2014 Oakland Raiders Regular Season Thread (2 Viewers)

I realize this is a rookie QB on the road, but they did not challenge the Jet corners at all. Never was and still not a Greg Olsen fan.

Didn't even occur to me that there was a problem with play-calling. I guess I would have liked to see him whipping it around downfield, But with no running game, not sure how untracked the offense could get. Raiders were in the game the whole time with the rookie QB on the road, I can't get too upset.

Rush defense didn't look great, they need to tighten that up. Lot of young LBs, and they sprung some leaks.

Really happy with what Carr did, and really happy with the lack of penalties.

They almost stole a game, and I thought there were a lot of young guys that played well. Arrow is pointing up. JMO.

Exactly. Nice post.

Random notes on individual players:

Raiders rotated D-linemen quite a bit. McGee, and to a lesser extent, Jelly, got some PT. Sims is feast or famine, looks like McGee is gonna try and keep the big fella from passing out in the 3rd quarter. Didn't see Shelby at all, but that #58 guy got some PT.

Antonio Smith: Good. Tuck and Woodley, not so much.

All three LBs had missteps in the running game, but that'll come. Sio Moore and Mack give this team some really, really nice young LBs. Mack was very close to making big plays more than a few times.

Charles Woodson. Amazing.

TJ Carrie held up OK, I thought.

Great to see Tyvon back, but I hate his celebration dance.

2 sacks. O-line held up well. If I do have a play-calling complaint, it's that I wish we had run more straight ahead stuff, and try and mash a bit more. Too much finesse runs.

Rivera had a nice game.

McFadden seems like a forgotten man. Nice nostalgia play wdhere he tried to make a cut, and slipped to the ground. Nice to see he still has that patented move in his toolbox.

The Raiders had zero turnovers and 4 minor penalties for a total of 20 yards.

The Jets had two disastrous turnovers and 11 penalties for 105 yards.

If you can't take that and turn it into a win, I am not sure you are going to win many games.

Geno was 23/28. Only 5 incompletions and there were receivers wide open pretty much the whole game. They won't win many games playing defense like that. If Smith can pick apart that secondary, imagine what a good QB will do.

This.

Hoping the new players come together, and I think the D improves, but it has a LOT of room to improve.

Very little pressure today. Tuck was invisible.

And what was up with MJD? How can a guy look so good in preseason, then 2 weeks later look so bad? I get that the OL wasn't doing their job and the Jets front is pretty formidable, but still, he looked really tentative and that's giving him credit.

Enough of Mr. Negative for now... The bright side: Derek Carr might finally be the QB of the future the Raiders have been looking for since Rich Gannon retired. I thought he came out fired up and did pretty well on the road against a good defense. Really can't fault him for the playcalling.

I'm just not angry at the Raiders being skittish about Carr dropping back deep behind three new O-line starters, in his first game, on the road, and chucking it.

The fact that a criticism is that the Raiders didn't turn Carr speaks well to the kid.

I was a huge fan of that Jones TD. Flicked a touch pass 30+ yards, right where he wanted it, and it could only have been a TD or an incompletion. Threw most of the short stuff on target. Had a couple bad passes, but never seemed truly rattled.

I agree Mass.... I saw a leader being born out there today. He was fired up and he never seemed rattled to me either. He didn't have a bad game at all. He had no run support and the pass protection was suspect at times. He did well for a rook in his first game. It might be another down year, but I hope they finally found their signal-caller and team leader.

And it's funny how all sorts of bad things improve when you have a QB. Fingers crossed.

I'm a bit angry about that, but first game I am not going to go nuts. They went to Carr because he has the arm to make all the throws and gives them the best chance to win then they install a gameplan that does not take advantage of that and does not attack the other teams biggest weakness.

I agree, it's possible the Raiders coaches are underestimating him. They played not to lose.

We got some good news elsewhere. Looks like no Cowney next week, we just gotta kidnap Watt before Sunday.

Finally, after 10 plus years the QB position is not part of the problem, its the solution (I hope!). Now build around him and get a defense for crying out loud! If they didn't allow that 71 yard TD run Jones's TD catch would have been the game winner.

I agree -- how about this for a silver lining...

If the Colts can somehow pull a miracle tonight, there's a great chance there will be a 4-way tie for first/last!

I get the feeling most of you were like me, holding your breath watching Carr hoping he does not get complete crushed by the Jets defense. Thankfully that did not happen because it would be a big set back for the organization. But now that I watched the game again I can say start your Texans this week with confidence.

The defense is brutal and the Raiders were very lucky to not be down 28-7 at halftime. Counting preseason the defense has given up scores in opening drives five straight games. The CBs might be the worst in the league. Tackling is atrocious. Moore was pretty disruptive but missed a lot of tackles. Mack flashed some ability but needs to do it on a more consistent basis to justify his draft position. Woodson still has some game. Our only hope is to improve the pass rush and hope that Hayden can play.

I initially thought the play calling was the issue on offense, but they were forced to throw short because the OL was doing a very poor job. Why the hell is Barnes playing RT? Too many tipped passes, too many sacks. I can't tell if MJD is shot or the OL is not opening holes, I suspect it is a little of both. D. Moore played small and Jones got very few opportunities. Rivera and Streeter flashed some ability but they didn't get enough opportunities.

Carr needs a lot of work on his game under center. His footwork on the screen game is very poor, and he does not look comfortable throwing between the hash marks. He was lucky he didn't throw two INTs.

Moving forward, the staff needs to get Carr throwing from the gun more and let him throw more to the sidelines. Use Rivera over the middle and get Murray some playing. Let Carr play to his strengths!

Lots of rose colored glasses going on in here.

4.7 yards per attempt for Carr. First game forgiveness (particularly on the road) and all that applies but that is still bad, like worse than Joey Harrington bad.

Carr needs to demonstrate the confidence to challenge defenses down field and he needs to do it quick, fast and in a hurry. And if the coaching staff is too chicken #### to allow him to do that then he will be broken possibly beyond repair long before they can get a competent coaching staff to come in there and fix him.

How the hell does Greg Olson keep getting employed in the NFL? Serious question. What has he ever done? "His" best offense was in St. Louis in 2006 and we all know it was Linehan who was coaching that offense. Beyond that his offenses have been nothing but crap.

He is the kind of hire that an insecure head coach makes because he knows the team won't fire the HC midseason with such a mediocre OC as one of the primary potential replacements.

It was a terrible hire last year and it looks like it will remain the way in 2014. Raider fans better accept the fact that, barring an actual act of God (I'm talking like the skies parting and the Monty Python God hand coming down and smacking opposing teams defensive players out of the way type of act of God) the actual rebuilding process won't begin (can't begin actually) until the next regime is hired.

Agree with a lot being said -- Carr did admirably all things said. Solid, did not appear shaken in his first NFL start, and did well shouldering the load in the complete absence of any semblance of a running game.

Worst part of the team looked to be the D-line, who did not generate a pass rush. Terrible tackling across the board, but the "investments" in old over-the-hill d-lineman actually appeared to set us back rather than help.

Another long year, but if this year is the crucible for Carr, hopefully next year -- with the exit of Reggie and Allen in favor of people who can rebuild around Carr and Mack properly, a new stadium on the way...who knows? Maybe we even get Gruden back....

Wont matter if Carr gets broken beyond repair this year. He's going to be something special if he can overcome one of the worst offensive coordinators in NFL history. Then again knowing the Raiders they'll replace Olson with Rich Kotite.

I pointed this out last year after the hire was announced. As I was watching the game again when the camera panned to Olsen I couldn't help but think of Gregg Knapp because of his slicked back hair and poor offensive scheme based on personnel.

No, the Olsen hire was an upgrade over Knapp, as sad as that sunds. If DA and Olsen an ounce of common sense they will move to a spread offense, otherwise we are looking at another double digit losing season.

I am not sure Reggie gets the ax regardless because Carr and Mack look like solid picks.

My early vote for a hire if DA is fired is Pat Schumur. He has previous HC experience and working is a system perfect for Carr's skill set.

Another coach I am really starting to question is Sparano. I suspect he had some say in the decision to not tag Valdheer. I haven't really seen a lot of improvement in the OL play over the the last year+, and we still have Barnes starting.

:wall:

Bah Knapp and Olson suck equally. And no way are they switching to anything other than the crap offense they are currently rolling out there. They are too stubborn to be creative. They're going to make Derek Carr every bit as gun shy as Houston made his brother.

And Carr did not look good vs the Jets, he was bad, very bad. 4.7 yards per attempt is historically bad.

team looked pretty bad. it's not too often one sees passes being caught without a defender visible on the screen. it's gonna be fugly when we face big time qb's.

This is what I've been saying. Geno Smith isn't even a good QB and he was 23/28 passing. Even Fitzpatrick/Johndon this week is a scarier combo than Smith/Decker. Its going to be an ugly season more so due the defense than a rookie QB.

Hey I know, bring back Greg Knapp for a 3rd time. 3rd times a charm right???

Or bring back that guy who came out of retirement who owns the bed and breakfast. What was his name? Walsh? What a disaster that guy was.
