Quick question: is there such a thing as a mercy rule in European football? Spurs might be needing that vs PSG.

Got my DAZN account all set up and there’s no Giroud.
LAFC fans may tell you he has yet to show up at all
To be fair, I thought he played quite well and hard when he subbed in.

Great comeback for LAFC. The game was poor for most of it but the extra time was very entertaining.

We get another big Liga MX vs MLS match up tonight with the Champions Cup final between Vancouver and Cruz Azul.

Closest thing I’ve seen is when Iker Casillas asked the ref to blow the whistle at the start of added time against Italy.

Rumor has it Spain v France's Nation's League match was unbelievable.

And despite him inexplicably getting more international matches, Michael Oliver did nothing weird in the game.

At least in the Bundesliga, and some other comps, they will blow for full time exactly on 90 minutes rather than play the full stoppage time if a team is getting destroyed. Frankly this is nothing more than spot fixing, but it is what it is. Not that I'm speaking as anyone who bet on the German women's team to score the next goal against Austria at half time or anything like that

It was a decent match. Spain was up 5-0 IIRC so not much excitement until the end when France made it respectable.

In terms of importance, how does this Nations League tournament rank? Seems below World and Euro Cups but I'm not very familiar with it. Is it relatively new?

In its region, the Importance is bigger than a friendly but lower than probably anything else real (WC, Euros, WC qualifying).

Nations League as a concept started back in 2018 in Europe.

If I remember correctly, they wanted to give more meaning to national team games during international breaks that were not qualifying matches for the Euros or WC. So they created the Nations League and attached qualifying seedings to it. This way these matches would be taken more seriously and their stars wouldn't skip as many games.

IMO all it has really done is added more stress to the top players and not allowed teams to play any youth and find the next stars.

It is an upgrade on the meaningless friendlies countries were playing previously, but almost as irrelevant

I must be an outlier.. I prefer the meaningless friendlies during actual FIFA breaks. A chance for coaches, players, teams to try **** without consequence. Putting honus in to have to win games and competitions... Distracts from growth for teams and focuses on the results

I mean it adds some structure and meaning, but it is primarily a big thing for those teams on the fringes of WC or continental cup qualification, whereby Nations League finishes might see them get an additional chance at progressing into a major comp. A game between Spain and France where they're both qualifying should absolutely be treated as a friendly and see them experiment with whatever the heck they want. If they don't, then that's on the coaches, not the format.

I agree with you to a point, but when you add meaning to a game, the coaches need a win so they call in their top guys. The format still has some affect.
