2014 Oakland Raiders Regular Season Thread (3 Viewers)

Linehan is an interesting coaching candidate. He brings some offensive knowledge that made Dallas a potent offense. Of course, more weapons like Amari Cooper are still needed, but I like the idea of building around our franchise QB Carr.

From rotoworld:

Sources tell NBC4 that Mike Shanahan interviewed for the Raiders head coaching vacancy.
Shanahan has also garnered interest from the Bills and 49ers. The Oakland interview with Mark Davis and other team officials is a bit of a surprise as Shanny's first go-around with the organization was a short-lived disaster. He clashed with Al Davis and was fired just four games into his second season as coach (1989). Time has obviously healed wounds. The Raiders have also been linked to Tony Sparano, Jack Del Rio, Pat Shurmur, Eric Mangini, Todd Bowles, Pep Hamilton, Scott Linehan and Darrell Bevell.

Rotoworld:

ESPN Raiders reporter Bill Williamson suggests restricted free agent Andre Holmes could garner interest from other teams.
NFL clubs very rarely lose their restricted free agents because of the way the system is structured. But the Raiders may want to tender Holmes at a level higher than normal as he's shown flashes of difference-making ability at 6'4/210. Over the last two seasons (26 games), Holmes has recorded 72-1,124-5 with a pair of 100-yard outings.

Rotoworld:

The Raiders interviewed Colts OC Pep Hamilton for their head-coaching vacancy on Sunday night.
The interview took place mere hours after Indianapolis' Wild Card Round win over Cincinnati. Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie was present for this interview after allegedly not accompanying owner Mark Davis to interview Broncos DC Jack Del Rio. Interviewing Hamilton satisfied the Rooney Rule for the Raiders, so Oakland is free to hire a head coach immediately.

Rotoworld:

Owner Mark Davis interviewed Broncos DC Jack Del Rio for the Raiders' head-coaching vacancy over the weekend.
Perhaps most notably, current Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie is believed to have not accompanied Davis on the trip. It may be an indication that Davis willing to hand over football operations in addition to head-coaching duties if Oakland can land Del Rio. McKenzie has an 11-37 record in three years as Raiders GM.

Update: A source tells me that Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie "came away impressed" after his meeting with Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton Sunday evening. Sources say that McKenzie was not personally familiar with Hamilton prior to said meeting but had heard good things, and really wanted the opportunity to get to know Hamilton better first. The Raiders see the potential for Hamilton to develop their young quarterback Derek Carr, much as the Bills (who still await their own interview with him) see the potential for Hamilton to similarly mold E.J. Manuel, the source said.

That shocked the heck out of me.

Heck of a coach.

I'd love to see MS as coach, but only if Reggie Mac retains all personnel decision making. Not sure if Lat or the current OL would thrive in an exclusive ZBS environment. Might see some wholesale changes there if Shanny comes aboard. Hard to imagine him wearing silver and black again.

He used to be a heck of a coach...when his team cheated.

I am trying to understand the dynamics of these interviews. I read that Davis is interviewing head coaches. Is Reggie sitting in these meetings? It would seem that Reggie is safe if he is sitting in these meetings.

I'm getting old and my memory is fading...remind me about the Broncos cheating.

They both are interviewing Head Coaches. For instance Mark went to Denver to interview Jack Del Rio while at the same time McKenzie went to Indianapolis and interviewed Pep Hamilton. I think they are interviewing and then talking to each other how the interview went, etc... They will probably shorten down the list to their top 2 or 3 candidates and do a more in depth look at the candidates together.

If Reggie wasn't safe, he'd be gone by now.

And the only coach that had the juice to maybe ask for complete control is in Michigan.

PFT:

Raiders, Jets also talking to McCloughanPosted by Mike Florio on January 6, 2015, 7:33 PM EST
scot.jpg
Getty ImagesAt a time when multiple reports continue to indicate that it’s a done deal former 49ers G.M. Scot McCloughan will become the G.M. in Washington, PFT continues to hear that the deal isn’t done.

One of the reasons for the delayed consummation is that multiple other teams continue to pursue him. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the Raiders and Jets continue to have interest in McCloughan.

Moreover, the negotiations with Washington (which are ongoing) entail multiple issues. One of those issues likely has become whether McCloughan will have control over the roster and the draft. Currently, team president and G.M. Bruce Allen has those powers. If McCloughan gets those powers in D.C., it will amount to a de factodemotion for Allen.

As noted earlier in the day, Allen would emerge with enhanced job security, since he’d slide into a role that doesn’t carry with it accountability for the success or failure of the football team. If Allen keeps the power, he’ll likewise retain the responsibility, and McCloughan will simply be joining the team as Allen’s No. 2.

McCloughan most recently worked in the Seattle front office, assisting G.M. John Schneider with the stocking of one of the best rosters in football.
So, it's all narrowed down. Shurmer, Sparano, Bowles, Mangini, Shurmer, Hamilton, MCloughan for the front office, both Shanahans..............

:o

I don't think anyone has any idea how this is gonna shake out.

Charles Woodson in 2006. Deion Sanders in 1994 (and 1995). Reggie White in 1993. This is the territory that awaits the Detroit LionsNdamukong Suh – who is poised to become one of the most talented defensive free-agent signings in league history. And in the midst of his prime, no less.

Suitors? They will be plentiful, according to three league sources familiar with teams seeking defensive line tuneups this offseason.

The sources told Yahoo Sports there could be as many as 10 teams interested in making titanic pitches to Suh. That number includes Suh’s current team, the Lions, which still has the option of restructuring some contracts and retaining the four-time All-Pro via the franchise tag. At a price of $26.7 million for 2015, the weight of that one-year contract would be potentially crippling to the franchise, but the three sources said Detroit is keeping the option on the table. Head coach Jim Caldwell nearly admitted as much Monday, emphasizing that retaining Suh was a top priority for the franchise.

.
Among those in play, the sources said, if Suh hits the open market? The Jacksonville Jaguars,Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders – the three teams expected to have the most cash to spend in free agency. The New York Jets were also expected to show interest, although talent procurement plans now appear to be in limbo with the general manager and head coach spots both open. The Falcons were also named as a team that is expected to be interested, although that could also be in flux with the lack of a head coach and some lingering questions about whether owner Arthur Blank would insist to any hire that general manager Thomas Dimitroff stay in place.

Asked to outline the primary issues governing who will land Suh, the sources overlapped on three main factors:

1. Money

“There will be some level of interest from a bunch of guys until a [dollar] figure is exchanged [with Jimmy Sexton, Suh’s agent],” one source said. “The ballpark [of the deal] is obvious, but once it’s real, the [suitors] will get a lot smaller. It will go from five to maybe two. Who knows? Maybe just one. It all depends on the numbers.”

It’s believed Sexton will be seeking a deal to make Suh the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL by exceeding the six-year, $100-million deal signed by Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt. It’s also believed Sexton will seek a higher guaranteed amount than Watt received ($51.8 million). Those are staggering numbers for a defensive tackle, but Suh’s age (28) and ability to consistently create inside-the-line pocket pressure will likely make Sexton’s job easy when it comes to the financial push.

2. Behavior discussion

Owners always sign off on mega-deals, but Suh’s will be a little different than most. It will necessitate a deeper conversation than usual, including the very top of the franchise food chain. And with Suh’s less-than-stellar reputation among players across the league (he’s consistently named as one of the dirtiest in the game), it may reach into the locker room, as well.

Suh’s embarrassing incidents on the field (and a few less prominent ones off it) have been well documented. So there will be a primary question about character. In Jacksonville, where the front office is putting an emphasis on “good guys,” Suh’s price and oft-discussed dirty streak may undo his overwhelming positives, particularly with him remaining squarely in the NFL league office crosshairs.

And in a place like Cleveland, where the Josh Gordon line of credit is nearing bankruptcy (not to mention the issues with Johnny Manziel), another potential character (in the bad way) may be the opposite of what that locker room needs.

3. Motor discussion

Anyone who has covered the NFL distinctly recalls the behind-the-scenes conversations about Albert Haynesworth and Julius Peppers. Front offices were kicking around a lot of the “what will he do when he gets a league-shaping deal” variables. And Suh won’t be immune, despite the fact that he rarely (very rarely) seemed to coast during his time in Detroit.

The realities of Haynesworth (seven years and $100 million with the Redskins) and Peppers (six years and $91.5 million with the Bears) went immediately in opposite directions following those huge deals – with Haynesworth falling off a cliff in 2009 and Peppers regaining All-Pro form in 2010. Judging by Suh’s intensity on the field, signs point more toward a Peppers outcome. The tricky part is not expecting an immediate massive return in the mold of Watt, who is poised to win defensive player of the year after signing his massive deal during the preseason.

If Atlanta were to get involved and the push were to take place under Dimitroff, this would be a major point of discussion. The Falcons smartly stayed far away from Haynesworth because of the motor concerns. But they also passed on Peppers because of some of the same questions. Suh’s candidacy would likely come under the same scrutiny.

Welcome to the club. :bye:

On the other hand, at least he is smart enough to know what he doesn't know. What is really strange is he apparently didn't take advantage of learning about teh game from his father and others after all those years. What the hell was he doing during that time? Shopping barbers? :D

Would you get rid of McKenzie already! Not sure how it's possible but that dude has ripped an already bad Raiders organization apart. Why don't they just move on?

Dumb#### owner had the chance to dump Big Reggie for Scot McGloughlin and let him get away to the Redskins. ####!

I put up with a lot of #### these past dozen years. I will sign up for another ten or more of this clown car show, but if Mark hires that mother####er Shanarat, I'm out. I'll have an embolism or something. Stick around for the entertainment value. I'm ready to turn in my card, renounce the colors. Al must be twisting in his grave. Mark = bad son.

I don't have a problem with Shanahan. If he can help the Raiders become a winning franchise again then I'm all for it. I could care less about something that happened 30 years ago.

I think we will know by this weekend who the Raiders Head Coach will be.

Did Davis ever pay Shanahan the rest of that money he owed him, or did that go away in the courts at some point? Can't believe he's even interviewing for the position.

The Raiders are interviewing interim coach Tony Sparano on Wednesday as they close in on finishing their first round of interviews. Let’s take a look at the seven candidates who have been reported to have interviews.

DARRELL BEVELL, Seattle offensive coordinator

Why I can be sold: He is with a winning program. He’s worked with a lot of good quarterbacks. He’s bright. He has Green Bay history with Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie.

Why I’d be hesitant: Never been a head coach. Not sure if he up is for the task of being in control of everything.

JACK DEL RIO, Denver defensive coordinator

Why I can be sold: Strong defensive coach. He has been an NFL head coach, in Jacksonville. Players respond to him. He’s a Bay Area native.

Why I’d be hesitant: Some wonder if he is simply better as a defensive coordinator than a head coach.

PEP HAMILTON, Indianapolis offensive coordinator

Why I can be sold: Young, smart coach who work well with players. Has had success with quarterbacks.

Why I’d be hesitant: There has been criticism of his play calling. Some think he’s best suited for college.

ERIC MANGINI, San Francisco tight ends coach

Why I can be sold: Smart, hard worker who knows both sides of the ball. He has NFL head-coaching experience.

Why I’d be hesitant: He flamed out twice as a head coach. Some have complained about his style.

MIKE SHANAHAN, former three-time NFL coach

Why I can be sold: He has rings. He’s smart and he’d give the Raiders a presence in the head seat they haven’t had in a while. He would help Derek Carr, too.

Why I’d be hesitant: Some think the game has passed him by.

PAT SHURMUR, Philadelphia offensive coordinator

Why I can be sold: Smart, solid offensive history. Has history with McKenzie.

Why I’d be hesitant: Wouldn’t excite fans. Struggled badly as a head coach in Cleveland.

TONY SPARANO, Oakland interim coach

Why I can be sold: Players like him. He knows the team. Good head start.

Why I’d be hesitant: Went 3-9 as Oakland interim coach with lots of blowouts
.
