2015 Shark Pool mock draft - The SECOND one (1 Viewer)

Since he was just selected we may have to wait till tomorrow to get this thing going unless we want to veto the Carter pick to Zona and make a different selection and then we can keep going because I'm ready with Detroit's pick if we can break the logjam.
make it so.

Carolina can be ready quick or in 3 hours.

In the 3rd round with the 88th pick.

Detroit Lions select:

RB Duke Johnson, Miami

Carolina (FUBAR) up next.

=============

EDIT for pick explanation: Value selection more than anything since I like Joique Bell but Lions lost Reggie Bush and his receptions from RB position. Highest rated player left on my board and he can slide into Reggie Bush's role as a pass catching receiver out of the backfield.

Duke Johnson Miami-Fl 3Jr RB 5'9" 207

Besides Johnson’s injury riddled history and his slight frame he has the explosive athleticism to make an impact in the NFL. Johnson looks like a mixture between Chris Johnson and LeSean McCoy with his elite receiving skills that allow him to be a weapon in both the passing and rushing game. Johnson has skills that allow him to potentially be productive in any system, but in a spread offense he has the potential to be elite while also remaining healthy.

To get caught up again.

I think this is right but make sure to point out any mistakes so I can correct.

Frankly, I'm not entirely sure which Sooner OT I like better (and there are others worth considering), but

Carolina Panthers select

Daryl Williams, OT Oklahoma

Rams pick #90 (CB run!)

3.26 Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB Oregon

If the Rams have some "hidden" needs on defense, they might be CB and DE (also LB, already discussed above in the second round, for different reasons). Not in 2015, but as soon as next year, for contract reasons. Starter Janoris Jenkins and CB2/3 Trumaine Johnson are in contract campaigns - Chris Long will make $12 million in 2015, but hasn't really played at that level for a few years (like Bradford, he was a pre-current labor agreement bonus baby, in his case picked at 1.2 overall - primary reserve/rotational DEs Williams Hayes and Eugene Sims, like the CBs, are also in contract years).

The three most prominent rehabbing torn ACLs in this draft probably belong to Gurley (in a class by himself, arguably the #1 prospect overall based purely on talent, may STILL go top 10, amazing given 2015 could be a red shirt season, and the positional devaluation trend in recent years), as well as Texas A&M OT Ogbugei and Oregon CB "IEO". Their final draft slot is expected to be far more impacted by injury, and they could drop to the second, third, even further? But both, if healthy, might have had a shot at being drafted in the top 10-20 region (the OT played better on the right side in 2013 and before, when he was compared favorably to 2014 top 10 overall OT Jake Matthews, than on the left side in 2014 before the injury). IEO could be one of the best coverage and tackling combo prospects at his position in the draft* (easily top 3 if healthy). After trading down and still landing a starter caliber OL in the second round, the extra third rounder seems like a "bonus" pick. If he needs to be shelved for a year, that aligns just fine with the fact that the Rams do have at least three solid CBs in Jenkins, Johnson and '14 rookie revelation Gaines THIS season. I think next year they will likely retain one (but not both) of the CBs from the class of '12, in which case IEO could play nickel, but he may have the talent to eventually start. While undersized (5'9" obviously sub-optimal for an elite CB prospect), he is pretty much a Jenkins-doppleganger in terms of physical stature, but a more rugged, physical and reliable open field tackler. The Rams have ridiculous pedigree in the front seven, with five (TOP HALF OF THE) first round DL, and a late first and two high seconds at LB. Less so in the secondary, except with top 10 overall big nickel safety Mark Barron and high second Jenkins. CB Johnson and starting safety McDonald are third rounders, Gaines a sixth and fellow starting safety McLeod was a UFA.

Knee injuries are no longer a death blow to careers like circa Brian's Song (especially if not catastrophic, like Lattimore). I don't think I could find many more talented prospects at any position if his knee prognosis is favorable, at this point near the middle of the draft, where intra/inter-positional value really begins to flatten out and get increasingly squashed (and the Rams have CB covered in 2015, but it could represent a "need" position as soon as next year). In the first mock, my predecessor took him in the second round (and credit the suggestion in this context). I think you can make a case for that value-wise. But I like him better as the fourth prospect through three rounds in this mock (and that is why he becomes the first player drafted here, from the defensive side of the ball - due to the hard to overlook, recently expected first round pedigree and potential upside if healthy, and a return to some approximation of that form).

* Bob Sturm notes he had 200+ tackles in three seasons and invokes the hallowed Antoine Winfield as a comp, one of the greatest pound-for-pound tacklers I've ever seen at any level.

This guy is an absolute steal. He was a late 1st/early 2nd last year when people thought he might go into the draft, he had another good year, and in some mocks I've seen him fall all the way into the 4th round due to injury!? Some people even think he might be able to transition to S despite his size.

Denver selects

Xavier Cooper, DT, Washington St

Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme calls for smaller, more attacking types which is what Cooper is.

#93 Indianapolis selects Ty Sambrailo OT Colorado St.

#29- Jordan Phillips

#61- PJ Williams

Trying to shore up the line.

I would have preferred getting Grayson instead of Hundley, but still, as a Rams fan...

..... I just wanna give Bob a hug for this draft.
:hifive:

Thanks, Junior, Gruden was raving about Grayson's intangibles, he seems to be really great between the ears, you may well be right? Some scouts question his arm so that could ultimately limit his upside in an important way (I realize Brady doesn't have a cannon, but imo his arm got stronger and is significantly more so than here).

Hundley has more obvious flaws in other areas (takes too long to see things and make decisions, holds the ball too long, throws short a lot, hasn't developed as expected given his elite, five star prep recruiting grade pedigree). But he seems mature, professional, disciplined, serious about the game, with a desire to be great, strong work ethic AND coachable, and has some physical tools and athleticism that can't be taught. If NFL coaching and reps can elevate his QB skills, I think he has much higher upside.

Unless Grayson could develop into an above average starter (and his physical tools may preclude him from that, otherwise maybe he would be a higher graded prospect than where he appears to be now), not a lot of value in rostering a player that can't get you over the hump. Even if Hundley is further away in some of the intangible and processing speed, decisiveness, pocket presence-type attributes, if he gets there, and his superior physical tools and athleticsm give him greater upside, if he fulfills his potential and that greater talent enables and positions him to be a difference maker, than that could be a player more worth rostering. I guess I'd rather have a 40% shot at a very good player, than a 50-60% shot at an average player. But maybe Grayson emerges as a star and I end up being way off? :)

We were doing so well. I'll be up a while but if Greenbay and Seattle pick early tomorrow I'll be available around noon-1pm cst.

#93 Indianapolis selects Ty Sambrailo OT Colorado St.

#29- Jordan Phillips

#61- PJ Williams

Trying to shore up the line.
According to Bracie's Top 200 Board he shared:

Phillips is 38th on the concensus list

PJ Williams is 46th and

Sambrailo is 80th

So, not too far off I guess.

Man did CC screw up taking a RB with the Packers' 2nd, IMO.
Agreed. I also think Cleveland screwed up by taking RB when they did.
I think I snared the SOD in terms of comparative draft value taking Duke Johnson who had a 55 consensus ranking, 33 spots lower than where I took him and the next highest ranked RB is Rob Johnson who has a consensus draft ranking of 84 so that was a big drop off.

I did have OT Daryl Williams as the next highest ranked player on my board but he was much lower for me and in the consensus rankings he is at 94.

Also I had no idea that this list existed till this morning but it confirmed my decision to go with RB Duke Johnson.

I know. BTW I like your entire draft for Indy. Solid.

I was referring to value of RBs and where they've been drafted. RB Duke Johnson is about the only true value in this mock draft at RB according to the consensus mock list.

Yeah, Duke was on my radar for sure. There are 2 RBs left that I think could challenge for SOD. Who knows though.

Yeah, some RBs are gonna go in the 6th that are interesting. Man, this is a deep class.

Know what else is deep, that no one is talking about? Defensive tackle.

It is but their are many different types of DTs.

The consensus rankings shows their work and how they label positions. They don't use DT but instead use IDL.

For IDL they include:

- 5 technique 3-4 defensive end type of prospects

- 3 technique 4-3 rush tackles

- Nose tackles or 0 tech 3-4 and 4-3 prospects

That is a big group of players so it really depends on what sort of player you're looking for in the draft.

I didn't think I could find a guy like Danny Shelton late in the first round and Cleveland was offering the #12 pick so I pulled the trigger. Shelton has a consensus ranking of 14 and I got him at 12 but the Saints with the 13 pick said they were going to take him so he wouldn't have lasted.

The IDL or DT class is deep but it really depends on what you're looking for. One DT may not be the best fit especially this late but their are always some gems that slip through the cracks that may not have high rankings.

I'm not saying Ameer isn't good. I'm saying that the middle of their defense is what killed them in the playoffs last year and now they're behind the eight ball trying to shore that up at this point.

Heeney was one of the guys I would consider at this spot. Kwon Alexander would have been the guy if I'd made the pick.

3.95 - Seattle - Tony Lippett, WR/CB - Michigan St

With the injuries and defections they've had at the corner and receiver spots, Lippett could at least be a good fill in at either spot early on and could develop into a full time starter at either position.

25 SS Landon Collins - 17 / 1 / 1

57 RB Tevin Coleman - 53 / 4 / 4

89 OT Daryl Williams - 94 / 11 / 17

Not bad, if these rankings matter.

Agreed. I also think Cleveland screwed up by taking RB when they did.
IMO, all the RBs have gone earlier than they should. Including Coleman but I wanted to pick him.
Yeah, I am a bit surprised how high most of the backs have gone. Not surprised by this pick for the Panthers though. Carolina's offense needs speed in the worst way and cannot rely on JStew to stay healthy.

NE selects:

3.32 Arie Kouandjio, OG, Alabama
3.33 Josh Shaw, CB SoCal

Arie boasts the protypical guard frame, 6'5"+ 300lbs+, played well for some very good Bama teams but has some glaring question marks in durability. Had surgery on both of his knees in 2011, rehabbed in 2012 and his survived major injury since then. Strong and quick, slow in space - Look for the Pats to take a complimentary guard later.

Shaw is that special kind of idiot. Off field shenanigans aside, amazingly talented physically, 6'1" 200lbs, 4.4 forty, 10'10" broad, 39" vert, 26 reps. Played very well at Corner and Safety in 2013, 67 tackles (5.5 for a loss), 4 INTs and 7 PDs. Hes got the frame, the measurables and the questionable background to allow him to fall this far. Pats will definitely take a shot here to look for potential difference makers at the position.

2.14 Michael Bennett, DL
2.32 Mario Edwards Jr., DL
3.15 Danielle Hunter, Edge
3.32 Arie Kouandjio, OG
3.33 Josh Shaw, CB

Agree. Additionally, the Packers should be able to find a backup/change of pace RB in the 3rd round or later. So why spend an early pick on a RB when we have desperate needs on defense, and players available who are likely graded similarly as Ameer?

Solid, was thinking about Shaw for Raiders 4th rounder.

Also: Holy defense, Batman.

I don't like Kwon for GB (and sort of in general). He's a 4-3 wlb ONLY and built like a safety. In Marinelli's defense, maybe. Fighting the beasties in a 3-4? No way. I did considered OLB and a couple 3-4 DE types pretty hard, but I wanted to address the ILB problem so I wouldn't be criticized anymore.

I do like Heeney though. Gary Davenport, IDP guru guy, just posted an article calling him this year's Borland. Um... no, but he will stick around and he will contribute. If nothing else he'll be aces on specials. And guys, at the end of the third round of the NFL draft, sometimes that's what you have to consider. Best case he frees Matthews up from ilb duties.

Andy did nab the last of the guys I hoped would fall in Xavier. So close. If I wasn't being a little of an appeaser with an ILB here, iow, if I was seriously drafting in this situation, I would have gone OLB, I think. Two reasons. BaP and I think there's some very similar ILB talent out there.

It's probably been six or seven years since I made my argument here for value before needs and I'm not going to put much effort into the explanation again, but I still lean strongly towards BaP early in a draft.

I guess it comes down to grading. I have Heeney graded similarly to any ILB not named Kendricks. Even Kendricks is overrated and I am a UCLA alum who's seen every down of every game. I'm not googoo eyed for the run stoppers in this draft. Tough deal for teams in GBs situation, but that doesn't mean they should load up on these JaGs and pass on legit nfl players.

I do have Ameer, as I already said, graded the same as Waldman, a full tier above anyone not name Gurley. I think this draft has two exceptional RBs and I made one a Packer.

In Walterfootball's latest mock the Pack got Duck Johnson with that same pick!?

So to sum up my destruction of poor Green Bay, something I would actually enjoy doing, I can agree a mistake was probably the first round CB. Losing Davon House and Tramon Williams had me focused there. I'm still eyeballing corners for this roster, and maybe the existing Packers there are better than Bradford and Barrington in the middle, or maybe that was the spot for a stout DL of similar value. Like I said, if I did this in real life, I'd die young.

3.95 - Seattle - Tony Lippett, WR/CB - Michigan St

With the injuries and defections they've had at the corner and receiver spots, Lippett could at least be a good fill in at either spot early on and could develop into a full time starter at either position.
This kid made me some serious money at Draft Kings this past season. He was cheap for awhile.

3.99 - The Bengals select TE - Jeff Heuerman - Ohio State

*Whew* - This is where the philosophy of BPA/letting the board come to you pays off a bit.

When I went to lunch before making pick 85 yesterday during my brief first glance I 100% thought I was selecting Heuerman there. But then I saw that Coates was still on the board and couldn't be passed up. Gambled that there was a better chance Heuerman would drop than Coates and won :)

Just the blocking TE that Hue will be looking for in this draft and take Gresham's place opposite Eifert. Gresh gradually showed himself to be a moody malcontent prone to penalties and while he became a good blocker somewhere along the line he stopped breaking tackles as well - the fact that he's hurt now and the sheer lack of interest from most of the NFL shows where Gresham's at. Anyway back to Heuerman - didn't catch the ball a lot in college but the Bengals have enough weapons that that is not a major concern to start out with - he can grow into a chain-moving role down the line. The main thing is that he should help make big holes for Hill and Bernard. Ryan Hewitt did a nice job as emergency TE2 late last year but he's better suited to generally playing the full back role. This is a guy I can legitimately see my Bengals picking - if they don't get him it might be something like the Rutgers kid in round 5.
