And sorry to be serious for a minute, but, honestly -- if you haven't seen the vids from Queretaro last night, just don't.

I couldn't fall asleep last night and had to go for something heavy to stop the images.  I normally don't watch that kind of thing -- so I'm probably a lightweight -- but it might be the worst video I've ever seen.  Even writing this I'm getting anxious again.

Alves got caught ball watching and pulled into the middle, allowing the space for the forward to get behind him and score.

DEST IN!

Its strange seeing this Barca team still lining up Pique, Alba, Alves and Busquets but no Messi. I guess Alves took a bit of a sojourn for a few years, but otherwise they've been there game in and out forever. I can't believe Busquets is only 33. It seems like these guys should all be deep into their 40s.

Yes, not the first or the last time I'll parrot Doyle.  He didn't mention, however, that Ramsdale has largely been excellent in distribution this season, so this morning was an aberration.

Its so much his wheelhouse, he can't help himself anymore - MLS guy moves to Europe and you know he'll be banging that drum now every game.

he can't help himself
This.

I have such a love/hate thing with him.

Anything MLS-related is fluffed up to impossible levels -- competent offensive plays opposed by high school level defending are a particular object of his affections -- but then his deep analysis and eye for the game are often superb.

I am 95% sure this started years ago to parody just how insanely ignorant Euro snobs can sound and yet I think now he has fully morphed into believing everything he types.  I guess when you run schtick for so long it becomes a part of your persona.

Horror in Mexico (fair warning -- there are dead people in some of these vids)

Atlas and Queretaro fans fight -- at least three dead.

ETA:  I took that link down.  If you scroll far enough there are possibly videos of people being killed.

sounds like the security was complicit and local govt trying to sweep this away
Fyi....from Reuters. (The bolded doesn't make me feel very confident, tbh...but I generally accept Reuters reporting)

-----------------------------

The governor of Queretaro state, Mauricio Kuri, said some probes had been opened for attempted murder.

"Even though there are no deaths, we can't say this isn't a tragedy," Kuri told reporters.

Neither government nor league officials addressed what might have triggered the clashes, which were condemned by both the Queretaro and Atlas teams.

Officials said people who appeared in photos lying on the ground, some covered in blood, were alive and being treated in hospital. Kuri said in a video on Twitter that some social media and news reports about victims who died from beatings at the stadium were false, adding that he had "no reason to lie or hide anything."

I love him constantly poking the bear, whether it’s schtick or not. It was just a hilarious and perfect tweet for Doyle to already be positioning himself for next season when Turner is at Arsenal.

Reuters is just reporting what the governor said (I think?).
Yep. But elsewhere in the same article...no mention of fatalities. Also possible that officials are hiding the truth from everybody and the news outlets

The brutal attacks among spectators during the Queretaro-Atlas match on Saturday sent 26 people, mostly men, to hospital with three people in critical condition.

Mexico's soccer league also said it would pursue sanctions, without detailing who might be held responsible or what the sanctions might include.

I'm sure it's still shtick.  And it's glorious.  My all-time favorite was during the Nations League group stage when he pointed out the Richie Laryea shut down Pulisic in the first US/Canada matchup and Pulisic had a good game in the second where the US won 3-0 with Phonzie starting.  Doyle kept on the "Richie Laryea is the best Canadian LB" shtick for like two weeks.  It was just perfect fishing.  Like the Jerry Rice is not HOFer thread at the old yellow board.

McGuire is so ####### bad - just take the ####### off and tell him to go back to Leicester.  #### off Harry!
He has brought everyone around him down.

I get that there are places where you might let the ball run instead of playing it, but that's not one of them.  He has to put that out.
United is so bad at corners maybe he felt there was more danger coming from a corner then a ball sitting on the 6?

United has so many issues.  The biggest one is the lack of positional awareness from McFred.  Great work rates but they constantly are out of position and leaving holes in the center of the park that get exploited.  City basically went 4-2-4 and as soon as McT went ball chasing, KdB sat in the space and had plenty of fun.  And Maguire being so poor makes it even more glaring.  At some point a manager needs to sit Maguire down and let someone else play.  Even with Varane out, you have Bailley and heck, even Jones at this point.  Maguire gets such a pass by the managers and is always there, no matter how bad he plays.  I just don't get it.

and a day later... still the same WIDE discrepancy between MSM and less reputable/social-media. no deaths, 3 critically injured vs 17 deaths.

and I still genuinely don't know which way to take it... leaning the latter based on a distrust of the Mexican officials.

THE CHAAAAAAAAMPIONS!!!

and

THE concacaf CHAAAAAAAAMPIONS!!!!

today.

I see Liga MX postponed their league game today... so it's curious that Leon is playing tonight (vs MLS struggling SEA... NYC vs Guat team).

there's was a lengthy segment on ESPN about this yesterday, covering a lot of angles including the general populous historic distrust of government figures for deaths. liga MX supposedly coming up with punishment today... but still keeping it at 0 deaths, 3 critically injured.

Wilder's return to Bramall Lane not quite going as he'd have liked right now 😀

edit - of course as soon as I say that they pull one back

I saw the crowd for the NYCFC CCL game in Conn. tonight and I was like "wow, fabulous crowd" until it hit me.  90% of the crowd were Guatemalan fans cheering for the opponent.

SEA should've had 5 or 6 tonight, and might end up regretting not putting more past Leon when they go to Mexico on the return leg. Ended up 3-0...not bad.

Roldan was my MOTM. All over the place on both sides of the ball from MF to runs into the channels to defending everything single play and combining on plays going forwward. Two assists and drew the PK, and a yellow. Pretty backheel in the box that completely unseated the Leon defense and led to a goal scoring chance getting cleared off the line.

Morris had a goal (could've had three or more), and generally looked good. More importantly, looked fast AND quick.

And Seattle was missing its two top players, Lodeiro and Ruidiaz too.  Very impressive result.  If they can find one goal in the return leg, they should be through to the semi's.

Not sure.  Lodeiro plays a very advanced attacking midfield role, pretty much an old fashioned 10, and Ruidiaz is a pure striker.
Huh. I just saw that Roldan was positioned higher up and wider than normal (he was so all over the field, I couldn't really tell what position he was playing)... so maybe he slots back to the DCM spot Vargas played and is replaced by one of those two.

Any SEA people here who know better? Amazing that Vargas got PT at all as a 16yo (even though I think someboyd here had posted about him prior to the season as a guy to watch)... but now I'm getting greedy and want him to get regular minutes.
