I have a hard time seeing Houston take Derek Carr considering what happend with David Carr in Houston. I could be wrong though. So unless a team jumps us Carr just may be a Raider.

Interesting. Didn't even think of that, but franchises do tend to be superstitious.

 
Houston will not take Carr.

It's Cleveland, they are going to shop that 2.03 from right now until 7:15pm Eastern tomorrow. If anyone else wants Carr they have a willing trade partner.

I am writing off any hopes of a QB after the Vikings doing what I think Oakland should have done.

I am seeing the Vikings paid the 40th pick and 108th pick for 32nd.

If so, glad Oakland passed; that price is too steep.

Khalil Mack, LB, Oakland Raiders
The Raiders had to be the happiest team that Bortles went #3 to Jacksonville, as their choice would leave them with either Watkins or Mack. Mack was a no brainer choice for a Raiders team that is desperately seeking young, explosive talent. With old heads LaMarr Woodley and Justin Tuck on board, Mack can learn at their feet and may become the quarterback of the defense by season’s end. He’s been compared favorably with Von Miller and has far less character concerns than Miller does. Mack’s the early front runner for Defensive Rookie Of The Year.

Oakland Raiders: Khalil Mack, DE/OLB, Buffalo: A+ Grade
Absolutely love this pick. Khalil Mack was the No. 2 prospect in the 2014 NFL Draft, so the Raiders are getting great value with the fifth pick, thanks to Jacksonville's incompetence. Reggie McKenzie signed a bunch of aging pass-rushers this offseason, but they need young blood at the position. Mack might even have a bit of a chip on his shoulder after falling to No. 5, so that makes this selection even sweeter.

 
Really wanted Teddy, you have to wonder which QB the Raiders like. Everyone SAYS Carr, but what if it's Garroppolo or Savage in the 3rd?

That's a bit harsh. The Jags have had a rough go at the position. If they identified Bortles as a can't-miss answer for them, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I'm glad they did it, don't get me wrong. But if he turns out to be another Big Ben, people will be talking about what a genius move it was. They likely didn't want to risk trading back.

 
With Mack available, Raiders keep pick

Reggie McKenzie said he fielded some phone calls Thursday night from teams interested in trading for the Raiders’ first pick at No. 5 in the NFL draft.

Then Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack became available.

“Once Khalil fell to us, we had a couple of calls,’’ McKenzie said. “At that point, I wasn’t taking ‘em.’’

Mack was only the third linebacker ever taken in the first round by the Raiders, following Rolando McClain (No. 8 in 2010) and Rob Fredrickson (No. 22 in 1994).

But it was clear listening to coach Dennis Allen that while Mack is listed as a linebacker, his primary responsibility will be rushing the passer.

At 6-foot-3, 251 pounds, Allen compared Mack to Von Miller, who was the second overall selection out of Texas A&M when he was defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos in 2011.

Miller was the NFL defensive rookie of the year with 11.5 sacks, had 18.5 sacks in his second season and has 35 sacks in 40 NFL games.

“The thing that was really attractive about Khalil Mack is he understands how to rush the passer, and he understands how to rush the passer with power,’’ Allen said. “I see a lot of similarities between he and Von Miller.’

Mack has also been compared with Green Bay outside linebacker Clay Matthews, who was drafted by the Packers when McKenzie was a personnel executive.

At Buffalo of the Mid-America conference, Mack started 48 games with 28.5 sacks, 75 tackles for losses and an NCAA career record of 16 forced fumbles. It helped that Mack was dominant against Ohio State in the season opener in 2013 with 2.5 sacks, nine tackles and a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown.

“It had to do very well for my stock . . . just knowing the stage it was on, knowing it was the first game of the year and they were ranked so high, it benefited me a lot,’’ Mack said.

Jadaveon Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick by Houston out of South Carolina, was generally considered the top defensive player available, but Mack had his supporters _ NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock among them. Mack said at the NFL scouting combine he indeed considered himself No. 1.

Still does, as a matter of fact.

“I think that I am, but even then I’m at the point now where I’m tired of talking and I want to go out and start proving a little bit if this tuff everybody’s been talking about. I can’t wait. I cannot wait.’’

Linebacker was the only position group where the Raiders returned all three starters _ Sio Moore on the strong side, Nick Roach in the middle and Kevin Burnett on the weak side.

Allen wasn’t getting into specifics as to how Mack would be used, but he called him a “three-down player’’ and made it clear much would be expected of the rookie.

“I’m not going to get into exactly where he’s going to play,’’ Allen said. “I’ll tell you this _ he’s going to obviously have a big role in what we’re going to do and he’ll be a guy that we’re going to use to send after the quarterback in a variety of different ways.’’

Mack said Allen spoke of his role in general terms.

“We discussed having my hand down, discussed playing a little outside linebacker,’’ Mack said. “I’m ready, man. I’m ready to go play football.’’

Coming out of Westwood High in in Ft. Pierce, Fla., Mack wasn’t heavily recruited. It’s a slight he said he carries to this day for motivation.

When the Buffalo Bills traded for Cleveland’s pick at No. 4, it occurred to Mack he may not have to change zip codes.

When asked by a reporter if he was afraid he would have to spend his whole life in Buffalo, Mack laughed heartily.

“I was like, `Yo, I’ve got a lease right now up in Buffalo. I might be keeping it,’ ‘’ Mack said. “That’s crazy.’’
 
So many options available with their 2nd round pick. If the Raiders really covet Carr (I'm in the Houston won't touch him with a 10' pole camp) Reggie will have to be proactive. Teams are probably on the phones right now trying to jump in front of them. If all else fails I wouldn't mind Sua filo, Kjuanjo (spelling is wrong I know, but its late) or Lee/Latimer at WR.

 
@RapSheet: If Sammy Watkins had fallen to No. 5, the #Lions feel they would’ve been able to trade for him. Instead, #Bills made the move at No. 4.

I would love Xavier Su'a-Filo in the Second. He is in my opinion the best Guard in this draft and will be a Pro-Bowl Guard for years. However, I don't see the Raiders passing up on Carr if he is there at pick #36 in the second round.

 
Carr will be there for the Raiders at pick 36 if they want him, I don't doubt. Not even sure that they go with Carr. Some realy good WRs still on the board. Lee, Latimer, Matthews, Robinson. That's just at the WR position. there are plenty more names that were worthy of a late first round pick, and staring at us now. Reggie only has four decent picks. He needs to make each one count. I'm convinced it wasn't about getting outbid for Teddy. They simply didn't want him. We'll see if they want Carr, but the smart mov in my opinion is to let the board come to him. There's a plethora of options at 36.

Oakland Raiders: Khalil Mack (5th)
The skinny: It's very strange to see the Raiders all the way up here in rarefied air, but it happens from time to time. They got lucky with Jacksonville going with a quarterback, and like the Texans, they didn't overthink things and nabbed Mack. He should be a huge weapon in the AFC West, giving Oakland a player some think could be the best in the draft.

I would also bet that Carr is there.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a trade down, and Carr STILL be there.

For what it's worth, here's what I heard from the inside.

First of all, the Mack pick was a surprising windfall. While obviously something that was planned for, Mack falling to 5 wasn't considered a very strong possibility. Put Oakland in the camp that liked him better than Clowney. So when Reggie says he wasn't fielding calls for the 5 pick once Mack fell, he isn't kidding. And don't believe the Detroit buzz. If Watkins was there at 5, Oakland was taking him unless they got a sweetheart deal. I was specifically told that while Oakland really wanted Watkins, they are pleasantly pleased they got Mack and kept their other moves,

Now, like I have been saying for months, Carr is the QB Oakland covets. They like others, but Carr is their guy. I have soft info that Oakland wasn't outbid for Bridgewater, they didn't have serious interest in him. This is a new regime and while Oakland really wants Carr, they aren't going to mortgage the future and give up picks to move up and get him. If Carr isn't there at 2.5, look for Oakland to trade down.

Thanks for the inside info S&B. Really appreciated. My only gripe is you don't post more here. The soft info that Oakland didn't want Teddy Bridgewater just feels true. You never saw them connected to reports they were high on him. As much as I liked Teddy Bridgewater, as a fan, I don't get to see the real tape that Reggie sees. I think the target is Carr, and a trade down is a possibility, but there's so much talent still on the board. If Reggie decides to trade down, it better be a sweet deal to talk himself out of Carr.

Which is why I think a trade down is almost guaranteed to not happen. I think teams are looking around, saying, 'man, lost of guys here we like.'

My guess: O'Brien has a deal in principle with Pats for Mallet (Where he used to work), Carr is ours for the taking, and teams are willing to let the draft come to them.

There were some pretty serious reaches in 2nd half of that 1st round, this is still the 1st round as far as I am concerned.

So by the time the dust cleared on the first round Thursday night, Bortles, who was taken third overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars, was joined by Johnny Manziel, who fell to 22nd and the Cleveland Browns, and Teddy Bridgewater, who went 32nd in the final pick of the night to the Minnesota Vikings, who traded up to get him.

Might Fresno State’s Derek Carr, who has long been linked to the Raiders, still be on the docket when Oakland is scheduled to make the fourth pick of the night, No. 36 overall, or will the Houston Texans, who badly need a quarterback and lead off the second round, make it a family affair by drafting the younger brother of the man they made the first overall pick in 2002, David Carr?

From the Raiders’ perspective, it’s no secret they believe they are set with Matt Schaub for at least the next two years, and they even feel comfortable with backups Matt McGloin and Trent Edwards. But the feeling is also they would like to draft a project in the middle rounds, someone like Pittsburgh’s Tom Savage. Currently, the Raiders’ fourth-round pick is at No. 107 overall.

One plausible scenario has the Raiders, who do not have picks in the fifth or sixth rounds but hold three in the seventh, trading back in the second round to acquire more selections, especially if they are not truly in love with a player at No. 4 in the second round today.

McKenzie, though, said “no deal was presented, only interest” for the No. 5 overall pick on Thursday. With it not clear if there will be a market today for the Raiders’ second-rounder, they have options.

Mack certainly addressed a need and was the best player available as well.

So, besides Carr, who passed for 5,082 yards with 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions and completed 68.7 percent of his passes in 13 starts last season, who is a potential target for the Raiders in the second round?

Here is a look at five possible prospects:

USC receiver Marqise Lee was the 2012 Biletnikoff Award winner as a sophomore, but had a down junior year. At just under 6-foot and 192 pounds, there are questions about his durability, but he is a playmaker after the catch.

Alabama offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio is massive at 6-7, 321 pounds, but there are concerns about his surgically repaied knee. He is considered an ideal fit to work in a power-blocking scheme.

Minnesota defensive tackle Ra'Shede Hageman is a disruptive if inconsistent force at a tick under 6-6 and 310 pounds. His athleticism might force a move to defensive end.

Utah cornerback Keith McGill is big at 6-3, 213 pounds, and his long arms make him an ideal fit for press coverage. Still, he only had one interception in two seasons for the Utes.

Nebraska cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste is also big for the position at 6-3, 218 pounds and had seven interceptions in 19 starts for the Cornhuskers.

 
Su'a Filo, Matthews, Hageman are the BPAs heading into Rd 2, IMO. I would be very happy with Su'a Filo. Dude is a ten-year+ stud starter at G and would bring a nasty element to our OL.

Please, please, please someone, anyone trade ahead of us and take the Daviderrick Carr bullet.

Very annoyed that we could have Bridgewater right now on a five year rookie deal by only having to give up our 2nd and 4th rounders. And if what S&B says it true, I'm extremely concerned about Reggie rating Carr ahead of TB. Before you jump on me for implying that I know more than an NFL GM, it's my opinion, that's all, but I've seen too many bad calls in years past to still believe that NFL GMs know what they are doing. Most of them don't. I'm losing faith in Reg.

I was right there with you on the Teddy Bridgewater bandwagon. But I have to admit, the knowledge I have of these prospects is mostly youtube cutups and hearsay of "credible" draft scouts. Reggie and DA have the full coaches tape and can see things that the talking heads even aren't always privy to. No doubt some media have that all access pass, but then they also have an agenda. I have criticized Derek Carr mercillessly here in the SP and have produced a lot of damning evidence. But I can't ignore all the positives I hear and have seen from the youtube cutups. He's got the arm-talent that's rare. His mechanics can sure use some work, no doubt. And athletically, he's on par with the much ballyhooed Manziel. Talent alone, there's no reason he should still be on the board in the second round. If Reggie decides to get him, I won't blink an eye. I trust that Reggie has done a whole lot more homework on Carr than you or I will ever do.

 
real happy that we had mack drop to us. hype levels when jags took bortles went through the roof. tend to agree with people posting above that reggie ought to have attempted to trade up to seattle's spot to land bridgewater, and just hope it was a case of minnesota making a better offer.

as for this next pick, don't want carr. would quite like to trade down and grab an extra pick if possible, things are still plenty deep in positions of need so i'd look to address as many of them as possible. that said, so long as we don't take carr i don't mind just grabbing BPA if we can't move out of #36

 
Wait, why wouldn't the Texans take Carr? Let's be realistic here and avoid hyperbole that they've already failed with one Carr before -- I can't see that truly being a blocker to any professional NFL franchise.

This is a position of need for the Texans. They definitely need more of a plan at QB than their current stable of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, and T.J. Yates. O'Brien is on record saying that he and Rick Smith didn't see a clear cut Top 3 QB in this year's draft class, and they could easily value Carr as much as they do others like McCarron, Savage, Mettenberger, etc.

I don't know why, but I have a feeling that if the Raiders are betting on Carr dropping, they are safer moving up, and really should have done so with Bridgewater.

I lost faith long ago. Reggie got lucky Mack fell to him. Even a blind squirrel finds a coconut once in awhile...especially when the coconut hits him in the head.

I'm with you that Reggie should have made a try for Bridgewater.

I'm sure they want Carr at 36 but I don't think they'll get him if they sit in that spot. I think Houston takes him or Cleveland trades out of 35.

Back to losing faith. Reggie's in his third draft. What does he have to show for it? One solid foundational piece. That's it. Not good. Most of the free agents he's gotten this year are older stop-gap players. The players he's drafted have shown to be no more than fringe NFL players thus far.

One solid foundational piece. At this rate, the Raiders will be contenders in 2032.
