⚽ Soccer Match-day Thread (5 Viewers)

Let me be the first to say I have no complaints about Fellaini's play today.

Very few teams are going to run by 3 of the 4 United defenders.  Pogba, Martial, Mhky, Zlatan are going to be fun to watch.  Bailly too.

anybody watching Sweden vs Germany for "gold"?

funny- I was just wondering when the US was going to play for bronze... and then remembered. looks like canada beat brazil for it- good for them

eta: would be cool if Honduras can get by Nigeria on the mens' side to bring back double hardware to CONCACAF

I'm watching it (hate-watching it is probably a more apt description).  Started off as pretty entertaining as the Swedes made an effort to get forward early on, creating a few chances early.  Germany has had some good chances, should have finished at least one of them (as I'm typing, they just put one away from the top of the box).

Watched a good bit of the bronze medal match too.  Good back and forth match.  Brazil just didn't really show much creativity in the final third, and Canada punished them for their mistakes at the back end.  In watching this tournament, I think it is pretty apparent how much mileage is on Marta's tires.  She still has incredible skills, but you could see that she was lacking the top end physical gifts to take advantage of the opportunities her skills would create for her.

ETA:  Sweden scores a nice goal to cut their deficit to 2-1 in the 67th minute.  Game on.

If there are soccer gods, they will have Sweden lose this match to Brazil on an own goal that occurs after the keeper makes a save that rebounds off one of the fifty-three defenders Sweden has stationed in the box.  God, I hate watching teams park the bus.

Of course, Brazil could help things by actually showing some creativity in their attack.  Too many long shots and predictable crosses against defenders six inches taller than them.

Also, I wonder how many threads this post qualifies for - I can think of four off the top of my head (this one, soccer, Olympics, and Olympic chicks).
:oldunsure:

own goal

I personally thought ManU looked very shaky on defense and gave up loads of space to Southampton.

Its early days, but Fellaini and Pogba in the middle isnt all that great from a defensive standpoint.  Once they play a team with a shred of offensive ability it will be interesting.

But you honestly couldn't have asked for a better opening script for ManU.  Bournemouth, Southampton and Hull City may end up being 3 of the bottom 5 offenses this year, then ManU gets 2 weeks before their first real test against Man City.

I think Fellatio will do just fine defensively, & the whole reason Pogba is there, is to relieve defensive pressure via his attacking intent/qualities.

Over/under on the number of penalties called on corners/free-kicks today?  Almost seemed like the ref was told to call those penalties in the City/Stoke game.
