⚽ Soccer Match-day Thread (7 Viewers)

Unin/Fire are at 1 all but Chi is down to 10 men after an intentional kick to Bedoya. Fire have been throwing a temper-tantrum since the just PK for a Handball in the box. Since then the Fire have been playing out of control. The RC happened after this. Numerous questionable challenges from CHI in terms of intentionally injure or dirty play here. Won't be surprised if we see at least 1 more Fire sent off in this match

Andre Spiderman Blake is coming off as Joe Bendik former Tor keeper in. Blake seemed to injure his right hand on the goal post. Not sure if he severely jammed it or what. But he stayed in for at least 10 mins

And stoppage time is 8 mins with all of CHIs time wasting and antic

Jakob Glesnes almost with another howitzer from the dead ball spot. Fire player lucky he got his head out of the way too as he would've been decapitated

Union win one of the ugliest games in MLS this season. 37 combined fouls 7 yellows and 1 RC. with Tor loss PHI sits on top of the Supporter shield title

I'm going to give Ole some credit here as it appears he has been reading these threads and hearing for a clamoring of a need to adjust tactics.  And like that, against PSG, he plays 3 in the back and grabs a 2-1 away win.  Against Chelsea he switches it up again, and honestly the draw was deserved, but United had the better of the high quality chances (Maguire take down in the box aside).  And then they play the Bundesliga leaders and switch it up to a back 4 with a shallow diamond and a DvB doing all the heavy lifting around the pitch.  They didn't start Fernandes and Rashford and still really took it to RB Leipzig.  Pogba was very good as he didn't have to bother with high pressing, Martial DvB and Greenwood were really active. Pogba didn't have to fight for possession with Fernandes and drove forward with confidence.  This was the similar player to what was at Juve when he was paired up with the likes of Vidal.  Leipzig is a quality side, and save Sabitzer who was subbed on, played their strongest lineup.  This was a tricky match for United and again, different formation, different players and it was great.  I really liked the way Lindelof played as well.  Now with Arsenal coming up this weekend, hopefully they can carry this momentum to the league so they don't get relegated.

Poor Morata with not 1, not 2, but 3 goals VAR'd vs Barcelona.  I didn't see any of them, but a) I hate Barcelona and b) I bet on Juve  and c) I absolutely loathe VAR so it was not a great result.

Watched PSG/Istanbul game and that was fairly entertaining, although LOL at comparing Neymar to Pato.  May as well throw Robinho in there too.  Although it seems Neymar is often hurt, he's been unbelievably prolific while out there and will more than likely end as Brazil's all time leading goal scorer.  He had 181 goals/assists in 186 games for Barcelona, and has 117 goals/assist in 96 games for PSG.  The guy is still a tremendous player.  Speaking of tremendous, M'Bappe is simply phenomenal.  I'm pretty sure if there is any one player in the world I'd grab right now, it would be him (I know I'm really going out on a limb there).

Oh, it was nice to see the Insigne brothers get goals in the same game this past weekend too.

:goodposting:

Ole is going to need to solve the teams that play with a low block if they are going to challenge.  Also maintaining consistency and high level of play every game.  Depth helps with that.

RBL made the mistake of pushing high and gave United and esp Rashford room to run in behind.  Lower level teams won't do that.

He also has some ability to rotate now too.  And the differing formations are going to allow different combos to get on the field and not make it easy for a team to plan for them.

Arsenal on the weekend & Beshiktas next week  will go a long way to helping both competitions....

Sterling feeling it today.

And wow is Timmy bad at doing commentary. He knows stuff, and says it, but I want to stab my ears when he talks.

Of course the United arsenal match is in bull#### peacock extreme or whatever the hell they're calling it.

NBC trying REALLY hard to kill casual interest in the sport

edit: ok, so it looks like MAYBE its on regular Peacock (which I guess you can watch for free?) over Peacock extreme ripoff?

Still wish I could just watch on my TV rather than having to download another ap.

edit: nope- premium required. #### you NBC

Exactly.  Looking at the games this year you would need CBS, ESPN, NBC, and FOX to watch most of the great soccer going on.  Perfect.  Just get a cable subscription right?  Nope. You need to pay extra for each of their special streaming services to watch most of those matches.  Only another $30+ a month or so all told.  Complete BS.

Some random thoughts here

Well, I give Ole some credit and what does he do?  ####s the bed next match out.  Was pretty obvious that Arsenal was the better side on Sunday and his reluctance to adjust tactics sealed their fate.  I just don't get why they sign van de beek and not play him but in a marginal role.  I know United are not the only one's that make #### decisions, I mean they sign Phil Jones to a 4 year extension LAST YEAR and he is not even on the squad ffs - I know Arsenal spent like twice as much on Pepe and they don't have Ozil on the squard, but Ole is not doing a very good job here, imho.  And Cavani, gah. Why bring in Igaholo and then sign this old cat who misses more opportunities than anyone in the world.

Morata has put the ball in the old onion sack 5 times his past two times out.  Each one has been VAR'd for offside and only one has stood up.  With CR7 back, I doubt Morata gets much more opportunity to play.  McKinnie looked good this weekend too, but I always take that with a grain of salt as he's playing for one of the best sides in the world against a newly promoted team.  There was tons of space available in the midfield, it will not often be like that.

Some late show magic out there over the weekend.  Lazio, Feyenoord, Valencia - all good stuff.

Napoli losing to Sassoulo's "b" side at home was a disgrace.  Inter needing a late Perisic goal to draw Parma at home, not much better.  Looks like serie A will be Zlatan and Juve.

Barcelona has managed just 2 points in their past 4 La Liga games.  But, they managed to beat Juve in champions league and are catching a major break in their next match in that 13 first team players for Kyiv will not be able to play due to injury and/or covid.  Okay, maybe not that major, but if anyone likes to gamble on soccer, Barca -2 is a pretty good punt.

Oh, you know who has the best road record in Europe's major leagues right now?  Cadiz, because of course they do.

PSG lost their first two games in La Ligue if you weren't paying attention.  Now, they're 2 points clear in first place after Lille drew a 10 man Lyon team, and have a 23-3 gd in 9 games

Ajax were down to Fortuna Sittard 0-1.  Of course they won, 5-2 because all they do is score and they have a 29-5 gd in just 7 games.

Such a debacle of a game.  Arsenal deserved the win but did just enough.  They werent much better.

I never liked the diamond MF, no width.  I actually was hoping Cavani would come on for Pogba at half time and go back to the 4-3-3.

The players just showed no intensity or drive in this game.  Everything is done slowly.  I have visions of the manager in Bull Durham "We loligag around the park, we loligag with the ball... Whats that make us?  LOLIGAGGERS!" Some of these guys need to be dropped to wake them up and realize they need to perform.

Watching Partey play, I am more upset they didn't sign him.  At this point, sell Pogba, teach McGuire to play faster, buy a DM and a CB, Play VdB and Bruno in attacking roles and go 4-1-2-3...

The one thing Lindelof does better then McGuire is pass and dribble with pace.

United deserve 15th.  (side note, Barca is in 12th?!?!?) Sadly, Ole is going to get sacked and the cycle starts again, mostly because of Pogba, but all the players are letting him down.  As did the board.

Some interesting items to think about in regard to Ole.

Found here: https://twitter.com/sensibleutd?lang=en

#mufc managers win% (1st 100 games)
1. José Mourinho - 62%
2. Ole Gunnar Solskjær - 56%
3. Louis van Gaal - 52%

Ole has 2nd best record of all time while being hired for a long term rebuild & is just 6 wins shy of a manager hired for instant success
Oh & lastly: 5. SAF - 48%

#mufc managers win%

1. Sir Alex Ferguson - 59.67%
2. José Mourinho - 58.33%
3. Ole Gunnar Solskjær - 56%
- Jose was hired for instant success - Ole was hired for a long term rebuild Yet he's just - 2.3% off Jose - 3.7% off SAF 3rd best % of all time This is an excellent return.

Sir Al didn't exactly inherit a billion dollar team. His wins, I'm sure, are heavily weighted later when he had developed and brought the players in. But I could be wrong.

I think Ole and TSO are more apples to apples. And neither seem to have gotten/be getting the most out of whatever players are wearing red on the day. Ole's inconsistency of product might be fixed over time....but I haven't seen enough from his tactics and player handling to feel that confident about it. You hear players like Auba talk about Arteta, and see what they're trying to do consistently on the field (even if it doesn't always work), and I see that squad and coach ving more of a future.

If Inter lose this, I'm blaming the zig-zag stripes on their new kit (and that really dumb back-pass.)  Like Juve messing with their classic black/white zebras this year and last, and Barca wearing pink last week, this is scandalous for me.  They should be prohibited from making major changes to the classics.  I'm shaking my fist at the sky watching this debacle.

Took Sir Alex several years, the creation of the EPL and a Cantona to start winning.... Then it was nonstop for 20 years.

Neither Ole or Jose seem to get consistent backing of the board, or play from the team.  Reports indicate the culture of the club under SAF is returning and players seem happy to be there.  Ole protects his players.  Jose was toxic and threw everyone under his bus at one time or another.

I think Ole sometimes over thinks his tactics or works to hard to involve certain players when they might not deserve to be.  He also seems to try and change them for each game and be unpredictable, but I think that just causes confusion some games.  His player rotation and sometimes his subbing needs to improve.  But sometimes when you look down the bench and see not much....

Probably going to get one of these, just deciding on the player.

Easiest goal ever.  Everyone forward for a United corner, ball cleeared to the forward (Demba Ba) all alone for the breakaway

1-0 Basaksehir

The fun of the passing and moving by Mata, Bruno, and Vdb is instantly killed when Matic or McGuire get the ball.

SOMEONE TEACH MATIC TO PASS TO HIS RIGHT

Halftime. 2-1

I would take Mata off and put in Greenwood.  Not because of the givaway leading to the goal, but the lack of balance in the side when he is on.  Everything ends up down the left.  Rashford hugs the line, mata is in the center, Matic only passes left, no attacking threat on the right.... go to a 4-1-2-3 and get the goals.  If needed, you have Pogba and Cavani able to come on.

I don’t even know what position Mata is playing, quite possibly he doesn’t know either.

Mata is playing the Mata position.  Same as it ever was, same as it ever was.  Typically hes the right sided attacker but his movement takes him anywhere and everwhere.  Its why as good as he is he cant play the right, causes a lack of balance.

and now Matic and Mcguire are your CB pair.

With a part time right back position for Mata as well :headscratcher:

Frank Lampard has confirmed Kai Havertz has tested positive for Covid-19. As a consequence the player is now undergoing a period of self-isolation and is not involved in tonight’s Champions League game versus Rennes

What a crazy upset.  Sorry BMav and other ManU guys, but that's pretty impressive for Istanbol.  Their first ever UCL victory.

They worked hard for it, and were gifted two goals by poor united defensive play.  But they deserved the win.  Love it for Rafael, hate it for Skrtl.

Same story for United, no urgency with the ball, slow ball movement out of McGuire, Shaw, Matic.  Lack of balance in the formation and play.  Pogba trying to do to much.  McGuire taking the ball from Fosu-Mensa so he can dribble slowly up field.

I do not like the 4-4-2 diamond Ole has played the last few games.  Yes it worked vs Lepzig, no it didnt work vs Arsenal and Istanbul.

Card-a-palooza in Chelsea today... including a VAR decision to give a penalty and second yellow to a Rennes player that in no way shape or form was deserved.

Pretty terrible.  I get that's the letter of the law, but it's definitely not the spirit of it.  Feel bad for Rennes who was playing very well all said before that.

Can you imagine if this was not Covid?  Those crowds are nuts in the most mundane of games, imagine the insanity if that stadium was full?

I was watching, but with the sound off.  Clear handball right?  But you're saying the yellow was undeserved?

Handball yes.  Yellow is the official rule, but given that it wasn't intentional and it was his second it was unfortunate.  Like I said.... letter of the law, but not the spirit.
