2016 Oakland Raiders thread (1 Viewer)

I hope I'm way off base here... But something is starting to bother me about Cooper and I can't quite put my finger on it. I don't want to call him lackadaisical, but it just seems like he's on cruise control out there. He should have had no problem dragging his feet on that sideline catch that was out of bounds. I realize it's preseason but it brings me back to last season (I think it was against SD). There was a similar sideline play where he went out of bounds after making a catch, he could have easily gained more yardage. Now I don't know if it's a "business decision " or if he just lacks that fire like Steve Smith or Hines Ward have for example. I hope I'm wrong, I want to be his biggest fan, but it seems like with his skill set he should be more on point. Anyone else feel this way?
He makes it look easy. Too easy almost. Dont sweat him man. This time next year in ff people will be saying hes a top 5 pick in ff

No love for Crowser? He seemed to be in on every defensive play in his area and had some good pressures on the QB. Impressive.
He had a Charlie Hustle thing going on, for sure.  He is tragically competing at the deepest position on the team (aside from maybe OG).

I found myself in the weird position of waiting for our offense to get off the field, because I wanted to watch the defense again.  I'm going to watch the game again, just the defensive series.

Weird, I know.  There's just so many new, young faces over there, you can't keep an eye on all of them at once.

Keep an eye on Bandon Jackson. Number 63 I think. He looks like Gene Upshaw playing D-Line. Curious of your thoughts. He was making some plays. Maybe practice squad potential?

Not necessarily commenting on Cowser or Jackson, but in general, man........this team has depth.

Also, I didn't mention it in earlier post, but TJ Carrie had a bad game.   I wonder if he could move towards the bubble.

Was anyone else a little underwhelmed with our #1 D vs the Card's 1's? Seems like they moved the ball pretty well and besides the Henney blitz I wasn't seeing a ton of pressure on Carson.

I agree. I blame Amerson though. If he would have made that tackle on Johnson who knows how that drive would have ended up.

I had the same feeling while watching the series unfold. At least they stiffened up in the red zone and kept the Cards out of the EZ. It looked like a poor play by Amerson that would have resulted in a 3 and out. Also, remember that the Cards have one of the best offenses in the league.

Yes, I had that in mind that this is one of the best O's in the league and honestly I need to watch those series again. I'm not getting down on the secondary either, I guess I'm just expecting the QB to ALWAYS be under pressure with our front 7. Really it's probably just me being too hyped on our guys that I want to see us dominate their O line. Just a couple of series in the preseason is nothing. Wait until the opposing team has to keep battling into the 3rd+ quarter with us.

flight has been purchased to the big easy!!!  can't wait!!  opening day, new orleans for 3 nights!!  should be a blast!!!

if anyone has any ticket connections, let me know!!

Cory James was an animal on Friday night. Heeney better not be out long or he may not have the same job when he returns.

Some things I took away from the 1st preseason game:

I still say Cooper could have caught that ball in bounds. I won't even harp on the pass he dropped. I hope the coaching staff let him have it this week.

I hope Donald Penn stays healthy because I didn't see anything out of McCants that gave me confidence. Okefore pretty much dominated him.

The score wasn't really indicative of how the game was played in my opinion. After the 2nd McGloin TD to Holmes the Cards pretty much controlled the game until it became the George Atkinson show. The 2s were getting beat up front. I didn't see much out of Calhoun. There were 2 long runs, one where he just wiffed and another he couldn't get off the block.

Seemed like tackling and penalties were an issue. To be expected in the 1st preseason game.

Special Teams just dominated the game in all phases. Kicking, punting, returns and coverage were all stellar in my opinion. Led by the play of Toomer and Holton. When is the last time we could say that about the Raiders ST?

Holton had a nice cut block on Atkinson's rush as well.  Have to think he's early leader for 5th WR spot.

Holmes looks to be solidly in 4th.

Heeney and Malcolm both had a hard time taking on blocks.

Seems like early drive penalties have continued.

Jihad is a starter, man. He and Joseph had a nice stop of Lacy on the goalline.

O-line didn't do anything impressive in first half.

Why are Taiwan and Olawale getting carries with the first string? Would have loved to have seen Washington get those looks.

Autry and Ward seem to be used like Jr., inside and out.

Smith looks like a nice FA pickup. This secondary looks completely different. Completely.

Some young dudes feeling the jitters. Holton and Mickens with STscrewups.

Sloppy and disjointed 1st half, but no injuries.

Hoping to see more of Cook, Cowser, James, and my man Dexter in the 2nd half.

What are you guys talking about?  The first unit gave up 8 yards per carry vs Arizona and only 4.1 yards per carry vs Green Bay.

PROGRESS!!!

Say wha? I'd say OAK was one of the better O-lines in the league.

But, yeah, at the moment Murray is the guy with Washington as the #2.

My guess is that he's saying they've LOOKED pretty mediocre so far in the pre-season, which I would agree with.

With all the hype around the money and investment in this o-line, I'd imagine most of us were hoping that they'd come out of the gate knocking people around. That's not the case so far, at least.

Yeah, I know "it's just pre-season...yadda yadda" but still. I expected them to get some kind of run game going even if just for one drive considering they played the 1st string the entire first half last week (to be fair, I'm not really sure that it was the entire 1st string o-line on the field for the first half as I didn't watch every player on the line that closely).

it takes time for an O-line to gel...they will get there soon enough

Latavius leaves yards out there, no doubt. His instincts are not that of a top NFL back, I don't think.  He's a slasher, and not particularly quick on his cuts.  In a zone scheme, with planned cutbacks, I can see him being a lot better, but it wouldn't surprise me if Washington carves out a bigger role.

I know Murray has had a good camp, and I think he'll have some big games, as I think our line is going to be very, very good.  But these guys get graded by the coaches, if he gets 125, but could have easily gotten 175, they are gonna know it.

The real question is if Washington is any good.

Good Lord he looks like crap

IRVINE – Former USC star and Raiders quarterback Todd Marinovich was arrested after he was found naked with marijuana in someone else’s backyard, police said Monday.

The 47-year-old was cited for trespassing, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana, Irvine police Commander Mike Hallinan said Monday. Police suspect that the substance was methamphetamine, he said, but what was discovered will undergo testing.

About 9 p.m. Friday, police received a complaint call.

“The caller stated that there was a naked person on Venta Spur Trail,” said Hallinan, referring to a paved bike and walking path that runs along a greenbelt between homes.

Hallinan said that Marinovich, an Irvine resident, was in a backyard of a home on Bluecoat: “He was carrying the items in a brown bag.”

Marinovich, who rose to stardom while playing quarterback for Mater Dei and later Capistrano Valley High in the 1980s, went on to play for USC and the Los Angeles Raiders.

In 1989, Marinovich became the first freshman quarterback to start the first game of the season for USC since World War II after starting quarterback Pat O'Hara suffered a leg injury. He was a Heisman Trophy candidate in 1990 and led the Trojans to victory over Michigan in the Rose Bowl that season.

The Raiders selected Marinovich in the first round of the 1991 NFL draft, ahead of Brett Favre.

Marinovich was arrested for cocaine possession a month after the 1990 Sun Bowl. He was removed from the Raiders’ roster after only two seasons because of repeated drug use.

In 1997, he pleaded guilty to felony charges that he was cultivating marijuana in his Dana Point home and a misdemeanor charge of illegally possessing prescription medicine.

He joined the Los Angeles Avengers’ Arena Football team in 2000 but was arrested on suspicion of heroin possession and cut eight months later.

In 2005, Marinovich was arrested for drug possession in Newport Beach. Two years later, he was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, unauthorized possession of a hypodermic needle and resisting arrest.

In recent years, the married father of two told reporters he was doing better – devoting time to his alma maters and arts career.

On Father’s Day this year, Marinovich posted a video of himself filling up water balloons with two children, writing, “A total game changer! Happy Fathers Day all you dads!”

The real question is if Washington is any good.
The Oline has talent and potential but has not come together yet.  Obviously, the longer that takes, the longer the run game struggles.  Murray and Washington look to be capable RBs but have not had much room so far this offseason.

Latavius is fast but not a very good RB.  His lack of power is really surprising for a guy his size.  Washington should take 50% of the touches by midseason.

Murray is fast period. That's all. He's not dynamic, he gets very little yards after first contact and most importantly, he's prone to big hits and fumbles. Everyone is talking about Washington and Atkinson, but the guy who is showing the most on tape is Olawale. He's bigger (not taller) than Murray and runs angry. I wonder why the coaches don't  give him more carries. When he gets the ball he drags tacklers like tin cans behind a newlyweds' car. You can see a difference in power, Murray can be arm-tackled, Olawale cannot! I know I'm just and armchair QB fan, but I want to see this guy get 20 carries running between Hudson and Osemele and see what happens.

So when Latavius was averaging 4.8 yards per carry over the first 8 games (132 carries) last year he lacked vision, power and wasn't dynamic or gaining yards after contact?

It's weird how so many people give a pass to the rest of the offense, which cratered as a whole in weeks 9-17 but Latavius doesn't get any forgiveness.
