2014 Oakland Raiders Regular Season Thread (1 Viewer)

Walter Football keeps track of draft rumors as they happen. Funny stuff:

3/18: "No telling what Raiders brain trust thinks of QBs. Liked the way Bridgewater conducted self at combine. May not be sold on QB at No. 5." - Jerry McDonald, Oakland Tribune

3/17: "The word leaving pro-day is 'connecting the dots' Bridgewater ends up with the Oakland Raiders in round one." - Tony Pauline

3/8: Sam Farmer of the LA Times believes it's realistic that Derek Carr would be Oakland's first-round pick.

3/8: The Raiders want to trade back in the 2014 NFL Draft, according to Todd McShay.

3/3: The Raiders will pass on Teddy Bridgewater if he's available, according to John Middlekauff, 957 The Game.

3/2: "The Raiders are known for their unconventional picks, so Manziel might seem like a natural fit for them. Word is, though, that they liked Carr more coming out of the combine." - Sam Farmer, LA Times

2/24: "Mark Davis and #Raiders brass met with Johnny Manziel over the weekend. MD came away very impressed." - Eddie Borsilli, SiriusXM NFL Radio Producer

So there you have it!

Cardinals are signing Cromartie. If you put any stock in PFF ratings, or previous teams' desire to retain free agents, we should be happy he's not commend coming to Oakland.

Every time I read that the Raiders will take Carr at #5 I cringe and think, no way, these press guys are idiots.

Then I recall thinking the same when I read that they'd take Jamarcus at #1, DHB at #7 and most recently Hayden at #3 and I .

I've mentally prepared myself for Carr at #5, followed by a trade for Matt Schaub to, of course, show Carr how to be a ####ty NFL QB. Wee!

Matt Schaub targeted by Oakland RaidersBy Chris Wesseling

Around the League Writer

General manager Reggie McKenzie has a "really good idea" who his next quarterback will be, but he's not giving away any hints.

NFL Media columnist Michael Silver may have just cracked that code.

The Raiders want Matt Schaub, Silver noted on Thursday. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport previously had reported that the Houston Texans quarterback is on McKenzie's radar.

Schaub is being shopped by the Texans, per Rapoport, but interested teams such as the Raiders, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets are not likely to take action until he's released.

Around The League's Marc Sessler recently sent Schaub to Oakland as one of the best remaining fits in free agency. If Schaub ends up reuniting with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Cleveland, though, McKenzie could turn to Josh Freeman or Mark Sanchez.

We're not sure any of the reclamation projects above will give the Raiders a better chance to win than Terrelle Pryor.

The latest "Around The League Podcast" breaks down DeSean Jackson trade rumors and tries to figure out who will be next year's Michael Bennett (or Brent Grimes).

DeSean Jackson - WR - Eagles
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Panthers and Raiders have also inquired on DeSean Jackson.
They join the Jets, 49ers and Patriots as teams known to have looked in on the Eagles' No. 1 receiver. Predictably, the Eagles have denied that D-Jax is on the block, but at the very least, teams think he can be had. It's still possible the Eagles aren't actively shopping Jackson, but simply taking calls on his availability. Jackson's odds of remaining in Philly are looking no better than 50-50.

@AdamSchefter: Oakland Raiders now are expected to trade a 2014 late-round pick to Houston Texans in exchange for QB Matt Schaub, per league source.
I'm not a big fan of paying Schaub his scheduled $11 million contract for 2014. Too much dough for a "bridge QB".
Agreed. I hope this comes with an opportunity to renegotiate that contract.
translation......i hope the front office learned its lesson after the Carson Palmer fiasco

I like getting Matt Schaub as a bridge QB I think he is the best of what is available, not a believer in Michael Vick. That being said, I also hope that if/when traded for Matt Schaub comes with a contract renegotiation.

They did...they are not giving up a 1st rounder this time

Less than $1 million in guaranteed money for Schaub. If he sucks in training camp and rookie 2nd/3rd looks good, Raiders can cut him.

The Raiders are obligated to hit the salary minimums under the CBA, otherwise they are subject to the penalties under the CBA. I suspect that they will renegotiate Schaub's contract; however, the drop in salary likely wont be as much if Schaub was going to almost any other team.

Rotoworld take:

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Texans are expected to trade Matt Schaub to the Raiders for a late-round pick in the 2014 draft.
Oakland will take on Schaub's $11 million, which makes him the heavy favorite to start Week 1. GM Reggie McKenzie has been rumored to be hot on Schaub's tail for a while now. He had to forfeit the draft pick because the Browns were also going to make a push for the soon-to-be 33-year-old had he been released. With Schaub now in the fold, the Raiders have options with the No. 5 overall pick in May. The Texans save nearly $4 million in cap space.

I think Schaub still has something to offer. But I'm just lost on this Raider offseason. I just don't see them moving forward at all. They need good, young players more than any team in the league and they have not added one. This is most likely a 4 win team again.

THAT'S the spirit !!!!!

the only fiasco with Palmer was getting rid of him. They traded him to save money when they didn't need to save it and ended up with horrible options as a result. Now, less than a year later, they are swimming in money and have to turn to Matt freaking Schaub. And their return was laughable for how well Palmer played last year. That team went from joke to 10-6 from improved QB play alone. I hope it doesn't happen, but I suspect they give up more for Schaub than they got for Palmer.

More than a 1st rounder?

I think 5th round is the ceiling on what they gave up.

EDIT: Never mind, I get what you mean.

If we got a 6th and gave up a 5th, whatever. Small potatos.

We don't have a 5th so it will either be a 6th round pick or a 7th round pick for Schaub.

Aha. Nice.

Agreed. This team is better just not built for the long haul yet.

With adding Schaub my guess is they want to move out of the 5th spot.

Report: Raiders believe Matt McGloin is a capable backupPosted by Mike Wilkening on March 21, 2014, 12:28 PM EDT

The Raiders’ pending acquisition of Texans quarterback Matt Schaub seemingly pushes Matt McGloin to a reserve spot on the depth chart.

And the Raiders are said to be quite comfortable with that.

According to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Raiders “like Matt McGloin a lot” as a reserve. However, the club judged prospective QB additions on whether they were better than the 24-year-old McGloin, who threw for 1,547 yards with eight TDs and eight interceptions in seven games (six starts) in 2013.

With Schaub expected to join the Raiders and McGloin reportedly well-liked as a reserve, the matter of Terrelle Pryor’s future with Oakland would seem to be the next unresolved issue at quarterback. Pryor began 2013 as the starter but lost the role to McGloin.

That could be true. I actually saw it the other way. By locking up the QB before the draft, the Raiders now have options with that 5th pick. They either take the BPA and start that building for the long haul or if someone gives them something they can have the flexibility to move out. I don't see how they can trade down if Sammy is there at 5.

The way I look at it is, there's a QB they want. They have 'their guy'. But there's no guarantee they get him. Schaub is the vet, the starter, unless he gets beat out by a rookie.

I figure all the teams have their guy. Houston is going to get theirs. Jacksonville, Cleveland, Minny, I assume they all like at least one of the QBs. But if you are Cleveland, and Manziel is your guy, if Jax takes him, you aren't just going to take Teddy because he's the next guy.

It's looking more and more like QBs are going to be there when we pick. All the mocks now will have Teddy falling to us, and who would have thought that two months ago?

I wish I watched these guys more in college, to have an informed opinion, but I don't. All I know is, I want one.

Bortles and Manziel make me nervous, I still want Teddy.

I like Teddy too. But I got a nervous pang in my stomach that Reggie will take Carr at 5. He just looks the part. Like Jim Drunkenmiller looked the part.

Moved up from 7 to 6 in 2013 and a 7 in 2014. And took a downgrade in the process. And went through 2013 with Flynn/Pryor/McGloin. I don't dislike Schaub per se (although he was TERRIBLE last year and never really "great" before that), but there was just no reason to move Palmer when they did.

I don't know what there is to not like about Carr. Had a less than great day vs. USC, but has a better arm than the other three, and doesn't have the size questions of Teddy and Johnny.

Just going by the rankings now, I'd prefer a trade down if they like Carr, but the draft is a month away. The Texans could draft Carr. And none of these mocks right now has the top 5 right. Guaranteed.

Johnny Football could go 1 or 21. Bortles could go 1 or 8.

The draftniks all have herd mentality, one guy hears from a scout that this guy or that is moving up, and everyone adjusts. Then everyone that reads the rankings takes the latest ranking as gospel. Every week they change, and every week people don't even question them!!

Palmer took less money to leave. He wasn't having it here.

Take a look at this chart http://: http://i.imgur.com/db0HWPQ.jpg and you'll see that Carr looks like a checkdown charlie compared to the big 3 (Bortles, Manziel and Bridgewater). His passes fluttered and sailed whenever there was pitter patter around his feet in that SC bowl game. In controlled workouts and 7 on 7 practices, he looks like an elite QB. But put some pressure in his face and he's not the same guy.

And maybe it's overblown. I still remember the Marc Wilson era when we had a decent team and Marc would move the team between the twenties and call timeouts in his own stadium b/c he couldn't deal with the crowd noise. Third downs in the red zone and he fold up like a cheap carpet. I'm afraid that Carr is Wilson part 2. Also not feeling his brother always tagging along to rob his spotlight. He's ok with that. I want a starting QB to be his own man, have a little moxie and grab the glory while the light's shining on him. He ended up puking his guts out the night before his pro day and bigger brother fielding questions from the media in his absense. For his own good, he needs to tell his brother to step aside and make his own impression. I don't doubt his arm strength, size, mobility to be elite, he's got all the tools. He just needs to prove he is a leader. Apart from that awful USC bowl game, he's never won a meaningful game in his life.

Derek Carr played in a pro-style offense his first three years at Fresno State. To me if you really want to know what he can do find film from 2012. They moved to a spread offense in 2013.

Read an interesting tweet, that all ten of the Raiders free agents will have no dead money on next years cap. If Woodley or Penn suck, there's no future hit.

I remember reading a quote from a scout that said something along the lines of, "It's too bad his brother is David Carr, or people would be talking about him as the top pick."

I also have been reading that none of these QBs are worth first rounders, and McShay said he ranks all four over Geno Smith. I love the draft. Nothing but :bs:
