2016 Green Bay Packers thread (1 Viewer)

I remember Favre as a doper and a womanizer who disgraced himself and his wife. I remember him as reckless with the ball, ending more than one Packer playoff run. I remember him sniveling, lying and whining his way to Minnesota where he went solely to stick it to the Packers and then wishing the Bears good luck to beat the Packers when he could not get it done himself. I also remember him starting his whining about the support he was getting from the club back as far as at least 2003 and starting his yearly retirement rumors. He did that in an attempt to general manage the team and to blackmail them into drafting who he wanted. News flash Brett, the team had a damn fine GM. They did not need the input of Favre in their drafting. Favre's actions were disruptive, destructive, and counterproductive.

Eventually Favre's constant antics caused his own demise. Had he not been constantly threatening retirement the Packers may not have felt forced to draft Aaron Rodgers, but once they did the writing was on the wall.

I hate that he could not be satisfied with the way things were and that he wanted things even more his way. His makeup in the end lead to several lost opportunities.

All that said, and I have bitterness towards the man, I also remember exuberance. I remember daring-do. I remember a rocket arm, toughness, and a willingness to sacrifice his body for the team. I also remember playoffs and a Super Bowl after what seemed like a longer time in the desert than the Israelites leaving Pharaoh. I am happy to see him honored for the joy he brought and the good times and accomplishments. He deserved honoring as was done, and were I in charge I would have seen that this was done. That said, I don't forget that the hero was also a jerk. Both are true and those who seek to rewrite history will not change my opinion.

Throughout the entire Favre saga my respect for Bart Starr grew. he has always handled himself with class, and has been and was supportive of Favre and the organization while Favre was forging his legacy. I feel the same about Aaron Rodgers who dealt with the Favre created turmoil with class, and who has been all about healing any rifts between Favre and the fans, Favre and the club, and Favre and Rodgers.

Favre has been great. I place him below Bart Starr great, but great. By the time Aaron retires I expect the Packer Q.B. pantheon during my life to be Starr, Rodgers, Favre, and Lynn Dickey, that's right, Lynn Freakin Dickey.

Aside- My Favorite Favre stat is not a stat at all, but was often a fact. From the midpoint of his career he often had more wins at Soldier field than the Bears Q.B. he was facing on a given day.

Yeah he showed his ### quite a bit at the end. Too bad too.

But I had a lot of fun watching him with my family and friends during his career. His net effect on my life was a plus. So I can forgive the antics. Seemed like he kind of lost his #### when his old man passed away. Nobody could really keep him in line at that point.

I was at his first game as a Packers, this his first start the following week. Fun times. I was 19 I think. Now I'm 41. Not as fun as being 19.

UFA TE Jermaine Gresham to visit Green Bay.

Aside from the injuries, drops, fumbles, and conflicts with teammates I guess he's okay.

It seems more likely that a truly desperate team will overlook those flaws and sign him as the first-round pedigree and size sucker them into thinking he can finally meet that potential.

He could also benefit from playing with a real QB

Letroy Guion gets three game suspension. Could be worse, I suppose, he could have been gone a "purple drank" suspension. He was guilty of felony bad judgment, and no excuses on that. I just hope in his appeal he is incredibly contrite and we can get him back before we desperately need him.

Here's to hoping B.J. returns with even greater fire than he appeared to have last camp, and that he has a contract year. Come on B.J., hold the fort and then some until Letroy gets back.

Oh, and Letroy, everything you do this year, and particularly while out on suspension will effect the rest of your life. use your suspension time wisely, please.

Finally got to watch the Favre HOF thing after being on the road for a bit.

Very cool to see all those faces and hear Brett and others tell great stories.

And seeing Starr talk even just a little is awesome. Really hope he makes it up for the Thanksgiving game. Seeing those 3 qbs on the field will be incredible.

Now camp starts and watching twitter this morning, I will never tire watching the team riding bikes to practice.

If its not the coolest tradition out there...its pretty close.

I wonder about the flip side of this, too: how many former Packers are on other rosters. Off hand, seems like not many. They do a remarkable job of finding talent, then retaining it.

Watching Bishop play LB for the 9ers. Didn't know he signed for them.

Favre got hooked on on a pain killer not dope, state the facts before you go off half cocked on a subject.

I don't recall him every going public with lack of talent around him, I believe he re did his contract to get more cap room for the Packers.

The media is the one that pushed the contract talk not Favre. The real issue was that he needed to tell them I will retire when I retire. He and the media played the game with each other. If the media leaves it out then there was no discussion of it. In a couple years I hope Rodgers handles it better than Brett did.

Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgren, Reggie White , and Brett Favre are the Packers Mount Rushmore post Lombardi. That group changed how the Packers were viewed by the NFL and a nation.

Yeah...I don't get how any real Packer fans care to bash Favre. The dude is a straight up legend. His personal life really should not matter unless he did something totally crazy, like murder a bunch of elderly people for sport or kill puppies for his own amusement.. Now I realize in Wisconsin there are a high number of holier than thou types, but lets get real. Here are some points to refute any anti-Favre naysayers.

1. He was addicted to Vicodin. That happens to many people in our society nowadays and I am sure there are many pro football players who struggle with this, especially considering most players are just done after 4 or 5 years and do not have the spotlight on them any longer. Plus the whole reason he was taking the pills in the first place was to help us win. I guess in a perfect world we would just have some baby like Cutler who comes out of a game when the season is on the line, but whatever, we had Favre. To each his own.

2. Sure he was a womanizer. I personally saw him making out with a chick out on water st after a golf tournament in the early 90s. So what? That is between him and his wife and if you are going to go all moral on him, he can answer to God, I guess. I am not sure what that has to do with him on the field, I am also sure he is not the only dude who has cheated on his wife, just like there are also countless dirty slags (we all know at least ten, some whom we have been personally married to) around who will bang anything that piques their interest. Why anyone would lose any sleep over this, I can only imagine.

3. The dude was a competitor and one of the only reasons he was such a waffler on whether or not he was coming back every year was a. he had an abnormally long career, and b. he took more collective punishment than any player in NFL history (hyperbole, but whatever). Sure, he was sort of screwing the Packers with his flip flopping, but TT called his bluff and that was that. We came out of it all right I think.

4. Going to the Vikings was awesome theater. Back in those days, any true Packer fan hated the Vikings more than any other team. I still hate the Vikings, even though they suck balls. Despite that, it was cool seeing him deliberately try to stick it to us, like any true competitor would. It also turned out completely awesome. He kicked our butt twice the first year, reinvigorating the rivalry for years to come. Then, in true Favre fashion he sh#t the bed in the conference champion game, which carried over into the next year when we kicked their cracks into the gutter two times and put their entire franchise into a ten year death spiral! We should be on our knees offering free handjobs for that, not cursing him!! We are in the year 2015, and people are just now predicting that the Vikings are back! Any keen football observer knows better though...they are still screwed and will probably be worse tha the Bears. I call it the Packer curse. The inexplicable tendency of the mouth breathing Minnesotans to pick up our players once we are done with them, perpetuating their 25 year cycle of poop. Coming soon; Clay Matthews starting at mlb for the 2018 Vikes! Again, thank you Brett for all of your hard work.

5. Even if you still inexplicably disagree with my rational thinking, it is clear that the great moments of his career outweigh any of the b.s some troglodytes are preoccupied with. The Superbowl championship, the 2nd Superbowl year, the 3 mvps, the hundreds of tds, the ironman streak...I mean...wtf...this dude was Dan Marino, Cal Ripken, Mike Tyson, and Duck Dynasty rolled into one human being!!!!

Anyone who is still against him after all this time, even if you hate the Packers, is totally dumb.

I honestly don't give a flying f*** about Favre. Can we talk about the 2015 Packers? THANKS.
Unlike the rest of our crappy division, we are looking pretty spectacular. Barring crazy amounts of injuries, I think this is a super bowl year. Probably a rematch with the Steelers. What a game that will be!!!

I love the way we reloaded the defensive backfield the last two years...HaHa, plus apparently Randle looks good and Rollins was looking like a stud on Thurs.

Don't chortle. We're not too far removed from a year when we had 6-8 key players on IR. It could happen again. Last year was a VERY good year for avoiding injuries. It's unlikely that kind of luck will continue.

And the AFC representative is going to be the Colts. That defense is going to make a big step back with Mathis returning.

The NFL execs must be having wet dreams over the most likely SB50 matchup of Luck vs Rodgers.

Still can't believe the lack of heart this team showed. I worry they missed their window. For how great a team they've been, their post season play has been a disappointment.

Wow, I just want to see the season start before we start crowning ourselves NFC Champions. Our DB's still will need to step up, I remember a lot of Pack fans last year saying Shields was a bad signing and he was over paid, and now he will be our #1 corner. Hayward seemed like a star in the making as a rookie but has been injured or average since then. Randall, Rollins and Goodson all unknown at this point. I love Haha and think he will just keep getting better but Burnett has always been a liability in coverage. I would love to see Haha and Hyde as our safeties, I would much rather have two guys that could cover back there.

I personally just hate seeing talk about how great we are going to be, before game 1. I do get the hype, we look good on paper, we have the best QB in the game, probably the best starting group of wr'ers and depth, couple very good rb's, if the o line can stay healthy it looks really good. As usual though, defense is the question mark, will we get consistent pressure on opposing QB' s if not we will be in a lot of high scoring games and always have the potential to lose those. I was against the Peppers signing because I hate lazy players, but he was actually good last year. I thought Ryan looked good against NE and maybe he and Clay will make a dynamic duo in the middle, hopefully Clay can stay healthy all year, that is a must. I still see potential problems I just hope the offense can cover up any defensive issues we may have.

I don't think the window is even close to shutting. Talent on both sides of the ball with a lot of weapons to make things happen.

"Mike Sherman with a Super Bowl" has a chance to get a second Super Bowl if he can start holding players and coaches accountable for their work or non work. He did a great job this off-season in giving up play calling and finally getting rid of Slocum. Now when something goes wrong he can go over and straighten things out since he isn't calling plays.

Ridiculous statement.

McCarthy - 94-49-1 (.654) with 7-6 postseason and a Super Bowl

Sherman - 59-43 (.578) with 2-4 postseason

Both had Hall of Fame QBs for their entire tenure so that's a moot point. The two coaches are not remotely comparable.

McCarthy is a phenomenal coach and the Packers are lucky to have him.

ALSO, for the question about their window shutting, NOPE. Look at their salary cap - it's one of the healthiest in the league. The Packers window is wide open for another 5 years minimum, whether or not they they keep hitting on mid-round draft picks (and with Ted Thompson, there's a good chance that will happen, and they will remain an elite team).

The teams whose windows are closing are those with aging QBs and a craptastic salary cap (Cowboys, Denver, New Orleans). Those three teams will be afterthoughts in a couple years, while Rodgers will still be in his prime. I don't think the Patriots window is closing because they didn't mortgage their cap; Belichek will keep that team in playoff contention even after Brady is gone.

Like I said MIKE SHERMAN WITH A SUPER BOWL!!!! Both these coaches have feasted off a weak division and come playoff time lost games that they should have won. Take out the Super Bowl season, Mike McCarthy coming into last year he was 2-5 in the playoffs. Like I said till he shows he can be better MIKE SHERMAN WITH A SUPER BOWL.

You have to admit now, that's quite a big takeaway.

Maybe they didn't miss their window. But dammit, they we all the way through the window and tripped dragging their back leg through, fell down the side of the house, rolled off the garage and landed in a rose bush with a rabid porcupine in it. Kate Upton was waiting down the street in a bathing suit. She took one look and walked away.

Agreed. That's like saying Aaron Rodgers is Tony Romo with a Super Bowl.

In my opinion we should have had a SB victory last year but McCarthy's play calling inside the 10 was so atrocious in that Seattle game. Rodgers has done everything but say he hates McCarthy's play calling and someone has to be blamed for keeping Capers on way past his experiation date. I don't think McCarthy sucks as a coach, but he can't carry Belichicks jock strap as a coach either.

Sherman was definitely worse, but they both got that look occasionally like, "what is this a professional football game going on here", bad clock management, questionable play calling. When you have a QB like Rodgers, a lot of bad coaching gets covered up.

I agree essentially. I think McCarthy should have publicly shouldered the blame. By relinquishing playcalling duties, I think that shows some culpability. But yeah, he #### the bed in that game. He even knew it too after the game when he put on his brave face and said something about "I'm not going to second guess my playcalling" or whatever.

That's the other problem I have with McCarthy, there is just a general lack of accountability. He never takes blame for anything.

Sabertooth you nailed it accountability but with him, coaches and players.

Perfect example is were was a coach or Mike when I believe it was Daniels had a real bad penalty in that game. Someone needed to get in his face and make him realize how bad a play it was. There is no coach that lacks fire on the sideline since Greene left. Need someone to keep fires burning and players in check.

It took him way too long to make Slocum accountable for poor special team play after years of that part of the team being poor. On that point I think the whole Packer front office handled getting a new coach poorly. It was bad timing on McCarthy's brothers passing but Ted or someone should have been on the phone with the good coaches that had just left other NFL teams. But Packers sit on their hands and end up with Zook. I am not high on Zook being an improvement.

Hoping Clements comes up with more plays inside the 5 yard line. We usually see 5 wide, Kuhn up the middle and then a 5 wide. Little play action and roll out will make teams think a little more.

Not really. Pretty poor example actually. Every player has a different personality and reacts to criticism or praise differently. The really good coaches know how to reach each individual player - some need to be yelled at, some need to be left alone, some need praising - the good coaches know to treat each individual rather some blanket way of treating every player the same no matter the circumstance or personality.

Not to be the board police but please stop #####ing about last year. This is the 2015 thread. The Packers are one of the favorites going into the season and it's time to get excited not lamenting on what could have been. Personally I cannot wait for the season to start. Go Pack Go!!!

Agreed.

Great seeing Rodgers back with his mobility.

Thoughts on the new Titletown district? I know this has zero FF value. But looks cool and shows how a team like the Packers will keep raising money in ways that they don't have to share with the league to stay in line with revenues around the league.

Great vision in the past by Harlan and now by Murphy in handling such things.

Adams was primed for a bigger role anyway.

The question is WR 3-5. A bunch of unkowns.

Only heard good things about Montgomery but at the end of the day he is still a rookie.

Shots fired:

Jermichael Finley ‏@JermichaelF88With Nelson out. Let's see how good @AaronRodgers12 really is. #Packers
Is that a serious tweet? LOL. No way he's that dumb.

Brady won his first two Super Bowls with no-name receivers. It's the QB that makes everything work. The Packers will be just fine.

Bump Adams about 6 rounds and Montgomery to a must-own flier. Might be some additional goal-line looks for Richard Rodgers.
