*** 2013 Oakland Raiders thread *** (1 Viewer)

I prefer a trade down and hopefully pick up a high 2nd rd pick to replace the one we lost in the Palmer trade.

This roster desperately needs young top notch talent and with 2 picks in the first 50 or so picks we should be ale to do just that (DL, CB).

Obviously we want to trade down but it seems very unlikely unless someone becomes infatuated with Barkley or Smith. Maybe if Joekel somehow slips to the third pick but that is even less likely of happening. There is a tiny chance of someone wanting to trade up for Fisher or Milliner. I'm not going to get my hopes up for a trade down.

I like the addition of Walker to compete for Bryant's position. He doesnt look as good as Bryant but he comes at a fraction of the price. If he's only a rotational player he represents good value. Obviuosly I'd still like to get someone in the draft with more talent. The draft is deep at DT and there will likely be a really good value DT available to us in the third round. The only DT I feel is worthy of the 3rd overall pick is Star. If we end up trading down there are a number of solid options either later in round 1 or in round 2. Any first day pick should be able to play a lot right away even if he isnt immediately named the starter.

Lechler might be done with the Raiders, and I am very certain Reggie will spend money much more wisely than Al would ever dare.

We have yet to address our need for CBs. There are still some decent FA options. Jenkins, Biggers, and Porter would all represent a major upgrade at the position. I wish we would get the situations with Kelly and Palmer resolved to go after a couple of these guys.

From Pro Football Focus:

SIGNING! Multiple sources are reporting that OT Khalif Barnes has re-signed with the Raiders. He graded at -8.2 last season on 571 snaps, all at right tackle. The eight-year pro has yet to pull a positive grade during the PFF era, and he’ll likely be in the mix for the starting right tackle job along with Willie Smith who struggled on his way to a -19.3 overall grade last season.

Uugh! I was really hoping we could upgrade that position.

I have to say I told you all so because I got a lot of heat for saying so. Fact is its a resigning that makes sense.

On the same day the NFL finally after more than a decade gets rid of the rule responsible for the worst call in league history, the league introduces a new 15 yard penalty rule they can use against us.

Robert Kraft abstained from voting on the Tuck Rule. Gee I wonder why.

It is still a position of BIG need. The fact he graded out so poorly, and has throughout his career, indicates more about the Raiders cap state than Barnes talent. Brutal. The sooner he is sent packing the better.

Nooooooooooooo

I really think Barnes is a safety signing for lack of a better term. I am sure he cost little, knows the team, and they know what to expect. i don't think it precludes a late FA signing or being beat out by a draft pick.

I agree. Sounds like the contract came in around $800k. They keep a player they are familiar with, and who knows the program. Sometimes it is better to know what you're dealing with in terms of strenghts and weaknesses.

Lechler to the Texans.

Too bad to see him leave, but I'm happy that McKenzie didn't (over) pay.

There is room for one or two more tackles on the team depending on what position Bergstrom plays at. Its unfortunate we cut Barksdale and are now going back to power blocking. As long as Smith doesnt return we'll be better off.

I'll pour out a 40 for lecher. I'm glad he's gone but I nearly got in a fight with a fellow raider fan, back in the dark days of JaWalrus Russell It was at the Hampton inn bar just south of the stadium. Police were called and everything. I was defending him as our best player on the roster. :D

Fare thee well #9

As a long time Raiders fan im happy to see that we are going backwards for the RIGHT reasons, and that in a few years we will be going up instead of down.

The purge of albatross contracts and scholarships is long overdue. And while it doesn't set up as a team considered in the running for a playoffs spot in 2013, I disagree with the pretense that the club is moving "backward". If the plan is executed correctly, there may be a lot of the building blocks for the future already on the team or soon to be drafted. We just don't see it yet or recognize what we have. I think we are moving "forward", even if record wise we may be moving sideways.

When i say backwards i AM talking about the win / loss record and the product on the field this up coming season and a few beyond (maybe sooner),We are taking 2 steps backward so we can move 4 steps forward.

Bye bye Carson

From Rototworld:

Carson Palmer - QB - Raiders

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Carson Palmer is "highly unlikely" to restructure his contract, which means his two-year Raiders stint is all but over.

Palmer's unwillingness to restructure means the Raiders would be left with the decision of whether to keep Palmer at his $13 million base salary, or release him outright. Our bet would be on the latter happening. Palmer simply isn't worth his scheduled pay at age 33, and Oakland could free up a small amount of cap space by releasing him. The Raiders have emerged as the favorites to draft West Virginia's Geno Smith next month. Once released, Palmer is expected to draw immediate interest from the Cardinals.

Reggie should try threatening to trade him to the east coast to see if he would budge on the contract issue.

Since we already have so much dead cap this year, it's probably the right call to dump Carson too and absorb his hit in full this year. It would seal the deal for a top 5 pick probably and maybe would even net Clowny when all said and done.

In the meantime, we'd get to see what we really have in Pryor and if the org is high on Gino, maybe that route. Will get really interesting if Carson is bumped.

I wonder about the details of the cap hit. Last I heard if they cut Palmer it was 9 mil hit. Curious if waiting on cutting him has any impact. For instance if they waited until June 1st (or later), does that impact the numbers?

It is no secret the Cards covet Palmer so the longer the Raiders hold him the less time he has to get immersed in the system. Might be a way to get some leverage and get a draft pick, even if it is a low one.

Would Rex be desperate enough to want Palmer? Or the Titans?

Yea, I know, I know...just dreaming

The problem with this is that he has already showed he will take his ball and go home if its not where he wants to play, so I'm sure any team trading for him would demand to talk to him in before finalizing any deal to see if he would want to go there and maybe if he would redo his deal for them.

Seems most of our players want out. This is concerning because we have some significant free agents next year including Reece, McFadden, Veldheer, Houston, and Janikowski.

Palmer wasnt happy when we fired Hue Jackson. If he's refusing to even negotiate then its clear he doesnt want to be here. If we lose Palmer, we will be in 100 percent rebuild mode. Looking back its becomes questionable why we didnt cut more players last year if that was the plan. At the time though we had a team capable of competing for a playoff spot. Because we got a new GM who wants to build things his way we only made a half effort to compete and half an effort to rebuild. That seemed to be the same plan so far this year but now we are really looking at cutting Palmer and going into a full rebuild. It does not look good for 2013. If we do worse than we did in 2012, its going to be hard to convince our veteran players to return. We will have to pin our hopes on someone like Geno Smith, Matt Barkley, Terell Pryor, or even Tim Tebow to win some games and convince teammates to stay. I knew there would be a lot of change with a new GM but wow. I didnt expect to sink all the way to the bottum.

They were the 3rd worst team in football with Palmer. There's few worse places to be as a franchise than being a horrible team with an aging QB.There's little reason to keep him. He's not going to take a paycut when he knows the Cardinals will pay him (and have much more inticing WR weapons. Raiders will be an awful football team in 2013 with or without Palmer. Even if not sold on Geno Smith, there's little reason to hold even Pryor behind Palmer.

Put me in the camp of 'Cut Palmer/Do Not Draft Geno'. I might be in the minority here, but I don't think cutting Palmer means the Raiders will, or have to, draft Geno.

Agreed. And to add the Raiders will have the option and cap space next year to tag McFadden should they so choose. For anyone else that walks they would would at least be in position to get compensatory picks. How fast the Raiders become competitive will hinge on the decision they make about the future QB and if Reggie hits on his picks.

Geno is going to be a disaster, folks. Picking him will set this franchise back ANOTHER five years.
Smith is really hard to judge because of the team he played for. I'd feel better if we drafted Barkley. Smith is more athletic though and that causes some GMs to drool. If we use our first pick on a QB we have to get it right or like you said, its going to set us back a few more years. I'm sick of going through QBs and I'd rather just pay Palmer who is a good QB.

I'll join your camp if I get desperate. I would prefer 'Deal Palmer/Do Not Draft Geno/Draft Star or trade down'I think the market for Palmer will start to heat up around the draft and maybe even after the draft. Reggie gains nothing by cutting him now. He can wait till training camp, go thru the camp battle with Pryor, see if Carson's changed at all and cut him then. The cap space Reggie is sitting on affords him time to wait on a best offer.

I'd say Veldheer is definitely ready for the power running game...http://www.silverandblackpride.com/2013/3/25/4147880/oakland-raiders-jared-veldheer-is-yoked-power-blocking-scheme
Big boy. Just hope he's doing it naturally. Can't afford to have him get suspended.

Here's my biggest issue with Geno, as stated a few pages back. Great QBs take average WRs and make them better. Take a look at some of the receivers Brady won Super Bowls with in New England. Smith destroyed terrible defenses. When he needed to step his game up against better competition, he was a run-of-the-mill QB. Take a look at his game logs, especially during the 5-game losing streak and the bowl game.http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/gamelog/_/id/488025/geno-smithThat tells me this is a guy you can't count on to rally the troops when the going gets tough. Not to mention that he always has the same "Art Shell look" on his face all the time -----> I have to question his passion for the game. If he proves me wrong... good for him.

If I remember right the bowl game was in poor weather, but I agree with your assessment of him. He has a lot of question marks. I also think he is the type of guy that could have his career ruined playing for a bad team for a couple years. Not a fan of taking a QB just because you need one and he is the best of a poor class. With the third overall pick you need to pick a winner and there are really good defensive players available. Most likely the Raiders will be picking top five again next year. Nothing wrong with waiting to take a QB till you are more sure (rarely ever is there a sure thing like Luck) of the one you are picking. In the meantime draft a defensive stud and maybe even take a look at what you have with Pryor.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock raised a few eyebrows when he called Alabama guard Chance Warmack the best draft prospect he's seen on film this year. The hype that Warmack is the best college guard prospect since Steve Hutchinson came out of Michigan has overshadowed another potential early first-round prospect in North Carolina's Jonathan Cooper.NFL.com's Bucky Brooks noted on Tuesday's "Path to the Draft" that Cooper exceeded all expectations at the Tarheels' pro day while turning in the best workout he has seen from a guard in a long time.Brooks' evaluation meshes with that of NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell, who called Cooper the most athletic guard he's seen since he began studying college tape carefully less than a decade ago."Plus I love his playing personality," Cosell added on Yahoo's Shutdown Corner podcast. "He was tenacious, he was competitive, he initiated contact, he went after people, he had really light feet."Debating the two guards on "Path to the Draft," NFL.com's Charles Davis and Daniel Jeremiah favored Cooper while former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum went for Warmack. The takeaway, as I see it, isn't whether Cooper has a more promising NFL future than Warmack. It's that both players are better prospects than top guards of recent years, including Stanford's David DeCastro, who was billed as a special talent last April."If either of those players is on the board at 10," Mayock said last month, "I'd jump all over them."

Not a fan of taking a QB just because you need one and he is the best of a poor class.
I actually think Glennon will be the best QB from this class, but there's almost no chance he's there in the 3rd round.
Well I am not a big Glennon guy. I watched a few of his games including their bowl game and I did not like what i saw. Bad picks and the guy is one of the least mobile QBs I have ever seen. Did not like his pocket presence either, but he did have a big arm. Reminded me of Kerry Collins a bit.

If we can't trade down, then I hope we take in order Fischer, Floyd. Then hoping then can grab Zac Dysert in the third round. Build a solid oline around two young QBs, depend on the run game to shorten the game and hope for the best.

The team signed Alex Barron. In two quick moves they simply moved the penalties from D-line to O-line.
