2014 NFL Free Agents (1 Viewer)

According to the Chicago Tribune, DE Michael Bennett has emerged as the Bears' "top target" in free agency.

The Bears are in "strong pursuit" of Martellus' brother, and reportedly hope to replace Julius Peppers with Michael at right defensive end. Two club officials told the Tribune they expect Bennett to sign with Chicago "after free agency opens at 3 p.m. (CT) Tuesday." Bears GM Phil Emery has a strong working relationship with agent Drew Rosenhaus, who reps Bennett. It sounds like it's just a matter of time before Bennett is rushing quarterbacks in the Windy City.

Report: Raiders expected to land T/G Saffold

5856.jpg

The Baltimore Sun reports the Raiders are expected to sign free agent T/G Rodger Saffold "for roughly $8 million per year."
The Raiders must value Saffold over in-house free agent LT Jared Veldheer, as the report states the Cardinals are expected to sign Veldheer for "between $7 million and $7.5 million." Saffold has generally been stretched as a starting left tackle in the league. He's fared better at right tackle and most productively at guard. Versatile but injury prone, Saffold would certainly be locked into the blindside in Oakland if they're going to shell out that kind of money.

According to the Denver Post, the Broncos are expected to pursue free agent SS T.J. Ward when the market opens Tuesday.

As we suspected. Denver is needy at strong safety, and Broncos exec Tom Heckert drafted Ward in Cleveland. The Broncos also have quite a bit of cap (roughly $25 million) for a team commonly perceived as old. Ward turned 27 in December. He is a difference-making run defender and not a liability in coverage.

Nice work Sweetness_34

I appreciate the contributions that everyone is making to this thread!

Cheers,

Rotoworld:

The player rep for free agent TE Andrew Quarless says he's had discussions with eight teams since Saturday.
As an all-around tight end with athletic upside, Quarless is a hot name. The Packers want him back and the Giants (with former Green Bay TE coach Ben McAdoo) are going after him as well. We don't know the other teams that have reached out to Quarless, but the Patriots, Bills, Lions, Falcons, Bucs and Jets are among the league's more tight-end needy teams.

Free agent QB Josh McCown said four teams have expressed real interest so far.
The four teams are believed to be the Jets, Bucs, Texans and Bears. McCown said that if he does leave Chicago, it will be to pursue a starting opportunity. The 34-year-old threw 13 touchdowns against one interception last season, going 3-2 as a starter thanks to the schemes and tutelage of Marc Trestman. McCown is a strong candidate to get overpaid this week and flee Chicago.

SI's Peter King suggests the 49ers as a possible backup plan for free agent QB Michael Vick.
The obvious landing spots for Vick are places that can offer him a chance to compete for the starting job. King says the Jets make the most sense and lists the Raiders as well. But if those opportunities dry up, backup jobs with the Eagles and 49ers will come into play. Colin Kaepernick's No. 2 right now is McLeod Bethel-Thompson. Last year's backup, Colt McCoy, is a free agent.

A source tells CSN Philly that the Eagles haven't shown much interest in free agent S Jairus Byrd "yet."
The Eagles have had a gaping hole at safety ever since Brian Dawkins left and Byrd is a true difference maker. But GM Howie Roseman has continually stated his intention not to overspend in free agency, and Byrd is seeking to become the highest paid safety in the game at a minimum of $9 million annually. It would be a surprise if the Eagles got in on the high-stakes bidding here.

SI's Peter King says free agent CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is "likely" to re-sign with the Broncos.
After watching Sam Shields get a four-year, $39 million deal, Rodgers-Cromartie would be insane not to test the market. Ultimately, the Broncos are expected to pony up the cash. They have the 10th-most cap space in the league, Rodgers-Cromartie was an elite cover corner throughout the Super Bowl run and Chris Harris is coming off an ACL tear. DRC was our No. 5 free agent corner available this spring, just ahead of Shields.

The New York Daily News reports the Jets have interest in free agent SS T.J. Ward.
They're the third team to be connected to Ward, joining Detroit and Denver. Assuming the Broncos are willing to pony up the money -- and they have plenty of cap space -- we're considering Denver the favorites for Ward. Ward would help the Jets, but they have bigger needs to fill on offense and at cornerback.

According to ESPN's Adam Caplan, it would be a "small upset" if the Falcons didn't land free agent OG Jon Asamoah.
Caplan reports Asamoah would start at right guard, bookending LG Justin Blalock. The Falcons need multiple O-Line reinforcements, but securing Asamoah would be a good start. He's an effective pass blocker and plays with a mean streak. New assistant GM Scott Pioli drafted Asamoah in Kansas City.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Dolphins are "expressing real interest" in free agent FS Jairus Byrd.
Byrd would upgrade on outgoing FS Chris Clemons, although safety play wasn't a weakness in Miami last year. RapSheet reports the Fins are "gearing up for another big year in free agency." Miami committed a four-year, $32 million deal to LCB Brent Grimes, and is expected to fork over $9.5 million annually to LT Branden Albert on Tuesday. Byrd will command $10 million per year.

Rotoworld:

One league source told the Florida Times Union that Maurice Jones-Drew should anticipate two-year offers in free agency.
As far as we can tell, Jones-Drew's market has been dead during the three-day negotiating window. "With as many miles as he’s got on his wheels, somebody may give him a third year," the league source said. "Maybe $4 million in the first year from somebody. But I don’t think he’ll get more than that." We'd be surprised if he got the $4 million. Jones-Drew turns 29 in two weeks.

Rotoworld:

The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero is hearing free agent LT Branden Albert's deal with the Dolphins is "almost done."
Salguero says the contract isn't "100 percent done" -- it can't be until Tuesday at 4PM ET, anyway -- but Albert "will be a Dolphin." We're just awaiting contract details at this point. Albert is entering his age-30 season. Reports indicate he'll command north of $9 million annually as the market's top-paid tackle.

Rotoworld:

The Miami Herald's Adam Beasley is hearing that chatter of free agent FS Jairus Byrd landing with the Dolphins is a "smokescreen."
The smokescreen was apparently leaked by Byrd's reps to the NFL Network, which reported Sunday the Fins were "expressing real interest" in this year's top free agent safety. It may be a sign Byrd's camp isn't satisfied with his contract offers to date, which wouldn't be shocking. Byrd is seeking $9 million per year. That's an awful lot to pay a safety with 4.68 speed going on age 28.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Seahawks have "emerged as the favorite" to land free agent DL Michael Bennett.
This would be bad news for the Bears, who've targeted Bennett as their top priority in free agency. Seattle has made several cap moves -- releasing Sidney Rice and Red Bryant -- ostensibly aimed at keeping Bennett off the market. The sides have until 4PM ET on Tuesday to negotiate exclusively, before Bennett can sign elsewhere. We're still not ruling out Bennett landing in Chicago.

Rotoworld:

NFL.com's Albert Breer reports free agent Jairus Byrd is still seeking more than $8 million per season, and that his asking price is "scaring some teams off."
Some reports have had Byrd seeking as much as $10 million per season, with many suggesting $9 million. The Chicago Tribune agrees with Breer that it's now closer to $8 million. Byrd wants to be the highest-paid safety in football. If Byrd escapes the first 24 hours of free agency without a deal, it won't be a good sign for his demands.

ESPN's John Clayton's "early prediction" is the Redskins will sign free agent CB Aqib Talib.
It's growing clearer and clearer that the Skins are simply going to outbid the Patriots for Talib. That would allow New England to focus its efforts on re-signing Julian Edelman. Talib is likely staring at $10 million a year.

Dustin Fox of the Browns Radio Network reports free agent SS Donte Whitner is "likely headed" to Cleveland "when the signing period begins."

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Colts' interest is "very real," and the "interest is mutual."
The Colts could use a pocket-pushing end to play across from run-stuffer Ricky Jean-Francois. Jones certainly makes sense in Indy, but the Colts have a ton of competition, including from the division-rival Titans. Jones has drawn interest from both 3-4 and 4-3 teams. He's a candidate to break the bank.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports free agent Darren McFadden is generating "significant interest."
It's not a surprise. For all McFadden's struggles and injuries, he's still a freakish physical talent. McFadden's stiff, upright running style has made him a no-go as a lead runner, but he could still be a difference maker as a change-of-pace back. He's one of the only free agent running backs with any special qualities.

Jets released WR Santonio Holmes.
It was always only a matter of when, not if, Gang Green cut Holmes. He was due a $1 million roster bonus on Thursday. The move creates $8.25 million in cap space, but also leaves behind $2.5 million in dead money. Now on the wrong side of 30, Holmes has grown increasingly injury prone, and proven to be a slow healer. His effort had become a question mark. Holmes has just 43 catches for 728 yards and two touchdowns over his past 15 games. Holmes' name is bigger than his game. He's had one 1,000-yard season in eight years. Although his talent is worth a low-cost flier, Holmes is not going to burn up the open market.

The Kansas City Star reports free agent Dexter McCluster will not be re-signing with the Chiefs, and has "4-5 suitors."
Per reporter Terez A. Paylor, McCluster is expected to have a new home by Tuesday evening. McCluster is coming off a career season, but the Chiefs are wise not to overpay. He's a gadget player who's most effective on special teams.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Bucs are the "frontrunners" for free agent DE Michael Johnson.
This isn't the first time we've seen the Bucs connected to Johnson. Tampa Bay badly needs edge rushers, and Johnson would certainly fill the role. He's expected to command over $8 million annually and is our top free agent defensive end available. Johnson is equally efficient against the run.

The Kansas City Star reports the Chiefs are interested in free agent Jason Avant.
Avant was released by the Eagles last week. The connection to Kansas City is clear; coach Andy Reid drafted Avant in Philadelphia and employed him for seven seasons. Avant would replace Dexter McCluster in the slot, though he's best suited for No. 4 receiver duties at this stage of his career.

TFY Draft Insider Tony Pauline reports "word amongst insiders" is the Jets are "going hard" after free agent CB Vontae Davis.
The Jets are in the market for a No. 1 corner after releasing Antonio Cromartie on Monday. PFT's Mike Florio reported Davis is expected to sign a contract on Tuesday, but it's not expected to be with the Colts. The Jets could be that mystery team with a substantial offer on the table. Coach Rex Ryan loves bigger, man-cover corners. Davis fits the bill at 5-foot-11, 204 pounds.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Bears are "pushing hard" to sign free agent DE Lamarr Houston.
They'll have plenty of competition. After failing to convince DE Michael Bennett to leave Seattle, the Bears are going to Plan B. Houston appears to be that. Michael Johnson may also be in the discussion. Houston, 27 in June, has also been linked to the Packers in recent days. He can play both inside and outside and is very light on his feet. The Bears are seeking Julius Peppers' replacement.

The Union-Tribune San Diego reports the Chargers are expected to express interest in free agent NT Earl Mitchell.
Mitchell has already been linked to several teams and is shaping up to be a hot commodity. The 26-year-old was a poor fit in Houston's 3-4 scheme. The Chargers also run a 3-4. Mitchell would be best served to play three-technique on his next club. San Diego is looking for it's fourth starting nose tackle in four years.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the Vikings are "definitely" out of the running for free agent DE Michael Johnson.
GM Rick Spielman inked RE Everson Griffen to a five-year, $42.5 million deal over the weekend. He'll slide in as the starter opposite LE Brian Robison. Johnson will still have a robust market without the Vikings' inclusion. After the Bears failed to sign DE Michael Bennett, they could turn to Johnson.

A "source close to the situation" informed the St. Paul Pioneer Press that it would be "shock(ing)" if free agent DE Jared Allen doesn't sign with the Broncos.
The Broncos always seemed like a logical landing spot for Allen, who has said he wants to go somewhere he has a chance to win and play meaningful snaps. With DEs Robert Ayers and Shaun Phillips free agents, there's an opening in Denver opposite Von Miller. Allen hasn't generated much buzz, yet.

Verner is willing to accept less to be one of the highest paid players on a winning team

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/10/alterraun-verner-expects-to-sign-quickly-calls-patriots-a-possibility/

“I feel more compelled to go to a team that I think can win. I haven’t had that experience for the past four years in Tennessee,” Verner said. “Money is [priority] but it isn’t. I look at it differently. Some look at it tangibly. I look at it as more of a respect value. I would feel more obliged to go to a team that paid me $6 or $7 million and made me one of the highest-paid players on the team than go to a team that paid me $8 or $9 million and I wasn’t one of the highest-paid players on the team.”

Verner said the Jets could be a fit and said the Patriots are a “possibility,” while noting that Devin McCourty, whose brother was Verner’s teammate in Tennessee, has been “lobbying” for him to come to New England. The Broncos were also mentioned as a good situation, with Verner adding he’d be interested in the 49ers but doesn’t think that’s a direction they’re looking to go.

The Giants somehow got long time veteran Chris Snee to re-sign at 1 mil from 7, then cut C Bass taking a cap hit of (difference in Snee's deal) 6 mil. Rabbit out of a hat there, zero unexpected cap implications from this.

Buccaneers signed DE Michael Johnson, formerly of the Bengals, to a five-year, $43.75 million contract.
The deal includes $24 million guaranteed, the fourth-highest figure among defensive ends. Johnson will slide in at right end opposite Adrian Clayborn in Tampa, making Da'Quan Bowers a backup. Giants re-signed RB Peyton Hillis to a two-year, $1.8 million contract.
Hillis, 28, signed off the street last year and rushed for 247 yards with two TDs on 73 carries (3.4 YPC), appearing in seven games and starting one. He should be viewed internally by the Giants as no more than an insurance policy. Hillis is a plus pass blocker, but offers no big-play ability as a runner, is in decline, and has a history of fumbling problems. He's an uninspiring re-signing.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Ravens could "make a play" for free agent C Alex Mack if they strike out on free agent LT Eugene Monroe.
A center isn't really a "backup" plan to an elite pass-protecting left tackle like Monroe. Rapoport's colleague, Mike Silver, also mentions the Bucs as a possible landing spot for Mack. The Browns slapped Mack with the transition tag, which means they only have the right of first refusal. Cleveland wouldn't get any compensation if Mack signs elsewhere. Mack played for Bucs OC Jeff Tedford in college. The Ravens badly need to upgrade on C Gino Gradkowski.

Focusing On The Center

Peter King

Excerpt:

Alex Mack is young, gifted and ... available? With cash-rich teams ready to spend when free agency begins today, the Browns could be at risk of losing their transition-tagged leader with no compensation. Plus, readers send in their mailSuppose, at the dawn of free agency today at 4 p.m. ET, you could buy a 28-year-old player, injury-free and a solid leader. All analysts would say this guy is a top-five player at his position, with seven or eight prime seasons ahead. Suppose he wanted to leave his current team and would structure a contract to make that happen. Suppose he’d been in the NFL for 80 games and started every one of them. And suppose you could do a deal with this player for, say, about 8 percent of your salary cap over the next four or five years.

And suppose the average NFL team, as of this morning, has $21.3 million to spend under the salary cap.

It would be tempting.

That is the case of center Alex Mack.

The Browns took a chance with Mack in the days before free agency dawned, placing the little-used transition tag on him rather than the costlier (by $1 million) franchise tag. Cleveland would get first-round draft-choice compensation if Mack had been franchised and jumped to a new team. But with the transition tag, the rules are different. The Browns committed to paying Mack $10 million in 2014, the average of the 10 highest-paid offensive linemen; if another team makes Mack a contract offer, Cleveland would have five days to match. If the Browns match, they would retain Mack. If they didn’t match, they’d lose him, and would get nothing in compensation from the signing team.

Late Monday, Mack’s agent, Marvin Demoff, told me he thinks he could write a deal that would be tough for the Browns to match. He also said he has not spoken with any teams about Mack, in compliance with the rules that say players who get transition-tagged cannot speak to any interested teams until the free-agent signing period opens.

“I’m confident we can come up with a structure that would have a reasonable likelihood to not be matched by the Browns—and would be in full compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement,’’ Demoff said by phone from his Los Angeles office.

(Fairness in journalism here: Demoff is also my agent. Each time I write about a client of his, I make sure you know of the potential conflict of interest, so you can make your own decision whether to believe I am writing the story fairly or not. In this case, you might believe I am writing this column strictly to help Demoff drum up business for Mack. But I feel writing about it shines a light on a player who might be, other than Jimmy Graham, the best player at his position on the market this season, and in a free-agency season in which teams have more money under the cap collectively than they have in years, I believe a column about Mack is valid.)

How will Demoff structure such an offer sheet? That’s publicly unknown right now, but clearly it has to be a structure that lives within in the rules of the CBA—and doesn’t contain a so-called fluky “poison pill’’ clause that some teams have tried to insert in contracts for tagged free-agent players in the past. The poison pill happened in 2006, when transition-tagged Seattle guard Steve Hutchinson was signed to a seven-year, $49-million deal with Minnesota, and the Vikings put in a clause saying the pact would be totally guaranteed if Hutchinson was not the highest-paid offensive lineman on his team. At the time, Walter Jones was the highest-paid Seahawks offensive lineman, so Seattle couldn’t match. The ’Hawks filed a grievance and lost Hutchinson to Minnesota. That deal led the league to forbid clauses specifically designed for the original team to be unable to match.

So if Demoff has an idea up his sleeve, one he is currently unwilling to publicize to other teams till today at 4 p.m., it’s likely he’s researched it and found it passes NFL muster. Any such offer would have to be painful or overly restrictive to Cleveland, a team that has enough money to match any deal and clearly has a ton of respect for Mack—but also a team that has had multiple chances to re-sign Mack and hasn’t gotten it done.

The most likely team to pursue Mack is cash-rich Jacksonville, with a center (Brad Meester) who just retired and a gaping hole there. But I don’t believe the Jags would want to pay a center gigantic money.

We’ll see if another team steps up. If I had to guess, I’d guess no team would step up to give Mack an offer sheet. But if one does, it will be one of the great stories of a wealthy free-agency season.

TFY Draft Insider Tony Pauline reports the Bears are facing "little competition" in their pursuit of free agent DE Lamarr Houston.
Chicago is widely viewed as the frontrunners for Houston's services after missing out on Michael Bennett and Michael Johnson, but it's kind of surprising Houston isn't getting much play. That can all change in a matter of minutes, however. Houston is our No. 1 available free-agent defensive end.

CSN Bay Area reports the Giants have made an offer to free agent Rashad Jennings.
Per reporter Fallon Smith, Jennings is "waiting on Oakland to make their move now." The Giants re-signed Peyton Hillis to a two-year, $1.8 million contract Tuesday, but definitely need another body or two in their backfield. Depending on David Wilson's health, Jennings would have lots of touches at his disposal in New York.
