Jones

worth noting: Fields also qualifies as being capable of stepping right in.

Oh, the DVR is set to record what seems to be a very dramatic 1st round of the draft. I’m looking forward to it, if only because all these QBs and WRs going early means some really great D prospects will fall to the Raiders....which they will promptly ignore and reach for someone unexpected as always. 😐

Kyle Shanahan said he and John Lynch are not paying attention to what draft experts and 49ers' fans are saying the team should do on social media. "It is so irresponsible to let something like that affect your decision."

Sounds like Mac or Lance are a lock.

David Woodley took the Miami Dolphins to a Super Bowl in 1982, didn't stop the Phins form taking Marino in the 1st Round the following year in '83.

-There is an underlying issue that nobody wants to talk about and that is "What if Tua isn't the goods?" So hard to lock up the #3 pick in any NFL Draft, even for the Phins they haven't picked in the Top3-4-5 very often. I hope they didn't make a mistake, think about how Arizona moved on fast from Rosen, hope the Phins didn't pass on a QB at 3 the likes of the guy they passed on for Tua last year, would only make things worse.

I bring it up mostly because what has this regime which takes ownership over the drafts since 2016, what have they really accomplished and they keep kicking the can down the road, it's always future 1st and 2nd round selections. You gotta hit on the ones you have in your hands and not a lot of folks are very confident in any of their 3 1st round picks from a year ago. 4 more on the way in the Top 50.

If Pitts is worth a Top5 pick, he's got a lot more upside than Gesicki who is solid and will fetch a decent return if they traded him. Miami could go 2 TE-Set, have no idea what their plan is. Wish part of it were getting a solid running game going but so far it's been spare parts mostly. A better OL performance would help change things.

Drafting Mac Jones Would Jeopardize Kyle Shanahan's Career

Quote

Mac Jones is once again being linked as the favorite for the 49ers at No. 3.

The reality of Jones becoming the new quarterback of the 49ers just grows stronger and stronger as the NFL Draft is just a few days away from now.

Trey Lace is also being linked as a second option for the 49ers to draft, which would be the wiser pick to make instead of Jones. However, Kyle Shanahan calls the shots in San Francisco. His infatuation for Kirk Cousins could be made anew with Jones, and all of Shanahan's talk about physically gifted players being ideal at quarterback goes out the window.

The very moment the 49ers take Jones, perception of Shanahan will change as well as the heat on his seat. Drafting Jones over Lance or Fields would make scrutiny and criticism of Shanahan at an all-time high.

Shanahan would be jeopardizing his career should the 49ers draft Jones.

His career as the head coach of the 49ers will be put under the finest microscope. Anything he does and what Jones does will be forever linked, including the careers of Fields and Lance. These two players must not have better playing careers than Jones or else Shanahan will look like a fool.

All of his past errors, like the 2017 draft, will continually be brought up. Shanahan will have proven that he is still the same ole' coach that loves his stiff quarterbacks. I would like to believe that Shanahan has matured and grown some since he first took up the head coach position.

Then again, even the brilliant coaching minds do not have a great eye for evaluation talent and making personnel decisions. Should Jones not reach Pro Bowl caliber status, or the offense hits similar snags as it did with Jimmy Garoppolo, the time will start ticking as the head coach.

If Shanahan drafts Fields or Lance, his leash weakens. He will be allotted plenty of time to allow these players to grow because the draft capital given up to move from No. 12 to No. 3 will be justified since he is taking a player with gifted traits that you can't coach.

However, should Shanahan be able to make Jones into a stud and the 49ers succeed, he will and rightfully should be revered as a genius. I just do not see it as a very likely scenario as opposed to taking Lance or Fields. In a way, taking Jones is almost like "career suicide" for Shanahan. His job will be put on the line more heavily. Should Jones fail, Shanahan will have to be content with an offensive coordinator position down the line since he'll assuredly be fired if that is the case.

Jones is not a terrible prospect. It is just that the cost of getting him is terrible. Then again, for all we know, this all nothing but smoke to people outside of the organization.

Thursday cannot arrive soon enough.

I've just accepted the fact it's Jones. The evidence is overwhelming at this point.

This trade is completely incoherent to me now, especially since they were allegedly ready to offer the same deal for Watson before the allegations came pouring in. He said there were five QB's he was comfortable with in the draft, so what was the urgency to get to #3 so soon?

I guess it was all just happy talk the entire time, and this entire process was a waste of everyone's time and energy.

It really is strange to the max. Trade up to 3 when you have a list of 5? Who the hell does that?

obviously the fact that the pick was made available for trade.

NFL teams offering picks aren’t like Safeway offering broccoli.

You make it sound like the Niners coulda sat around & at any point decided, “ya know what? I feel like some broccoli. Imma head on down to Safeway & pick me up a 3rd overall pick while I’m there.”

the urgency of making the trade is inherent to the NFL. Had the Niners not made that trade, some other team would have.

Regardless of who the pick is, there’s really zero mystery to the “urgency” part of your rant.

Now, if they take Jones it means they moved up specifically for that reason. But if they don’t take Jones, your entire rant is wasted energy. We’ll find out in a couple days if it’s Jones or not.

I have said before I thought they could move to 6 & get Jones, Lance or Fields, but again, we’ll fine out on Thursday.

Personally, I think that was just happy talk.

It seems to me what happened was they were dead set on drafting Mac Jones from the beginning, but they just decided to set up second pro days with Fields and Lance as smokescreens for their own fan base.

Could be Atlanta didn’t take trade offer. And they got worried waiti;g until a trade with Cincy since they liked on 4 QBs. To be honest, I only really like 4 QBs and have Jones in a tier lower. Not that my opinion counts. Could be Cincy wouldn’t deal either. Cincy should deal IMO. They could get a premium with a trade down.

I completely understand why they did it. I just find the process to be perplexing. Shanahan obviously believes Jones is one of the ten guys on the planet that can play QB in the NFL at an extremely high level. However, when I consider the fact that Kyle passed on Mahomes and Watson, I question his ability to identify blue chip QB talent.

If the reports are to believed, the entire scouting department is practically begging the man to draft Lance. Maybe it will be Lance, but I doubt it at this point.

Hard to trade down when you are getting the best non-QB in the draft at pick 4.

Sounds to me like the front office wasn’t as set on Jones as Shanahan is, and at least forced him to do some more due diligence.

I don’t think Shanahan genuinely has a list of 5 he’d be happy with.

Niners fans freaking out about Jones should listen to Simms’s scouting report - he’s been making the podcast rounds the last couple of weeks. Who knows if he’s right (he’s got a decent track record in a small sample size), but I think he’s at least fleshing out what Shanahan is seeing in these prospects.

I actually think he's the second best prospect left after Lance. Lance is going to be really, really good. At least, in my opinion.

If Jones didn't already have a dui, and a beer belly at the young age of 22, I could understand it.

I keep reading too that the 49ers have ruined the board for the other teams wanting to trade up because they gave up so much to get so little.  They have set the trade bar way to high and no other sane team is willing to pay that kind of penalty to move up

There is no doubt this is a make or break move.  Put me strongly in the camp that the coach and GM will be gone in 2 years and the 49ers will be a disaster for a decade because of this move.

ATL should take Surtain, as he would solve a lot of their defensive problems (which has been way more of a problem than the offense has been). But they would probably take Pitts (who IMO is starting to get a bit overvalued at the spot it will take to draft him).

The Falcons have already paid Jones $23M of his future salary (between this year and next year) whether he is on the team or not. I am guessing finance and accounting will review this with ownership and they may not be so quick to move him. As mentioned elsewhere, in a depressed cap season, there are only a few teams (maybe 3?) that could take on Jones' contract and still be under the salary cap. The time to trade him was at the start of free agency when more teams had money and cap space. A trade could still happen, but I would say the chances are very low.

As being discussed in other threads, the WR is so deep this year, there will be a ton of dirt cheap receivers available in the middle rounds with high draft grades. They won't be viewed as good as the Top 3 guys, but the drop off is nowhere near what it will be at many other positions in the draft.

I think the 9ers overpaid as much as the next critic, but the bolded is just pre-draft coach speak and doesn’t mean anything at all IMO.

Why not?  They need serious help on defense.  I would assume they’d be picking high if they go offense or don’t trade back.

Here's the part that doesn't make sense to me... if in fact the FO wants Lance, but Shanny wants Jones... then why would the FO even bother to pull off a trade to 3 to get a guy they don't even want?

It's unlikely the FO thought highly of Jones, but then changed their minds since the trade. It's also unlikely that Shanny was ambiguous about which QB he wanted at the onset, then started pounding the table for Jones post-trade.

IMO if you replace Mac Jones with Justin Fields, then all the media narratives suddenly make sense. The problem is a debate between Lance and Fields doesn't generate nearly as many talking points. Conspiracy theory? Perhaps, but sometimes the most obvious answer is the right one.

This is a very likely scenario... watching Jones I see a day 2 talent. The elite accuracy is completely overblown, there are plenty of underthrows to wide open guys that he gets away with at Alabama, but are picks in the NFL.

FIFY

Picturing an unwashed, scruffy-3-day shadow of a patchy young guy beard, flies buzzing around a disheveled Mac Jones, who’s just wishing to be picked, or for a merciful death, or a baloney sandwich or something.
