2015 ACC Basketball - CLOSED (use 2016 thread now) (1 Viewer)

Okay Okafor will beat Paige for POTY if he plays anything like he did tonight during the blue-white game. Holy crap he's good
All he needs to do is arrange for every team they play to start a 2nd string center and he's got POTY sewed up.
Guess you missed him dominate at the all-star games and while playing for the under 18 Olympic teams? And not sure there are a ton of 7' centers in college basketball that have the motor Marshall Plumlee does. Yeah, he stinks offensively, but defensively he's a big strong body who runs like his brothers. 2nd string or not, I'd say he's a pretty good gauge for Jah. But if you want to wait until he starts dominating the conference before you're a believer be my guest.
Wait until a player actually does something against real competition before anointing him POTY? No need to do that--after all, he is wearing a Duke jersey.
To be fair, his performance in the U-19 world championships last summer (2013) was against real competition. (The European teams were full of kids 2 years older than him, most of whom had been playing pro ball for 3 or 4 years) He posted a PER north of 40. And that was before he got himself into shape.

I'd be shocked if he isn't at least a 2nd team all American. IMO, first team is pretty likely. Some guys are just special. He's one of them. If he's making the 15 footers he was making the other night (A part of his game I hadn't seen before in roughly a dozen viewings) he comes completely unguardable at the college level.

This is going to be an absolute haul of a fishing trip
Well, we've gotten to the weekend and there's exhibition college ball this weekend, and real NBA games in a couple days, and real college games in just a couple weeks. So I suppose it's time to call off this expedition and make way for actual 2015 ACC Basketball discussion. Commish, I hope your expectations were met. Everyone else, I hope you were as amused and entertained as I was. Hopefully we will return to this subject in anger regularly this winter after the distinguished scholars of your alma mater's basketball team are defeated by the illiterate charlatans from Chapel Hill.
Oh, this isn't over...several of the usual suspects haven't even chimed in yet.

I meant I was done with last week's entertaining exchange. I'm sure there will be jokes and faux outrage for years to come.

Real outrage from you, though, if the NCAA dares to levy any real punishment.

Nah. I don't really care if they vacate wins or titles or anything. Obviously given the choice I'd prefer they didn't. but it's not important to me at all. I cheer for my teams because I enjoy the ride, and you can't make someone give back that enjoyment years after the fact by pretending it didn't happen.

If they handicap the basketball team going forward by taking away scholarships or postseason eligibility that's kind of annoying I guess, because I do enjoy March. But I'm not one of those entitled UNC fans who thinks the world is ending if we're not a Final Four caliber team. I think last season was the most fun and rewarding non-championship season in memory and that was with extremely limited personnel and not much in the way of postseason success. Plus let's be honest, the scandal has already handicapped the program going forward- it's tougher to recruit when there's uncertainty about your future.

Just a reminder in case folks don't know that the first two rounds (er....2 and 3) are in Charlotte this year so worth the drive for some of our triangle posters. Friday and Sunday games.

Any tips in getting those tix? I plan on traveling back there to catch some games.

It's not typically difficult. We get tickets like we do at the ACC tournament....when one team loses, the fans are usually looking to unload the rest of their seats if they bought the pack. I got tickets to the Michigan vs Duke game for $30 each right outside the stadium a couple years ago.

Yeah there are usually reasonable tickets on the market after selection Sunday (went to see duke in the first round in Philly 2 years ago)

Cool...it's super easy to get tix out here in Cali. Similar situations as you'd mentioned...just wondered if same for back there. Haven't been to a venue back that way since '90.

So what do you guys think about Roy's quote today

"I've never one day in my life did something that I shouldn't have done."

So pumped us Duke fans get to see back-to-back games to kick off the season Friday and Saturday! Enjoy Okafor and Winslow while you can Duke brothers, as both are lottery picks and playing in the league next year.

Looks like Duke's most explosive team in a LOOONG time, maybe back to the '99 season? And they appear to actually play defense like the program used to years ago. Gonna be a VERY fun year!

Ouch. Any chance Pitt had to be competitive takes a big hit with Durand Johnson being suspended for the season. His ACL last year was the point that turned their season in the wrong direction. When you don't have 5 or 6 McD's All-Americans on your roster it's tough to replace a double-digit scorer.

It appears that UNC's grand experiment of trying to be really good at playing basketball while being absolutely horrible at shooting a basketball will continue into Year 2. Good times.

In 2 games, Tar Heels not named Marcus Paige are shooting 10.5% on 3-pointers
Last night I don't think anyone other than Marcus Paige made a shot more than 10 feet from the basket until garbage time. Maybe one Brice Johnson jumper from the FT line early on. And yet they covered the spread by over 20 points.

Does Roy just not recruit guys that can hit 3s anymore? Seemed early in his tenure with UNC there was at least 1 or 2 guys who were 3pt specialists.

It's been a combination of bad luck and bad recruiting. Elite college rosters turn over so fast that it doesn't take much of those to doom you. Last year he assumed he'd have PJ Hairston and Leslie McDonald and all he had was an uninspired version of McDonald for half a season. PJ likely would have made them a top 5 caliber team. This year's freshman class might eventually help but I think only one of them (Justin Jackson) has a quality outside shot and they haven't really used him that way yet. He also might not be long for college ball, though.

Anyway, didn't mean to be negative after a great early season performance. They are outstanding in every other respect. They're oozing defensive talent. It's just bizarre watching a UNC team that can't shoot a lick.

No I agree. This is still a fun team to watch and could be a VERY good team this year. But I do find it interesting that there doesn't seem to be that great shooting threat for them. Maybe someone will evolve as the season goes along. Though, if Meeks and Johnson can do what they did last night, maybe the outside shot won't matter as much.

Yes... it was Jackson State. But NC State looked pretty decent.

I like Lacy, he's got a bit of 'old man game' to him. He's big and strong and has a nice outside shot. Defensively I thought the intensity was high, especially from the younger guys. Cody Martin looked pretty athletic and active for a frosh. It was interesting that him and Abu were the first two subs ahead of Anya and Lee.

Overall I think we'll struggle offensively against teams that can slow down Barber/Lacy, but I hope that an improved defense will keep us in games. Edit - it looks like we'll be a pretty deep team compared to the last few years, so I hope the improved defense comes with that.

Looking forward to another season. :banned:

Settling in to some decent hoops tonight after a predictably lackluster opening weekend. Winthrop hanging with Clemson, Miami down vs Florida. Also Villanova, a couple B1G games and a UMKC vs KSU.

I've dedicated an extra one of my TVs to college hoops tonight as CNN, aka the Cosby News Network, passed being irritating days ago.

Miami storms back and takes the lead!

Winthrop up a point on Clemson with 8 min left.

Miami beats Top 10 Florida in Gainesville.

Clemson loses at home to Winthrop.

Haven't gotten to see Miami yet...impressive win. Flash in the pan or glimpse of things to come?

How does this team stack up to their ACC Championship team of a couple years back?

I kinda thought they were a bit of a dark horse coming in. They've got 3 pretty darn good guards.

- Sheldon McClellan (15 PPG at Texas a sophomore 2 years ago)

- Angel Rodriguez (11 ppg at KSU 2 years ago)

- Manu Lecomte (solid freshman year last season and already some solid international experience with Belgium)

Their front court isn't that great (and certainly can't touch the group they had 2 years ago) but those guards will be able to score with anyone.

That team from 2 years ago was really unique. They were super old and really physically mature. They just beat people down with their size and strength. Pretty sure Kadji was pushing 25 and was older than Kevin Durant. (who was in his 6th NBA season at that point)

edit: also keep in mind that Florida wasn't full strength. Chris Walker was suspended and Dorian Finney Smith is hurt. Also, Rodriguez played out of his mind the 2nd half.

Looking forward to a couple awesome early season games tonight. I'm interested in watching the Duke freshman and then that *other* game after.

State won another game last night. Struggled a little bit in the second half, but still came out with the double digit win. I really like this team. I'm not sure how great State will be this year... I think they'll be 'good'... but this may end up being one of my favorite State teams to watch. I love the intensity so far. The team seems to be really unselfish and have great chemistry.

That's a big win for a potential NCAA tourney bid. No one will remember FL was without those 2 guys, and they don't play the toughest OCC schedule (besides for Illinois) or an in conference schedule for that matter as their lone ranked double up is Louisville. Heck, that may end up being one of the best OCC wins of the year. True road OCC wins against ranked teams are exceedingly rare these days.

Kennedy Meeks will be a force this season, I'm in love with him. I loved him last year and love the slimmed down but still large version of him this year.

If one person on their team learns to shoot (not named Marcus), they will be going very deep in the tourney.

Meeks clearly put in a lot of hard work losing that weight. He seems like a good kid too. I think he'll have a great year, except when he plays Oakfor, who will absolutely destroy him. But I don't fault Meeks for that, as Okafor looks like he should be playing in the NBA right now. The Cheats will have a good season, but I think the lack of 3 point shooting is what gets them around the Elite 8/Final Four.

i thought Duke looked fantastic. Those 3 freshman are the real deal. Perhaps best Duke team since at least 2004.

p.s. was excited about our chances for another title, but then watched the Kentucky game. yikes!

I don't think they're unbeatable (that's about as badly as Kansas can play), but if you let their overriding athleticism dictate the game, then yeah you'll be in trouble. However, they haven't shot the ball well nor have they been zoned. Some team will pack in a zone and dare them to beat them from the 3-point line and cause them all kinds of trouble on a bad shooting night.

As for Duke, I wasn't thrilled with the defense. Winslow overplays on the wing too much (or when he doesn't need to) which resulted in too many second chances. I do have a feeling they'll end up playing the 1 in 4 out (ie Jones in for Jefferson more) as the season goes on simply because Okafor needs the space. He still needs to develop his ability to get to his initial spot in the post against big, fundamentally sound defenders, but that's more an NBA problem than a college problem.

While the 3 freshman starters looked good, I agree Winslow didn't have his best game defensively, and K said Sheed was sick. I think Duke will be even better, especially defensively, when he is playing more minutes at the 2 spot instead of Cook. Cook played beautifully offensively, but is a real liability on defense. I also think we'll see a lot more of Allen in the coming weeks. He looks legit.

My favorite IC posters right now are those claiming the reporr exonerates Roy because it shows both that he knew nothing AND that he steered players away because he knew something wasn't right.

To be fair though, most posters over there are taking this for what it is - an embarrassing athletic and athletic scandal for a community that prided itself on doing things the right way
I agree with both of those. All I've done here is stick to the facts of the report as they pertain to the men's basketball team. Of course the report is embarrassing for the school and the athletic program and certain programs in particular, namely women's basketball and football. If I was a big fan or the women's basketball team or the football team, or was particularly concerned with UNC's undergraduate academic reputation, I'd find the report troubling and the activities described there unacceptable. But I'm not.

I asked for something concrete from the report that condemns the men's basketball team two days ago after citing to several different findings, passages and statements at the PC that exonerate them. Two days later and I'm still waiting for it.

Unfortunately ConstruxBoy is right- the NCAA isn't a court of law so they can levy punishments based on a whim or political pressure if they desire. But I think they'd be hard-pressed to do something to the basketball team based on this report without ending up in court like they did with Penn State, esp because I seriously doubt they're getting a consent decree that impacts the basketball team. Maybe I'm wrong, who knows. But based on the perceptions and expectations going in, that report is absolutely good news for the MBB program. No doubt about it.

And I absolutely try not to say negative things about posters. Posts, sure, that's part of the fun, but never posters. Any time I slip up feel free to call me out on it.
What is a "fake" class? This is directly from the Wainstein Report:Due to curricular changes and limits on the number of independent studies per student, crowder modified her approach in the late 1990s and started offering these paper classes under the guise of traditional lecture classes. Despite their lecture designation on the schedule, these classes continued to operate in the same fashion. There was no class attendance or student interaction with anyone other than Crowder, and Crowder continued to grade the papers.

between 1993 and 2011, crowder and nyangoro developed and ran a shadow curriculum within the afam department that provided students with academically flawed instruction through the offering of paper classes.

these were classes that involved no interaction with a faculty member, required no class attendance or course work other than a single paper, and resulted in consistently high grades that crowder awarded without reading the papers or otherwise evaluating their true quality.

That my friends, is why 3 banners should be taken down in the near future. Meanwhile the Cheats have now spent over 2 MILLION on PR firms lol
