GM's thread about nothing (4 Viewers)

I have an opportunity to do a temporary lucrative assignment in Houston (not with my company). Would delay Nicaragua move for a couple of months but not long (the move date was a "target" anyway). I'm kind of fascinated with Houston due to the Mexican food but I think I'd probably hate the city. Thoughts? How close would I be to Albert Oaks?
A couple of months is about the right time to spend in Houston. Just make sure they're the right months. July-September are NOT the right months.I've been here just over 20 years and am currently plotting my escape. It's a fantastic city economically but it is not a particularly pleasant place to live. It's still better than anywhere north of Dallas.Plenty of culture and entertainment. Great museums and galleries. Frequent Broadway shows. As RFW will tell you, more underground poker rooms and clubs than you would ever imagine. The local music scene is tough, but all the touring acts big and small come through. We don't support local music well so they all move to Austin or become cover bands. Although I hear we are an epicenter for rap now.Very little Mexican food. Lots of Tex-Mex, and it's excellent, but the true Mexican fare isn't served here much.If you can swing living in a cool neighborhood near your office I would recommend it to limit the commute. The commute is brutal here. If anyone tries to tell you to live in Katy, Clear Lake, The Woodlands, Sugar Land, or any of our other mind numbingly homogenized suburbs find someone else to take advice from. Austin and the Hill country are roughly three hours away.If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

This. Houston is a pit. I grew up in the woodlands and even the niceness of that area is undone by the weather, the traffic, and the concrete everywhere. There are some good arts things. And some good places to eat. But stay somewhere that negates any commute and plan to leave soon.

Lots of :lmao: :lmao: on this page. I thought the swedish fish thread was an old bump, it hit 8 pages in one day??
I'm just not getting the love for that thread.
It's partly the hilarious responses, partly the way MOP stumbles at the gun, then proceeds to trip and bumble his way through the thread. I didn't really get the love over nipsey's cartoons; they're nothing compared to Truck's work. But the rest is great.
You didn't like this?
Did you know that AquaFresh Tarter Control was actually just the original AquaFresh? They didn't know it controlled tarter until 8 years after it's release. So they took an ingredient out and called the new recipe "AquaFresh" and the first recipe became known as "AquaFresh Tarter Control".
I had to pinch my testes to counteract my laughing in the office.

Thanks to you two and the others. This is helpful. I like that there are cool places like Austin relatively close. As mentioned, it would be a temp thing. No way would I consider moving to Houston permanently. But in this case my living would be paid as well as a very nice wage, so it's tempting to build a slightly better nest egg and delay Nicaragua for a couple of months. Presumably they'd pay for me to live close to the office, but I don't know details yet.

The other problem with Houston is it isn't near anything. The space center is good for a Saturday and Austin is 3 hours. Otherwise you are looking at Dallas (3.5) or Nola (7) or San Antonio. (4.5). The nearby beach is a slum, east texas makes west Memphis look like manhattan, southwest of Houston is empty. There is really nothing nearby. If the job is inside the loop you can probably tolerate it for a couple months. But under no condition should that be between July as September. You will be wondering why you left hell-job for the Houston summer climate.

My mother, with whom I've had a very tumultuous relationship over the years, nearly brought a tear to my eye today when she said she was picking up the tab for Pickles Jr. to attend college. The heart is often three sizes too small, but when it comes to matters of her grandson, it's enormous. She loves that little guy more than anything in the world. At least we have that in common.

Pretty awesome, brohan.

You know, if her checkbook's still open...

Wow, that's so cool. :thumbup:Watch that she doesn't drop him on his head a lot in hopes of community college, though.

Whoa, that's...that's incredible! Meanwhile, my sons' 529s are growing like a desert rose.

Disagree 100%.And Nipsey originated cartoon strip shtick, I'm a mere disciple.

If I promise not to poke her, can I send your mother a friend request?

:lmao: at the Houston hate. It's not bad at all. Yes, the summer months are hot and humid, but you're not working outdoors, are you?

Nicaragua I'm sure can get humid too.

You do want to be close to work, that's true, but I'm also sure you will be maximizing earning potential for a few short months, and besides that, it's not in your nature to leave work at 5pm. I have zero issues either early or late.

And yes, plenty of vERy good food, including Mexican.

Send a PM to bigbottom, he knows the law community in town, so can probably give insight. I know oil/gas/tech if you need help with that.

I'm sure she'd be thrilled to have another buddy.

My biggest issue with Houston, both as a resident and from afar is that nothing is near anything else. You can't walk to a good bar or restaurant from reliant. Minute maid to a good spot is a trek. Saturday night out with friends requires a DD and planning if you want to to go to more than 2 places. Shopping even down by the galleria requires loading up and driving from one place to the next. It's like the entire city was laid out by oil executives who said "this is gasoline country and by god we are going to use a lot of I!" The airports are near nothing. The museums are near nothing. Even walking between the hospitals in the med center feels like walking between the casinos in Vegas where every block lasts for half a mile. Blah.

How close are their BBQ restaurants?

The position is at an oil and gas company. I'll be in touch when I know more. :)
Had a phone conference with some Houston-based oil/gas folks tonight, but most of their underlings are in Singapore. I have two good friends from my grad school group who work in the oil/specialty chemicals industry, and both are currently living in Asia. At this rate, everyone will be living in a foreign country working for a U.S. company.
