Nah, just keep drafting the best guys please. Fill holes and needs in FA where you know what you're getting, but get the talent in the draft. Not that Carr and Mack weren't huge needs, but those picks happened because we let the draft come to us and we took the best player on the board. Edwards, Jackson, guys like that that are just talent fits rather than needs. You pick for need you end up taking DJ Hayden with Sheldon Richardson still on the board.

Broncos are in pretty good shape on the cap, they free 19 mill by cutting Peyton, so they can re-sign Miller easily.
Some free agents I think make sense are guys that might get cut because the team doesn't have the cap, not necessarily because they don't want the player. You hear a lot that teams don't ever really let the guys they like get to free agency. That's why there are so many big free agent busts.
But when a team has made some salary cap mistakes, and need to cut good players for cap space, that's when I think you can get a good free agent.
Looking at http://overthecap.com/salary-cap-space, you can look at which teams are up against it on teh cap next year, and easily see who might get chopped.
Miami: Just a horrible Suh contract. They might cut Brent Grimes, Jordan Cameron, Reshad Jones
Buffalo: They will probably HAVE to cut Mario Willaims and Kyle Williams. You could make an argument for both in OAK.
New Orleans: They are screwed. They might have to trade Brees.
Patriots: Jerod Mayo is a goner.
Steelers: I dunno, maybe Timmons. They picked up DeCastro's option, will work a long term deal.
Redskins: Even after they cut RG3, they might cut Goldson, Garcon, and even DeSean.

Mass are you saying you think the Broncos will franchise tag Miller? My thinking is if he is a free agent Oakland could offer more cash than Denver.

I think if the Broncos really want Miller, even if he would like to leave, he'll re-sign in Denver.
Every agent out there knows that you get as much guaranteed money as you can, and if the Broncos franchise him (which I believe they will if they can't get a deal done by March), he only gets 14-16 ill guaranteed. Only the one year salary is guaranteed.
The biggest chunk of guaranteed money Miller will make in his career is sitting there, 30-40 mill at least. It's a huge sum, and that's why most franchise guys re-sign. You have to really hate the team in order to leave 20-30 million dollars on the table, just for a chance to play somewhere else. And EVERYONE around this guy will be telling him to take the money.

All summer long, fans speculate on the Broncos trading him, or him playing out the year, or him refusing to report. Then, in August he signs a long term deal after missing the worst part of training camp.

Osweiler is also a UFA though, and there's only one tag. They absolutely cannot get to March 1 without one of them signed. This will be a huge game of three way chicken. Osweiler and Miller both know until one signs, they both hold the cards. That means Denver is going to have to overpay one of them to sign them before FA starts. My guess is it will be Osweiler, because his overpay will be less drastic and shorter-term. He'd probably do 2 years $25M while they sort out his true long-term value. But if he holds strong it could get interesting. No way Miller signs cheap. He'd love to hit the market and take offers.
If they both hit FA, you have to tag Owseiler. Unproven or not, cheaper or not, inconsistent as he's been, you can't lose a QB.

I'm trotting them out for the 2nd time this season. Woodson's last home game against a division rival. I'm hoping they're pretty hyped but also just fun to have my Raiders play in the finals for me.

That was a disgusting game. Carr was under heavy pressure and the offense really struggled without Cooper being able to be a factor. Outside of the safety the D did not get much pressure on Rivers. However, the team got a win which is a sign they are definitely starting to get there. Bad teams find ways to lose games, good teams find ways to win games.

D played just well enough. O was anemic and predictable. I really don't get some of the play calls. Wtf was up with guys going in motion 8 yards behind the line of scrimmage and just standing there by the side line? Awful way to set up a check down

Strange how the O seems to have decent talent but became less effective as the season went on. Not sure what that means.

Some of the issues with the offense are execution (over thrown passes, dropped passes) and some of it is play calling. I didn't watch much of the game Thursday, but I haven't seen many screens lately, and no quick tempo offense unless necessary.

They tried to run a screen or two but Carr's passes got knocked down. He was under too much pressure. Been seeing a lot of batted passes the past few weeks, the OLINE needs to get the defenders on the ground quicker.

That game was actually a great example of what the Raiders did in the past; meaning how San Diego had every opportunity to win but continued to let the opponent back into the game. Oakland has become a team that is taking advantage of those miscues instead of offering them up.

I am concerned Mario's neck injury is worse than anyone is aware of yet. Anytime you are talking about a neck injury and trying to evaluate if or when surgery is needed, you are talking about something that could be career threatening.

If I had to bet, I would best against it. With Mack, Autry, Edwards, Mayowa, and the possibility of a draft pick or free agent, and Aldon Smith, hard to see them re-signing him at 33 years old.Garrett said:

did no one else see those plays where a player would go in motion, super deep in the back field and just stop at the sideline once the play started?
Then the screen pass would go to that receiver, he'd run a couple yards to the line of scrimmage and get swarmed by the defense? Yep, saw those. Couldn't figure out why they kept running them instead of doing anything down field.

It seemed pointless to me, I wonder if it wasn't done to see how defenses reacted, and go from there, but don't think I saw any payoff. Could also be a set up for a double pass, I was thinking.

Reece suspended 4 games. PEDs.
Problem is they kept "seeing how the defense reacted" and never reacted to the reaction. I kept waiting for them to run something off of it, but they never did.

Thinking about Marcel getting suspended, and Del Rio backing him up, it occurred to me there's several players that are in the same boat, where I have no idea if they'll be back.
Reece: I don't like having two fullbacks, Olawale is clearly trusted, and is cheaper. Olawale is a RFA, he's back for one more year. if they re-sign him long term, the 31-year-old Reece might be out the door.
Nate Allen: We never really got to see him. Has a McKenzie contract, so they can cut with no penalty, but his salary is not a problem either. Remains to be seen what the team thinks about him. And with the way the safety position is, we could sign one and draft one, and still have room for him. If I had to guess, I think he stays. Centerfield types are harder to come by as well, I feel like in-the-box guys are easier to find.
Streater and Holmes: The Rod Streater mystery may never be solved. I think the team could move on from both, or re-sign one if free agency and the draft doesn't provide new bodies. Forced to guess, I think they both walk. I think both may need to wait till the 2nd wave of free agency, or even after the draft to get a deal.
Curtis Lofton: Can be cut at any time before opening day with no cap hit. With Heeney as the only other MLB on the roster, Curtis probably needs to hope that the team doesn't make a move for a Wilhoite or a Trevathan, or someone like that. Heeney looks good flying around, protected by Dan and Jelly, not so good when forced to take on blockers. I'm not excited if Lofton is on the team next year, but I ain't mad about it, either.
Roy Helu: This is an even bigger mystery than Streater. I have to assume there's some locker room stuff we don't know about. I assume he's gone, but heck, we have no idea why he was never used.

Nate Allen - contract may not be an issue, but at $5M it's not a bargain either. I guess I trust the talent evaluation to see if we take another look.
Streater and Holmes - pass. I'm over both, especially Streater who I thought may sneak some performance in. Solid corp 1-3 so for fliers I'd rather have a Brice Butler type. Find a couple fresh faces in the late draft/UDFA.
Lofton - same as Allen. Since it's not a dire cap situation you probably keep him unless addressed early-ish in the draft or another home run ala Malcolm Smith. There are a TON of LB candidates, I wouldn't mind a slight overpay to grab the right one:

I'd like to see an infusion at RB in the draft. Elliott would be a dream, but there are a couple of mid-round guys that intrigue as well.
It's still all about the secondary. Generally the pass rush drives the CB play, but in our case we can't hold coverage to an NFL baseline to allow the pass-rush to get home. If we get solid CB play the pass rush could really take off. Sign 2 CB and 2 S (Weddle fits) and don't be afraid to draft them either.

Oline is the one BIG area that is missing from your wish list. Penn is an FA and they need to either resign him or find an equal talent. LT is a key position, and continuing to protect Carr will help his development. I think Penn has done a really good job in the two years he has been here, and I find it a little strange they haven't resigned him yet. I look for the Raiders to draft a tackle early in the draft regardless of Penn's status.massraider said:

Generally, when a play like that is called the staff is expecting some sort of blitz, so they want to get the ball to the perimeter where it is expected there would be less defenders and one broken tackle is an explosive play.

I don't see MLB as a pressing need. Seems like more of a luxury. With Mack, A.Smith, Edwards (hopefully), Jelly and Dan Williams they have enough up front to protect their LBs and allow them to make plays.
Safety, CB and OT seem like the most important needs. Doubling up on either a top CB or OL in the first round followed by a top safety in the second seems like the most prudent course of action...five months in advance of the draft.
You'd think an organization run by a former linebacker and coached by former linebackers would be able to find a tackling machine in the mid to late rounds. The defense and special teams can use a few more Heeneys.

Given the unknowns surrounding the status of Edwards and A. Smith, I have to believe the DE / OLB has become a priority for the Raiders. Rumors have the Bills cutting Mario Williams. He would be an exciting addition assuming they don't have to mortgage their future.

He's all done getting big time money deals tho. Whatever Mario gets for his next deal, it's going to be short term, with all the money in the first year. Raiders can afford about 6 of those deals, if they so choose.
I don't like any player that quits on his team, but there are players that have played well after mailing it in for other teams, several of them having quit on the Raiders.

If you look around at the draft boards now, lots of CBs and OTs in the 1st round. That's pretty good.
