Orange is the New Black - Netflix series (1 Viewer)

5 episodes in. No desire to watch more than one episode per night, like with some shows where you can't wait to see what happens next. It's clever but not exactly riveting.

I am digging blondie though. She is hot.

Show is more silly then anything. Not exactly a comedy nor drama. A few hotter chicks wouldn't hurt given it's all woman in there. The Mexican mom is like top 3. Track girl is pretty cute in flashbacks.

it feels very much another show from the creator of "weeds", which was fun and clever sometimes but too often annoying.

hate the opening and credits, in between was very good for the first several episodes and then it lost it's steam.

Still waiting for Pablo schreiber from the wire to get cooked by red

To each his own, I guess. I really like the title sequence, especially the song.

Though, I don't think I was much of a fan at first, but it grew on me over the course of the season.

I could care less about title sequences. This one seems fine, doesn't bother me. Weird thing to fixate on. Good show so far. Just finished chicken episode.

Nice piece in the Washington Post. Slight review on Orange, but mostly how it compares with actual prisons (some spoilers)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/07/17/orange-is-the-new-black-is-the-best-tv-show-about-prison-ever-made/

Apparently, Orange got the demographics right, some prisons do have Yoga (including the one Kerman went to, led by Yoga Janet), and Virginia prison actually did try the "Butch Wing" thing.

Great Huffington Post review up through episode 11 (SPOILERS).

I might be the only one that knows who this is but the actress that plays Yoga Jones was the voice of Patti Mayonaisse.
You think you're the only person who watched Doug? That's a good catch though.

I saw this available last Friday and finished the season by Sunday night. Very well done, and I'll be around for season 2.

I really dislike the main character and how selfish she is.
So you think this series would be better if she was not selfish?

It's these flaws that make characters more interesting, not less.
Yea think you missed the whole point of her character. There would be no show if she wasn't so self absorbed.

IMO she's not supposed to be a sympathetic character, but it builds each episode.

I understand what the show is supposed to be and how a bad girl can go to prison to turn good (in a very basic sense) but that doesn't mean that they didn't have to build a more sympathetic character from the start. To each their own however.

Morello reminds me of a young Marissa Tomei.

And good pull on Yoga Jones being Patti Mayonaise.

8 episodes in here, really liking it so far, except some of the characters are a bit over the top (Pornstache, Pennsatucky)

Yeah, Pennsatucky's the biggest weak spot on the show (though the actress plays it well, and she's worth it as a means to an end).Pornstache is a complete caricature, but think there could be something there with him if they just dial it back a little bit. They can keep the ####-rammin' awesome 'stache and the Camaro though.

Good, not great. Will watch when it comes back though I really dislike the main character and how selfish she is.
The main character and her fiancé make this show painful at times. Nothing new for this creator though. Weeds was full of selfish, stupid people.

Just finished episode 10

Holy Crap! I really hope Pornstache dies a slow twisted death for all the #### he has pulled especially what he just did to Tricia

It's a chore watching this show. I'm only powering through because the critics love it, but I don't see the genius.

Most of the time I'm only listening while browsing stuff in other tabs.

 I just finished the last episode. I thought it was pretty good. It's gets a little to "soapy" at times but it's solid overall.

Needs more nudity. Or an annoying kid who eats breakfast a lot.

They way Chapman evolves (or devolves, actually) throughout the show was really well done. I guess you could also argue that she was always bad/selfish/etc but hid it well.
Yeah, very well done with that.

Just finished watching the 1st season. I really enjoyed the show. I'm looking forward to season 2.
Spoilers for Season 2

I was looking on Wikipedia about the show and Taryn Manning is signed on to be a regular for Season 2.

So I guess Chapman didn't kill her at the end of the episode

Yeah, I don't think Tucky dying is much of an option. Adding a bunch more years onto Chapman's sentence would just change the show too drastically.

I'm guessing she gets some time in the SHU another 6 months to a year.

I'm also assuming she was smart enough to chunk the screwdriver up on the roof pretty quickly. Though, I guess that clearly wasn't on her mind when the season ended.

Also one other question

Was the woman that Piper was talking to real when she was in SHU? I don't think so, but I am not sure

Two episodes in with my girlfriend, and we both enjoy it.

If I read through the thread am I going to hit spoilers?

Not many, but I think there are some.

Usually, it's clear what episode someone's on in a post.

And there's not a ton of stuff to really be spoiled until really about the last 3rd of the season.

Spoiler speculation:

Did Piper's fiancé's dad (the attorney) push her towards a 15 month plea, knowing that she likely would not be convicted based upon evidence? ... I've got a feeling season 2 will go in this direction.

You should be fine at this point - it's mostly "I'm x episodes in and I like/don't like it" posts. I'd skip any of the links though.

I finished up season 1. Took me a bit to get into it because I could figure if it was trying to be comedy or drama or what. Not going to get specific, but the last 6 episodes really sealed it for me and I thought it was great. The flashback scenes and overall tone of the show really kept me intrigued as it went on.

9/10

This would be better set in the 70's or some time when surveilance camera's are not EVERYWHERE. In Jail's and prisons today there would be no way to get away with the stuff they are doing like sneaking into closets. Plus then you could have a cool soundtrack.

Yeah, the 2nd half certainly picks up. Particularly, the last 3 episodes.

I love the way #### just starts to unravel from Larry's interview on. The interview was great.

And regarding the brother

He doesn't get much screen time, but upon re-watching, he seems to be a bit of a clue to what we'll eventually figure out about Chapman: That she's a narcissist that's probably not worth getting involved with. From the beginning, he seems to care the least about her going to jail. Most I'm sure is his entire attitude on life, but I'm sure, as her brother and possibly the one that's known her best throughout her entire life, it's clear the charm of Piper Chapman wore off on him a long time ago.

I hope we get a lot more of the brother (Cal?) next season in general and maybe some of what they were like growing up together. I assume it's a longshot they'll work any of that in though.
Speaking of the Chapman family, I think the Chapmans and Blooms (outside of Cal) were a weak spot of the show. Maybe it was that they just didn't have the time to explore their characters more (completely understandable), but they pretty much just threw out some stereotypes, tried to get a couple of cheap laughs and called it a day.

If they will be involved next year, I hope they try to make them feel a little more real.

(And I wouldn't be surprised to see something involving Mr. Bloom purposefully encouraging Piper to take the deal, even though he migh've been able to get her off, but that's just a guess).
