2014 NFL Free Agents (2 Viewers)

Rotoworld:

ESPN New York doesn't anticipate the Jets re-signing free agent Kellen Winslow.

Neither do we. It'd actually be a surprise if Winslow played another regular-season down in the NFL. His gas tank is running on E, he's facing possession of synthetic marijuana charges, he has balky knees, and he was also reportedly caught masturbating in his vehicle at Target. Winslow will turn 31 this summer and didn't make an on-field impact last season with the Jets.

Jimmy Graham leads top 25 NFL free agents for 2014

By Chris Wesseling

Around the League Writer

With just two more football Sundays left in the current season, the Around The League crew is taking its first glance at the 2014 NFL free-agent market.

It's early in the offseason process. Franchise tags have yet to be discussed. There's still time for clubs to lock up young stars to long-term contracts. Many of these names will be removed from consideration by the time we compile our more extensive previews regarding upcoming NFL free agents in early March.

Our list places the highest value on ascendent players with little or no reason to expect a dropoff in production over the next few years.

Without further ado, here are Around The League's top 25 NFL free agents for 2014:

1. Jimmy Graham, New Orleans Saints tight end

2. Greg Hardy, Carolina Panthers defensive end

3. Brian Orakpo, Washington Redskins linebacker

4. Jairus Byrd, Buffalo Bills safety

5. T.J. Ward, Cleveland Browns safety

6. Alterraun Verner, Tennessee Titans cornerback

7. Branden Albert, Kansas City Chiefs left tackle

8. Michael Johnson, Cincinnati Bengals defensive end

9. Lamarr Houston, Oakland Raiders defensive end

10. Brent Grimes, Miami Dolphins cornerback

11. Eugene Monroe, Baltimore Ravens left tackle

12. Vontae Davis, Indianapolis Colts cornerback

13. Linval Joseph, New York Giants defensive tackle

14. Jason Hatcher, Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle

15. Jared Veldheer, Oakland Raiders left tackle

16. Aqib Talib, New England Patriots cornerback

17. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Denver Broncos cornerback

18. Alex Mack, Cleveland Browns center

19. Eric Decker, Denver Broncos wide receiver

20. Michael Bennett, Seattle Seahawks defensive end

21. B.J. Raji, Green Bay Packers defensive tackle

22. Sam Shields, Green Bay Packers cornerback

23. Walter Thurmond, Seattle Seahawks cornerback

24. Donald Butler, San Diego Chargers linebacker

25. Randy Starks, Miami Dolphins defensive tackle

We previewed Championship Sunday and sat down with Rams star Robert Quinn in the latest "Around The League Podcast."

Imagine if the Packers could muster Clay Matthews and Brian Orakpo for pass rushers. Seems like that might make a huge difference.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune does not anticipate free agent Toby Gerhart returning to the Vikings.
"It's hard to see Gerhart back in Minnesota," writes beat reporter Master Tesfatsion. Tesfatsion believes Gerhart has the "talent to be a lead back in the NFL," though we don't agree. Still, investing in a long-term backup for Adrian Peterson wouldn't be a savvy move by Vikings GM Rick Spielman. Expect Zach Line, Matt Asiata, and perhaps a late-round draft pick to vie for the job.

Rotoworld:

Free agent Vince Young hopes to find a team for the 2014 season.
"I am pleased with the quick resolution of my bankruptcy case," Young said Tuesday. "With all these battles behind me, I am able to devote my sole focus on family, football and pursuing all opportunities in front of me." Young couldn't earn a roster spot in Packers camp last summer, and hasn't appeared in a regular-season game since 2011. His career is likely over.

Rotoworld:

The Indianapolis Star reports the "odds are stacked heavily against" free agent Darrius Heyward-Bey re-signing with the Colts.

We'd also consider it an extreme long shot. DHB opened the season as the No. 2 receiver opposite Reggie Wayne and held onto the job far longer than he deserved to before being benched for good in Week 14. Heyward-Bey caught just 29 passes for 309 yards and one touchdown on the year, while dropping nine passes. He's our No. 28 free-agent receiver in a top-heavy market.

Rotoworld:

Victor Cruz has been lobbying for free agent Hakeem Nicks to re-sign with the Giants.

"I have (asked him to stay)," Cruz said. "Selfishly, I would love for him to stay." Cruz needs a dominant receiver on the outside that is able to draw double-teams, allowing him to see single coverage in the slot. In 2013, Nicks didn't provide that but has in years past. The G-Men aren't expected to re-up with Nicks but could shoot him a lowball offer just to say they tried. Rueben Randle will see an increased role, but the Giants are expected to add a legitimate outside weapon.

Other than being friends I don't see why Cruz would care. At this point IMO Rueben Randle would out play Nicks.

Rotoworld:

Lions released WR Nate Burleson.

"It’s a hard decision for them to make, but I can’t blame them for making it," Burleson told the Detroit Free Press. In reality, it was a no brainer, even for a team short on receivers. Going on 33, Burleson was practically nonexistent last season, and due $5.5 million in 2014. It was an untenable sum for a team with all sorts of cap problems. Injuries have limited Burleson to just 15 combined games the past two seasons, while his separation skills have vanished. Despite all that, he intends to keep playing. Receiver was already a massive need for the Lions, but now they're perilously low on bodies, let alone skill. Tapping the fertile free-agent market or using an early-round pick on a wideout will be a must.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport believes both the 49ers and free agent Anquan Boldin are interested in working out a new deal.

This matches everything else we have been hearing out of San Francisco this offseason. Boldin had something of a resurgence in San Francisco in 2013, posting his first 1,000-yard season since 2009. Going into his 34-year-old season, Boldin is unlikely to find a guaranteed multi-year contract anywhere else. This deal will likely get done.

Source: Ian Rapoport on Twitter

Patterson may be more talented (although both were first round picks), but still has room to grow as a WR. Jennings seems to be in the decline stage of his career - not sure with "at best" if you're suggesting Jerome Simpson or Jarius Wright are better but my guess is that would be a very unpopular opinion.

But we can stick Minneota is the "argument" category, I guess.
Having watched the Vikings, I don't think Jennings has lost much...considering the QB play that he had to put up with this year, I thought he played well.
Greg Jennings needs to do a better job of blocking. He was always open however and with any competence from the QB position he would perform near to what he was able to do in Green Bay. I think Patterson still has a way to go as a route runner. I think Jennings is going to be one of the main downfield targets along with Rudolph.

Patterson does most of his damage after the catch so I see something like the Sproles role going to him. Norv will certainly get him more involved, but for 2014 I would expect Jennings to lead the team in receptions.

Rotoworld:

Free agent Nate Burleson says he's already been contacted by a "couple of teams," and expects to find a new home in the near future.

The Detroit News speculates the Cowboys and Bucs are two teams that could have interest. Former Lions OC Scott Linehan is now the "passing-game coordinator" in Dallas. Burleson appeared to be running on fumes after he returned from his broken arm last season, but his reliable hands and leadership will be appealing to teams looking for a reserve wideout.

Profootballtalk reports re-signing free agent Anquan Boldin is a "priority" for the 49ers.
CSN Bay Area, NFL Network and ESPN have all reported similar this offseason. That means the 49ers are telling anyone and everyone they want to keep their leading receiver from 2013. The interest is reportedly mutual, but with this potentially being Boldin's last shot at a nice payday, he's not going to have much incentive to agree to a hometown discount.

Rotoworld:

ESPN Dallas' Todd Archer believes signing free agent Nate Burleson would "make sense" for the Cowboys.

Archer notes that Dez Bryant has endured recent back problems, while current Nos. 3 and 4 receivers Cole Beasley and Dwayne Harris "have limitations." (Miles Austin won't be back.) We could see Burleson as a training camp insurance policy on a minimum salary for the Cowboys, but if Dez, Beasley, Terrance Williams, and Harris stay healthy this fall, Burleson probably wouldn't make it.

Rotoworld:

CSN Bay Area considers the Raiders a possible landing spot for free agent Josh McCown.
McCown fits the type of pocket passer the Raiders are looking for to run OC Greg Olson's offense and could be brought in as a veteran stopgap if allowed to reach the open market. He resurrected his career under coach Marc Trestman in 2013, posting 1,829 yards and a 13:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio over eight games (five starts). McCown has expressed his interest in re-signing with the Bears, but would likely have to accept a hometown discount. Oakland has also been linked to veteran quarterbacks Josh Freeman and Mark Sanchez this offseason.

The Boston Herald lists free agent Hakeem Nicks as a potential fit for the Patriots.
Nicks was a major disappointment in his contract season, showing both questionable effort and remaining talent level. The Patriots have a history of buying low on players, and could bring in Nicks if they move on from Julian Edelman. The Herald suggests Nicks may only require a two-year, $7-10 million deal. New England could also show interest in free agent Emmanuel Sanders after signing him to a restricted free agent offer sheet last year.

CSN Bay Area reports the 49ers are currently negotiating a "multi-year extension" with free agent-to-be Anquan Boldin.
NFL free agents can begin negotiating with other teams beginning March 8. Free agency formally opens for business on March 11. All signs to this point have indicated re-signing Boldin was the 49ers' top offseason priority, and that clearly appears to be true with the sides already in contract talks. It's believed the 49ers are targeting a roughly two-year, $10 million agreement with about $6 million guaranteed. Boldin turned 33 last October.

The Boston Herald is the second media outlet this week to project free agent Eric Decker's forthcoming contract to be in the $10 million-per-year range.
Early last week, ESPN New York set the bar at "at least" $9 million a year. "Eric Decker might land $10 million per season," writes Herald reporter Jeff Howe. Howe believes Hakeem Nicks may only command $3 million to $4 million annually. It seems Howe is guessing, but informed guesses are notable. All signs point to Decker being paid like a true No. 1 wideout this offseason.

Rotoworld:

The Lions are expected to meet with free agent Brandon Pettigrew's camp at this week's Scouting Combine.

The Combine is a place for teams and agents to get together on a yearly basis. After the Lions locked up C Dominic Raiola on a one-year deal, their attention has turned to Pettigrew. The franchise tag could be an option if a long-term agreement can't be reached, but Pettigrew isn't a playmaker at the position. He's a solid inline blocker and is our No. 4 free-agent tight end.

Free agent WR Andre Roberts said he and the Cardinals haven't engaged in contract talks.

"I'm not sure about the interest of the Cardinals, yet," Roberts said. "They haven't come to me about anything. I am actually expecting them to offer me something." Roberts cited the presence of Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd in Arizona, which obviously means fewer balls coming his direction. Roberts turned 26 last month, is durable, and proved he can play in 2011-2012. He's our No. 8 available free-agent receiver. Roberts can play inside or outside.

Free agent Eric Decker indicated that he and the Broncos aren't in the same ballpark money-wise, and he intends to "do what is best for my family."

"If we can get on the same page, I will welcome a call from the Broncos, but I need to do what is best for my family," Decker said. "It's not all about the money for me. It's about going to work everyday and having fun and enjoying my job." Money may not ultimately be the deciding factor, but it's going to play a big part. There's been chatter that Decker could command upwards of $10 million annually on the open market. The Broncos aren't going to pay that. Decker is going to be a rich man come mid-March. He'll have a hot market.

Please. This will not happen. Not after the Mike Wallace debacle last year.

Only takes one dumb team with a lot of cap space. (Raiders and Jaguars come to mind)

Former Bears beat reporter Dan Pompei says "some suspect" free agent Devin Hester is headed to the Bucs.

It's a logical suspicion because former Bears coach Lovie Smith is now head coach of the Bucs. Smith allowed Hester to work as a receiver in addition to his return duties for the Bears from 2006-12, something the 31-year-old surely enjoyed. Under Marc Trestman last season, Hester was a strict return man and finished fifth in kick-return average at 27.7 yards per return.

Mike Wallace didn't perform all that badly - it was Tannehill's inability to deliver an accurate deep ball that made him a fantasy "bust".

It likely will happen, simply because it always does. There will be some team that just will not be able to help itself and will pay.

WGR 550 Buffalo suggests the Bills could franchise tag free agent FS Jairus Byrd with the intention of trading him.

"They just can't let him go for nothing," says beat man Joe Buscaglia. Tagging Byrd for the second consecutive season would cost the Bills a reasonable $8.299 million, but would further damage an already shaking relationship. Byrd, one of the premier free agents available at any position, wants to become the highest paid safety in the history of the NFL. It's conceivable the tag will be used to either buy some time on a long-term deal or a trade.

Rotoworld:

Former Rams GM Billy Devaney referred to free agent DT B.J. Raji as "pretty much just a guy."

Raji's stock has sunk sharply at the wrong time. He has zero sacks over his last 39 games (including playoffs), has zero forced fumbles in his five-year career and graded out dead last against the run among 3-4 ends in PFF's 2013 grades. Raji might be better off in a scheme that allows interior linemen more freedom, but there's a good chance he's also regretting the decision to turn down $8 million annually a year ago.

Among those with Spielman at Arctic Blast this weekend included coach Mike Zimmer, who suggested to Spielman that they should make the trip to Lake Mille Lacs, and three future free agents: running back Toby Gerhart, wide receiver Jerome Simpson and defensive end Everson Griffen, who all expressed some interest in returning to the Vikings.

“I’m just trying to show my love to the Vikings and basically tell them that I want to be here, and I want to be a Minnesota Viking,” Griffen said. “I’ll just let the chips fall where they may, and whatever I did last year on film hopefully is enough that they want me back here.”

Griffen and Gerhart got their first chance to meet Zimmer in a relaxed environment while on the trip, but Simpson is very familiar with Zimmer during his four seasons with the Bengals.

“I just wanted to be around my teammates and have fun with this Arctic Blast and be around seeing people from Minnesota,” Simpson said. “It wasn’t like I was trying to do, I guess, a suck-up move. I know Zimmer already.”

Gerhart said he’s interested to see how many teams pursue him in his first experience as a free agent. While he’d like to become a lead running back, Gerhart said he also understands the league is about longevity.

“You see all the health stuff coming out, and I know my parents and my wife are like, ‘Hey if you stick around Minnesota, you can play longer and walk when you’re 40,’ ” Gerhart said. “There’s two sides to it. We’re going to weigh everything, see what happens and make a decision.

All the more reason to draft a fresh backup, that will last longer. When it comes to Minnesota, their credibility rating with me is not so high.

Who do you guys think would the Vikings likely target in free agency or the draft if Gerhart moves on?
Nobody. They will just draft a body. Just like they did with Toby.
Toby was a second round pick and has proven to be a solid runner in relief. Not sure they were looking for "just a body" when they spend a mid-second on him.

And they traded up to get him...

Are we arguing about how good the backup to Adrian Peterson could be? Last I checked, that guy really isn't that valuable. But if you want to continue discussing the merits of whether they draft a RB or sign a guy like Mendenhall or James Starks, go for it.

Well I mainly posted this link to show that while Gerhart is looking forward to being a free agent, and possibly being offered closer to a lead RB position with another team than he has with the Vikings, he isn't against staying in MN if the right offer is not there for him. Thinking about his health long term as motivation for staying on as the back up.

The Vikings have already invested quite a bit into Gerhart. He may feel that appreciation from the team and if the Vikings offer a competitive contract with his other offers, it is possible he decides to stay.

Most Viking fans seem to think Gerhart leaving as a free agent is a foregone conclusion. I am just pointing out that while it is more likely Gerhart ends up with another team, it is still possible that he decides to stay with the Vikings.

As far as who would be the back up if Gerhardt walks?

As already mentioned Zach Line could win that job. Line is a somewhat similar player to Gerhart, Big RB who can catch the ball pretty well. There is a role for such a player in Norv Turners offense (for Gerhart if he stays as well) that I think Line would fit better than the other options at this time.

The COP guy who I think could get a shot is Joe Banyard who played pretty well in the preseason for the Vikings. He is a different type of runner, more shifty and less power. But I thought he looked decent in limited playing time. Asiata may be kept but he did not seem like anything special when he got opportunity last season.

I do not think RB is a priority for the Vikings at all. But it is possible they add another RB from the draft 4th round or later, because this draft class looks pretty deep at the position and there may be a quality RB still available that late who might interest the Vikings.

Peterson has missed a decent amount of time over the last three seasons and will turn 29 this year, so the team may be more selective in choosing a backup than you think they should be. If they just wanted a body, maybe they'll just stick with Matt Asiata.

The Vikings will meet with the player rep for free agent QB Matt Cassel Thursday.

Cassel left $3.7 million on the table when he opted out of his deal with the Vikings, so we know he's expecting to earn more than that. The Vikes are a legit candidate to pay him, as GM Rick Spielman stated Thursday that he's interested. Adrian Peterson has also thrown his support behind Cassel, saying he hopes Spielman passes on a rookie and just rides with Cassel. He's our No. 3 free agent quarterback available, behind only Michael Vick and Josh McCown.

No, I was responding to what I felt was an inaccurate statement, "They will just draft a body. Just like they did with Toby." which was made in response to the question "Who do you guys think would the Vikings likely target in free agency or the draft if Gerhart moves on?"

Cool. I hear ya, but he only has missed 6 games in 3 years, 4 of which were after he tore his ACL 3 years ago. I said "just another body" b/c let's be honest, every guy is "just another body" compared to AP. I agree, they will probably will be more selective given his age, which is why I made my original statement of drafting vs the free agent market.

I edited my response because it sounded more harsh than I meant it to be. Originally I was just trying to say that trading up in the second round to get Gerhart said to me, they thought more of him then you did.

Rotoworld:

Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell expects to re-sign free agent Chad Henne before he hits the open market.

Specifically asked if he anticipated Henne reaching the open market, Caldwell said he "didn't think so." The sides plan to speak at the Combine. Henne is near the "top" of this year's free-agent quarterback class, but only because it's embarrassingly thin. The Jags are almost certainly hoping to re-sign Henne as a mentor for a first-round pick.

Rotoworld:

Speaking Thursday, Lions coach Jim Caldwell was noncommittal about free agent Brandon Pettigrew's status.
"We have to look at every option," Caldwell said. "We've got to have contingencies for every single thing. So we look at it on both sides of it, and we'll see how things work out." Coaches are typically a little more sunny if they expect a player to return, but there's still not much to read into Caldwell's comments. The sides are meeting at the Combine.
