one CB takenno DTs takenno QBs takenrun on offensive linemen is overWe are in a good position. Good trade. Now just have to make the right pick

I don't doubt that he's a fine player, but winning starts in the trenches.

Nnamdi was the best CB in football much of the time he was here. How many games did we win?

Scrabble was good, but overrated IMHO. But that's neither here nor there. I think it's a huge mistake not to shore up that d line. Star/floyd gonna fall.....?

Star was the BPA but we did fill just as big of a need and there almost certainly will be a good DT available with our newly aquired 2nd round pick. So I dont hate the pick. I've hated our secondary for 2 years. Hayden is one of the top corners in this draft. Makes the draft look a lot like Al Davis is still around but that's not important. We got our second round pick back and got a potential future shut down corner. I'm not thrilled but I'm not disappointed either. I'm used to watching us draft a CB.

I agree, but you can't argue they sorely need some young talent in the secondary. Gotta play Peyton and Rivers twice a year.

Gotta believe it's all part of a larger plan. Maybe RM has trench guys in mind later in the draft.

Raiders selected Houston CB D.J. Hayden with the No. 12 overall pick.
This is one of two picks the Raiders received from the Dolphins for trading back from No. 3. They used it to get their man, who fills a massive need in the secondary. Of course, the Raiders have massive needs at basically every spot on the field. One of the draft's true "risers," Hayden (5-foot-11, 191) earned first-team All-CUSA honors as a senior despite being limited to nine games by a torn heart cavity suffered in a fluke practice collision. He was medically cleared this offseason, and was buoyed by phenomenal tape. Rated the draft's No. 1 corner by Mike Mayock, Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar, Hayden is blessed with exceptionally quick and sudden feet, plays aggressively on the ball and has extensive experience as a "matchup" cover man, shadowing No. 1 receivers. Also a takeaway specialist, Hayden racked up six picks, six forced fumbles and 11 tackles for loss across 22 college starts.

If Hayden is a talent, he'll be worth it. period. I wanted a D-line too, but you just can't say the pick was a mistake until they play.

Now I am rooting for Hayden, and hoping for no one to take any more D-linemen.

Yea, Hayden felt like an Al pick. Was thrilled we traded down & then it felt like last 10 yrs where we reached. Woulda felt real good about new regime with a top 5 guy & extra pick. Too much risk in Hayden for me. Facing Manning not a big need for DB cause Tebow beat us year before by rushing for over 100.

I wanted a trench player as much as everyone but this kid is no Phillip Buchanan or Fabian Washington, he's a player.

Well done hiding the interest till today.

Gotta love this kid, I posted something about him earlier.

Insta-starter.
News got out this afternoon. If Oakland was this high on him to take him at 1.03, the additional 2nd pick doesn't seem like a bad deal. These rankings are all relative and RM obviously had the guy high on his board. I'm looking forward to seeing if it's the right pick.

D.J. Hayden - DB - Raiders
CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports "several executives" believe the Raiders will take Houston CB D.J. Hayden at No. 3 if they can't trade back.
The Raiders prefer to trade down, but they are prepared to take their man in Hayden if a partner can't be found. Oakland needs help all over the field, especially on defense, and Hayden has been steadily picking up steam as the draft's top corner. The Raiders may not be able to trade down too far if they want him. The Lions at No. 5 and the Browns at No. 6 also have cornerback needs.

I disagree. DB, and specifically CB is a big need. How the hell else are we going to match up with Decker, DThomas and Welker? Hayden has nice measureables and resumé. If he can play it is a great pick. Period. I anticipate the Raiders to load up on teh trenches in rounds 2-4, the pick up a RB in round six.

Niners just jumped 13 spots for a 3rd. Any chance we can give up a 3rd & move up from Miami's 2nd to get Floyd? I was all for collecting picks but jeez if he's still there...

2nd round pick targets. If still on the board I'd love to see Barkley or Woods. Otherwise I'd go with the best available DT. Several good DTs still available. S Williams, Hankins, Short, J Williams, Jenkins.

In either the third or fourth round I wouldnt mind risking one of the players with big character issues. DE/OLB Demontre Moore, WR Da'Rick Rogers, TE Kelce, or CB Matthieu. All good on the field but risky off the field.

DJ Hayden:

OVERVIEW
There was no faster-rising prospect - or more heartwarming story - than Hayden in the weeks leading up to the 2013 NFL Draft.Hayden was named the Conference USA Defensive Newcomer of the year in 2011, leading Houston with 11 pass break-ups and picking off a pair of passes. He started the first nine games last season and was compiling an excellent senior season when he experienced a life-threatening experience when he tore a major vein in his heart from a collision during a November practice.

Hayden wasn't able to work out at the Scouting Combine, but did go through a battery of medical tests and was able to prove he is fully healthy. He returned to the field for Houston's pro day, and proceeded to rip off a 40-yard dash clocked as low as 4.33 seconds on some watches and was around 4.40 on his second attempt.

Twenty-five NFL teams took in Hayden's pro day workout, and he had at least seven individual meetings with teams before the draft. The medical reports are still concerning to many teams.

"It's the most unique injury in the history of the draft," Packers senior executive Alonzo Highsmith told The Houston Chronicle. "The only people that ever had it aren't alive and doctors have never seen it."

ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS: Fluid athlete with the agility and speed to effectively remain in the hip pocket of receivers. He breaks on the ball quickly and has shown natural ball skills, intercepting six passes in just 23 games, returning two of his four interceptions this past season for long touchdowns. Excellent top-end speed (clocked as low as 4.33 in the 40 at Houston's pro day). Combined with good height at 5-11, Hayden has the tools to develop into a true No. 1 corner. Excellent overall athlete who also boasts a 33.5-inch vertical jump and 10-foot broad jump.WEAKNESSES: Hayden has been fully cleared by doctors, but a life-threating experience will still give some teams caution. Lacks much experience against elite competition and will have a significant learning curve in the NFL.

Reggie McKenzie on D.J. Hayden

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer

Thursday, April 25th, 2013 at 7:41 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders general manager discussed the selection of D.J. Hayden Thursday night with the local media:

Q: Was Hayden the guy you targeted all along and you just though you could get him lower?

McKenzie: We targeted him. Now, to pick up an extra pick was a bonus.

Q: What about Hayden appealed to you and how much caution did his heart scare give you?

McKenzie: Of course we researched the health issues. Now, everything we got back from that standpoint was more than positive so it became a non-issue for us in that regard. He’s gonna have to mentally go through it now, that’s the only issue we had. As far as what we liked about him – the guy can cover. Point blank, he can cover. He can find the football so he does what we’re looking for in a cornerback – he’s a good cover corner who can get his hands on the football.”

Q: Did the way he survived the heart scare and pulled through it, did that raise his stock in your eyes?

McKenzie: No, I don’t think it raised his stock. It showed up how competitive and how aggressively he went after it to try to get back to his old self. It showed that but it didn’t raise his stock as far as being an overcomer.

Q: There’s a lot of good 5-11 corners in the NFL but it seems the prototype is taller corners. Can Hayden cover at the NFL level?

McKenzie: Yes. That’s why we drafted him. The thing with him, his man cover skills is what set him apart for us. He don’t lose a guy. He’s quick and he’s fast and he’s tough and aggressive in his play. So, from that standpoint we have zero issues.

Q: If a deal couldn’t be worked out, would you have taken Hayden at 3?

McKenzie: Yes.

Q: Was cornerback a position of need, or this guy too good to pass up?

McKenzie: You guys know me. I’m gonna get the best player. Once we declare our draft board, we’re gonna follow it. We’re not gonna try to fill this need and fill that need and go into the offseason saying ‘We got players that we needed.’ We want to get players that we think make a difference. We want difference-makers, guys that can make plays. And that’s where he was on our board.

Q: Getting a lot of offers for No. 3?

McKenzie: No, in the end, the offers dwindled, and some of the offers didn’t make sense. But this one made sense.

Q: This is a no-doubt pick, right?

McKenzie: Use your words: no doubt.

Q: Any hesitation whatsoever knowing his medical history?

McKenzie: It really wasn’t with me. Had a chance to bring him in, had many conversations, took him out to dinner – just to get to know the guy. We went down to his pro day and had one of my personnel guys take him out. We knew the guy. So researching that part, our doctors did a great job in researching all the medical stuff. So from that standpoint, it was a non-issue. Then when we put on the tape, which is how we make decisions, it became prevalent that that’s our guy.

Q: What can you say about his drive based on what he overcame?

McKenzie: It says a lot for his drive. It says a lot for his fortitude. He’s a want to guy. It says a lot about that but you still have to strap on the pads and make plays.

Q: Picking up a second rounder a priority?

McKenzie: To pick up some picks was a top priority. Whether that would have been a 2? We’re excited to get the two? Absolutely. We didn’t know which way the picks were coming especially from the conversations that we’ve had leading up to it. A lot of the offers didn’t make sense but this one did. We’re happy to get that two.

Q: Is he cleared to practice immediately?

McKenzie: He’s totally cleared.

Q: Nervous waiting to see if he’d still be there at 12?

McKenzie: Yes.I had an inkling that when you lose a player like Darrelle Revis I could see where they would pick a corner. But they went with the other guy and we got our guy.

Q: Who would you have taken if not there?

McKenzie: I’m going to say no comment on that one. When you move back you kind of have guys ranked in the area. We had some guys if our guy wasn’t there we had about five guys we were going to look into.

Q: What is his personality like?

McKenzie: He came across. What I look for is is he approachable. Does it seem like he will be one of those guys that’s going to be coachable and be a worker. Does he really like football? Is he going to come and get after it. He definitely showed that. I already knew the answer by the research we had from his past coaches and all our scouts dig and all that information. You watch him play you can tell the guy loves football. But sometimes you also like to look in a guy’s eyes when he tells you answers and he passed

Watching Hayden and Rhodes highlights side by side, makes you REALLY like Hayden. Just looks so much quicker and faster than Rhodes.
Quick and fast sums it up. The really important part is that he isn't using his speed as a crutch to recover from being out of place or making bad decisions, but he is using the speed to accentuate excellent reads and instincts; so much that the speed is secondary...
