***2013 Chicago Bears Offseason Thread*** (1 Viewer)

With all the value that was sitting there. Either trade or take LB, TE, or Floyd. I am not impressed.

Flapgreen must have jump off his balcony. Got very quiet.

Long may have been a decent pick if they had traded down and got him. I am very curious about what is going on with Floyd. At least the Bears are serious about rebuilding this line. I think this pick demonstrates that Carimi is a total bust.

Dear Phil: If you're going to reach for an OL project, you might as well have taken Menelik Watson. At least it wasn't Teo!

Funny how everyone's reaction to this draft pick is the same as last year. "WTF!" There's not even a reason to go further into it than that. Successful teams draft well.

Man...I was thinking to myself YES! We got Eifert. Hell, i would have been happy with Floyd even if it's not a need. I thought we were here to draft the best player.

Instead, we get like the 5th guard with the 20th pick. I hate myself right now.

Prediction: Long will be our new (old) Carimi at RT. Probably will bust and move to OG, just like Carimi, but at least they are trying to fix the OL!

I now know what it must feel like when Santa leave's you nothing but a lump of coal.

Wait all year for Christmas to come, send your letter to Santa, and you get nothing but a piece of ####

I don't think Long is an awful pick. Had the Bears not taken him he probably would have been taken at the end of the first or early in the second. But it reminds me of last year when they reached for Shea. They could have gotten the same guy much later. This draft is so strong in the second, third and fourth rounds I would have loved to have seen the Bears trade down and pick up a third to replace the pick they lost in the Marshall trade. Now let's see if they can get Minter in the second.

I was hoping they'd trade down as wel, but that does not mean they didn't try or had any willing trade partners. Looks like many teams were just staying put. I would have taken all those picks from Minny but I doubt they'd give them to a division rival. In he second round, any chance Brown falls to them or are there a few other teams above them still looking for LBs? Heres hoping there a run on skill position players before the Bears pick at 50.

They could've selected Todd McShay at pick 20 and some homers would say it wasn't a bad pick, same thing as last year.

I just think it's important to take a guaranteed starter, with as few flaws as possible with your first round pick. Time will tell.

I am all for making the OL better, but the Bears need to stop taking gambles in the first round. There was so much talent left at the 20 spot, and we let arguably one of this year's best DT fall to the Vikings.

Just finished watching, was out all night. I was drooling at the potential of Floyd next to Melton. But I knew there was no chance. I applaud the commitment to the OLine, but man, we could've grabbed a guy like Barrett Jones in the 2nd.

Officially worried about Emery as a drafter.

Emery's strength is supposed to be college scouting. Yet, what seems to be his strength is free agency and trades, while his weakness is his drafting and player evaluation. For the second year in a row he has reached in the first round and gotten poor value. Long had a second round grade. When there were players like Floyd, Rhodes, Eifert, and Trufant on the board, taking Long was simply not getting value. It is likely that they tried to trade down and couldn't find suitors. If they had traded down I believe they could have recouped the third round pick they gave up for Marshall and still gotten Long. That is if Long was the player they really wanted. With Long they addressed a need, but there will probably be equally as talented guard prospects available when they pick in the second round.

I think Emery has a little Jerry Krause in him. He has to prove to everyone he is a genius. So instead of taking the obvious value, Floyd, he has to take a player no one expected. That does very little to build confidence. When you see a team with a good track record for drafting take an unexpected player you tend to re-evaluate your opinion. When you see a guy like Emery, who has almost no track record, do that you simply think he made a mistake. So far the 2012 draft class has showed very little. Jeffrey flashed and has the potential to be a solid player, but McClellin showed very little, Rodriguez and Hardin did almost nothing. The jury is still out on these players, but the early returns aren't promising.

So far the 2012 draft class doesn't look very good, and the start to the 2013 draft class seems to be more of the same. I hope Long turns in to a solid starter for many years to come, but we will have to watch Floyd. Floyd is the player they could have had.

But that lump of coal has upside. Bury it really deep in the back yard and in a millions years you'll have a diamond.

Emery says the only way he would have traded down is if Long wasn't there. He's been set on Long for weeks.
Is that really wise? Flexibility is the key in a draft. A guy like Floyd drops in your lap or Eiffert slips down to you and they can't reevaluate the situation? Tunnel vision for a particular prospect isn't a good idea.

That is all coachspeak. He can't say, "We tried to trade down because the guy we wanted wasn't there. So we settled on this guy." Every coach says that whoever they got is exactly who they wanted all along. So maybe they really liked Long, or maybe they felt he was the best option they had left. We will never really know.

I think a lot of people are forgetting that the only draft board that matters to Emery is Emery's. We all get obsessed looking at what the Booyas tell us the prevailing wisdom is, but that isn't reality. If Long rated as really good value at 20, you should take him at 20. Its not a reach unless you would expect him to be there for you in the next round. Its fine to say trade down, but a) you have to have a partner and it seemed like EVERYBODY wants to trade down in this draft and b) If you think a certain guy is really good, and you think you know talent, you should assume other teams see it as well even if the 'draft experts' dont see it that way.

Basically, the Bears needed o-line help, and they got it here. There is no way we can tell if this was a good pick or not at this point, and we probably wont know for years. I dont know if Long is any good, but some help at guard is welcome and they seem to think Long could end up as a tackle, in which case this could be a really good pick. Or it could be a total bust. My point is there's no cause for despair.

I agree with it being coach speak. What if Cooper or Warmack would have fallen. Was Long still going to be the pick?

I was looking at the depth chart on Ourlads. Right now, the starting OL looks like Bushrod (LT) Long (LG) Garza © Carimi (RG) Webb (RT). If Long starts, Slauson either doesn't make the team or is depth. (Same goes for Britton). I'm just not sure if Long is the better option this year, if you have a win now mentality.

Certainly, no one knows what the future holds. And, while the only draft board that matters is Emery's, you still need to keep an eye on what other teams are doing. I would be curious to know where Floyd or Eifert was ranked on Emery's board?

Why take a player in the 1st round (and pay him first round money) when he probably will be available in the second round?

To me this is the key. IF you give Emery the benefit of the doubt that Long is the best player than he should have either traded down or taken another player than traded up to the early 2nd round to get Long because I didn't see a single projection that had Long going in the first round. I guess it is possible that another team put a first round value on Long so maybe he wouldn't be there but I would have liked to see them take that chance.

At least they are addressing the O line in a big way because that by far has been the biggest weakness on the team since 2006.

I liked the pick mainly because I was terrified that they were goingto draft teo. Addressing oline until it actually improves is the right move. Until Cutler can actually go through a game without getting murdered our offense will suck. The only pick I would have liked over oline is a top CB like Trufant, and lets face it, not a need for this year. We should look at Jones in the second and Mathieu in the 3/4 area. Unless someone else can point out a clearly superior oline prospect still on the board I am fine with this pick.

How many projections did you see with Geno Smith not going in the first? The "gurus" don't know jack.

You don't get it.

A lot of mocks in the last week had no first round qbs

The pick was a head-scratcher for me, but I'm not studying film and interviewing players etc. It does seem like Long could have been taken 10 spots later, IF (big if) the Bears were able to move back. However, it is sounding, based on comments from a previous poster, like Emery had no plans to move back if Long was there at 20. Again, a head-scratcher. But, with all of that said, I don't want to write it off as a bad pick yet. The approach (not looking to move back) is the issue I have, but I don't know how feasible that would have been anyway. I won't be too critical of the actual pick at this juncture. Only time will tell.

On the positive front, Emery has focused on the line this offseason. We've been demanding it get attention for a few years now… and it finally is.

Throw out all the mock drafts and all the talking heads. They are just like stats, you can pick and choose whatever you want to prove or disprove your point.

There are two parts to this equation. The player and the spot the player was taken.

Long may turn out to be a good player. Time will tell. But, he has admitted to an addiction problem and he doesn't have a large body of work to look at.

Taking a questionable player in the 1st round, when there are still players that both fit a team need and have less of a risk.

Yes, the Bears need OL help. They added 3 Offensive linemen through free agency. Should they use the rest of their picks to take OL?
