2012 Packers Offseason (1 Viewer)

Anyone catch the McCarthy press conference this morning (live, twitter "live blog" or read the transcript)? He sounded VERY focused and I think camp may be more physical and he will be more demanding this year.
He better be. Best record in the NFL and being one and done in the playoffs is not something to be proud of. I'd still be embarrassed if it were me.

Luckily he won a ring the year prior, so that might mitigate some of that embarrassment.

By the end of the season, mark my words....Cobb will be wr #1 for GB. Jennings will be let go and Cobb will be taking over. This guy is Steve Smith 2.0. Everyone is talking on how he is going to blow up, but assuming that talent is kept in back of perceived pecking order. That does not happen in pro sports. This is guy who simply knows how to get open and make people miss.
As if you don't spew enough BS in the CFA thread in the FFA?Jennings let go?Remind me never to take anything you say about the Packers seriously.I think he takes the #3 spot by the end of the year. But he won't pass Jennings or Nelson.

 Yeah, well it isn't you. But anyone who is embarrassed by losing to the Champs needs help. They had a fantastic season. Just ran into the hot team.

Well....o.k....I'll take your advice and stop posting on this site or the FFA...I have been considering that shark pool material has been incredibly weak over the last year and especially leading up to this season and all of this arguing against the idiot liberals over there is sort of a waste of my time. I'll come back and start a new account if Jennings is let go or Cobb takes over #1 and relentlessly badger you until banned though, so watch out!It has been a pleasure....

That post was pretty ridiculous. Cobb is not going to be the #1 WR on the Packers after this year  There's also no way they let Jennings walk, or that Cobb overtakes Nelson. The Packers work extensively on managing their cap so that they can afford to keep their core players together. Rodgers, Matthews, and Jennings will all sign affordable extensions in the next three years.

I do find it interesting that people cap Cobb's talent at a point somewhere below Jordy and certainly below Jennings. I'm not sure he isn't going to pull a Victor Cruz and just barge onto the field by force of will and skill. Sire his competion is stiff but he may just evolve this entire offense another revolution. They haven't had a player like Cobb. He has a different skillset. The last guy they had like him was Sterling Sharpe. And even he isn't a great comp.

Without question Cobb has talent and he could be a very good payer, but you can't even begin to compare the situations between NY and GB. The level of talent vying for catches is sooo much higher in GB and it's not just one or two guys.

You have a good point but you're discounting how much time it takes to completely learn the Packers system and to play all of the positions. It is also not possible for Cobb to be a true #1 because of his size, so he will never be number one WR on any team. Just like Welker will never be a true #1 WR, even if he's the best "fantasy" WR every year. People often mix the terminologies up. The best Cobb could do is take over the #2 WR spot and I don't see that happening in the next year - people don't give Nelson enough credit. Cobb is similar to Welker and Harvin, in that he will be a rock star in the slot. I can't wait for the offense in 2013 when those are our three starting WRs and we draft a second round RB =)

Charles Woodson lining up at Packers safety

By Gregg Rosenthal

Around The League editor

It appears Charles Woodson's much-discussed position change is happening. The 15-year veteran lined up at safety with Green Bay's base unit to open training camp on Thursday, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The release of Charlie Peprah on Wednesday by the Packers makes more sense now. Peprah started 15 games last year, but wasn't that effective and he underwent knee surgery this offseason.

The Packers will likely tell us that Woodson's role might not really be changing much. He already played some safety from the slot in the team's "Corner Okie" package. The Packers also like rookie Jerron McMillian from Maine and second-year pro M.D. Jennings, who will compete for snaps. When the team went to their nickel package Thursday morning, McMillan entered while Woodson went to the slot.

Still, this is a shift for the Packers. They want to get their best defenders on the field, and that will happen by lining up Woodson next to Morgan Burnett at safety in the team's base package. Jarrett Bush and Tramon Williams lined up at cornerback. Some other notes from early Packers practice:

Second-year running back Alex Green practiced with the team and "did everything." That's a great sign in his recovery from knee surgery. The team is hoping he can step up into the team's backup role.

• Brad Jones lined up at outside linebacker after lining up inside during the offseason.

• Isn't it awesome to have football updates again?

Talent rises and to put a ceiling on what Cobbs talent is right now is premature.

Don't go - we need quality owners like you in our FF leagues to make it easy for us.

Wes Welker has been the true no.1 WR on the Pats. Harvin is the true no.1 WR on the Vikings.Santonio Holmes is the true no.1 WR on his team. Cobb and Welker are not similar. If you're looking for a comparison he's closer to Santonio Holmes/ Percy Harvin. To think that a player can't be the no.1 option in the passing game because of their height is insanity. Just like a runningback has to be 220 pounds to be the workhorse. Your terminology is out-dated.

They have been running reverse's with Cobb. Harvin could be closest comparison if anyone needs one. He has unique talents the team should take advantage of.

Alex Green could do a lot this year too. McCarthy likes how he hits the hole at close to full speed.

You’re still not getting what I’m saying mate. #1 option in the passing game and the #1 WR on a team are different terminologies. Welker was not the #1 WR on the Patriots – that slot belonged to Deion Branch. It doesn’t matter if Branch caught zero balls last year. The position on the field is the #1 WR. This distinction is the name of the position that they play, like fullback, halfback, tight end. Welker is not and will never be a #1 WR. I don’t know how to explain this any better. Pick up book on position terminologies in football.Cobb is in the same boat. He will never be a #1 WR on any team. That is not a position that he can play.

Jermichael Finley's wife: Packers TE had concussion

By Gregg Rosenthal

Around The League editor

Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley was missing from practice Friday morning for an undisclosed reason. And then his wife Courtney disclosed it on Twitter.

"(Jermichael) got a slight very mild concussion at practice yesterday protocol is to sit a few days," Courtney Finley wrote, according to Aaron Nagler of BleacherReport.com.

She then also said he was feeling fine and raring to practice again, but you can't find these notes because she quickly deleted the information.

Teams do not generally like wives disclosing injury information, especially concussions. (And can we please eliminate the term "mild concussion" from our vocabulary?)

But this is an interesting case to watch. Teams are not required to disclose injury information as regularly in training camp. There might be more pressure to sit a player in the regular season if we know he had previous concussions in camp.

UPDATE: Credit Packers coach Mike McCarthy for fully disclosing Finley's injury. He will be out a couple days with a concussion, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

15-1 and an early playoff exit = fantastic? Yeah, maybe for Vikings fans. :lmao:

Nothing wrong with criticizing the coach. McCarthy has been very vocal about criticizing himself for how abruptly the playoffs ended. 15-1 is a great regular season, but the playoffs left so much to be desired. McCarthy realizes that and I think it's great and love reading and hearing about him being more motivated this year.

What did I have to do with this?

Keep seeing great things on Cobb.

Shields having a rough camp so far...Rodgers has picked on him a few times.

DJ Smith was in at LB in the dime...not Hawk. Not totally surprising as Hawk was not in the nickel at times in the past...and that is usually Bishop's spot in the dime and Smith is technically Bishop's backup.

Still wanting to see what comes out of House and Hayward at C and McMillan/Jennings/Woodson at safety.

Who's headed to Family Night?

Green Bay -- Monday morning's practice just wrapped up at Ray Nitschke Field. With the team's annual Family Night scrimmage Friday, things will ramp up this week. It was an up-tempo practice today with plenty of 11-on-11 work. The only injury Monday as to undrafted tight end Eric Lair, who was being examined after practice. The hip injury Mike McCabe suffered Saturday is not as serious as originally feared, Mike McCarthy said, but the coach added that the team won't know his timetable for another "3-5 days."

We'll get into practice specifics later, but here are a handful of highlights from McCarthy:

--- The competition at the No. 2 cornerback spot is shaping into a three-horse race between Jarrett Bush, Davon House and Sam Shields. Shields bounced back with a better practice Monday, while House was impressive with an interception and another break-up in the end zone while defending 6-foot-4 Tori Gurley.

"I think they are all in the picture," McCarthy said. "(House) had the big interception there in the red zone. He's doing things very well in the drill work. But I think all those young guys need to continue to grow through install faces on defense, and on offense, as we get all of our schemes in and all of that. But these guys need to play in games. That's where the playing time will come.

"I think they're all involved. I think they all have a chance. We haven't played any games with Casey. Davon has come on strong at the end of the year. You could see that, particularly on the scout teams, and he was active there for a few games. So he's made a big improvement in the off-season and he's off to a good start."

--- As opposed to last season, the Packers should have some options along the defensive line in 2012 to generate more pressure. With two rookies and three new veterans -- even though two will open the season suspended -- the position group is full.

"I'll say this," McCarthy said, "we have a lot more depth. The competition there has been as high as it's ever been in my time here."

--- There's no debate right now that James Starks is the team's No. 1 running back while he's healthy. That's the key with him, McCarthy reiterated Monday.

Green Bay needs Starks to avoid injuries this season. And also, he needs to continue making the right cuts near the line.

"James is very talented, very athletic," McCarthy said. "He's a bigger back that can do a number of different things. He can play both inside and outside so he just needs to continue to grow and really be more consistent in his run decisions, which I think he's doing a much better job of -- particularly in the padded practices that we've had Saturday and today. He just needs to take that next big step and he's had injuries. His availability is probably his biggest challenge."

From what i've read Casey Heyward is in that competition as well.

I believe Heyward is as well. All things considered, it would be better if he could be worked in during the season though and not start week 1. I like the DL depth but only if that translates to "talented depth".

Not even close and Jennings will still be there.

Yeah...wanting to see if this really pushes Woodson more to S full time except some dime situations.

Roll down the window....AND THROW THE CRACK PIPE AWAY.

House got the 1st team reps today. Some more positive news on DJ Williams - hopefully he pushes Finley. Looked like a few more nagging injuries as well.

Packers Training Camp: McCarthy’s Post-Practice Highlights

By Zach Kruse on Jul 31, 2012 with 4 Comments

Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke following Green Bay’s fifth training camp practice Tuesday. Some highlights from McCarthy’s post-practice presser:

Defensive end Ryan Pickett suffered a knee bruise. He was on the sidelines during a good chunk of Tuesday’s practice icing the injury. UDFA RB Marc Tyler had a shoulder bruise and rookie DE Mike Daniels was getting his knee/groin looked at following practice. No timetables were set for any of the three players.

Speaking of timetables, McCarthy said he thinks WR Greg Jennings (elbow) can return for Wednesday’s practice. He also speculated that LB Desmond Bishop (calf) and FB John Kuhn (knee) might be ready by the end of the week. Bishop and Kuhn have yet to practice during camp.

McCarthy was impressed with S Morgan Burnett, who he called one of the Packers young players “ready to step into the forefront.” Burnett had his most impressive practice of 2012 Tuesday, with a number of turnovers caused in 11-on-11 drills. Heading into his third NFL season, Burnett may be ready for a breakout season.

It’s beginning to sound like a broken record, but McCarthy again praised (when prompted) CB Davon House Tuesday. McCarthy said House’s body type is well-suited for bump-and-run coverage and that he is playing off that strength early in camp. “Definitely a different player this year,” McCarthy said. Sounds more and more like House is being groomed as a player much like Al Harris was during his time in Green Bay.

McCarthy said that CB Sam Shields was getting better with his technique, but that it still needs improvement. He still relies too much on his speed. No surprise there. Shields still peeks into the backfield too often and, because of that fault, gets beat on double moves.

McCarthy praised WR Donald Driver, who clearly had his best practice of 2012. The veteran pass-catcher hauled in at least three touchdown catches during 11-on-11 drills, including one in the two-minute situation. Barring a catastrophic injury, Driver is making this football team.

Other Notes

Seventh-round QB B.J. Coleman gave some good looks Tuesday. He clearly has all the arm talent necessary to make it in the NFL, and he proved it with a couple of laser throws to the far hashmarks. There was also another sequence where Coleman stepped up in a crowded pocket and delivered a completion into a tight window. Small steps to be sure, but encouraging ones, too. He has a bright future.

Tight end D.J. Williams continues to catch everything thrown his way. So far in camp, he’s gotten his share of looks in the passing game.

Two rookies—safety Jerron McMillian and linebacker Terrell Manning—might have had their most active practice to date. McMillian had at least one pass-breakup while playing near the line of scrimmage, and Manning was everywhere during a stretch with the No. 2 defense.

Jermichael Finley had a couple of nice catches in his first day back from a concussion. On one touchdown, Finley motioned out wide and had no problem hauling in a short slant route from Aaron Rodgers for the score. M.D. Jennings, the man in coverage on the play, didn’t have a chance.

The Packers return to practice Wednesday, in full pads, at 8:15 a.m. CT.

You're not following what I'm saying. Your terms and methods are outdated. This is a different NFL.

I've heard similar, but that Heyward is taking the job outright.
