I'm all for guys missing an unstoppable PK rather then getting it saved -- hit it hard enough and try to put it somewhere the keeper has no chance. And Salah does that most of the time. So it goes.

Pains me to give him credit after being wound up in the first half, but the ref noting the inadvertant handball by Gakpo but not blowing the whistle was good reffing.

Makes it easy to call back if they score immediately after, but doesn't stop play for something unintentional. Love that.

Liverpool much the better side tonight. Real's not dead until the stake is in the heart and the sunrise turns the body to smoke, but this has been one-sided.

2.23 (inc the PK) - .91 on xG (and almost all of that .91 was the PK). ETA: Fotmob tells me 1.44 to 0.12 outside the pens.

Justin Kluivert enters the history books today

First player to ever score three PK’s in an EPL game
First player to ever score three PK’s in a top flight game in England away from home

Can't think of another truly great player that gets less respect from the refs than Salah. He's constantly being held, kicked, pulled down with no call. He just had his shoe ripped off by someone's studs with no whistle.

xG: Liverpool 1.53 - 0.07 City. Could easily be up 3-0 at this point.

Nice win by United, although some credit to Everton for being poor in attack.

Up next? Arsenal, Forest, City. Plus another Europa match and a LC at Spurs.

Big test for the new manager.

Anyone playing fantasy Futbol in the EPL needs to start SAKA. United seem to think Malacia at wing back and Maguire as the left of a back 3 will be able to stop him.

Malacia has played 45 mins in the last 1.5 years and Maguire is, well, Maguire.

Despite Arsenal v United today I feel the most compelling game is in Manchester where Nottingham Forest will try to extend City's unbelievable winless streak to eight games across all comps.

Can't argue with that. Several games worth watching for a neutral. Also add in Newcastle hosting Liverpool.

Room for newbie EPL fans with dumb questions in here?
Bring it.

I haven't watched an NFL game in about a decade and have drifted to watching more baseball in my old age. I also noticed I would like watching random matches on Saturdays with Peacock the last few years as I woke up. I was talking to an EPL fan at work during the summer and he said I had to pick a team and dive in to enjoy it more. Team picked before the season (Spurs) and now I've managed to watch all their matches and usually one or two more random ones during the week. I read a book on Ange, I THINK I understand this bananas cup system going on, so now I just have to start to understand the sport and offenses more.

@TennesseeJed

He needs a rundown on being a the Spurs fan.

Eg... Why spurts?
I knew f-all about teams and history. I just wanted: a funny name/logo, a team I hadn't heard of (I figured less bandwagon accusations if I didn't do Man U or Chelsea), a team that isn't such a bottom feeder that I risk relegation and not being able to watch them next year, and a rivalry would be a bonus. That's where it landed.

Sure - WTF are they doing on the field and how and I understand the nuances of the offenses?

WTF Antony. Do not get cute there, shoot the damn ball.

Goals on two corners for Arsenal. I have long hated how corners are defended these days. Not just by United, in general.

Unfortunately, the co-worker is a bit annoying and also is a huge Spurs fan, and I had 0 clue. He has been filling me in every shift now to everybody else's amusement.

That is a much larger question than you think :lmao: And sometimes I do not think they players on the field understand "WTF are they doing on the field and how and I understand the nuances of the offenses"

Here is what the AI has to say about how Spurs approach the sport

====================

"Ange" (referring to manager Ange Postecoglou) typically likes to play a very attacking style of football, emphasizing high pressing, quick passing, and a focus on dominating possession, often described as "total football" with a high line defensively, meaning his teams try to play aggressively and create chances by constantly moving the ball forward and looking to score goals early in the build-up play.

Key points about Ange's playing style:
  • High Pressing:
His teams actively press the opposition high up the pitch to win the ball back quickly and initiate attacks.
  • Fluid Movement:
Players are encouraged to interchange positions frequently, creating confusion for the defending team.
  • Quick Passing:
Emphasis on fast, accurate passes to move the ball quickly upfield and create scoring opportunities.
  • Wing Play:
Often utilizes wide players to stretch the pitch and create space for central attacking options.
  • Positive Mentality:
Encourages a positive and attacking mindset, even when defending, looking to regain possession quickly and transition into attack.

Did AI mention all the hardware and the cheapskate owner?

I kid. I think Spurs are a perfect team to glom onto. They're good, but never win... So if/when they do, you can be one of those long suffering fans who finally got to see it happen. And it won't be because they spent unlimited amounts of money.

Plus, they usually play a pretty decent style of soccer to watch- so even as a neutral, they're a fun watch.

Thanks. I also watched a youtube video explaining Angeball, and I went a bit crosseyed. Something about fullbacks being used more in the midfield and freeing up other players to move and create while pushing forward? Not sure if I got that remotely right, but more what I am saying is that is exactly what it looks to me like all the other teams are doing. Lol. Once I start understanding this even a fraction better I will start to like it even more.

Ange reminding me of Belichick a bit and that makes me laugh (Pats fan). I knew nothing about him or this team as I said, so that made it seem like a fit as I learned more. Kulusevski became a favorite right away, and I even have a Spurs podcast I listen to now. I'm on my way!

I think what you are referring to is what the modern game calls a False Fullback. Let’s check in on the AI again so that I don’t need to type :)

=======

A false fullback is a football tactic where a fullback moves into the middle of the pitch to play towards the opposition's goal. This tactic is often used during build-up play.

A false fullback is characterized by the following attributes:
  • Versatility
They can defend well and contribute to the attack. They may have the technical skills of a midfielder, allowing them to participate in passing sequences and take shots.
  • Positional awareness
They need to read the game to decide when to drop into midfield, overlap with wingers, or stay back to defend.
  • Tactical flexibility
They can adapt to different game situations, acting as an additional midfielder, a wide attacker, or a third center-back.

The tactic can be important for:
  • Exploiting gaps in the middle of the pitch
  • Drawing the opposition's defensive midfielders or center back out of position
  • Managing the defensive transition
  • Stopping counterattacks

Some successful teams that have used the false fullback tactic include:Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Tottenham
