2015 ACC Basketball - CLOSED (use 2016 thread now) (1 Viewer)

i earlier said this was best Duke team since 2004. I'll now go further and say since 2001.
First year I can remember where I wish college basketball didn't have a crazy 64 team single elimination playoff. We all want to see Kentucky-Duke and the odds of it happening are far too low.

I keep thinking UNC is going to find a way to let OSU back into this game but OSU can't buy a rebound.

Lot of time for UNC to hold them off at the line...

Good Lord UNC's schedule looks like a cheat grinder ahead.
Fixed that for ya. ;)

I still say they are one good shooter and one good coach away from being a dangerous team, although that was a good quality win for them yesterday.

Ahead, behind ... it's the most brutal schedule I've ever seen in college basketball. Or at least I don't remember anything like it. It's not even Xmas and they've played the Ken Pom #1, 14, 16, 38, 42, 49 and 66. And the craziest part- only one of them at home. And they've got 5 more left against the top 5 before reaching the postseason.

They should be good enough to notch 20+ wins, but out of morbid curiosity I'm kind of curious how low they could go and still make the tournament. 18-14, probably. Maybe 17-15.

The conference schedule does them no favors having to play L'ville and Duke twice. They did manage to make it through the tough part of the OOC schedule relatively well. Losing at home to Iowa is tough, but the other 2 losses don't look bad (neutral to Butler and @Kentucky). Open with Clemson to start ACC play then get ND and L'ville back to back games. Really though schedule that if they play well, will have them battle tested come tourney team. But I agree, this is a team that can probably have 12 losses or so and get in as long as they are the right 12 losses.

20-12 would be a no-brainer regardless of the losses. It gets more interesting below that number.

Shouldn't be an issue, though. The freshman are getting a little more comfortable, and the core of the team has already shown that they can win a decent number of games without taking threes. The weak bottom half of the ACC should get them over 20 no problem.

This team reminds me alot of last year's. They seem to play to the level of their opponent. Same thing happened to start last season, beat the good teams, lost to crappy teams. Then conference play rolled around and they went on a nice winning streak to get things right. Could see something similar again this season. As the younger guys get more comfortable in their roles and Roy gets a rotation going, this team will improve.

Yeah. They'll won 20 for sure.

They're not a top 5 team (that pre season ranking was silly) but they're talented enough to make the tournament pretty easily

Eh, it was a little excessive but hardly a travesty. They're a wing shooter away from being on the second tier behind Kentucky/Duke. There was no way to predict that no freshman wing or improved upperclassmen would fill the role, leaving them probably towards the other end of the top 25 for most of the season. You don't expect a program like UNC to spend two straight seasons towards the bottom of the entire 350 team Division 1 in long range shooting, but here we are.

Tough loss for the Heels last night. Notre Dame looks pretty good this year. Another tough one this weekend for UNC against Louisville.

The yahoo sports ap on my phone listed UNC as 8.5 point favorites last night. I thought that was complete insanity against the most efficient offensive team in the country. (I think they may be down to # 2 after last night)

I don't bet on sports, but I was pretty tempted last night. UNC never guards the 3 well.

Captain Hindsight!

Seriously though- KenPom projections had it around the same margin, and before last night UNC was literally the best 3 Pt defense in Division 1 according to his numbers. Even after last night's barrage they're still 4th at 26.1%.

Well it wasn't really hindsight because I told my brother about it yesterday at lunch (not that you care, nor should you)

Unc was really the best 3 point defense in the nation? That's crazy. I just know it's something that roys teams have traditionally struggled with.

Yup, first in the country before yesterday, and still fourth. Here's their up to date Pomeroy profile:

[EDIT- formatting sucked, sorry]

UNC fans have always complained loudly that they don't defend the three very well, but under Williams they've generally been solid or better, at least from a percentage basis. Part of it might be the number of looks they give up from beyond the arc, though, rather than the shooting %. And I'm sure part if it is perception/whining from the UNC perspective- made threes against your team hurt a lot more when you don't make very many of your own.

So ND has become my hoped for #4 seed for Kentucky now. Maybe they get hot for the whole game and shoot them out of the gym. Well one can hope, though KY may get every rebound.

UNC is UNC. At least for them Pinson gave them something.

Toughest stretch of State's season begins tomorrow: @UVA, Duke, UNC in 8 days. Hoping for at least one win but not holding my breath.

State has a young team this year, but they are capable of beating teams they probably shouldn't beat, and will probably lose some to those they shouldn't lose to. I'm hoping they win, lose, and then win their next 3 games ;)

all this time, i though someone else was Karl Hess (ie, seeing photos of him in the articles today, and that's not the guy i thought Hess was). No idea what the name of the ref is that i'm picturing.

Probably Jamie Luckie. Another one who deserves to go...

Congrats Wolfpack...gritty performance.

Gott deserved the signature win...just wished it wasn't on Duke.

I didn't like the hole Duke dug...but did like the effort they put in to cut it back to 7 points...but they ran out of steam and State responded with another push.

Our conference is on an upswing for use...lot of tough teams/games.

Congrats Pack fans. BEAUTIFUL basketball you guys played today. I think Lacy and Turner were channeling Rodney Monroe today.

Great win pack

I was equally impressed with Okafor. That kid is probably the most impressive 18 year old since Lebron IMO.
I agree. he's so good its absurd. but State also had a great game plan for him today I thought. It was a good experience for him to go through. He looked very capable of dribbling out the double teams too. Kid can shoot, pass, dribble, rebound, block shots, he literally can do it all.

State's RPI was #45 before today's game. (And they had played the 9th toughest schedule in the country before today's game.)

Looking pretty good for getting into the dance.

Great confidence boost for the team. I'd love to see a repeat performance on Wednesday night. :wolf:
I'd love to see it too! The Virginia game ended in disappointment, but they didn't let that happen today. I got really nervous when the 17 point lead got shaved to 7, but the Pack recharged and closed it out. It was great day at the wolves den!! :wolf:

Long way to go. A win against UNC on Wednesday will go a long way towards showing this wasn't just a fluke.

Lacy is just about as clutch as they come, but his performance yesterday shooting the ball was just ridiculous. Can't count on that every night.

I was REALLY happy to see the bigs put in some good work yesterday. They ALL played great and lightened the scoring load off the guards a bit.

Cat needs to get going and I'd like to see our FT% creep up, but otherwise not much to complain about from yesterday. Just keep it going.

Duke is going down again. They've just totally lost whatever mojo they had going back before exams. They look awful on defense and okafor is missing bunnies.

Credit to Wake for a great effort tonight. Nice win for SU and of course nice to stay undefeated in conference.

Of all the things I've mentioned that I don't like about being in the ACC, having Tim Brandt on the call tonight tops the list. He's been my least favorite football announcer on ABC since around 2000 and age/experience isn't helping.

"Terry" Cooney? "Raheem" Christmas? Oy, Tim...

Duke is broke. Maybe freshman wall? Better now than at the end of the season, hopefully there is time to fix this...but who knows. I didn't mind the State loss at all, they were just amazing that night, but this loss, at home, basically quitting in the 2nd half...it was a kick in the nuts.
