2016 Green Bay Packers thread (1 Viewer)

In my opinion we should have had a SB victory last year but McCarthy's play calling inside the 10 was so atrocious in that Seattle game. Rodgers has done everything but say he hates McCarthy's play calling and someone has to be blamed for keeping Capers on way past his experiation date. I don't think McCarthy sucks as a coach, but he can't carry Belichicks jock strap as a coach either.

Sherman was definitely worse, but they both got that look occasionally like, "what is this a professional football game going on here", bad clock management, questionable play calling. When you have a QB like Rodgers, a lot of bad coaching gets covered up.
Who the Hell can?

How are locals or Packer fans evaluating the 3-6 WR positions? After Cobb and Adams, who do you see having FF value as a WR3-4 at least in 2015?

White, Janis, Montgomery, Abbrederis?

Would Janis perhaps be worth drafting in redraft above the others? Thanks.

In order: Montgomery, Janis, White

Abbrederis will be IR'd, cut or on practice squad

I thought all the wrs looked really good last night. Unfortunately, I think Abby might be done.
Are Packer fans or locals actually taking a flyer on Montgomery or Janis late?

It seems to me to be a major opening for targets in the best passing game in the league.
I would take one of those guys as a late round flyer for sure. Like 15th or 16th round late. It also depends on how big your league is. In a ten teamer, I don't know...14 - 16 teams? I would make either one a target. One of them is going to get some solid burn as long as Rodgers stays upright.

I'd keep an eye on either Boykin on Carolina or James Jones on the Giants. If either gets cut I can see the Packers bringing them in. Would think they have more value as the 3rd WR than one of the young guys.

Agreed...Janis with a lot of upside as I have heard he is more of a fit for the Jordy role than anyone else. Just so inconsistent right now.

Right now, I like Montgomery. There were so many comparisons to Cobb...and if Cobb is out a bit...or sliding outside more to try and cover up not having Nelson, I could see him being a nice play at times.

As for last night...what a mess.

Why even have Cobb out there? Plus Bulaga and Matthews.

Even with that...the #1 D was torched yes...coverage was bad and that is the big concern. Im not as concerned as some. Seemed they went very vanilla, were put into bad field position by Hundley's early struggles and poor special teams. And if you play vanilla against Kelly, they will kill you.

Special teams is a huge concern. Was bad last year, and looked awful last night. And it won't get any better with all of the injuries piling up. You end up with guys who may not normally make the team being out there as special teamers.

I have no confidence in a return guy right now with both Montgomery and Janis not fielding the ball well. Can't risk Cobb...and Hyde is dinged now too.

#1 priority...get the Oline and Cobb healthy.

Exhibition Game 4

Pros:

- Brett Hundley looks like a hit as a 5th round QB selection. We'll see how much progress he makes over the next 12 months but if he shows anything more he'll be the back-up at this time next year

- The wideouts took a hit losing Jordy Nelson but if everyone stays healthy I like the depth behind Cobb & Adams.

- Jayrone Elliott seems to be more than just a one-year curiosity. Not sure he's anything but roster depth yet but he's earned a chance to get a few more snaps than last season.

- Really like Ripkowski on special teams, that kid is a hustler.

- Mason Crosby is booming his field goals and has been outstanding controlling the directional aspect on kickoffs. McCarthy even felt good enough to let him attempt a 66 yarder, he must be killin' it in practice too.

- Can't say I noticed the new offensive play caller effecting the pace of the offense in these exhibition games. Seemed to be a good flow with minimal problems. Considering how long McCarthy has controlled that aspect of the offense, that has to count for something.

Cons:

- Damarious Randall has a lot of talent but his technique needs some refinement. If he's forced into extensive action early, we may see him get picked on a bit.

- Abbrederris is a nice story but I'm not sure he's much more than a practice squad guy.

- After Lacy & Starks I'm not positive there is another NFL caliber RB currently on the roster. There's been a lot of hype around RB Rajion Neal but he's just a guy. If forced to keep a 3rd RB currently on the roster, I'd keep John Crockett around.

- A.J. Hawk is now a Bengal but his legacy of linebackers being unable to cover the backs or tight ends in the open field continues. Next year the Packers need to invest in a real inside linebacker. The starters have issues and the back-ups are bottom of the barrel NFL players.

- Through 4 exhibition games the special teams looked every bit as crappy as they did last season. Doesn't seem like Ron Zook has had an impact.

Janis is still raw and apparently not as dedicated to learning the playbook as the Packers would like, but he will have an impact this year. I wouldn't be surprised at all if his receptions are limited to 35-40 but he scores 6-7 tds as part of several red zone packages. If you project Cobb to remain at around 90 receptions. Adams to get around 70, Montgomery with 35 and Janis with 35 that equates to roughly the same total as last year with Nelson in the lineup and Lacy and the tight end position (assume Rodgers takes #1 spot from Quarless) matching their totals.

Quarless was just on Jimmy Fallon. He said he won the starting job outright, so pick him in the 4th or 5th with confidence. He told a really funny story about that gun indecent too.

I don't agree with this at all. Rajon looked fantastic tonight and he could be the primary kick returner this year. Vic has been talking him up lately and the announcers said he could be the starter on a few other teams.

I disagree on Rajon Neal...I think they will keep him and he has talent.

And they will cut 2 decent backs behind him.

Abbrederris has talent (at least between the ears)...just the body not holding up hurts.

I would love his work ethic and mind put into Janis or White's body.

Janis looked good tonight and White did well with Hundley.

Wow...they did cut Neal...may be keeping Harris, and no word on Crockett yet.

Abbrederris cut...not shocking.

Bradford and Thornton cut...sucks wasting those draft picks from last year in what was otherwise a nice draft.

- Hundley pick was my favorite Packers selection in this draft.

- Was disappointed McCarthy decided to stay in house to replace Slocum with an equally inept Zook. Wanted them to make a play for Brad Seely or Bobby April.

Dom Capers is the only thing holding this team back. Too bad they didn't dump his ###.
Capers is okay, but his complex scheme best run by experienced players doesn't really mesh well with the Packers continuously having rookies and second year players getting a ton of snaps.

Agreed...and Bobby April would have been awesome. That guy shows more life during special teams plays than the Packers players have the last few years.

Wasn't Julius Pepper, the most experienced player on the team, the one who told Morgan Burnett to slide?
He is a Chicago Bear collaborator.

I read James Jones is on his way to GB.

Actually I see he's already in GB with his agent.

Anything to keep the current back up wr'ers off the field will be a good signing. Although I admit I never truly cared about losing Jones as he has dropped many a perfect pass, and that one in Philly in the playoffs was the worst. I hated him for a long time after that, just cause it almost cost us a playoff game.

Smart because of the trust with Rodgers.

Think back shoulder passes that they simply dont have without Jordy.

Not a world beater...but a red zone target that they need.

Ty Montgomery was the early camp superstar but has a fairly quiet preseason. Fair to say that the JJ signing makes Ty irrelevant for fantasy football this year?

I don't see it making him irrelevant. Jones will likely see some redzone targets but I think he'd do his best work out of the slot and I'm pretty sure that spot is filled. I think it was a good pickup but most likely a depth add. I could be completely wrong but I just dont see them relying on him as a huge contributor unless somebody ends up in the doghouse.

I don't see him fitting in the slot role at all. He rarely (ever?) played slot in GB when he was younger, and a slot role requires quickness more than pure speed. Jones doesn't have the same level of quickness he used to....and he wasn't that quick to start with.

Consensus in packer nation is Thornton was a turd. Odd that Belichick signed him after seeing him in preseason. I wonder if this is a guy that says all the right things but doesnt show up, or if he just got hosed due to the 2014 injury.

Bostick cut by the Vikings, signs with the cardinals.

Arrghhh... Why didn't he let jordy catch the onside kick?!?

Shots fired:

With Nelson out. Let's see how good @AaronRodgers12 really is. #Packers

EVERYONE!! I worded poorly, meant to say, you'll now see how good @AaronRodgers12 is. Prayers to @JordyRNelson. R E L A X
This makes more sense. Looks like his twitter was blowing up...lol
Surely Twitter is a sign the end of time is near . . .

Jones will play outside like he always has, I think Adams will remain #2 but I certainly think Jones makes the situation more murky after Cobb. If it had been Montgomery or Janis I think Adams would have been more clear cut, but since Rodgers has a history with Jones and they actually posted decent numbers together, Adams / Jones will be closer than Adams / Janis or Montgomery and that is with good reason.

I think this actually helps Montgomery as I think he will be used in a hybrid RB/WR role which is much more to his skill set. He is not a downfield wr'er he is an out of the backfield, swing pass, dump off and make a guy miss type guy and this takes pressure off him to be more than he is.

This actually makes a ton of sense....

Any thoughts how this might affect the TEs, namely Richard Rodgers (who I took a late round flyer on but there are a couple other interesting FAs). And, more importantly, will he give Jones back his number 89?

They may have similar traits they are looking for in interior DL as Jerel Worthy (garbage) cycled through both teams and they drafted the underperforming Raji/Brace duo between them.

Also, it's probably been a few months so let me repeat that I'll always be mad about Henry Anderson going one spot before GB's pick. Anderson is probably DROY.
